Today we are joined by Detective Sergeant Peter Lunney : lunney.peterj@police.qld.gov.au from Brisbane City Child Protection Investigation Unit at Queensland Police to talk about Project CASM which is the Community Against Substance Misuse. A couple of years ago, Brisbane City Child Protection Investigation Unit saw a problem in the local community of children/juveniles stealing cans of deodorant for sniffing. Retailers were being hit with up to 30+ cans of Deodorant stolen without staff realising what has occurred till the end of day's trade. It wasn't uncommon that some premises were targeted multiple times throughout a day. The offenders are inhaling the substance from the can. QLD Police found that this had the effect of: 1: Direct increase in crime (Stealing/other property offences). 2: Child Protection Issue of health and safety of a child Today we talk about Project CASM and discuss some of the learnings.
