In episode 30, we’re talking about upskilling - teaching employees new, sometimes advanced, skills in order to fill the skills gap. But why should companies invest in upskilling their employees? In addition to the obvious benefits of keeping up with innovation and staying ahead of your competition, upskilling existing employees is cheaper than hiring new people. It also boosts retention and engagement. Empowering your employees to choose what they want to learn and how they want to grow will help them feel more in charge of their career progression. Some new words we’re explaining in this episode include: team morale, to be savvy, to be ahead of the curve and well-rounded. In episode 29, we’re talking about agetech, an emerging and fast-growing niche in the startup world. Agetech focuses on technology and innovation that helps improve the lives of older adults. Older adults (over the age of 65) are the fastest growing demographic group in the world. And in mature economies, such as Europe and North America, these people also have disposable income. In 2015, in the European Union alone, the silver economy was estimated at 3.7 trillion euros. In episode 28, we’re talking about resilience. And in the context of startups, we’re going to be talking about resilience technology. Resilience is a word that can apply to people, to businesses, to systems, to the economy and even to the planet. If we want to recover faster when we’re faced with a setback, we obviously need to innovate and be one step ahead. This is where resilience tech comes to the rescue. Sometimes even literally. According to the Consumer Technology Association, resilient technologies are those that keep the world healthy, safe, powered, fed and secure, even in the face of adversity. Entrepreneurs in this niche want to tackle global challenges and threats such as climate change, forest fires, rapid population growth and urbanization, or coastal erosion. In this context, if you tackle a problem, that means you deal with it or you try to solve it. In episode 27, we’re talking about a new type of agriculture: urban farming. Do you know who grows the food that you eat? The truth is that for most of us the answer is no. The food supply chain is so long and so complex, that it’s almost impossible to trace where our food is coming from. Urban farming startups are stepping up to solve this challenge by using innovation to bring agriculture to cities and make it more sustainable, more productive and even more profitable. A few examples of this new type of agriculture include rooftop farming, vertical farming and container farming. Some new words we’re explaining in this episode include: to mitigate, to retrofit, and turnkey. In episode 26 of our Business English podcast, we dispel the myth of the young startup founder. According to a 2018 analysis conducted by MIT professors and published in the Harvard Business Review, the average age of entrepreneurs at the time they founded their companies was 42 in the United States. But do you think the age of the founder influences the success of the startup? Here is what the study found. The founders of the top 0.1% of startups, founded these companies when they were 45 years old, on average. The same is true in other countries with a growing startup culture. In Germany, for example, almost 20 percent of tech founders were over the age of 45 in 2016, according to a study by KPMG. A few new words we’re explaining in this episode include: whiz kid, to outpace, to plunge, an outlier. Welcome to the Smart Startup English podcast, episode 25. In this episode, we’re talking about startup co-living. This term refers to living with people who aren’t your family, or living in a larger community with a lot of shared resources. This trend is gaining a lot of popularity in the world of digital entrepreneurs, digital nomads and startup founders. If you rent in a co-living community, you’ll get your own living space - it could be a simple bedroom, a studio, or it might even be an apartment. That depends on your budget, of course, but also on the type of co-living community you’re joining. In this episode, we talk about the reasons why entrepreneurs choose to move to a co-living community, as well as the possible reasons why this might not be a good choice for others. A few new expressions we’re explaining in this episode include: a flat fee, amenities, price tag, upmarket. In episode 21, we’re talking about the French Tech Mission - a government-backed initiative to attract young businesses to France and encourage investment. Technically, it’s a department of the French government, but practically it’s operating right in the middle of one of the world’s biggest startup campuses in the heart of Paris: Station F. The initiative also has local offices in other French cities - right in the middle of the local startup communities. They call themselves a new type of civil servants that can help startups bridge the gap between policy and the practical aspects of starting a business in France.
