Her research and teaching focus on American politics, black ethnic politics, urban politics, quantitative methods, Congress, New York City and New York State politics, campaigns and elections, and public opinion. Prof. Greer's book Black Ethnics: Race, Immigration, and the Pursuit of the American Dream (Oxford University Press) investigates the increasingly ethnically diverse black populations in the US from Africa and the Caribbean. She finds that both ethnicity and a shared racial identity matter and also affect the policy choices and preferences for black groups. Professor Greer is currently writing her second manuscript and conducting research on the history of all African Americans who have run for the executive office in the U.S. Her research interests also include mayors and public policy in urban centers. She is the 2025 Author-in-Residence in Healthcare Fellow at the Roosevelt Institute. Hey Friends I am still fighting a rare but tough cold and so I was not able to produce a news segment today but I do have a GREAT conversation with a brilliant first time guest that I think you will love I hope you had a great weekend and I am happy we made to to May together All of Atima's Links Named to Ebony Magazine's "Power 100" list of emerging leaders and Jet Magazine's "40 Under 40" list, Atima Omara works and leads at the intersection of electoral politics and issue advocacy in the progressive movement. She is a political strategist, advocate, trainer, leader, and speaker with significant political, government, and non-profit experience, and she is a sought-after commentator and strategist. As the President & Chief Strategist of Omara Strategy Group, she provides strategic consulting to progressive candidates and organizations centering women and people of color in their mission and work. She strategizes with candidates and political organizations to win victories for a more reflective progressive democracy. An American-born child of Black immigrants, Atima realized early the importance of catalyzing social and electoral change from both the grassroots and leadership levels—especially among underrepresented communities. She has worked as Special Assistant to then-Virginia Governor Mark Warner, and then went to work as an organizer in multiple states with a union and community organizations on voter registration, ballot initiatives, and get-out-the-vote operations in low-income communities of color and immigrant communities. She is also a former candidate for public and political party office herself, and draws from her lived and professional experience to train activists to organize and candidates from historically marginalized communities to run for office for many organizations including: Emerge America, Higher Heights for America, Vote Run Lead, Running Start, New American Leaders, and National Council for Independent Living. Prior to that, Atima built her executive leadership experience from serving as Vice President of Reproductive Health Technologies Project, a research based advocacy organization; a Director on the political project #VOTEPROCHOICE (VPC) where she managed successful voter engagement campaigns on behalf of VPC for progressive state and local candidates; and as a nationally elected leader of the Young Democrats of America (YDA), the nation's largest partisan youth organization from 2013-15. She was the first Black president and only the fifth woman to lead the organization in its 80+ year history. During her tenure as YDA President, she grew national membership and led an independent expenditure to targeted states in 2014 that increased the youth vote turnout for Democrats in critical races. She is an original board member for Emerge Virginia and a founding board member of Virginia's List PAC, two organizations helping to elect more Democratic women. She previously served as Board Chair and Vice Chair of the Planned Parenthood Metro Washington Action Fund. The seasoned political leader is currently an elected member of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) since 2016 and elected vice chair of the DNC's Women's Caucus since 2017. Atima has published articles in American Prospect, The Root, Salon, Politico, Ms., Ebony, and The Lily (a Washington Post publication) among other notable publications and provided commentary to CNN, MSNBC/NBC, PBS, BBC, Fox News, Fox Business, NPR, Sirius XM, and other national TV & radio outlets. He is one of the nation's foremost experts on conversion therapy, helping to draft and pass legislation in states to protect LGBTQ youth and support survivors. He served as lead counsel in the landmark California marriage equality case, and he led NCLR's contributions to multiple Supreme Court cases, such as Pavan v. Smith, Obergefell v. Hodges, and Christian Legal Society v. Martinez. An appointee to President Obama's Commission on White House Fellowships, Shannon was one of the most senior transgender appointees in the Obama administration. He has taught law at UCLA, Stanford, Golden Gate University, and Santa Clara University. Shannon is currently counsel in six cases challenging the Trump administration's anti-transgender policies, including Talbott v. Trump, which seeks to restore the right of transgender Americans to serve openly in the armed forces. His work challenging anti-transgender military policies spans nearly a decade — he previously challenged the 2017 transgender military ban under the first Trump administration, and co-chaired the Planning Commission on Transgender Military Service, which produced a comprehensive study demonstrating that inclusive service policies are both administratively feasible and militarily beneficial. Shannon has been at the forefront of efforts to protect LGBTQ+ youth from conversion therapy. He founded NCLR's Born Perfect project, a national campaign to end conversion therapy through legislation, litigation, and public education. He has helped draft laws protecting LGBTQ youth from conversion therapy across the country and continues to advocate for legal remedies to hold practitioners accountable for the harm they cause, including through malpractice, consumer fraud claims, and professional licensing sanctions. Shannon was lead counsel for same-sex couples in the landmark California marriage equality case, which was the first state supreme court decision to hold that same-sex couples have a fundamental right to marry and that laws discriminating based on sexual orientation are subject to the highest level of constitutional scrutiny. He was also counsel for married same-sex couples from Tennessee in Obergefell v. He is one of the nation's foremost experts on conversion therapy, helping to draft and pass legislation in states to protect LGBTQ youth and support survivors. He served as lead counsel in the landmark California marriage equality case, and he led NCLR's contributions to multiple Supreme Court cases, such as Pavan v. Smith, Obergefell v. Hodges, and Christian Legal Society v. Martinez. An appointee to President Obama's Commission on White House Fellowships, Shannon was one of the most senior transgender appointees in the Obama administration. He has taught law at UCLA, Stanford, Golden Gate University, and Santa Clara University. Shannon is currently counsel in six cases challenging the Trump administration's anti-transgender policies, including Talbott v. Trump, which seeks to restore the right of transgender Americans to serve openly in the armed forces. His work challenging anti-transgender military policies spans nearly a decade — he previously challenged the 2017 transgender military ban under the first Trump administration, and co-chaired the Planning Commission on Transgender Military Service, which produced a comprehensive study demonstrating that inclusive service policies are both administratively feasible and militarily beneficial. Shannon has been at the forefront of efforts to protect LGBTQ+ youth from conversion therapy. He founded NCLR's Born Perfect project, a national campaign to end conversion therapy through legislation, litigation, and public education. He has helped draft laws protecting LGBTQ youth from conversion therapy across the country and continues to advocate for legal remedies to hold practitioners accountable for the harm they cause, including through malpractice, consumer fraud claims, and professional licensing sanctions. He is also a former Assistant Attorney General, White House Fellow and Florida Senator. In 2016, Aronberg created a Sober Homes Task Force that made more than 120 arrests for patient brokering and insurance fraud in the rehab industry, and has led to several new Florida laws and regulations that have become the model for other states. Aronberg's efforts also convinced Google to restrict advertisements and improve screening for addiction treatment. The crackdown in rogue sober homes and corrupted drug treatment centers contributed to a dramatic decrease in opioid-caused deaths in Palm Beach County. Dave Aronberg was born in Miami. He attended public schools before going on to graduate with honors from Harvard College and Harvard Law School. After graduation, he worked in the litigation department of a large South Florida law firm while also working closely with Insurance Commissioner Bill Nelson to investigate European insurance companies that refused to honor World War II-era policies sold to victims of the Holocaust. In 2000, Aronberg was selected to be one of 15 White House Fellows from across the country. In this nonpartisan position, he served in two presidential administrations as a Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Treasury Department for international money laundering, including the laundering of terrorist assets. Dave Aronberg was elected to the State Senate in 2002 as its youngest member and served until 2010. In 2010, Aronberg returned to the Florida Attorney General's Office as a Special Prosecutor for Prescription Drug Trafficking. In his role as the Attorney General's "Drug Czar," Aronberg led an anti-pill mill initiative that helped clean up the pain clinic industry and reduced the record number of people dying each day from oxycodone abuse. Aronberg is a trial skills instructor at Harvard Law School, and frequently appears on cable television as a legal commentator. He is the managing partner of Dave Aronberg Law, P.A., and a strategic partner with Capital City Consulting in West Palm Beach. He has spent the past 25 years speaking to audiences in all 50 states, on over 1000 college and high school campuses, at hundreds of professional and academic conferences, and to community groups across the nation. He has also lectured internationally in Canada and Bermuda, and has trained corporate, government, law enforcement and medical industry professionals on methods for dismantling racism in their institutions. Wise's antiracism work traces back to his days as a college activist in the 1980s, fighting for divestment from (and economic sanctions against) apartheid South Africa. After graduation, he threw himself into social justice efforts full-time, as a Youth Coordinator and Associate Director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Racism and Nazism: the largest of the many groups organized in the early 1990s to defeat the political candidacies of white supremacist and former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. From there, he became a community organizer in New Orleans' public housing, and a policy analyst for a children's advocacy group focused on combatting poverty and economic inequity. He has served as an adjunct professor at the Smith College School of Social Work, in Northampton, MA., and from 1999-2003 was an advisor to the Fisk University Race Relations Institute in Nashville, TN. Jonathan Miller is the Director of Markets for StreetMatrix, a real-time home price index series used by the financial services sector to track local, regional, and national housing markets in the United States. I'm also the President and CEO of Miller Samuel Inc., a real estate appraisal and consulting firm I co-founded in 1986. For 32 years, I authored a series of market reports for Douglas Elliman Real Estate, considered the "report of record," which accounted for 50% of their media coverage. My market reports analyzed the New York City metropolitan area, Boston, parts of Florida, California, Texas, Connecticut, and Colorado that were relied on by the media, financial institutions, and government agencies, including the Federal Reserve, Internal Revenue Service, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the NYC Office of Management and Budget, and others. I am an Adjunct Associate Professor of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation in the Master of Science in Real Estate Development (MSRED) Program at Columbia University, where I teach market analysis. I've guest lectured at institutions including New York University, Harvard University, The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, and Drexel University, and am also a New York State Real Estate Instructor for qualifying and continuing education courses and a New York State Real Estate Appraiser Instructor for qualifying certified general and continuing education courses. In the valuation world, I am a state-certified real estate appraiser in New York and Connecticut, and I provide expert witness testimony in various local, state, and federal courts. I hold the Counselors of Real Estate (CRE) designation. I am also an Appraiser "A" Member of the Real Estate Board of New York and a former two-term President of RAC, a premier appraisal organization whose members focus on complex residential properties for relocation, litigation support, testimony, and reviews. As a result of my extensive writing and investigative research on this Housing Notes platform, I brought public attention to the misconduct of two key institutions in the appraisal profession: The Appraisal Foundation and The Appraisal Institute. As a result, I became an expert witness for the Appraisal Subcommittee at FHFA in Washington, DC, which aired for three hours on C-SPAN in 2023. One memorable thing that came out of my appearance was the birth of my fourth grandchild during the session. On the personal side, I'm clearly a homebody and love hanging out with my wife, whom I met in college in 1980, greasing donut trays at 5:30 am at the student bakery, a part of the second-largest non-military cafeteria in the world, located at Michigan State University. There is nothing better than when any of our four sons and their significant others, including the grandchildren, are in town. For our fortieth wedding anniversary, my wife and I went to Antarctica (perhaps I'm not a homebody?) While I'm at it, a couple of formative childhood adventures: At 12 years old, I climbed to the snow line of Mt. Kilimanjaro (leadership said I was too young to summit - boo!) In middle school, I traveled to the Soviet Union on a study abroad program before the wall fell. When I was a teenager and before I got my driver's license, I rode my bicycle from Oregon to Virginia in the summer of 1976, carrying all my gear (my parents claim they gave me a one-way airplane ticket to fly across the US, and I came back!) At age 25, I co-founded Miller Samuel because I didn't know any better. In my offline hours, I love to read, explore new music, try to make snow, attempt to catch lobsters, and endeavor to connect to my backyard birdhouse camera from whatever airplane I happen to be flying on. Even when it wasn't part of my job, I've always broken news, breaking stories about the powerful and how the system is rigged against the powerless. Without trafficking in speculation or outrage-bait. Far too much of our journalism — from fringe to mainstream — is focused on feeding us info-bits that feel like they mean something (about what's going to happen, or who someone really is) but don't actually have any bearing on the material lives of everyday people. Until I was laid off in January 2024, I oversaw the original reporting of The Young Turks. Since then, I've been counting on reader support to continue breaking news here on Substack. (I also do an NSFW weekday-morning newsletter full of the kind of unabashed opinion-having that I make sure not to indulge in the reporting here on this Substack, because impartial journalism doesn't mean not having opinions it means being professional enough to ensure my reporting is intellectual honest.) That applies to everyone from muggers and presidents. I tend to reject simple and simplistic explanations for…why things are happening. People aren't perfectly logical, but anyone telling you that people are doing bad things because they're crazy or evil is selling you something you shouldn't be buying. A lot of big accounts out there rile everyone up and rack up likes by calling out people for being evil. My moral high ground isn't enough for me to make that my calling. So I focus on revealing destructive forces at work and crappy systems. And, yes, exposing the people responsible. It's my belief that elevation and illumination are how we get to a better place. He has written five books, including his most recent, The End of Greatness: Why America Can't Have (and Doesn't Want) Another Great President (Palgrave, 2014) and The Much Too Promised Land: America's Elusive Search for Arab-Israeli Peace (Bantam, 2008). He received his PhD in Middle East and U.S. diplomatic history from the University of Michigan in 1977. Between 1978 and 2003, Miller served at the State Department as an historian, analyst, negotiator, and advisor to Republican and Democratic secretaries of state, where he helped formulate U.S. policy on the Middle East and the Arab-Israel peace process, most recently as the senior advisor for Arab-Israeli negotiations. He also served as the deputy special Middle East coordinator for Arab-Israeli negotiations, senior member of the State Department's policy planning staff, in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research, and in the office of the historian. He has received the department's Distinguished, Superior, and Meritorious Honor Awards. Miller is a member of the  Council on Foreign Relations, and formerly served as resident scholar at the Georgetown Center for Strategic and International Studies. He has been a featured presenter at the World Economic Forum and leading U.S. universities. Between 2003 and 2006 he served as president of Seeds of Peace, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young leaders from regions of conflict with the leadership skills required to advance reconciliation and coexistence.
