Even when it wasn't part of my job, I've always broken news, breaking stories about the powerful and how the system is rigged against the powerless. Without trafficking in speculation or outrage-bait. Far too much of our journalism — from fringe to mainstream — is focused on feeding us info-bits that feel like they mean something (about what's going to happen, or who someone really is) but don't actually have any bearing on the material lives of everyday people. Until I was laid off in January 2024, I oversaw the original reporting of The Young Turks. Since then, I've been counting on reader support to continue breaking news here on Substack. (I also do an NSFW weekday-morning newsletter full of the kind of unabashed opinion-having that I make sure not to indulge in the reporting here on this Substack, because impartial journalism doesn't mean not having opinions it means being professional enough to ensure my reporting is intellectual honest.) I'm obviously extremely lucky to have worked with the people I have. My ethos for journalism is that "evil" is a poor explanation for human behavior. That applies to everyone from muggers and presidents. I tend to reject simple and simplistic explanations for…why things are happening. People aren't perfectly logical, but anyone telling you that people are doing bad things because they're crazy or evil is selling you something you shouldn't be buying. A lot of big accounts out there rile everyone up and rack up likes by calling out people for being evil. My moral high ground isn't enough for me to make that my calling. So I focus on revealing destructive forces at work and crappy systems. And, yes, exposing the people responsible. It's my belief that elevation and illumination are how we get to a better place. He has written five books, including his most recent, The End of Greatness: Why America Can't Have (and Doesn't Want) Another Great President (Palgrave, 2014) and The Much Too Promised Land: America's Elusive Search for Arab-Israeli Peace (Bantam, 2008). He received his PhD in Middle East and U.S. diplomatic history from the University of Michigan in 1977. Between 1978 and 2003, Miller served at the State Department as an historian, analyst, negotiator, and advisor to Republican and Democratic secretaries of state, where he helped formulate U.S. policy on the Middle East and the Arab-Israel peace process, most recently as the senior advisor for Arab-Israeli negotiations. He also served as the deputy special Middle East coordinator for Arab-Israeli negotiations, senior member of the State Department's policy planning staff, in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research, and in the office of the historian. He has received the department's Distinguished, Superior, and Meritorious Honor Awards. Miller is a member of the  Council on Foreign Relations, and formerly served as resident scholar at the Georgetown Center for Strategic and International Studies. He has been a featured presenter at the World Economic Forum and leading U.S. universities. Between 2003 and 2006 he served as president of Seeds of Peace, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young leaders from regions of conflict with the leadership skills required to advance reconciliation and coexistence. From 2006 to 2019, Miller was a public policy scholar; vice president for new initiatives, and director of the Middle East program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Miller is a global affairs analyst for CNN. His articles have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, Politico, Foreign Policy, USAToday, and CNN.com. He is a frequent commentator on NPR, BBC, and Sirius XM radio.   Bill Boyle is a well sourced and connected businessman who lives in Washington DC with his wife and son. Here, in Hopkins, my parents instilled in me and my sisters the value of hard work; washing dishes, and waiting tables. I joined a group of residents in the Hopkins Coalition as a way to be civically engaged with the people of this town and work to have their issues heard and their talents activated.   I want to see Hopkins continue to grow strong financially and demonstrate true small-town leadership. As Mayor of Hopkins and the Deputy Commissioner at the City of Minneapolis, I bring to the table 15 years of deep community engagement in our state's most diverse communities while leading teams that deliver nationally recognized programs. I bring solutions that are win-wins for communities, businesses and individuals and have the experience as Mayor to ensure that our City stays vibrant, balanced and strong.   I firmly believe we can continue to increase the growth and impact of this community while improving affordability, economic opportunity, and maintaining our path to becoming a national leader in climate change while still retaining our small town charm. He has spent the past 25 years speaking to audiences in all 50 states, on over 1000 college and high school campuses, at hundreds of professional and academic conferences, and to community groups across the nation. He has also lectured internationally in Canada and Bermuda, and has trained corporate, government, law enforcement and medical industry professionals on methods for dismantling racism in their institutions. Wise's antiracism work traces back to his days as a college activist in the 1980s, fighting for divestment from (and economic sanctions against) apartheid South Africa. After graduation, he threw himself into social justice efforts full-time, as a Youth Coordinator and Associate Director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Racism and Nazism: the largest of the many groups organized in the early 1990s to defeat the political candidacies of white supremacist and former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. From there, he became a community organizer in New Orleans' public housing, and a policy analyst for a children's advocacy group focused on combatting poverty and economic inequity. He has served as an adjunct professor at the Smith College School of Social Work, in Northampton, MA., and from 1999-2003 was an advisor to the Fisk University Race Relations Institute in Nashville, TN. Her research centers on the gendering of sport spaces, the eternally moving body, and social movements and sport. A native of Frederick, MD, Baeth has a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota with a concentration in Sport Sociology. While there, Baeth was a research assistant in the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport. Beyond her scholarly pursuits, Baeth is a perennial coach and advocate for cultural awareness in sport spaces. For years, we've watched Marjorie Taylor Greene on TV, prioritizing national drama over the people of Northwest Georgia. Around the time of his death she also felt a call to service, and while visiting a military base on a recruiting trip she was inspired to first serve her country in uniform in the United States Army. Alllison ended up earning an ROTC scholarship to college and joined active duty during the height of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars in 2004. She served two combat tours in Iraq, including a deployment during the surge, and achieved the rank of Captain. She served honorably and earned a Bronze Star Medal for service, and also earned an Army Commendation Medal with a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster before leaving active duty. She then continued her service on Capitol Hill, in the White House and in leadership roles in the nation's leading post-9/11 veterans advocacy organization. In her role as CEO of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, she drove conversations about the issues that the nation's newest generation of war veterans care about, including the need to modernize the VA, put an end to the veteran suicide crisis, and for Congress to reclaim it's War Powers' authority. Now, Allison is running for Congress so that everyday North Carolinians have a voice they can count on in Congress to represent them in Washington. She knows what it's like to live on the edge and is ready to fight to help make life a little bit easier for families like hers that continue to be squeezed by the cost of basic needs like healthcare and housing. Emanuel, MD, PhD, is the Vice Provost for Global Initiatives, the Co-Director of the Healthcare Transformation Institute, and the Diane v.S. Levy and Robert M. Levy University Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. Emanuel is an oncologist and world leader in health policy and bioethics. He is a Special Advisor to the Director General of the World Health Organization, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, and member of the Council on Foreign Relations.  He was the founding chair of the Department of Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health and held that position until August of 2011. In 2008, he published Healthcare, Guaranteed: A Simple, Secure Solution for America, which included his own recommendations for health care reform. Dr. Emanuel regularly contributes to the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, and often appears on BBC, NPR, CNN, MSNBC and other media outlets. He has received numerous awards including election to the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Association of American Physicians, and the Royal College of Medicine (UK). He has been named a Dan David Prize Laureate in Bioethics, and is a recipient of the AMA-Burroughs Wellcome Leadership Award, the Public Service Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation David E.
