David Skarica discusses his book "Mega Returns: Profit from Maximum Pessimism," highlighting key themes such as the end of asset price inflation driven by excessive debt and government spending. The conversation begins with an exploration of how COVID-19 and the 2008 financial crisis fueled a period of unprecedented debt, leading to inflated asset prices across sectors. Skarica emphasized the dangers of governments overspending during COVID, particularly in the U.S., where interest payments now surpass defense budgets. A concerning sign of fiscal strain. He warned that rising debt levels globally, especially in Japan and emerging markets like Canada and Australia, could trigger a debt crisis, potentially leading to hyperinflation. Investment strategies were a focal point, with Skarica advocating for precious metals such as gold, silver, platinum, and palladium as hedges against inflation. He also suggests specific ETFs for corporate bonds and options trading as actionable strategies. Additionally, he highlighs opportunities in emerging markets, particularly India's growth potential and Argentina as a turnaround play. Green energy and technology are discussed with cautious optimism. While skeptical of some trends, Skarica identifies opportunities in green energy companies and rare earth metals. He remains cautious about cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, noting their volatility but acknowledging their role as a hedge against dollar devaluation. Finally, Skarica underscores the importance of monitoring bond markets for signs of economic stress, particularly rising yields, which could indicate broader financial instability. His insights provide a comprehensive view of current market dynamics and actionable strategies for investors navigating a complex financial landscape. At the age of 16, he read the small booklet “The Plague of the Black Debt”, by James Dale Davidson, which was given to him by his uncle. David was always a sports stat nut, loving football, hockey and baseball stats, which lead to David becoming intrigued with economics and markets. David is such an avid Football and Las Vegas Raiders fan — his principal in grammar school was Bernie Custis, who was the late Raiders owner Al Davis' roommate at Syracuse University, and the first ever African American quarterback in college and pro football history — that he also runs his own football vlog, Raiders Greats, which discusses great Raiders player of the past. He also is a soccer fan who supports Leeds Utd., as his father was born in Leeds, England. In 1996, at the age of 18, David became the youngest person on record (that he knows of anyhow) to obtain the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) license to trade investment securities. In the late 1990s, David felt that the market was becoming another epic bubble similar to the bubble of the 1920s, so he decided at the tender age of 20 to write his first book, Stock Market Panic!, which was published in 1998. Over the next decade, gold soared from $250 an ounce to nearly $1900, while the S&P 500 lost value. In the same year that this book was published, he decided to start his newsletter, Addicted to Profits. The newsletter's name was a spin on Robert Palmer's famed song Addicted ...

“Football may be what I've done, Family and relationships is who I am.” Richard Seymour NFL Hall of Famer In this episode of The Pivot Podcast, Ryan Clark, Channing Crowder, and Fred Taylor sit down with Richard Seymour to explore his football journey from overcoming doubt as a young man to Super Bowl Champion to NFL Hall of Fame and now part of team Ownership with the Las Vegas Raiders. Known for his grit, humility, and leadership, Seymour opens up to the guys about the pivotal moments that shaped his life on and off the field, even the times he wanted to give up and what kept him going. Reflecting on the honor of being inducted into the Hall of Fame and why he chose his high school principal to introduce him, Richard shares his life-long gratitude for the people who poured into his journey, emphasizing the importance of relationships over personal accolades, something he's lived by his entire life. As a key piece of the New England Patriots dynasty, Seymour talks about “The Patriot Way” something that has come into question in recent times as the sports world debates who was truly responsible for the culture of success. Seymour weighs in on the partnership between Tom Brady and Bill Belichick as he praises Brady's competitive spirit and clutch performances while lauding Belichick's unparalleled preparation and coaching philosophy. Seymour shares insights on the dynamic and how the organization's culture of excellence influenced not just his career, but his life. Seymour talks about being traded to the Oakland Raiders, admitting it was initially a bitter pill to swallow but ultimately a transformative experience. He recounts how he carried the same relentless mentality to Oakland, proving doubters wrong and leaving a lasting impact on the franchise and now forging an unique opportunity to be more than just a man who played thee game. His transition from player to NFL minority owner was a dream realized through hard work and an unwavering belief in himself. Seymour discusses his role as a trailblazer for minority ownership in the league, crediting the late Al Davis and current Raiders owner Mark Davis for giving him the opportunity. He explains the challenges of being a minority owner and his intention to open doors for others to follow in his footsteps. Seymour talks about the process of transitioning out of the game, shedding the “gladiator” mentality that defined his playing days and gritty approach to life. He discusses how family, faith, and relationships have become the core of his identity, emphasizing that while football was what he did, it's not who he is. The conversation turns deeply personal as Seymour talks about the influence of his parents, particularly his father, who taught him discipline, work ethic, and resilience and how it shaped his understanding of manhood and courage. Seymour also shares a humorous yet inspiring story about his first football tryout, where fear almost stopped him from stepping out of the car—a moment that underscores how far he's come. Identifying his biggest pivots, from conquering fear to embracing new challenges, Seymour shares his mantra of, “Almost is not good enough,” which has fueled his success as a player, father, a man of faith and now an NFL owner. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.golongtd.comThe task, to most, appeared insurmountable. This was a Green Bay Packers franchise that had completely forgotten how to win. When Ron Wolf took over as general manager in November 1991, the football team in the NFL's smallest market was short on both talent and belief. With free agency looming, it was fair to wonder if the Packers would become obsolete. It had been 24 years since Vince Lombardi won his last title and — over those 24 years — these Packers made the playoffs only twice. (Many readers here certainly remember those dark ages.)Then, Wolf changed everything. All the Packers have known since his arrival is winning. He traded for Brett Favre, hired Mike Holmgren, signed Reggie White and restored the glory days. Through his decade as GM, the Packers never had a losing season, won three NFC Central titles and, of course, reached two Super Bowls. The Packers triumphed over New England in ‘96. So… how?How did Ron Wolf make the team in this frigid pocket of the country a winner built to last? The GMs that've followed — Ted Thompson and Brian Gutekunst — were both hired by Wolf as scouts in the 90s and both followed Wolf's blueprint. The Packers became a team that expects to compete for a championship every year. All a credit to Wolf, first and foremost. General managers across the NFL are trying to turn organizations around. We've spoken to many. Here on the third episode of “How the NFL Works,” Wolf explains in full how he did it. After so many years working as a personnel man for Al Davis and the Raiders (1963- ‘74, 1979- ‘89), a brief run as Tampa Bay's VP of football operations (‘76- ‘78) and the Jets' personnel director (‘90- ‘91), the timing was right. Wolf was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015. Today, his son Eliot is the GM of the New England Patriots.Audio and video are available here for Go Long paid subscribers. The written Q&A is also available: New readers/listeners can join us here.Topics discussed…* What compelled Ron Wolf to trade a first-round pick for Brett Favre? The Bucs years taught him a valuable lesson. He knew he needed a quarterback. * Was there a game, a practice, a moment Wolf knew Favre was exactly what the Packers needed? GMs across the NFL are waiting to be struck my cupid's arrow at the position themselves.* Favre should've been a New York Jet. Instead, he became a Packer and the trade launched the most unprecedented run of quarterback play the NFL's seen.* Green Bay had many disadvantages. To this day, it's hard to convince players in their mid-20s to live in Wisconsin. But Wolf didn't overthink the negative. He knew there were many built-in advantages to running a football team here… and he played off those advantages. He was determined to make Titletown a Destination Town. Right down to finding the best barbers he could, Wolf make this a player-friendly operation.* Hiring Mike Holmgren. (The 49ers OC was the “girl with the curl,” Wolf says.)* Signing for Reggie White. (Sometimes, it simply pays to pay the most money.)* All these years later, he still thinks about the Packers' Super Bowl XXXII loss to the Denver Broncos. Wolf reveals his great regret.* Why he believes Sterling Sharpe should join him in Canton.* Several personnel men under Wolf have spread his philosophy to other franchises. One, John Dorsey, helped build the best team in the NFL. Another, John Schneider, is still going strong in Seattle. Thompson, of course, won a Super Bowl in 2010. * Drafting Donald Driver. (The Chicago Bears are to thank.)* Trading for Ahman Green. (He knew the running back was in Seattle's doghouse.)* And the best feeling of them all? Winning the NFC Championship at Lambeau Field over the Carolina Panthers. Thank you for listening, watching and sharing. You'll enjoy this one.Go Long is powered by you.Video:

Yesterday's Sports is part of the Sports History Network - The Headquarters For Sports Yesteryear.EPISODE SUMMARYBefore we break down the Oakland Raider's 1967 season, let's take a quick look at their first seven seasons. Things didn't look promising in their first three seasons, as the team won only 9 of 42 games. Things changed quickly in 1963 when Al Davis took over as head coach and general manager. The Raiders finished the season with a 10–4 record, a huge improvement over their 1–13 record in 1962. Unfortunately for Oakland, they were in the same division as the 11–3 SD Chargers, who went on to win the AFL Championship. The team digressed in 1964, finishing with a 5–7–2 record, before bouncing back in 1965 & 1966 with identical 8–5–1 records. The Raiders made some good moves during the off-season, picking up quarterbacks Daryle Lamonica from the Buffalo Bills, and George Blanda (who was also a top-notch kicker) from the Houston Oilers. They also picked up cornerback Willie Brown from the Denver Broncos and assistant coach John Madden from San Diego State. Additionally, they used their first-round draft pick to get offensive guard Eugene Upshaw from Texas A&M..... Henry Lawrence grew up in the deep south... and in the late 60's, that was a tough place to be. When he wasn't playing football, he was in the fields with his family, picking whatever crop was coming in to put food on the table. His parents were hard-working folks doing back-breaking work. In Henry's junior year, his all black high school was going to integrate with the all-white high school. A tough time was made even tougher for the 17-year old football star... but he persevered and received a football scholarship to Florida A & M. And while at times he felt like quitting, he didn't, and 4 years later, Al Davis and John Madden had drafted young Henry in the first round of the 1974 NFL Draft. Both men had huge impacts on Henry's life, Madden in particular. They bonded from the day they met and had a deep affection for each other that lasted until the day Henry sang at his coach's funeral. Henry played 13 years in the NFL... all with the Raiders. Once a Raider...Always a Raider. A 2-time Pro-Bowl tackle and 3-time Super Bowl Champion, Henry Lawrence embodies what it is to wear the Silver and Black. Pride and Poise. A Commitment to Excellence. Just Win Baby. The first thing Henry did after being drafted was to set up a scholarship fund for future Florida A & M players. Giving back is just something that the Lawrence family always did, even when they had nothing to give. Where did that sense of giving come from? What was his relationship like with Al Davis? How did Henry overcome racism in the 60's in the Deep South? What was the most memorable play of his career? Hint: It's one of the most famous plays in Super Bowl history. It's a great conversation with an all-time Raiders great... Henry Lawrence on the Past Our Prime podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Former NFL general manager and three-time Super Bowl winner Mike Lombardi joins Eric to share what he learned working with coaching legends Bill Walsh of the 49ers, Al Davis of the Raiders, and Bill Belichick of the Patriots, among others, during his three decades in football and how those core leadership lessons directly translate to managing health plans and hospital systems. He discusses building a winning team, handling high-pressure situations, adapting to change, decision-making under uncertainty, and cultivating a winning culture. Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova. This week I am very excited to bring back my first episode with an NFL coach, Michael Lombardi! Michael is an American Football Executive and Media Analyst with over 30 years of experience who enjoyed front-row access to football titans Bill Walsh, Al Davis, and Bill Belichick. He was an assistant to the coaching staff of the New England Patriots and is a former Analyst for the NFL network. He previously served as an NFL executive for the San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, Philidelphia Eagles, and Oakland Raiders. THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone who loves football and wants a masterclass in leadership and culture building. TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… culture is key. In an organization like football, the role of the Head Coach goes beyond making calls, training players, or winning games. It's the culture that the Head Coach develops that will ultimately determine how successful that team is. The same is true of business; it starts with your leadership and the culture set by that leadership. But, you can't sit around and wait for it to develop, you have to be deliberate about building your team's culture if you expect to be successful. You have to figure out and know who you are as a person, as a team, as a business, and develop a plan to establish that culture as a leader. It starts with self-evaluation and planning. Whether you are 18 or 80, being self-aware and knowledgeable in your craft will make you a leader worth following, because you can develop a culture worth being a part of. WHAT I LOVE MOST… Michael talks about the importance of self-evaluation in culture-building and working at the things that make you struggle, not merely following the “best light.” When you are good at self-evaluating, you are better prepared to grow and change with your industry and your craft. On today's episode I reflect back on the career of Hall of Famer Jim Otto. Otto passed away this week at the age of 86. 00 is one of the most iconic images in pro football history. Otto played 15 seasons and never missed a game. He was a pro both on and off the field. I think you could make a strong argument that Otto is still the greatest Center ever! When I think of the Raiders, I think Al Davis and Jim Otto! RIP Pops! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
