As part of our Black History Month Rewind at Ms. Studios, we're revisiting some of our favorite past episodes. First up, we're taking a look of voting rights and voter suppression, revisiting an episode recorded ahead of the 2020 presidential election. At the 1964 Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City, voting activist and civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer described the violent injustice she and others had endured while living under the South's Jim Crow rules and fighting for the right to vote: “I am sick and tired of being sick and tired!”Over 50 years later, ahead of the 2020 election, we see record early voting across the country. Even so, serious efforts aimed at voter suppression persist, including curbing access to mail-in voting and shutting down polling locations. So, what are the biggest threats to voting rights today? How is voter suppression showing up in the 2020 election? What can we do to ensure that our elections remain free and fair?Joining us to discuss these issues are some very special guests:Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of the National Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. Clarke leads one of the nation's most important national civil rights organizations in the pursuit of equal justice for all. She is the author of Barack Obama and African American Empowerment: The Rise of Black America's New Leadership.Judge Glenda Hatchett, who served as senior attorney at Delta Airlines before becoming the chief presiding judge of Fulton County Georgia Juvenile Court in Atlanta. Her law firm, the Hatchett Firm, represented Philando Castille's estate in the wake of his tragic death. She presides over the two-time Emmy-nominated courtroom series, Judge Hatchett, now in its 16th season. Most recently, she has returned to TV in her new television court series, The Verdict with Judge Hatchett.Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson, executive director of the Highlander Research and Education Center—and the first Black woman to hold that title. She is an active participant on the governance council of the Southern Movement Assembly, and an organizer with Concerned Citizens for Justice. She has served on the National Council of the Student Environmental Action Coalition.Check out this episode's landing page at MsMagazine.com for a full transcript, links to articles referenced in this episode, further reading and ways to take action.Support the show

When Robert Taylor bought land and began to build a home in St. John Parish in Louisiana, he envisioned a compound that would house his family for generations to come. Now, Taylor hopes that his grandchildren don't have to live in this “Sacrifice Zone.” The Taylors' home is situated in what's known as Cancer Alley, an 85-mile stretch of land along the banks of the Mississippi River that was once home to sugar plantations, but now houses some 200 fossil fuel and petrochemical operations. Through this ‘porch chat' conversation with Robert and his daughter, Tish, we learn not only about the rare cancers, respiratory ailments, and miscarriages that afflicted their family and friends, but also how the duo is fighting back to stop these pollutants from ruining their environment. Robert Taylor: Founder of Concerned Citizens of St. John Parish and long-time resident of St. John Parish, located in Cancer Alley Tish Taylor: Member of Concerned Citizens of St. John Parish and daughter of Robert Taylor.

The Stark Beauty of Last Things (She Writes Press, 2023) is set in Montauk, the far reaches of the famed Hamptons, an area under looming threat from a warming climate and overdevelopment. Now outsider Clancy, a thirty-six-year-old claims adjuster scarred by his orphan childhood, has inherited an unexpected legacy: the power to decide the fate of Montauk's last parcel of undeveloped land. Everyone in town has a stake in the outcome, among them Julienne, an environmentalist and painter fighting to save the landscape that inspires her art; Theresa, a bartender whose trailer park home is jeopardized by coastal erosion; and Molly and Billy, who are struggling to hold onto their property against pressure to sell. When a forest fire breaks out, Clancy comes under suspicion for arson, complicating his efforts to navigate competing agendas for the best uses of the land and to find the healing and home he has always longed for. Told from multiple points of view, The Stark Beauty of Last Things explores our connection to nature—and what we stand to lose when that connection is severed. Céline Keating is an award-winning writer and author of two novels: Layla (2011), a Huffington Post featured title, and Play for Me (2015), a finalist in the International Book Awards, the Indie Excellence Awards, and the USA Book Awards. Her short fiction and articles have been published in many literary journals and magazines. Concerned Citizens of Henry County is group of residents who have come together to oppose a possible CO2 Pipeline that is planned by Wolf Carbon Solutions to go through Henry County. Concerned Citizens of Henry County want to know more about the potential safety hazards of a CO2 Pipeline. There are also concerns about the potential use of Eminent Domain laws which could be used to seize needed property to push the pipeline through over the objections of Henry County residents. Wolf Carbon Solutions has been working quickly to get the pipeline idea up and running and its forced residents to play catch up to make sure that they understand the potential risks of this pipeline and how the pipeline doesn't appear to hold much benefit to the areas that would be effected by potential disasters or property seizures, damage to property, and potentially a problem for home values within a one mile radius of wherever the pipeline is located. Monte Bottens, Diana Johnson, and Leslea Carroll joined Wake Up Tri-Counties on Monday morning to share their concerns as members of Concerned Citizens of Henry County.
Earlier this year, we told the story of how a change in the White House had the potential to turn the tide for Black communities fighting against more environmental pollution in one of the country's largest hotspots for toxic air — Louisiana's industrial corridor nicknamed Cancer Alley. The Environmental Protection Agency's new leader pledged to use all the tools in his toolbox to deliver "environmental justice," and his agency launched a groundbreaking investigation into alleged civil rights violations by the state. Environmental advocates thought it could be the moment everyone waited for after years of debate over discrimination. Then, out of the blue, the EPA dropped its high-profile investigation without any resolution. It blindsided everyone.Today on Louisiana Considered, we bring you the latest episode of Sea Change, where we go back to Louisiana's industrial corridor to try to find some answers. Why when the EPA was on the cusp of reforming the petrochemical state of Louisiana did it just... back off? Turns out, the implications are even bigger than we imagined. Far bigger than Louisiana. To listen to the full episode of Sea Change, click here. On this episode of Mormonish, we sit down with our two new friends from a concerned citizen's group in Heber, UT, to find out more about their goal, to have the new LDS temple relocated to a more appropriate site. As you watch the episode, you certainly won't miss the parallels to the situation with the Cody, WY Temple. As background info, a new temple for Heber Valley, UT was announced at General Conference in October 2021. The site was revealed on September 19th, 2022 and a ground breaking ceremony with President Russell M. Nelson was held on October 8th, just a few weeks later. The temple will be 88,000 square feet with an elevation of 5,712.72 feet, by far the largest building anywhere in the area. Three times taller than the existing tabernacle in Heber, for comparison. While many of us were lamenting the effect a large temple would have on the dark skies in this untouched area, most assumed that after the groundbreaking the temple had begun construction. This is not the case and a very active and organized group of citizens in the Heber Valley area are working hard to find a better solution and have the temple relocated to a more suitable area. As Mormonish learned from a site visit with the citizen's group, there are big concerns about the present site including dark skies, water table issues, height issues, location in the flight path to a local airport, and more. We learned a lot from our visit to the Heber Valley proposed temple site and we know you will too. If you'd like to learn more or help financially, here is their contact info. Goats don't actually eat tin cans, as cartoons would have you believe, but they do have voracious appetites and eat plants that other ruminants leave alone — making goats excellent at controlling unwanted plants. East Hampton Town and the Concerned Citizens of Montauk are planning to use goats in their effort to restore the coastal shrublands along the southern edge of Old Montauk Highway just west of downtown Montauk, and in Southampton Town, the highway department is already employing goats to remove overgrowth and invasive plants on medians and road ends. Southampton Town Highway Superintendent Charlie McArdle and reporter Michael Wright join the editors on the podcast this week to discuss the many benefits of using goats for ecological management.
This podcast and my mission are about changing culture. The Color of Law compiled our culture's practices that I can only see as cruel and unfair. As long as they're hidden, we can't do much about them. Listen to my episode with Richard and read that book if you aren't on top of America's history of cruel and unfair housing policy.Once you're outraged, then what? In this episode, Leah answers that question. She shares at a high level what people can do in their communities. You'll hear a couple extra notes of interest from me. One is to see what techniques in the culture she's changing can apply in changing our culture in sustainability. The other is that my episodes with my mom talking about the racially integrated neighborhood she and my father chose to raise us in, as well as the neighborhood itself, Mount Airy, Philadelphia, factored into her research. You'll also hear me recognizing a new element in how a cultural practice could start for one reason, say racism, then even after people in that system oppose racism, that system can continue and perpetuate the racism. At a certain level, I knew it already, but it hit me more viscerally when Leah explained it. You'll hear. The Just Action web pageJust Action on Substack Hosted on Acast. Louisiana is home to the country's largest hotspot for toxic air — an industrial corridor nicknamed “Cancer Alley.” More than 150 petrochemical plants line the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Amid the boom, many Black communities live with a disproportionate amount of pollution. But years of protest have begun to bear fruit. We travel the Mississippi River to learn what has allowed the industry to flourish on its banks, see how the tide might turn in one neighborhood's fight for clean air, and ask what's next for a growing environmental justice movement as federal regulators take firmer action. Charles Utley is Associate Director of BREDL. He was last on the podcast 2 years ago in Episode 45 called “What's Happening at Plant Vogtle?” so go back and listen to that one. Now, I check back in with Charles to get updates on what's been happening with his projects and BREDL for the past two years. We speak about the Shell Bluff for Concerned Citizens chapter, the zero waste plan for Augusta, GA, industries coming into the area, Plant Vogtle, and what he's looking forward to in the future. Charles mentioned a chemical company that is coming to Augusta and they called Aurubis and they are a world leader in recycling copper, precious metals and other non-ferrous metals, which sounds good, but they are known for contaminating waterways during this process and that is the last thing the city of Augusta needs in their community. https://www.dcpofficial.com/williamgreen On January 27th, 2020 William “Boo Boo” Green, was handcuffed with his hands behind his back in the front seat of a police car when he was shot seven times by Prince George's County police officer Michael Owen Jr. Boo Boo's Cousin Nikki and attorney Malcolm Ruff share updates on the case including how many times officer Owen has tried to make bail as well as the failures of the counties system that ignored internal red flags. CTA for citizens From Nikki Owens If you're looking for ways to be of service, Nikki Owens would like you to know that Police oversight in America is non-existent. Cities have tried to fight for laws that require police accountability with resistance from legislators, the Fraternal Order Of Police, and local politicians. The current judicial system in America is discriminatory and racist toward people of color. We the people need to recognize how problematic and dangerous it is for police to police themselves. Deadly force has now become normal instead of a last resort. Unarmed citizens, the mentally distressed, and children are dying at the hands of the people sworn to protect and serve them. We are seeing the centuries long abuse of people of color play out on our television screens daily, yet there is no oversight or consequences. Families are hurting and the call to stop murderous police officers is going unheard. We as families need to stand-up together, fight together, and demand that the laws that work for white citizens be enforced equally to people of color. We need the people paid by citizens to enforce and implement laws without bias, discrimination, and racism. Reach out to your local activist groups, ACLU, and other impacted families to join the fight for justice and equality Also, as always, push to have your state end Qualified Immunity Listen next week for a special part 3 on William Green. We sat down for a roundtable with Nikki Owens and Community Activists turned friends, Tamara McKinney, the cofounder of Concerned Citizens for Bail Reform, Beverly John of the Maryland Coalition for Justice and Police Accountability, and Dawn Dalton, the Cofounder of The JustUs Initiative, to learn more about policing and laws in Prince George's county, and how we can all better support families who have lost someone due to police violence. WARNING CHIME 34:32 skip ahead 1 min Malcolm at that moment, with William Green's hands cuffed behind his back, locked inside of a squad car, and essentially pretty out of his normal state, he shot at him seven times and he hit him in his torso six times and he killed him right there. He didn't kill him instantly. There's video after the incident shows that Boo-Boo was still breathing. 4.18.2022 #RolandMartinUnfiltered: LA's Cancer Alley, Manson's Takeover Remains, Nashville's Reverse Racism, The White Dress Project The Environmental Protection Agency has launched several civil rights investigations over air pollution in Louisiana's "Cancer Alley." That's between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, where a quarter of the nation's petrochemical production occurs. We'll talk to the president of the Concerned Citizens of St. John Parish, that says there permits granted in the highly polluted industrial corridor are discriminatory. The fight continues for Mason, Tennessee, as a judge denies to reinstate control of the majority-black town's finances to its leadership. For now, the state comptroller will continue to hold the purse strings. Also, in Tennessee, the state Senate gives final approval to a Black history bill requiring state public schools to integrate Black history and culture into the social studies curriculum for grades five through eight. All it needs is the governor's signature. A white Nashville councilwoman is kinda being called a racist for describing white people as white. Florida's State Board of Education rejects over 40-percent of textbook submissions saying they promote CRT. Former Superbowl Champion Marshawn Lynch is taking up hockey - as a minority owner. And in our Fit, Live Win segment, we're talking about fibroids. We'll meet one woman who turned her own medical story into an awareness mission called "The White Dress Project."
