This time PING features Emile Aben from the RIPE NCC R&D Department. Emile is a Senior Research Engineer, and for over a decade and a half has been looking at Internet Measurement at RIPE in the Atlas system, and in the RIPE RIS BGP data collection. Emile and a collaborator Romain Fontugne from IIJ Labs in Tokyo have been exploring a model of the influence and effect on global connectivity in BGP for different AS, based on the impact they have on other AS's transit choices. They call this “AS Hegemony” and Emile has been using it to adjust for sample bias in the data being collected in RIPE RIS and in the Atlas network. This approach to re-balancing the sources helps Emile to understand changes in network topology and routing under rapid shocks like cable cuts and he's been applying this to the recent spate of cable outages in the Baltic, around Africa, and the power outage on the Iberian Peninsula. Emile has also been looking at new ways of holding data, and visualising data. His RIPE colleague Ties de Kok has explored use of “Parquet” as a data abstraction tool and this has allowed Emile to perform rapid analysis and experiment in new data visualisations in 3D, rendered in-browser.

Wikipedia describes Subbuteo as a "tabletop football game in which players simulate association football by flicking miniature players with their fingers". Auckland-based artist Bob Moore transforms the miniature player models into well known pop culture figures. The launch of his exhibition Arty Little Flickers takes place in Grey Lynn tonight. Bob tells Emile what to expect. 

Pierre Thibault est architecte et l'a toujours été. Il ressent très intimement l'espace et souhaiterait que l'on construise collectivement des environnements bâtis plus intéressants, ce à quoi il a consacré sa pratique et son enseignement. On pourrait dire à ce titre que sa grande qualité comme personne consiste à nous tirer collectivement vers le haut. C'est un peu là qu'il nous attend, d'ailleurs : dans des rêves d'écoles inspirantes, de maisons consacrées à la contemplation — du paysage et de nos proches — et dans des quartiers en contact avec la nature. Des rêves qu'il s'emploie par ailleurs à concrétiser un à un dans les projets de sa firme Atelier Pierre Thibault. Dans cet entretien devant public réalisé aux Jardins de Métis, Pierre nous emporte dans son univers. Architecte, il est de plus conteur. On imagine en l'écoutant qu'il s'inscrit à la suite d'une longue tradition orale québécoise, avec ses montées dramatiques, ses creux de vagues murmurés et une gestuelle tout en bras dans les airs et en expressions faciales (ce qu'a confirmé la série de photos prises lors de l'évènement...). De quoi a-t-il parlé à Emile et Guillaume ? Un peu de tout finalement, mais beaucoup d'émerveillement pour le paysage, ce muscle atrophié à une époque de repli sur soi et sur les écrans.Il est aussi question du fleuve comme univers et milieu de vie, de granges, de l'amour du bois, de la maquette comme socle de la création architecturale, du mode de vie des moines à l'Abbaye Val Notre-Dame qu'il a conçu, de la médiocrité des environnements urbains construits à la va-vite et du problème de l'accélération dans la conception de tout. Dans un Québec qui multiplie les projets de condos avec vue sur stationnement, Pierre, dont le travail est reconnu à travers le monde, nous montre plutôt le chemin inverse, celui qui nous élève et nous tire vers le haut.

In 1993, French engineer Émile Leray's Citroën 2CV broke down in the middle of the Moroccan desert. Stranded without any way to call for help, he dismantled the vehicle and rebuilt it into a working motorcycle.
