Emile “The Cat” Francis was a Vice President and General Manager for the Blues during the franchise’s most turbulent period in the late 1970’s and early 80’s. This after a mostly minor-league playing career as a goaltender. Susie Mathieu, a Blues Hall of Famer, worked alongside him as PR and Communications Director during that time and tells some great stories about Mr. Francis. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982.

Because in the latest RNZ Reid research poll, more than half the people surveyed said they could be persuaded to vote for a different party. Which says a lot about the state of the parties currently ... but also got us thinking about what political parties need to do to target these so-called swing voters and how much energy would go into creating policies that could appeal to them. Clint Smith has held a variety of roles in Government, including in Jacinda Ardern's Government, And as Senior Policy Strategist for her predecessor, Andrew Little. He is now Director at Victor Consulting, and he joins Emile to discuss.

There is nothing all that new about using AI in healthcare .. indeed just this morning there was another article about how AI tools can mean doctors spend more time with patients and less time on administration. But what's not so positive is people choosing to use AI instead of a professional. It seems more and more of us are treating AI chat bots as 24/7 therapists .. using them to talk through problems or seek support when we're struggling. University of Auckland's Dushanthi Manamalage has been investigating this phenomenon and joins Emile.

An RNZ story caught our eye this morning discussing the number of vacant Kainga Ora houses in Wellington. An apparent stall in redevelopment is the reason for these properties staying empty. But it got us thinking about the wider issue of so called 'ghost housing' - houses which appear to be left empty for sometimes years. We want to know how much of a problem is it ... And is there a case for following the likes of Vancouver who have introduced an 'empty house' tax. Gareth Kiernan is Chief Forecaster and Director at Infometrics - he chats to Emile.

It was founded by New Zealander Wayne Mills, who noticed that while there were plenty of competitions for the sporty kids, there wasn't really anything to celebrate young people who loved books. A new study from the University of Otago has examined social media through the lens of exercise advice targeting women - and the result may just surprise you. Professor Katherine Black, from the Department of Human Nutrition co-authored the study - and she joins Emile to discuss.

A Night Mayor's job is to advocate for the community, businesses, artists, venues, and workers that keep a city alive after dark. Many of you were in support of such an idea .. although some of you concerned about more bills to pay for it .. so we thought we should find out how it could work in reality. And we didn't have to look very far to find an example .. if we take a look to Australia, New South Wales already has something very close to that. As you no doubt will have heard, yesterday we lost perhaps the finest actor New Zealand has ever produced, Sir Sam Neill, at the age of 78. For more than 20 years Ruben Miller worked alongside police as a forensic scientist and frontline crime scene investigator, attending homicides, suspicious deaths and major investigations throughout New Zealand. Earlier this year he released a memoir, 'The Blood Says Otherwise.' It's about forensic science and crime scenes, but it's also focusses on the trauma, empathy, and human behaviour behind it all. In his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde tells the story of a handsome young man who makes a deal with the Devil—his soul, in exchange for eternal youth and beauty. But there is a portrait of Dorian in the attic of his house, and as he moves through the years with his handsome face not aging, the portrait ages—and it also begins to show the poison seeping through him as he lives his life in soulless, selfish pursuit of hedonistic pleasures. He drives a young woman to suicide and doesn't feel bad about it. He becomes more and more of a toxic force in the lives of the people around him. And when his friend finally calls him out on it, Dorian murders him. He couldn't bear the fact that his best friend could see him for what he really was—the true, monstrous face behind the handsome façade. It's a hell of a metaphor, and it's what we've said so many times on our show about narcissists: that they want to indulge themselves at the expense of everybody else, but would rather die than be exposed for it. Today's story is about a real-life Dorian Gray, a man who used his charm and charisma to lure in a talented, intelligent woman, only to throw her life into chaos and leave broken wreckage behind.
