Rethinking Autism Therapy: How DIRFloortime® Meets Autistic Needs with Dr. Emile Gouws

How does DIRFloortime® meet autistic needs in a neurodiversity-affirming way?In this third episode of the Rethinking Autism Therapy mini-series, Daria Brown is joined by autistic self-advocate, researcher, and ICDL Board President Dr. Emile Gouws to explore how the DIR® model aligns with autistic lived experience and why relationships, respect, and understanding are essential for meaningful development.Drawing on his own experiences growing up as a nonspeaking autistic child, Emile shares the challenges of being viewed through a medical-model lens, the trauma of compliance-based interventions, and the profound impact of finally being seen, understood, and supported through a relationship-based approach. Together, Daria and Emile discuss how DIRFloortime® differs from approaches focused on normalization by emphasizing individual differences, emotional development, authentic communication, and connection. The conversation highlights how autistic development may look different from neurotypical development, why practitioners must be mindful of ableist assumptions, and how play, co-regulation, and meaningful relationships create the conditions for growth. They also explore the role of neurodiversity, self-advocacy, sensory differences, and the Double Empathy Problem in shaping a more affirming understanding of autism.Learn more:

Gorillaz is a virtual cartoon-band that began as an experiment for Blur frontman Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett in the early 2000s and quickly became a phenomenon. They've won BRIT and Grammy awards, they've got singles and music videos with streams in the billions, and to date they've put out nine albums, with three of those going to number one including their latest release just this year, 'The Mountain'. To talk all things Gorillaz, Emile is joined by Afternoons producer Sam Hollis.

The World Meteorological Organisation has found 2025 was the 2nd-warmest year on record for the South-West Pacific. The higher temperatures came with increased rainfall, marine heatwaves, and sea level rise - and below average amounts of snow on South Island mountains. In his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde tells the story of a handsome young man who makes a deal with the Devil—his soul, in exchange for eternal youth and beauty. But there is a portrait of Dorian in the attic of his house, and as he moves through the years with his handsome face not aging, the portrait ages—and it also begins to show the poison seeping through him as he lives his life in soulless, selfish pursuit of hedonistic pleasures. He drives a young woman to suicide and doesn't feel bad about it. He becomes more and more of a toxic force in the lives of the people around him. And when his friend finally calls him out on it, Dorian murders him. He couldn't bear the fact that his best friend could see him for what he really was—the true, monstrous face behind the handsome façade. It's a hell of a metaphor, and it's what we've said so many times on our show about narcissists: that they want to indulge themselves at the expense of everybody else, but would rather die than be exposed for it. Today's story is about a real-life Dorian Gray, a man who used his charm and charisma to lure in a talented, intelligent woman, only to throw her life into chaos and leave broken wreckage behind. On the surface, Victoria Cillier's life seemed to be picturesque. She had just given birth to her second child with her husband, Emile, and the couple had planned a skydiving excursion for Victoria. However, little did she know that her husband had been marred by debt and affairs, and that he could see only one way out. When Victoria's parachute malfunctioned, she plummeted 4,000 feet to the ground. Upon inspection, it quickly became clear that this was no freak accident; this was an attempted murder.
