Catherine, David and Matt catch up on the weekend's action in Canada with Toronto and Montreal both at the quarter-finals stage. Part one (00:00 - 15:07) Before we get to Canada, we start with the disappointing news that Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from Cincinnati due to a knee injury. How concerning is this? And what could it mean for the US Open? Part two (15:08 - 49:22) WTA Toronto. There's chat about Aryna Sabalenka's slump continuing, the challenge facing Ekaterina Alexandrova as she attempts to back up that win against Elina Svitolina, an unconvincing display from Elena Rybakina as she looks to close the gap to World No.1, a remarkable turnaround from Iga Swiatek to beat Marta Kostyuk, Alexandra Eala finally hitting the wall, and impressive performances from both Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka. Part three (49:23 - 1:26:11) ATP Montreal. A last eight made up entirely of players born in the 2000s, the most enticing match up sees Arthur Fils go up against Rafael Jodar. We discuss Fils lighting it up against Cameron Norrie, Jodar's destructive return of serve, and what might happen in that one. Plus, there's a review of Ben Shelton beating Joao Fonseca, Brandon Nakashima's quiet run of form since hiring Wayne Ferreira, and predictions. Every Coffee Fest we sit down with presenters and speakers to talk about their field of expertise and learn from their experience in coffee. This time we had a wonderful time talking with three professionals at Coffee Fest Chicago!  We start with Lan Ho, Founder of Fat Miilk Vietnamese coffee bar in Chicago! Lan Ho is the founder and CEO of Fat Miilk, a Chicago-based Vietnamese coffee company redefining the role of Robusta in modern coffee. Through a platform spanning direct sourcing, roasting, retail cafés, and consumer packaged goods, she is building a brand that connects origin to everyday ritual. With a background in pharmacy, Lan brings a systems-driven mindset to an industry often led by tradition. She left a six-figure healthcare career to pursue entrepreneurship and has since been featured on CNBC and appeared on Gordon Ramsay's Food Stars. Fat Miilk opened its first Chicago storefront in 2024, with a second location in Naperville set to open this summer. Deeply interested in consumer psychology, Lan approaches coffee through the lens of lifestyle, how people drink, feel, and connect through daily habits. She is a leading voice in advancing Robusta's place in the global coffee conversation.   Links: https://fatmiilk.com/ http://instagram.com/fatmiilk/   Next we are talking about approachable and joyful coffee training and eduction with Miranda Haney of Barista Friend!  Miranda Haney is a coffee educator and consultant based in Austin, TX. She is the founder of Barista Friend, a mobile barista training service for home and professional baristas.  Hailing from a long line of teachers, Miranda is especially passionate about delivering information in a way that's engaging and easy to understand. She's a permanent fixture at the local latte art competitions, a two-time U.S. Barista Championships national competitor, runner-up in the 2024 Barista League, Denver, and currently serves as vice president of the Austin Coffee Collective. Most recently, she was a 2025 Coffee Sustainability Fellow with The Chain Collaborative.   Links: https://www.instagram.com/baristafriend/ https://baristafriend.substack.com/   Finally we talk with Asia Vo of Loba Pastry and Coffee  Asia Vo is a Chicago-based artist devoted to curating intentional food and beverage experiences. Some people are just not able to handle being put in the Friend Zone. It's a pretty common thing. Two people meet by circumstance. Maybe they're college students who have a class together, or they could be co-workers in an office. They get to know each other, and they become really good friends. They end up spending a lot of time hanging out together outside of work or school. They develop a close relationship, maybe even confiding in each other and having some deep conversations. Then there's a problem that comes in. And I know this doesn't just happen in male-female relationships, and I don't have any statistics or studies to back this up; it's just anecdotal. But from what I've seen and read, one of the people, commonly the woman, sees the relationship as platonic. They're just wonderful friends, and there's no romance involved. But her male friend, thinks otherwise. He's developed feelings for this woman, and thinks she might have feelings for him too. Eventually he might express those feelings verbally, or maybe he waits for what he thinks is the right moment and tries to kiss her. That's when things fall apart. She explains to him that she sees him not as a romantic partner, but just as a close friend. She just put him in the Friend Zone. And different people handle this in different ways. He's gonna be disappointed of course, but what about beyond that? After he declared his feelings for her, can they still be friends? Sometimes they can. But not always. My guest today, Marina, has experienced this. She told this story on the podcast in one of the earliest episodes, back in 2019. She had a friend who actually scared her – because he took things way too far. Show notes for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/264 Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Catherine, David and Matt react to the first few days of action across Canada as the men's top seeds fall by the wayside. Part one (00:00 - 44:35) Unfortunately we start with an update on the abundance of injury news on the ATP Tour, including Carlos Alcaraz delaying his comeback and withdrawing from Cincinnati, as well as reports in Italy that Jannik Sinner is dealing with a knee issue. What do we make of all that? The tournament in Montreal hasn't been immune to injury woe either and we discuss the sad withdrawal of Felix Auger-Aliassime and the crushing scene of Jack Draper in tears on court. Moving on to the actual tennis, there's chat about Alexander Zverev losing to Tallon Griekspoor, a win for Boric van de Zandschulp over Daniil Medvedev, another opportunity missed by Alex de Minaur, a second straight win for Rafael Jodar over the returning Lorenzo Musetti, and our picks for the title from here. Part two (44:46 - 1:01:45) While the men's event in Montreal has been defined by big names going out, there hasn't been many upsets in Toronto, except for Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova losing to Caty McNally. We discuss that result, Aryna Sabalenka doing enough to keep her No.1 ranking, and more incredible scenes at Alexandra Eala's matches. There's also reaction to Amanda Anisimova's dramatic win over Nikola Bartunkova and a look ahead to some of the blockbuster matches which have been set up. Part three (1:01:46 - 1:16:32) We discuss the first comments from players about the new WTA genetic sex testing policy and take a look at what the WTA appointing IMG as its production partner for broadcast could mean. The Commonwealth kept building its picture of Lindsay Clancy this week, and the picture is getting more complicated, not less. Clancy, 34, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation over the January 24, 2023 deaths of her children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 7 months — allegedly strangled with exercise bands inside the family's Summer Street home. She's pleaded not guilty. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington is arguing severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication left her not criminally responsible.Kimberlee Hardy, former Child Service Director at the Kingsbury Club, told jurors Clancy was shy and reticent around other parents and staff, and wouldn't bring Callan in because she was nervous about him catching a cold — though on cross, Hardy said Clancy always seemed happy with her children. Sarah Carney, a family friend closer to Patrick Clancy than to Lindsay, testified Lindsay had been exercising frequently and looked noticeably thinner by the fall and winter of 2022, but described nothing more alarming than a quieter version of the woman she knew. The heavier testimony came from Dr. Alia Goodheart of McLean Hospital, who explained how patients get admitted — through the ER, via an involuntary Section 12 or voluntary Section 10. Clancy checked in voluntarily in January, citing insomnia and medication side effects. Goodheart's records documented suicidal ideation without a plan, no signs of psychosis, and a minimal-risk classification. Clancy reported feeling emotionally numb and pushed back on a possible bipolar diagnosis. Goodheart weighed postpartum depression, diagnosed insomnia linked to a mental health condition, and sent her home — judged no threat to herself or others.Three witnesses, three separate windows, and one question the jury still has to answer.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? What if the woman you've been striving so hard to become...is the woman God already says you are? Think about that for a second. So many women live with the belief, "I'll be more confident when I lose the weight." Or, "I'll finally start serving once I feel comfortable in my body." Maybe you've even told yourself, "When I reach my goal weight, then I'll believe I'm enough." But what if those thoughts have been keeping you stuck? The truth is, the enemy loves to convince us that our identity is always one achievement away. One smaller clothing size. One lower number on the scale. One more accomplishment. Because as long as we're chasing a future version of ourselves, we're distracted from living in the identity God has already given us. Friend, your worth was never something you had to earn. Your confidence doesn't come from your body—it comes from Christ. Your purpose isn't waiting for you at your goal weight. And your calling has never depended on fitting into your old jeans. Today, we're talking about what it really means to become the woman God created you to be—not someday, not after you lose 20 pounds, but right now. Because when you begin living from your God-given identity instead of striving to earn it, everything changes...including the way you approach your health. Before we dive in, I want to invite you to something special. On September 2nd, I'm hosting a FREE live workshop on Zoom where we'll talk about how to finally break free from the exhausting start-over cycle with food and weight loss. If you're tired of starting over every Monday, every month, or every season, this workshop is for you. Four witnesses took the stand today in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation. She has pleaded not guilty and is mounting an insanity defense, with attorney Kevin Reddington arguing she was in the grip of severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication at the time of the killings.Susan Bertolo, a former teacher at Learning Sprouts, testified that Cora needed the bathroom more often than usual and, at one point, was upset that her mother was in the hospital. Fellow Learning Sprouts teacher Stephanie Williams told the court she saw no signs of depression in her interactions with Clancy. Then came the more complicated testimony. Mass General labor and delivery nurse Andrea Hennigan — who has no formal PPD training but has screened patients for it — said she socialized with Clancy and that Clancy told her she was worried about returning to work because of insomnia. On cross, Hennigan acknowledged Clancy had numerous doctor's appointments and had been placed on multiple medications with side effects, while still describing her as a loving, attentive mother. Marriage and family therapist Bethany DeCollibus, a friend of Clancy's, testified Clancy seemed more tired after Callan was born and never appeared suicidal — but told her she felt like "a zombie."Prosecutors are expected to argue Clancy understood the nature of her actions despite the defense's mental-health claims. After the killings, Clancy allegedly attempted to take her own life by jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. Two witnesses who knew Lindsay Clancy from opposite sides of her life took the stand today in her murder trial — and together they complicated the story more than they simplified it. Clancy, 34, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, is accused of strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. She's pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation, with attorney Kevin Reddington mounting an insanity defense built on severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.Amy Bevins, a licensed behavior analyst for autistic children who's known Clancy for 29 years, testified that Dawson's delivery was difficult — but that right before the killings, Lindsay actually seemed hopeful. On cross, she admitted the two of them had texted repeatedly about how hard the prescribed medications were to tolerate, and that after the tragedy, on her mental health providers' advice, they simply stopped discussing the children at all. Then came Christopher W. Clancy, Patrick's father, describing a daughter-in-law who was fiercely protective of baby Callan, though he'd noticed real frustration when it came to Dawson. He confirmed what's becoming a running theme in this trial: trouble sleeping, an ER visit, real strain — but by his account, Lindsay mostly seemed to be in good spirits. Two witnesses, two vantage points, and a jury left to reconcile "hopeful" and "good spirits" with what happened days later.Prosecutors still argue Clancy understood exactly what she was doing. After the killings, she allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window and remains paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick, was running errands at the time and has since relocated to Manhattan. The trial continues in Plymouth Superior Court.LinksJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Lindsay Clancy, the 34-year-old Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023, was back in Plymouth Superior Court as jurors heard from two very different witnesses. Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation. She's pleaded not guilty, and attorney Kevin Reddington is mounting an insanity defense built on severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.First up: Kyle Carney, a friend of Patrick Clancy's, who testified that the day of the killings looked like nothing at all — normal, unremarkable, a good day. No warning signs. Then Massachusetts State Police Trooper Andrew Chiachio took the stand and the mood in the room changed. He detailed pulling surveillance footage from a nearby CVS and Three V Restaurant, and revealed that six months after the incident, investigators got a warrant to swab the outside of the Clancy home for possible DNA. A second warrant targeted Facebook, surfacing a May 2021 post from a parenting support group where Clancy described every day with Dawson as a battle. But on cross, Reddington got Chiachio to admit something that cuts the other way — no evidence Clancy was ever abusive toward her son turned up anywhere. The jury was dismissed after the two testified.Prosecutors are expected to argue Clancy understood what she was doing despite the defense's mental-health claims. After the killings, Clancy allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window and is now paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick, was out running errands at the time and has since relocated to Manhattan. The trial is expected to run several more weeks.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Have you ever replayed a conversation in your head for three days because someone might have been upset with you? Friend... same. This week on Laugh Lines, Penn and I sit down with psychiatrist and ADHD expert Dr. Sasha Hamdani to talk about something that completely changed the way we understand ourselves: Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD).If you've ever been called "too sensitive," taken criticism way too personally, or apologized a hundred times a day, this conversation might explain why. Dr. Hamdani shares the science behind why so many people with ADHD experience emotions so intensely, why hormonal changes like perimenopause can make it even harder, and what we can actually do about it.We also talk about the surprising upside of feeling things deeply, because the same brain that feels rejection so intensely also experiences joy, awe, empathy, and connection in a really beautiful way. (And somehow we end up talking about WikiFeet. Because of course we do.)Whether you have ADHD or you've simply spent your life feeling "too sensitive," this conversation is for you. We love to hear from you! Leave us a message at 323-364-3929 or write the show at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com. (Also send us your weird summer jobs!)
