“Who can you call at midnight when everything has gone wrong?” This question shook me when I first heard it years ago. How many of my friendships were strong enough that I could impose on them in my hour of need? I wasn’t sure. Scripture has much to say about friendship, describing a friend as someone who keeps confidences (Proverbs 16:28), shares advice (27:9), and respects boundaries (25:17). But perhaps no one defined friendship more powerfully than Jesus. While to advertisers we are markets and to employers we are staff, to him, the Master of all, we are “friends” (John 15:15). Jesus described his kind of friendship as being built on shared love of God and personal sacrifice (vv. 13, 15)—something He himself modeled and called us to pass on (v. 12). A couple of years after hearing that question, my wife and I suffered a significant loss. Darren, one of the few who knew what happened, traveled two hours to see me, listen to my anger and pain, and pray for me. Darren is a busy man who had plenty of other things to do with his day. But he followed Jesus’ example of sacrificial friendship. I really did have someone in my hour of need. The question now is whether others have a “friend at midnight” in me. For there are few better ways to make more friends than to be one.

Summary In this conversation, S Anthony Thomas shares personal stories of betrayal from friends, illustrating the pain of being lied to by those we trust. He recounts two significant experiences: one from childhood involving a friend who stole his prized football players, and another from his adult life in sales where a colleague attempted to steal a client. Through these narratives, he explores themes of trust, friendship, and the impact of betrayal on personal relationships. Ultimately, he emphasizes the importance of moving on from those who lie and making space for genuine connections. Takeaways You can love someone and they can still betray you. Betrayal can come from those you trust the most. It's important to learn from past betrayals without letting them affect future relationships. People often lie to maintain their own interests. Friendship should be built on trust and honesty. Not everyone you consider a friend has your best interests at heart. Sometimes, losing a liar can create space for better relationships. You can still treat others well despite past betrayals. Learning to recognize deceit can help protect you in the future. It's essential to move on from toxic relationships. Sound bites "They won't be missed." "It's pretty simple." "You dig? Of course you do." Fertility Docs Uncensored is hosted by Dr. Carrie Bedient from the Fertility Center of Las Vegas, Dr. Susan Hudson from Texas Fertility Center, and Dr. Abby Eblen from Nashville Fertility Center. In this episode, “Fibroids, Friend or Foe?” the docs dive into one of the most common—and often confusing—topics in reproductive medicine: uterine fibroids and their impact on fertility. They break down the different types of fibroids—submucosal, intramural, and subserosal—and explain why location is often more important than size when it comes to whether a fibroid should be removed. Fibroids that distort the uterine lining can interfere with embryo implantation by causing inflammation or friction, making pregnancy more difficult. The docs explain the surgical options for fibroid removal, including hysteroscopy (removal through the cervix), laparoscopy, and laparotomy (which address fibroids from outside the uterus). They also discuss fluid management during hysteroscopy to ensure patient safety. Beyond fertility concerns, fibroids may need to be removed if they're causing significant bleeding or pelvic pressure. Finally, they touch on recovery and why patients may need to wait several months after surgery before attempting pregnancy. If fibroids are part of your fertility journey, this episode is a must-listen. This episode was sponsored by ReceptivaDx.

Welcome to the fourth and final State of the Sport, where we we have been taking a hard look at what is REALLY going on in various sports over the summer with a subject matter expert.Today, Friend of the Show Christian Hinton will be dissecting the current State of the National Football League. The NFL is a sport, that is now, mainly about one position: quarterback. If you have one, you win a lot of games. If you do not, you lose a lot of games. It is that simple.Around the league, there's a lot of interesting storylines coming into the season. Can the Philadelphia Eagles repeat as Super Bowl Champions? Can the Chiefs become the first team in NFL history to make the Super Bowl in six out of the past seven seasons and win three Super Bowls in a four-year span or will a team like the Ravens or Bills finally break through in the AFC? Which rookies will breakout and which new signal caller will give their fanbase a reason to believe again, the way Jayden Daniels did for the Commanders last season. For every thought of hope, there is also a thought of failure. Which teams that have Super Bowl expectations will be disappointed by their fanbases and what teams will have their seasons end by the middle of September? And now ladies and gentleman, let me introduce to you, the man who is going to help the audience of Brandon's World understand the State of the NFL. He is Christian Hinton

Inheritance. Budgeting. Investing. Someone asks Jesus to tell their brother to divide the family inheritance with them, and Jesus says to be on guard against all kinds of greed. We ask Dr. Chris Croghan:Do experiences count as the possessions Jesus is warning about? Should you or should you not invest your money? What does it mean to be rich toward God? CARE OF SOULS - ADDICTIONIn Care of Souls, a special mini-series podcast from Luther House of Study, Lutheran pastors and theologians come together to explore the deeply personal and pastoral task of preaching to and caring for those struggling with life's challenging situations: addiction, death, family disharmony, and more. Rooted in the theology of the cross and the Lutheran tradition of radical grace, this series offers both theological depth and practical guidance for pastors, church workers, and lay leaders. With conversations, real-life stories, and reflections from the front lines of ministry, Care of Souls equips listeners to enter the broken places of addiction not with easy answers, but with the crucified and risen Christ.Because in the end, it's not about fixing people—it's about preaching the Gospel.Listen to Care of Souls wherever you listen to podcasts or on the Luther House website: Care of Souls - AddictionCONFIRMATION Does your church have a confirmation class? Luther House of Study is excited to present a comprehensive online confirmation curriculum. The curriculum includes interactive digital lessons and supplemental teacher guides featuring custom videos, quizzes, drag and drop tasks, discussion questions, scripture passages, and prayers about the Apostles' Creed, the 10 Commandments, the Lord's Prayer, and the Sacraments. lutherhouseofstudy.org/confirmationSING TO THE LORD Martin Luther said, "Next to the word of God, the art of music is the greatest treasure in the world." To understand the importance of hymnody in the Lutheran church, Lars Olson and Mason Van Essen sit down with Zachary Brockhoff to discuss the lectionary's hymns, their meaning and history, and how the music preaches the Gospel.
What is it about them, our mean friends? They treat us poorly, they don't call us back, they cancel plans at the last minute, and yet we keep coming back for more. Popular bullies exist in business, politics — everywhere. How do they stay so popular? Visit thisamericanlife.org/lifepartners to sign up for our premium subscription.Prologue: We hear kids recorded at Chicago's Navy Pier and at a public swimming pool discussing their mean friends. And Ira Glass interviews Lillie Allison, 15, about the pretty, popular girls who were her best friends—until they cast her out. (5 minutes)Act One: Jonathan Goldstein interrogates the girls, now grown up, who terrorized him and his classmates years ago in school—and finds they can be just as scary as ever. (18 minutes)Act Two: We conduct an experiment to test whether being nice actually pays by equipping two waitresses with hidden microphones to record their interactions. Each waitress is instructed to be super friendly with half of their tables while remaining aloof with the other half. We then compare the tips to see which approach was more profitable. (10 minutes)Act Three: A case study in every word from a friend meaning its opposite. (4 minutes)Act Four: An excerpt of Bernard Cooper's story about the bill he got from his own father, for the entire cost of his childhood. Actor Josh Hamilton reads.
