Evolution of Data Quality: Inside the Largest Fraud Study Ever Conducted with Henry LeGard of Verisoul

Welcome back to Intellicast! On today's episode, Brian is joined by Henry LeGard, CEO and founder of the fraud detection company Verisoul, for an in-depth discussion on the evolving state of data quality and fraud detection in market research. We kick off the podcast by having Henry share how Verisoul, a company built initially to stop banking and fintech fraud, has quickly become one of the most talked-about new players in market research. He details how the company came to be, and how they entered the market research industry in 2025 with zero clients and are now protecting nearly 100 million survey clicks per month across the industry. Henry explains how Verisoul's advanced fraud detection platform has had such a rapid impact on the industry. He shares how the team applied financial-grade fraud-prevention techniques to survey data collection, enabling them to detect and block the most sophisticated forms of digital fraud, including device spoofing, cross-continental proxy traffic, and bot farms operating at scale. From there, Brian and Henry dive into Verisoul's newly released Market Research Quality Report, which Henry describes as the largest fraud analysis ever published in the industry. For the report, the team analyzed more than 50 million sessions across 3,700 mobile apps in 190 countries, using a new proprietary technology that can identify the exact app where each respondent originated. Henry explains how this innovation was crucial in uncovering real patterns of fraud across the ecosystem, revealing which app categories generate the cleanest and riskiest respondent traffic. Brian and Henry also discuss how Verisoul's findings challenge many long-held assumptions about data quality. While larger apps and panels tend to have lower fraud rates, older respondent sources didn't necessarily perform better. The study also found that just five mobile apps accounted for more than 10% of all detected fraud, underscoring how small clusters of bad respondent sources can distort large portions of the industry's data. Later in the episode, Henry offers a perspective on the evolving sophistication of fraud, explaining that much of today's market research fraud is human-driven rather than automated. Organized groups in low-income countries are using SIM card farms, aged burner domains, proxy networks, and more to appear as legitimate U.S. or European respondents. Henry and Brian also talk about how Verisoul's recently launched transparency initiative — a “fraud or not” ranking, complete with a lighthearted tomato-throwing Easter egg for bottom performers, is designed to help the industry recognize who's getting data quality right. Rather than shaming providers, the goal is to encourage progress, reward transparency, and strengthen collaboration around fraud prevention. To close out the episode, Brian and Henry discuss Verisoul's creative marketing campaign, “We Smoke Fraud,” which debuted at the ESOMAR Congress in Prague. What started as a marketing stunt ended up earning the company some serious attention from venture capital investors. For those who live and breathe data quality, this episode is for you. The Energy Gang
Energy addition, not energy transition? What does it mean for the future of our energy system, and the climate? | Special episode recorded at ADIPEC, the world's largest energy event

The Energy Gang

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 8, 2025 45:16

As world leaders, businesses and NGOs start their journeys to Brazil for the COP30 climate talks, more than 200,000 people attended ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi, the world's biggest energy event. Energy Gang was there to bring you the highlights from the week's discussions. One of the key talking points was the theme of energy addition, rather than transition. In other words, the idea that new renewables and other low-carbon sources are adding to global energy supplies, rather than replacing fossil fuels. With forecasts showing an acceleration in power demand growth driven by AI, and the continuing need for increased energy supply to raise living standards in low and middle-income countries, calls for a rapid transition away from oil, gas and coal seem to many to be unrealistic. At ADIPEC, the conversation centred around the vision of new low-carbon supplies stacking on top of hydrocarbons, to reduce costs, increase access and cut emissions intensity. But there was confidence in the prospect of robust global demand for oil and gas, in particular, for decades to come. To debate that vision and assess what it means for the world, host Ed Crooks is joined by energy executives and analysts who have been part of the conversation. Dr Carole Nakhle is the founder and CEO of Crystol Energy, an independent advisory firm. She was first up to discuss whether decarbonisation targets are being pushed further into the future, and how they can be met if clean energy is complementing fossil fuels rather than replacing them. “Complementarity beats substitution,” Carole says. What does that mean for energy security, access and emissions? Next, Ed spoke with John Gilley, CEO of Kent, which designs and engineers assets for the energy industry, including both oil and gas and low-carbon technologies. John isn't worried about a slowdown in clean energy deployment. When energy is cheaper, it gets used, he says, and solar and wind keep winning on cost. He believes climate change is the greatest challenge of our times, and his purpose at Kent is to support ways to tackle it, while meeting the world's demand for energy. John and Ed talk it all through.Sascha Sissiou is sales director for the Middle East and Africa at Aerzen, a German manufacturer of equipment for oil and gas and other industries. Sascha argues that, far from the momentum towards decarbonisation slowing, it is actually speeding up, as reflected in demand from Aerzen's customers. Demand for flare-gas recovery and other emissions reduction technologies has grown, and Aerzen is rolling out new large compressors for the hydrogen industry. Sustainability standards now influence sourcing, logistics and manufacturing across industries from wastewater to petrochemicals. Next, Clay Seigle, senior fellow at the thinktank CSIS, talks about the implications of sustained oil demand for energy security. On climate, he highlights the importance of industry-led investments in methane controls and carbon capture. Looking ahead, permitting reform could emerge as the next big US energy story; Clay explains why. Finally, as the Energy Gang prepares to switch focus to COP30, Ed sat down with Bjorn Otto Sverdrup, who's the head of the secretariat for the Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter. They bring together more than 50 leading oil and gas companies from around the world to work together to cut their emissions. Bjorn says the industry's top CEOs are staying the course on near-term decarbonisation goals with high impact - cutting methane and eliminating routine flaring by 2030 – because they make operational and reputational sense. There will be more to come on this issue at COP30. We will be bringing you all the big stories and exclusive commentary and analysis on COP30 from our energy expert friends, as well as some new voices. So don't forget to follow the show wherever you get your podcasts, to keep up with all our coverage of the climate talks over the next two weeks. This episode was recorded live at ADIPEC 2025, the world's largest energy event, held in Abu Dhabi from 3–6 November. With more than 205,000 attendees and 1,800 speakers, this year's theme - Energy Intelligence Impact - sparked vital conversations about the future of energy. A researcher in the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) has issued a request for the public to help create the largest Irish archive of photos of the Northern Lights. In May and October 2024 last, the northern lights were visible across the island of Ireland, caused by some of the most intense geomagnetic storms of the 21st century. These storms were highly documented by people across the island of Ireland through photos on their phones and cameras, and DIAS researchers are now asking for people to share these images as part a of a citizen science research project. To find out more about the Northern Lights and submit your photos visit https://www.dias.ie/cosmicphysics/astrophysics/aurora-eire/ Dr Alexandra Ruth Fogg, Postdoctoral Fellow with DIAS School of Cosmic Physics, is the lead researcher who is asking for the public to contribute their images to her research so as to create a comprehensive dataset: "We want to create the first archive of auroral photos from the island of Ireland during these exciting events. Using these photos, we will be able to map the location, brightness, colours and shapes of the aurora across Ireland during these two storms. All of these characteristics of the aurora can tell us different things about what's happening in space. This will give us new and unprecedented information about space weather local to Ireland. "This research will contribute to our understanding of space weather, which is a natural hazard and will help to bolster local space weather preparedness for the island of Ireland, which is a priority for the Irish government". Calling for as many people as possible to submit images as they can, Dr. Fogg said: "The more images we collect from the public, the more information we will be able to find out. If we are able to gather a large archive of photos from people across the island of Ireland, our dataset can become one of the best scientific resources for analysis of the structure and form of the aurora during these two storms". With torso control, we clamp or hook onto our opponent's torso so we can hold them in position or rotate around them. With lever control, we use our opponent's arms, legs, and/or head to create leverage. Attacking a single lever usually affords more force, whereas attacking multiple levers simultaneously usually affords more control. Most teams, people and companies don't have a motivation problem - they have a design problem. In this episode I sit down with Ricardo Lopes Costa, founder and CTO of Funifier from Brazil and the author of "The Fantastic Engagement Factory: how to motivate people on a large scale with gamification". We uncover how gamification, psychology, and smart feedback loops can turn apathetic workflows into performance engines people actually want to use. Ricardo's company, Funifier, has worked with global brands like Coca-Cola, HP, Banco do Brasil, and Caixa Econômica Federal, helping them turn dry KPIs into dynamic challenges that spark human motivation — often with billion-dollar impact. Ricardo shares how:A small experiment with locked online lessons accidentally sparked his obsession with engagement.A single leaderboard turned learning into a movement across Brazil.Caixa's “Tamo Junto 9Bi+” initiative became the world's largest gamification case — driving over $1 billion USD in additional profit in just months.Recognition and belonging often outperform money when it comes to performance.Even small businesses — from cupcake stands to ice-cream shops — can gamify experiences to make people participate more. Why the future of leadership lies in designing human experiences, not just managing numbers.“Engagement is not a bonus — it's an asset, just like money or technology.” — Ricardo Lopes CostaIf you're a leader, HR professional, or entrepreneur who wants to build teams that care, perform, and grow — this episode will show you how to make motivation measurable.Key TakeawaysMotivation is designable — when you treat engagement like a system, not a feeling.Recognition > rewards: appreciation drives sustained effort more than money.Start small: pick one unmotivated area, personalize it, make it visible, make it fun.Emotional design is the missing layer in most transformation and culture projects.Everyone — even small businesses — can use gamification principles to spark engagement.
