We are thrilled to share this Special Edition COBT. Continuing our California Series, we had the opportunity to tour the Diablo Canyon Power Plant and sit down with Maureen Zawalick, Senior Vice President and Chief Risk Officer at PG&E Corporation, and Matt Crozat, Executive Director of Strategy and Policy Development at the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI). Our visit was particularly timely as the U.S. Department of Energy recently awarded PG&E $271 million to support extended operations at Diablo Canyon, while Governor Gavin Newsom recently indicated he would leave the decision on extending the plant beyond 2030 to the next administration. Diablo Canyon produces nearly 10% of California's electricity and is the state's only operating nuclear power plant. In our conversation, we explore Diablo Canyon's history and critical role in California's power system, the remarkable shift from plans to close the plant to extending its operating life, and how rising electricity demand, electrification, AI, and data centers are reshaping the state's energy outlook. We discuss the broader nuclear renaissance, the importance of preserving and investing in existing nuclear plants, and the role nuclear power plays in providing affordable, reliable power and grid stability. We cover the regulatory path for Diablo Canyon beyond 2030, the benefits of long-term planning for workforce retention and uranium procurement, and the plant's impact on electricity affordability. Maureen shares PG&E's approach to safety and risk management, including seismic safety, water use and environmental stewardship, wildfire, cyber, AI, and the importance of culture and processes in managing risk. We discuss Diablo Canyon's relationship with the surrounding community and the importance of public engagement and outreach. We end by looking ahead to new nuclear technologies and SMRs, changing attitudes toward nuclear energy at both the state and federal levels, California's nuclear moratorium, and the need for durable, long-term energy policy. We also discuss the connection between affordable and reliable electricity, manufacturing, economic competitiveness, and where businesses ultimately choose to invest and grow. It was a fascinating discussion and an incredible opportunity to see Diablo Canyon firsthand.

More public access is opening up this fall, but hunters and anglers need to know where. The Department of the Interior has finalized the largest expansion of hunting and sport fishing opportunities in U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service history, creating nearly 1,500 new opportunities across 111 national wildlife refuges and fish hatcheries in 32 states. More than 92 million acres, representing over 95% of the National Wildlife Refuge System, are now available for hunting. The Sportsman's Voice Roundup breaks down what this expanded access means for hunters, anglers, and anyone looking for new public-land opportunities this fall. The rule also modernizes more than 1,000 refuge-specific regulations, bringing federal requirements into better alignment with state fish and wildlife laws. He got a college degree, walked into a pharmaceutical sales interview, heard the number $36,000 a year, and drove straight back to the vacuum cleaner office to ask for the highest commission they would pay.Then one afternoon, his kids ran to a beat-up ice cream truck in their neighborhood, paid $22 for freezer-burned ice cream from a guy fresh out of prison, and Tony saw a gap. Two years of obsession later, he launched Kona Ice. Today Kona Ice is the largest food truck company in the world with over 1,700 units, has given back over $130 million to local communities, and spawned two additional brands. It is a completely different experience.Pain and suffering are the prerequisites for real growth. Tony said the NVIDIA CEO told Stanford graduates he hoped they would have pain and suffering. Tony agreed. He intentionally launched new brands when things got comfortable because the discomfort is where the learning is.College is not the answer for everyone. The question is whether the education you are paying for will service the debt you incur to get it. Tony's kids never finished college and are all doing extremely well.The best proof your model works is when someone who is not like you runs it successfully. When the non-salesperson in Georgia started producing results with Kona Ice, Tony knew he had a real business.Wisdom is not built in a classroom. In 1996, a pipe bomb packed with masonry nails exploded in Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park, killing two people and injuring more than a hundred. The FBI's first suspect was Richard Jewell, the security guard who'd found the bag and helped clear the area. By the time he was cleared 88 days later, investigators had no idea who they were looking for. Columnist John Archibald had covered the Olympics that summer, never imagining the bomber would come to his own city.On January 29, 1998, a bomb hidden in a FedEx box exploded outside a Birmingham abortion clinic, killing an off-duty police officer and gravely wounding nurse Emily Lyons. This time someone saw the bomber walk away — a UAB student named Jermaine Hughes, who followed him to a gray Nissan pickup with North Carolina plates. The name that came back was Eric Robert Rudolph.
