EP 411 Following the Sign: Randy Flannery on Tracking and Stalking Big-Woods Whitetails

Untamed Heritage

Long before trail cameras, mapping apps and advanced hunting electronics, successful deer hunters learned to read the woods. In this episode of DSC's Campfires with Larry Weishuhn, Larry welcomes renowned Master Maine Guide Randy Flannery for an in-depth conversation about the traditional art of tracking and stalking mature whitetail bucks. Randy is the owner and operator of Wilderness Escape Outfitters in northern Maine and a lifelong student of big-woods whitetails. Drawing from decades of experience, he explains that successful tracking involves much more than simply finding hoofprints and following them through the snow. A tracker must learn to interpret the animal's pace, direction, body language, habitat choices and likely destination. The conversation explores how hunters can judge whether a track belongs to a mature buck, recognize when a deer may be catchable, use changing wind and terrain to their advantage and avoid rushing into the very cover where a buck is likely to be waiting. At its heart, this episode is about preserving a form of woodsmanship that can only be developed through patience, observation and time spent in the field. How Randy was introduced to deer hunting and traditional woodsmanship Lessons passed down through generations of northern Maine hunters The difference between merely following a track and actually interpreting it How stride, track size and movement patterns can reveal clues about a buck Recognizing whether a track is fresh enough to pursue How to decide whether you are gaining ground or endlessly trailing a deer Why mature bucks frequently use terrain, cover and wind to protect themselves Reading feeding areas, bedding cover and natural travel corridors How snow conditions influence a tracking hunt The importance of slowing down as a hunter gets closer to the animal Why a tracker must constantly look ahead instead of staring only at the ground Using the wind without allowing it to dictate every decision How a buck may circle, pause or position itself to monitor what is following The role of patience, instinct and experience in closing the final distance Why map-and-compass knowledge remains an essential backcountry skill Making the first ethical shot opportunity count What modern hunters lose when technology replaces woodsmanship Randy's efforts to teach tracking and stalking skills to a new generation A deer track is not simply a mark in the ground. It is part of a constantly unfolding story. A knowledgeable tracker studies how far apart the tracks are, how deeply they penetrate the snow or soil, whether the deer was walking, feeding or moving with purpose, and how the surrounding habitat may influence its next move. Randy explains that the objective is not to keep your eyes locked on the individual prints. The hunter must periodically stop, raise their head and search the woods ahead. The buck—not the track—is the ultimate destination. No single measurement provides a perfect answer, but several clues can help a hunter make an educated judgment. A large track, wide stance, long stride and deliberate movement may suggest a mature animal. The way the deer navigates terrain, chooses cover and reacts to potential danger can provide additional information. Randy's approach emphasizes putting several clues together rather than relying on one isolated sign. One of the most important decisions a tracker makes is whether to continue following a particular animal. Weather, snow conditions, the freshness of the track, the deer's pace and the hunter's ability all help determine whether the pursuit is realistic. A buck that is feeding or moving naturally may eventually offer an opportunity. A deer that has been seriously alarmed may continue putting distance between itself and the hunter. The tracker must continually evaluate the sign and be willing to adjust—or abandon—the pursuit when the evidence calls for it. Finding a track may be the easy part. Closing the final distance requires discipline. As the sign becomes fresher, the hunter must become increasingly careful. Every step, sound and shift in wind direction matters. Mature bucks often stop, circle or select bedding locations that allow them to detect approaching danger. Success comes from resisting the urge to hurry and carefully examining every opening, shadow and piece of cover ahead. Modern hunting technology can be useful, but Randy cautions against allowing equipment to replace foundational outdoor skills. Knowing how to navigate, understand terrain, interpret animal sign, anticipate behavior and remain safe in remote country creates a more capable and self-reliant hunter. Randy's tracking and stalking schools at Wilderness Escape Outfitters are designed to preserve these traditional skills through practical, boots-on-the-ground instruction in the Maine woods. (Wilderness Escape) The best deer trackers do not simply follow where a buck has been. They study the evidence, anticipate where the animal is going and understand why it is making each move. Becoming that kind of hunter requires patience, humility and a willingness to learn something every time you enter the woods. Randy Flannery is a Master Maine Guide, seminar speaker, traditional whitetail tracker and owner of Wilderness Escape Outfitters near Danforth, Maine. Randy learned the fundamentals of tracking and stalking from his grandfather and uncles while growing up in the northern Maine woods. He has spent decades guiding hunters and teaching the practical woodsmanship required to pursue mature whitetails in remote wilderness country. (Springfield Sportsmen's Show) Wilderness Escape Outfitters is a four-season sporting camp located on Upper Hot Brook Lake. In addition to its tracking and stalking schools, the operation offers hunting, fishing, paddling, winter recreation, lodging and family wilderness experiences. (Wilderness Escape) Reading the Woods: Randy Flannery's Big-Buck Tracking Secrets Track Smarter, Hunt Slower: Big-Woods Wisdom with Randy Flannery Beyond the Hoofprint: The Traditional Art of Tracking Mature Whitetails The Buck Is the Destination: Randy Flannery on Becoming a Better Tracker Finding a deer track is easy. Understanding the story it tells takes a lifetime. Master Maine Guide Randy Flannery joins Larry Weishuhn for an in-depth conversation about tracking and stalking mature big-woods whitetails. Learn how experienced trackers interpret tracks, wind, terrain and deer behavior—and why patience may be the most important piece of hunting equipment you carry. Can you tell the size of a buck from its track? How do you know whether you are closing the distance—or following a deer you will never catch? Master Maine Guide Randy Flannery joins Larry Weishuhn to share hard-earned lessons from a lifetime of tracking and stalking whitetails in the northern Maine wilderness. This episode is packed with traditional woodsmanship, practical deer-hunting knowledge and a powerful reminder that technology can never replace the ability to read the woods. It's about the surprising relational cost of our habits, the parts of ourselves we genuinely need to grow up, and the beautiful parts we may have accidentally been trying to get rid of along the way.Because maybe maturity isn't becoming less like yourself.Maybe it's learning to steward yourself so well that the best parts of who God made you to be can come out more freely.Mature it. Marriage is not simply about finding someone you love; it requires the maturity to handle the commitment that marriage demands. Jesus' disciples recognized how serious marriage is when divorce is not an option. Jesus responded by pointing to the maturity required to live a married life. Before getting married, we should consider not only whether we have found the right person but also whether we have developed the maturity necessary to live a married life. __________ Matthew 19:8-11 MSG __________ Partner with Us: https://churchforentrepreneurs.com/partner Connect with Us: https://churchforentrepreneurs.com __________

X2M.262 — Clé: Entry into the Whole Clé means key. It follows Cour and completes the final coordinate of CR21. Cour forms the shared ground upon which a reconciled people can live; Clé names the receiver-threshold through which approach opens toward habitation. It does not confer possession of the whole, manufacture authority, or declare that every promise has arrived. It asks how the same person can receive greater participation, capacity, and responsibility without grasping, losing identity, confusing the gift with its Giver, or becoming the imagined source of what was received. Psalm 27 supplies the beginning. David's “one thing” is not the house, throne, inheritance, or victory, but dwelling with the Lord, beholding His beauty, and seeking Him. God is already the uncreated Source, supreme Good, ultimate Portion, and final End. Clé therefore begins by ordering every created desire beneath desire for God Himself.¹ Abraham demonstrates the movement of faith. God identifies Himself as Abraham's shield and reward, then gives the genuine promise of innumerable offspring. Genesis distinguishes God, the promised good, and the human means used to pursue it. Abraham learns to receive the promise from the Giver, release control over its fulfillment, and refuse possessive mastery even over the true gift. Faith does not extinguish desire; it returns desire to trust.² Proverbs 8:30 gives Clé its governing paradox: “The master craftsman must remain the nursing child.” Mature craftsmanship must remain joined to childlike dependence and delight. The Solomonic mind cannot outrun the Davidic heart. Wisdom, architecture, wealth, and authority remain safe only while the bearer continues receiving as a child and valuing people before the structures meant to serve them.³ Ecclesiastes supplies the interior key. Hebel reveals that created life cannot be seized against time, loss, and death. Yitrôn asks what lasting surplus can finally be possessed; ḥēleq answers with the portion God gives. The response is neither despair nor rejection of the world, but reverent enjoyment of food, work, friendship, generosity, marriage, play, and the ordinary gifts already present. Yitrôn is the question; ḥēleq is the answer; fear of God is the posture; judgment is the final horizon.⁴ Clé compresses this movement: 1 → 0ᵣ → 7 → 0꜀ ⇒ 1′ The present whole passes through relinquishment; the appointed portion is received in lawful differentiation; grasping and self-origination are cleared; and the same person emerges as a more integrated whole before God. The first zero empties the hand without erasing the person. The seven differentiates the gift without dividing God. The second zero clears possessiveness. The resulting 1′ is not divine totality, but received maturity. Clé, then, is entry into the whole through the appointed portion. Christ remains the One who holds the whole, opens the scroll, and governs the seven stars. The key does not unlock everything for the self. It unlocks the self from the need to possess everything, making faithful participation in a far greater field possible.⁵ The earlier record forms the receiver; CR17 tests the constitution; CR21 governs the approach; Ecclesiastes returns the whole to God; and Clé opens the appointed portion toward habitation. Relinquish the whole. Receive the portion. Become whole before God. ⸻ Glorification | The Final Frontier Decrease time over target: Venmo / PayPal @clastronaut Cash App $clastronaut ⸻ ¹ Ps. 27:1–6; John 15:1–11. ² Gen. 15:1–6; 16:1–16; 22:1–19; Heb. 6:13–20. ³ Prov. 8:22–31; 1 Kings 3:5–14; Matt. 18:1–4. ⁴ Eccl. 1:2–3; 2:24–26; 3:1–13; 5:18–20; 12:13–14. ⁵ Rev. 1:16; 5:1–10; 2 Pet. 1:3–4.

Abbie's key takeaway: TikTok Shop demands intentional community building, not just media buying. Here are the 3 action items that Josh identified from this episode:Treat GMV Max as a system—not a tool Don't “set and forget.” Review campaigns weekly, adjust creatives, and intervene when spend or performance drops.Build demand before conversion Run consistent upper-funnel campaigns (views, engagement, followers) to fuel affiliates, boost product card conversions, and create a halo effect.Segment products by lifecycle to scale smarter Categorize SKUs into cold, mature, and hero—then tailor budget, targeting, and ROI goals for each stage to avoid wasted spend and accelerate winners.Timestamps:00:03:35 Introduction to GMV Max CampaignsAbbie discusses the misconception that GMV Max campaigns are "set and forget," highlighting the need for hands-on optimization.00:05:14 The Importance of Upper Funnel CampaignsAbbie explains why running non-GMV Max campaigns like video views and follower campaigns is non-negotiable for brand building.00:08:15 Targeting and Insights from Top-of-Funnel AdsDetails on targeting strategies for upper funnel campaigns and how learnings from them inform the affiliate and GMV Max strategy.00:13:01 A Framework for Structuring GMV Max CampaignsAbbie outlines a three-pillar campaign structure based on product lifecycle: Cold Start, Mature, and Hero products.00:16:20 Setting and Scaling ROAS TargetsAdvice on setting initial ROAS targets, when to scale them, and using budget spend percentage as a key indicator.00:19:29 The Halo Effect of Upper Funnel on GMV MaxExplaining how top-of-funnel brand awareness campaigns indirectly boost GMV Max performance, traffic, and affiliate interest.00:22:10 Manufacturing Virality and Building a Creator CommunityThe discussion shifts to the necessity of intentionally building buzz and relationships with creators to succeed on TikTok Shop.00:28:57 Tactics for Optimizing Within GMV MaxAbbie shares a tactic of manually creative boosting high-potential content that the GMV Max algorithm might be overlooking.00:33:24 Profitability and the Halo Effect on Other ChannelsDiscussing the path to profitability on TikTok Shop and the importance of measuring the sales impact on Amazon and DTC.00:39:37 Cross-Channel Strategy and TikTok Shop ExclusivityThe importance of making TikTok Shop the most desirable sales channel during promotions by offering exclusive deals or bundles.00:40:56 Three Actionable TakeawaysJosh summarizes the key strategies: start with top-of-funnel ads, scale ROAS when spending 80%+ of budget, and structure campaigns by product lifecycle.Resources mentioned in this episode:Josh Hadley on LinkedIneComm Breakthrough ConsultingeComm Breakthrough PodcastEmail Josh Hadley: Josh@eCommBreakthrough.comTools and Websites"Phospho": "00:38:43""Claude AI": "00:43:50"Books"Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself by Joe Dispenza": "00:43:16"Notable People"Julia (CEO of Amie)": "00:44:22"General Insights"GMV Max": "00:03:58""Upper Funnel Campaigns": "00:05:14""Affiliate Strategy": "00:12:54"Episode Sponsor:This episode is brought to you by eComm Breakthrough Consulting where I help seven-figure e-commerce owners grow to eight figures. I started my business in 2015 and grew it to an eight-figure brand in seven years.I made mistakes along the way that made the path to eight figures longer. Navigating Actions It’s possible to hear God’s Word, agree with it, even be convicted by it, and still walk away unchanged. In James 1:22–25, James warns us not to confuse hearing truth with living truth. God’s Word is like a mirror: it reveals what’s actually there, but transformation happens when we respond to what we’ve seen. In Week 4 of NAVIGATE, we explore the difference between spiritual inspiration and spiritual maturity, why God’s Word must move from something we hear to something we practice, and what can happen in our lives and families when we actually do something with what God has shown us. Information doesn’t change your life. Application does. Because immature faith can be inspired by the Word. Mature faith is transformed by it. James 1:22-25 Discussion topics Icebreaker:What’s one of the funniest or worst decisions you’ve ever made? (Keep it light… wrong turn on vacation, bad haircut, impulse purchase, terrible first car, etc.) HEAD – What did Jesus say to you through the Word? Read James 1:22–25 together. What differences do you notice between the person who merely hears God’s Word and the person who actually does what it says? Sunday’s message said: “One of the easiest ways to deceive yourself spiritually is to confuse conviction with transformation.”  What’s the difference between feeling convicted about something and actually being transformed by it? Why do you think James describes God’s Word as both a “perfect law” and something that “gives freedom”? How can obedience to God’s boundaries actually produce greater freedom? HEART – How did it make you feel? Think about the mirror illustration from James. What has God shown you about yourself recently that you’ve been tempted to see, acknowledge… and then walk away from without changing? Sunday’s message described our culture as: “Over-informed and under-practiced.” Where might that describe your spiritual life right now? Where are you personally most likely to confuse knowing what Scripture says with actually living what Scripture says? HANDS – What are you going to do with it? What’s one thing you already know God wants you to do that you haven’t done yet? Finish this sentence:  “Because of what God has shown me, this week I will __________.”  Make the answer specific enough that you’ll know whether you actually did it. What could keep you from following through? What can you put in place today to make obedience more likely? Family Month Check-In Did anyone use the Family Take-Home Kit this week? What was the funniest or most memorable part? What conversation happened at home because of it? Did your kids teach you anything from Sunday’s lesson? Note to all the Guides: Many people come into this discussion carrying significant decisions about marriage, parenting, finances, health, or work. Resist the temptation to solve one another’s problems. Instead, help the group practice seeking God’s wisdom together by asking, “What principles from Scripture apply here?” Encourage participants to leave with greater confidence in God’s character and His Word rather than simply a list of opinions. Bishop Jim's insightful messages help others find THEIR METRON through M~otivation E~nlightenment T~ranscendence R~enewal O~utreach and N~etworking Learn more: www.bishinthenow.com Follow Jim Swilley on Youtube to see the videos live Sundays at 11:11 am – https://www.youtube.com/bishinthenow   Bishop Jim Swilley continues “The Healing Word” by exploring healing not simply as something that comes vertically “from God,” but as something that also moves horizontally through human connection, relationships, words, thoughts, and presence. Beginning with Jesus healing the centurion's servant from a distance, Jim considers how difficult circumstances can actually become catalysts for revelation. The message moves into the power of our thoughts and intentions, while avoiding the simplistic idea that every negative experience is something we somehow attracted. Ultimately, the emphasis is on connection: sometimes the healing word is encouragement, sometimes it is simply hearing the voice of someone you trust, and sometimes it is an uncomfortable truth spoken by someone who loves you. Healing happens as we remain open, nurture our relationships, release offenses, reframe painful memories, and become intentional about the energy and words we send into one another's lives. Main Takeaways 1. Sometimes the negative becomes the catalyst for revelation.Jim returns to the Roman centurion who tells Jesus, “speak the word only” and his servant will be healed. The centurion understood that physical proximity was not necessary for healing. Jim's larger point is that circumstances that make us uncomfortable, insecure, rejected, or seemingly trapped can sometimes push us into seeing possibilities we would never have considered otherwise. Scripture: Matthew 8:5–13; Romans 8:28; Hebrews 11:7 “Sometimes the worst thing that ever happened to you may be the best thing that ever happened to you.” — Bishop Jim Swilley 2. The healing word is not limited by distance.Psalm 107 says that God “sent his word, and healed them.” Jim connects this with prayer, positive intention, “sending good energy,” and simply intentionally holding another person in your thoughts. Different people may use different terminology, but the underlying idea is connection that transcends physical distance. Scripture: Psalm 107:20; Matthew 8:8 3. Healing is horizontal as well as vertical.Spirituality is not only about our relationship with God. Jim emphasizes the importance of the “horizontal beam” — our relationships with one another. Jesus connected loving God with loving our neighbor, making human relationship an essential expression of spiritual life. Scripture: Matthew 22:37–40; Ecclesiastes 4:12 “It's the relationships in your life that reveal the Christ to you.” — Bishop Jim Swilley 4. Prayer should seek agreement rather than control.Prayer can become unhealthy when it is really an attempt to make another person's circumstances conform to what we think should happen. Jim argues that before praying for someone, we should understand what that person actually wants rather than assuming we know the proper outcome. Scripture: Romans 8:26; Matthew 18:19 5. Mature spirituality moves beyond everything being simply good or bad.Using the imagery of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil versus the Tree of Life, Jim challenges binary thinking. Heroes can be flawed. Villains can be wounded people. Painful circumstances can produce unexpected growth. The cross itself demonstrates that suffering and resurrection can exist within the same story. Scripture: Genesis 2:9; Hebrews 12:2 6. Unreleased offenses can keep the past alive in the present.Jim uses Charles Manson as an extreme example of what can happen when someone continually collects offenses and interprets everything through what has been done to them. The lesson is not to deny what happened, but to process it rather than allowing yesterday's pain to dictate tomorrow's behavior. “When you keep collecting offenses, it makes you crazy after a while.” — Bishop Jim Swilley 7. Our thoughts matter, which makes intentional living both freeing and challenging.Jim shares a message from Charles McFall responding to the statement, “Every thought I think is creating my future.” “It is as freeing as it is terrifying. Living without intent is scary and it's hard work to always be intentional.” — Charles McFall Jim acknowledges the tension: we cannot simply turn off unwanted thoughts. The practical work is learning how to reframe them rather than repeatedly allowing painful memories or fearful projections to control the present. Scripture: Romans 12:2; Philippians 4:8 8. Sometimes we need someone's presence more than their advice.Jim describes calling someone close to him during an intense week and deliberately not talking about what was troubling him. The conversation itself was enough. Sometimes healing energy comes through familiarity, connection, a trusted voice, or someone simply saying, “It's going to be okay.” Scripture: Proverbs 17:17; Galatians 6:2 9. A healing word isn’t always a comfortable word.Like medicine, something can hurt while ultimately helping us. Someone who genuinely loves us may tell us something we do not want to hear. Healthy relationships create enough safety for truth, vulnerability, correction, and growth. “A healing word sometimes is an uncomfortable word. It's a challenging word.” — Bishop Jim Swilley Scripture: Proverbs 27:6; Ephesians 4:15 10. Relationships are worth maintaining because we need connection. One of the strongest conclusions of the message is that independence should not become isolation. Keeping relational “airwaves clear,” releasing unnecessary offenses, communicating honestly, and understanding how different people connect can become part of our own healing. Scripture: Ecclesiastes 4:9–12; 1 Corinthians 12:20–21 The Central Thought You cannot control every thought that enters your mind, every painful memory, every difficult circumstance, or every unknown in your future. But you can change the framework through which you interpret them. Instead of repeatedly wounding yourself with yesterday, you can extract whatever truth is useful, release what belongs to someone else, and remain open to the people whose presence brings healing into your life. “Hang on and keep staying open and get outside of yourself and let people speak into your life and nourish and nurture your relationships, because you never know when you're going to need that person.” — Bishop Jim Swilley

Most hunters spend the offseason obsessing over the wrong things. They're pouring over maps, pulling cards, debating stand locations. And none of that matters if they walk in like they own the place and blow every deer out of the county before they ever climb a tree. I've been guilty of it. I think most honest hunters have. You find a great spot, you're fired up, and you walk straight to it. Mature deer don't care how good your Intel is. They care about pressure. And the way you get in and out of your stand is pressure. Access isn't a logistics problem. It's a hunting problem. It's actually the hunting problem. What I've come to understand after enough seasons of doing it wrong is that access needs to be treated like a system. Not a path from your truck to your stand, but a thought-out process that accounts for wind, thermals, deer movement, and the cumulative pressure you're putting on a piece of ground over the course of a season. Every entry. Every exit. Every time your scent drifts into a bedding area you didn't know was there. The hunters who consistently kill mature deer aren't smarter than you. They're more disciplined about the invisible stuff. The stuff that doesn't show up on a Spartan camera card or in a HuntStand layer. The way they approach their spots is calculated in a way that most hunters never think to calculate. In this episode, I break down how I think about access as a complete system: route planning that actually accounts for deer behavior, scent management that goes beyond spraying your boots, and the mindset shift that separates guys who hunt hard from guys who hunt smart. If you've ever wondered why a spot goes cold after a few sits, this one might answer that question. The best stand in the world is worthless if the deer know you're there before you do. Marriage In Every Season - Good Ol' Days

Citizen Church Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 16, 2026

Every marriage moves through seasons — and it's easy to get stuck longing for the one you had instead of embracing the one you're in. Whether you're newly engaged, raising toddlers, running a full house, watching your kids leave, or rediscovering each other as empty nesters, this message will help you make the most of exactly where you are right now. This week, Pastor Dustin and Mandy walk through the 5 Seasons of Marriage and share three practical shifts every couple needs to make: Stop chasing a feeling. Young love says "I can't imagine life without you." Mature love says "I've lived a lot of life, and I'm still choosing you." Feelings may start a relationship, but choices sustain it. Don't get stuck in a season. Every season of marriage gives you new roles — husband and wife, parents, empty nesters, grandparents, caregivers. The danger isn't in the season changing; it's becoming so nostalgic for an old one that you miss what's beautiful about the one you're in now. Grow together as you change. The goal of marriage was never to avoid change — it's to keep growing toward each other instead of away from each other as you do. Because in the end, marriage isn't only about happiness — it's about holiness. And what marriage reveals in us, God can use to refine us. Scriptures referenced: Proverbs 24:3 — By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established. Proverbs 20:6 — "Many claim to have unfailing love, but a faithful person who can find?" Ecclesiastes 3:1 — "For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven." Ecclesiastes 7:10 — "Do not say, 'Why were the old days better than these?'" James 1:19 — "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry." Ephesians 5:25 — "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her." Proverbs 27:17 — "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." Galatians 5:22-23 — the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. A prayer for your marriage: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of marriage. Help us to choose each other in every season and to never take for granted what You have given us. Give us grace to embrace where we are, wisdom to grow together, and strength to remain faithful through every change. Use our marriages to shape us, refine us, and make us more like You. May our marriages honor You and show the world what faithful love looks like. Amen

Co-Host Regan Archibald (https://mountaintoppodcast.com/ageless) None of us are getting any younger, although the truth is we don't necessarily have to look or feel old, either. It seems obvious when said out loud that everyone--including us as men--would love to be attractive to women for as many years as we can, and feel great physically for as long as possible too. My first-time guest is Dr. Regan Archibald, who is the founder of the very successful Ageless Future practice. Whatever age you are now, it's never too early--or too late--to set this life-changing info into motion. To kick the show off, we dispel some of the myths men have about looking good as we mature, including that study that claims women find men attractive up to age 55. Next, we talk about the fascinating concept of identifying as someone who is younger, and how to do that authentically instead of looking weird or pathetic. How much more timely is this topic now that the promise of expanding the human lifespan is becoming reality? How true is it that many guys let themselves get (and feel) "old" because it gives them an excuse? What are the subtle ways the company we keep affects our long-term health? What is the interesting complaint about men that we hear most often from women 55 and older? One of Regan's quotes is, "Many ambitious professionals unknowingly trade decades of long term health for a few years of professional success." How can we achieve better balance in our lives in that regard? Finally, what if you're a guy who's showing signs of slowing down and looking and/or feeling old? What can you do right now to turn that ship around? On today's episode, we sit down with Jeff Helmers of Big Rack Trophy Products and his daughter Cathryn Howland to break down an incredible small-acreage success story. Jeff's 40 acres have produced more than 40 mature bucks, while Cathryn has killed her target buck for 23 consecutive years, including multiple bucks in the 140–160-inch+ range. We dive into how they went from having virtually no deer to consistently producing mature bucks through smart property design, a 30 acre sanctuary, no-impact access, strict hunting schedules, and just two proven stands that have produced for more than 30 years. Jeff also explains why he doesn't use cell cameras, how to enter and exit without alerting bedded bucks, how to stack the odds in your favor at stand locations, and how to maximize a small property without spending a fortune. Faith in the Fire

Welcome to episode 258 of Grasp the Bible. In this episode, we will examine faith in the fire — what Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego teach us about trusting God when deliverance is not guaranteed, and obedience may cost everything.  Key takeaways:   The furnace did not create the faith of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego — it revealed it. Crisis does not build character; it exposes what is already there. You do not develop convictions in the crisis. You discover in the crisis what convictions you have already developed. Their response showed no panic, no search for loopholes, no deliberation. Just calm, settled resolve. Why? Because they had already decided — long before the furnace — that they would worship Yahweh alone regardless of consequences. The heat of the moment is the worst time to figure out what you believe. They distinguished clearly between God's ability and God's will. “The God we serve is able to deliver us” — no doubt about His power. “But even if He does not” — full submission to His will. Mature faith trusts God's character when it cannot understand His plan. Immature faith says, “I will trust God if He does what I want.” Mature faith says, “I will trust God whether or not He does what I want.” Their obedience was not contingent on deliverance. They were not negotiating. They were declaring. God's love is not measured by whether He gives us what we ask for. It is demonstrated by what He has already done in Christ. Unanswered prayer is not evidence of God's absence — it may be evidence that He is accomplishing purposes beyond what we can see. Their faithfulness was not contingent on rescue — and rescue came because of their faithfulness. They did not know they would be delivered when they took their stand. They were prepared to die. Faithfulness means doing right because it is right, regardless of outcome. We are outcome-oriented people who measure faithfulness by results. The three Hebrews define faithfulness differently: obedience to God's commands regardless of consequences. Redefine success as faithfulness, not outcomes.  Quotable:   The furnace question is not “Will God deliver me?” It is “Will I worship Him even if He doesn't?” Faith in the fire is not about demanding rescue — it is about trusting the God who is worthy of worship whether the answer is yes or no.  Application:    Settle your convictions before the crisis arrives. The time to decide what you believe about Christ's lordship, the authority of Scripture, and the non-negotiables of obedience is now — not when you are standing in front of the furnace. Will you compromise biblical truth to keep your job? Deny Christ to preserve a relationship? Conform to cultural pressure to avoid social cost? Decide now. When the pressure comes, your conviction will produce courage — or your lack of it will produce compromise.  Stop demanding that God prove His love through favorable outcomes. “If God really loved me, He would heal this, fix that, give me this.” The three Hebrews destroy that theology. The cross already proved God's love. You do not need rescue to confirm what Calvary already demonstrated. When you face unanswered prayer, resist the conclusion that God is absent or indifferent. Trust His character when you cannot understand His ways.  Redefine faithfulness as obedience, not outcomes. What would it look like to keep worshiping, keep obeying, keep trusting if God never answers your prayer the way you want? If the prodigal does not come home? If the health does not improve? If the ministry does not grow? The measure of your faith is not what God does in response — it is what you do regardless. Obey today whether tomorrow brings rescue or not.  Learn the difference between God's ability and God's will — and submit to both. Confidence in God's power and submission to God's plan are not in tension — they are the two halves of mature faith. Pray boldly for deliverance. Believe He is able. Then hold the outcome loosely. He may be more concerned with your holiness than your comfort, and more interested in writing a story bigger than your rescue.  Connect with us:    Web site:  https://springbaptist.org  Facebook:   https://www.facebook.com/SBCKleinCampus (Klein Campus) https://www.facebook.com/SpringBaptist (Spring Campus)  Need us to pray for you? Navigating Decisions Every day we make decisions. Some are small. Others shape the direction of our families, our relationships, and our future. The question isn’t whether we’ll face decisions, but where we’ll turn for wisdom when we do. In Week 2 of NAVIGATE, we dive into James 1:5 and discover that God doesn’t expect us to navigate life alone. He invites us to ask Him for wisdom, and He promises to give it generously, without shame or condemnation. We’ll also discover the difference between living by principles and living by preferences. Principles are rooted in God’s unchanging Word. Preferences are driven by our changing feelings. Mature faith doesn’t ask God to rewrite His truth for our situation. It asks Him how to faithfully live out the truth He’s already revealed. “You don’t need all the answers. You need access to the One who does.” James 1:5 Discussion topics Icebreaker:What’s one of the funniest or worst decisions you’ve ever made? (Keep it light… wrong turn on vacation, bad haircut, impulse purchase, terrible first car, etc.) HEAD – What did Jesus say to you through the Word? Read James 1:5-8 together. James tells us that if we lack wisdom, we should ask God. According to Sunday’s message, how is wisdom different from simply having knowledge? The sermon made a distinction between principles and preferences.  How would you explain the difference in your own words? Why do you think James follows the promise of wisdom (v.5) with a warning about being double-minded (vv.6-8)? What connection do you see? HEART – How did it make you feel? When you’re facing a difficult decision which one are you naturally more tempted to follow? God’s principles? Your feelings? Other people’s opinions? Whatever seems easiest? Why? Is there an area of your life where God has already made His will clear through Scripture, but you’ve been hoping for a different answer?  Remember that in the sermon on Sunday Pastor David said, “Immature people make decisions based on preferences. Mature people make decisions based on principles.” Where do you see yourself growing in this area? HANDS – What are you going to do with it? Which area of life do you most need God’s wisdom in right now? Money Parenting Marriage Friendships Work Purity Time Something else? Is there one decision you’ve been delaying because you’ve been waiting for more clarity, when God may simply be asking you to obey what He’s already revealed? Pastor Eric highlights three points from the text: 1) Expect trials. 2) Know what God is producing: Steadfastness. 3) Trust God's refining process.

They emphasize the importance of understanding one’s identity beyond roles and societal expectations, particularly during life transitions. Key Insights Identity Exploration: The fundamental question of “Who am I?” is central to personal growth. Identity is not static; it evolves through life experiences and transitions, such as changes in church callings or family dynamics. Deeper Understanding: True identity goes beyond titles like “mother” or “bishop.” It involves understanding personal values, beliefs, and what makes each individual unique. Belonging vs. Fitting In: There is a distinction between belonging (sharing core beliefs) and fitting in (conforming to external expectations). Leaders should encourage individuality within the community to enhance unity. Risk and Growth: Personal growth often requires taking risks and stepping outside comfort zones. Experiences, such as retreats, can facilitate deeper understanding and wisdom. Mature vs. Immature Identity: Immature identity relies on external validation, while mature identity is anchored in self-awareness and allows for flexibility and growth. Leadership Applications Encourage Individuality: Leaders can foster an environment where members feel safe to express their unique identities, which can enhance community strength and diversity. Facilitate Experiences: Organizing smaller group discussions or experiential learning opportunities can help members explore their identities and support each other through personal challenges. Model Vulnerability: Leaders should be open about their own identity journeys, demonstrating that it is acceptable to question and explore one’s faith and personal growth, thereby creating a culture of openness and support. 00:05:07 – The Concept of Identity 00:06:40 – Exploring Identity Beyond Roles 00:08:07 – The Depth of Identity in the Gospel 00:09:32 – The Paradox of Identity and Individuality 00:10:29 – Navigating Group Identity vs. Individual Identity 00:12:28 – Personal Experiences with Identity 00:15:00 – The Downings’ Journey into Identity Work 00:18:01 – The Importance of Self-Discovery 00:20:40 – The Role of Experience in Identity Formation 00:24:40 – The Balance of Self and God's Expectations 00:26:41 – Mature vs. Immature Identity 00:30:12 – The Role of Risk in Growth 00:32:15 – Experiential Learning and Retreats 00:34:22 – The Need for Community in Personal Growth 00:36:47 – The Importance of Anchors in Identity 00:39:14 – Embracing the Journey of Identity The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints’ mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead. In this episode of The Fall Podcast, Arron sits down with Brett for a deep conversation about whitetail hunting strategy, chasing mature bucks, simplifying the hunt, personal growth, and finding more purpose in the outdoors. Brett breaks down his decision to scale back his 2026 hunting season and focus on Ohio whitetail hunting and Illinois whitetail hunting after years of trying to manage multiple states, tags, leases, and opportunities. The guys discuss how the modern hunting culture of chasing more states, more tags, and more success can sometimes take away from the reason we started hunting in the first place. A major topic of the conversation is eliminating friction — removing unnecessary obstacles that keep you from enjoying the process. Arron and Brett discuss how this applies to everything from filming hunts and creating outdoor content to whitetail scouting, deer hunting preparation, and in-season decision making. Brett shares lessons learned from years of chasing deer across different states, including why he believes focusing on fewer properties and putting more intentional effort into each hunt will lead to better experiences and better opportunities at mature bucks. The guys also dive into Brett's career in construction and development management, the frustrations that come with company growth, and the challenge of staying motivated when work becomes more about processes and reporting than solving problems. This episode goes beyond hunting as Arron and Brett talk about taking risks early in life, pursuing passions before responsibilities pile up, and setting the right example for their kids by continuing to challenge themselves. Brett also shares his journey through 75 Hard, a 75-day discipline challenge focused on fitness, mindset, nutrition, and personal development. They discuss building habits, overcoming discomfort, and getting back on track when life feels out of alignment. Topics Covered: 2026 whitetail hunting plans and focusing on Ohio and Illinois Deer hunting strategy and simplifying the process Mature buck hunting and eliminating unnecessary pressure The downside of chasing too many states and too many tags How to reduce friction in hunting and outdoor content creation Whitetail scouting, wind, entry routes, and preparation Balancing hunting, career, family, and personal goals Taking risks before life becomes complicated 75 Hard challenge, fitness, discipline, and personal growth Lessons learned from years of chasing deer across the country If you're a whitetail hunter, deer hunter, bowhunter, public land hunter, or someone looking to improve your hunting mindset, this episode will challenge you to simplify the process and focus on what truly matters. Listen to The Fall Podcast for more conversations about whitetail deer hunting, hunting strategy, outdoor lifestyle, conservation, and the stories behind the pursuit.  . . .
