Haunted American History

Forget cozy Coca-Cola Santas, this is the original dark side of Christmas. In this episode, we dive into the terrifying folklore of Krampus, the horned Christmas demon of the Alps who beats bad children with birch rods, stuffs them in sacks, and drags them off into the winter night. We trace his roots back to the brutal midwinter Rauhnächte, the terrifying goddess Perchta and her Perchten, and the way the Church shackled these pagan spirits to Saint Nicholas to create the ultimate good cop / bad cop duo.hauntedamericanhistory.comPatreon- https://www.patreon.com/hauntedamericanhistoryLINKS FOR MY DEBUT NOVEL, THE FORGOTTEN BOROUGHBarnes and Noble -   https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-forgotten-borough-christopher-feinstein/1148274794?ean=9798319693334AMAZON: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FQPQD68SEbookGOOGLE: https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=S5WCEQAAQBAJ&pli=1KOBO: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-forgotten-borough-2?sId=a10cf8af-5fbd-475e-97c4-76966ec87994&ssId=DX3jihH_5_2bUeP1xoje_SMASHWORD: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/1853316 !! Terrifying & True returns with dark Christmas horror rooted in real Alpine folklore and chilling winter horror stories. Long before cozy Hallmark snowfalls, families in the high Alps spent the Twelve Nights of Christmas fearing a “Christmas Witch” who might reward your hard work… or split you open and stuff you with straw if you broke her rules. This is the terrifying legend of Frau Perchta and her horned horde, the Perchten – where festive lights, fasting days, and spinning wheels turn into a deadly checklist for survival.  In this holiday special, we dive into the eerie, mature side of winter tradition, where spooky stories, urban legends, and brutal morality tales kept entire villages in line through the darkest nights of the year. If you crave Christmas horror that feels older and sharper than anything under the tree, this is your episode.Inside this episode:The rules of the Christmas Witch: Why Alpine families raced to finish their spinning, scrub their homes, and eat a strict Twelfth Night meal before Epiphany, terrified that one broken tradition could invite Perchta's knife.Belly-Slitter punishments straight out of horror stories: From trampled weaving to the infamous eviscerations stuffed with straw and stones, we unpack how this gruesome myth drove real-world discipline in a brutal winter landscape. From Bright Goddess to winter monster: How a once-benevolent “Bright One” and Lady of Epiphany was demonized by the Church into a sinister Christmas hag, complete with goose-foot, ragged robes, and a curse-laden black cloth.Wild Hunts and haunted Alpine nights: The chilling tales of Perchta's ghostly procession screaming across the winter sky, dragging lost souls and unbaptized children in her wake, and why villagers locked doors and clutched charms when the wind howled. The Perchten, Krampus, and other holiday terrors: Meet the beautiful and ugly Perchten, see how they inspired modern Krampus runs, and compare them to figures like Belsnickel and Père Fouettard in a full-blown Christmas rogues' gallery.Living traditions in the spooky season: How today's Perchtenläufe—massive parades of horned masks, cowbells, and towering headdresses—keep this eerie anthology of winter legends alive in the mountains, blending folk horror with festival fun. This episode is perfect for listeners who love folklore, chilling stories, and mature themes that turn cozy Christmas nostalgia into something far more eerie, scary, and unforgettable. When the holidays get too sweet, remember: in some places, kids didn't just fear coal in their stocking—they feared Frau Perchta at the door. We're telling that story tonight.

The idea was kicked around a lot between the two of us until it seemed imperative that we actually write this episode. And thus, an episode was born. In this episode, Alaric is about six years old. He doesn't exactly understand that his life is hanging by a knife's edge – caught between the invading Huns and the colonizing Romans. This is the story of a little boy just trying to do the right thing and not get his belly slit open by the Perchta, as one does around this time of year. It's that time of year again: frantic last minute shopping, swearing at rolls of Sellotape, covering fir trees with bling....and the dragons emerge with a festive folkloric offering that adds a bit of shadow to the season.   This year Jules and Madeleine take a look at the strange relationship between Christmas and witchcraft. If that sounds implausible, stick around - there is a bizarre logic behind it. As with many folkloric traditions, the Christmas witch goes back centuries but some of the modern iterations bring a new level of horror to the tradition. We remember Father Christmas but forget Perchta. We tell stories about St Nicholas but forget St Lucy and her alter Ego, Bloody Lucy. And just who led the wild hunts during Saturnalia and later the twelve days of Christmas? Find out in a special festive episode.   Title music: Ecstasy by Smiling Cynic

It's also the season most associated with snow and ice. For this year's 104 series, we're delving into elemental magic, and what better way to start with snow and ice magic! While technically a subset of water magic, snow and ice have unique properties and spells that make the great to add to your spell repertoire. Each Christmas season, the mountain peoples of Europe are beset by monsters. Fearsome figures like Krampus, Perchta, and the Kuker descend into quaint hilltop villages, sometimes to spread holiday cheer, sometimes to hasten the coming of spring, and sometimes just to sew chaos and discord. These figures are all part of similar winter celebrations found across the Alps, stretching from their western foothills in France all the way to the Dinaric Alps of the Balkans. Due to the primal nature of these traditions, in which men and women wear the skins of beasts and the faces of demons, scholars and churchmen have wondered for decades if these Christmas festivals could really be a remnant of much older traditions. On this week's episode of Gladio Free Europe, Liam and Russian Sam explore the history of these Christmastime monsters, and the widespread traditions of people wearing their costumes to parade through the streets. While drawing a straight from Krampus to ancient Alpine paganism is not particularly easy, some of these figures offer interesting parallels to what we know of the traditional pantheons that Christianity supplanted. Historians today are much hesitant to attribute modern beliefs to paganism than they might have been in the time of the Brothers Grimm. But it's clear that these traditions are among the oldest in Europe, with interesting to the development of witchcraft lore and even the spread of deadly witch hunts across medieval and Early Modern Europe. Join us on a trip to the snowy highlands of Austria, Germany, Slovenia, and Bulgaria and decide for yourself if these winter monsters may be our last remnant of the pagan world.

In this episode, we delve into the winter solstice season, exploring its ghostly nature and the profound duality it embodies—the delicate equilibrium between darkness and light, endings and beginnings. We unravel some common themes interwoven in winter ghost stories and myths. Our focus though, is on the chilling Alpine winter spirit, Perchta, and her eerie companions, the Perchten, who add a spine-tingling dimension to the season. In this January almanac episode, I share about how English Plough Sunday and Plough Monday rituals dovetail with pagan midwinter worship of Odin to present a quandary as rich today as ever: How do we hold sacred the human capacity to employ technologies that multiply our power, while dancing on the delicate balance between service and domination? How do we bless the hard work of human hands where it meets the life of the world? This episode delves into traditions of chasing out the spirits of Yule, as well as blessing of apple trees, ploughs, and ultimately ploughboys as representatives of the overflow of human passion and physical power. This month I'll be focusing on the new cycle of years changing over the end of the Yule season and our relationship to labour and technology, which was a focus that arose for me while I was researching this January episode. That hasn't arisen for me before, but it definitely is an emphasis of English and Nordic tradition, and it'll explain more as we go ahead. Other themes that arise in January folklore are the continued divination and predictive quality for the year ahead that we've may have already seen in December. Folklore also the supernatural and the feminine visiting from the wilds beyond, because it is still winter and these forces still rule. There's often a theme in January songs especially of weather, bad weather, loneliness, cold and love, longing as metaphorically associated with those sensations of coldness and isolation in the wintertime. And of course, the slow return of the sun is being observed across European folklore, which is what I always focus on.

It surveys November droving and pannage traditions, Guy Fawkes Day on November 5th, fox hunting and its complex legacy, St. Martins day on November 11 and its entanglement with goose lore, and St. Catherine's day on November 25th, which opens the season of the Germanic winter goddesses, whose later folklore connects spinning and wheels, snow, wild animals, flying, geese, and children. Did you know that many of the attributes Santa Claus actually come from a beloved winter witch?  The giving gifts in a stocking if you're good, leaving you a lump of coal if you're bad, and the whole sliding down the chimney to do so schtick? Yeah, that's all plucked straight from the mythology one of our winter witches.  But be forewarned…not all of our witches are good: some are frightening cannibals or violent hags that embody the ruthless spirit of winter itself.  But history suggests that these witches were not always haggard old crones or even witches at all, but instead were once beautiful goddesses.  Today we'll be looking at these winter witches, investigating their origins beyond superficial blog posts, and seeing how Christianity managed to turn divine goddesses into hook-nosed old crones who will rip our your organs.
