Skip the banter: 00:05:12 (give or take 30 seconds depending on ads) Christian Andreacchio was found dead in his apartment shortly after leaving his towboat job, with police ruling it a suicide following a 45-minute investigation. His family disagrees, pointing to gunshot residue on others, a cleaned bathroom, and a handgun with no fingerprints. Years later, they're still pushing for a proper investigation into what they believe was a staged scene and a covered-up murder. Petition: click here Support us and become a Patron! The ePOP video competition is open! The ePOP video competition is sponsored by the RFI department “Planète Radio”, whose mission is to give a voice to the voiceless. ePOP focuses on the environment and how climate change has affected “ordinary” people. The ePOP contest is your space to ensure these voices are heard. How do you do it? With a three-minute ePOP video. It should be pure testimony, captured by your lens: the spoken word reigns supreme. No tricks, no music, no text on the screen. Just the raw authenticity of an encounter, in horizontal format (16:9). An ePOP film is a razor-sharp look at humanity that challenges, moves, and enlightens. From June 12 to September 12, 2025, ePOP invites you to reach out, open your eyes, and create that unique bridge between a person and the world. Join the ePOP community and make reality vibrate! Remember to copy me (thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr) when you write to her so that I know what is going on, too. N.B.: You do not need to send her your quiz answers! Email overload! This week's quiz: On 28 June, I asked you a question about an article written earlier that week by RFI English journalist Alison Hird. She profiled Miguel Masaisai, a young athlete from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) who's riding his bike across several countries in Africa. Masaisai has a message: peace. You were to re-read Alison's article “From Goma to Cape Town, the young Congolese athlete pedalling for peace”, and send in the answers to these two questions: At the time of publication, which countries had Masaisai cycled across, and which countries are still ahead of him? The answers are: At the time of publication, Masaisai had ridden across the DRC, Zambia, Rwanda, and Tanzania; ahead of him were Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. Since publication, Masaisai has pedaled through Botswana and is in South Africa. Bravo Masaisai! In addition to the quiz question, there was the bonus question, suggested by Liton Hossain Khondaker from Naogaon, Bangladesh: What is your favorite festival, religious or otherwise? Do you have a bonus question idea? Send it to thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr The winners are: RFI Listeners Club member Helmut Matt from Herbolzheim, Germany, who is also the winner of this week's bonus question. Last but not least, there's Sadman Al Shihab, the co-chairman of the Source of Knowledge Club in Naogaon, Bangladesh. Congratulations, winners! Here's the music you heard on this week's programme: “Cuckoo” from The Birds by Ottorino Respighi, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Istvan Kertesz; an anonymous cycling playlist; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “The Cakewalk” from Children's Corner by Claude Debussy, performed by the composer, and traditional music from the Kaiabi indigenous people of Brazil, recorded in 1954 by Edward M. Weyer Jr. Do you have a music request? Send it to thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr This week's question ... you must listen to the show to participate. There's growing calls for politicians and their families to give up private healthcare when making decisions for the country. These sources collectively explore the multifaceted nature of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which protects fundamental freedoms including speech, religion, press, assembly, and petition. They differentiate between fully protected, less protected, and unprotected categories of speech, with particular emphasis on incitement to imminent lawless action as defined by Brandenburg v. Ohio and the protection extended to offensive public discourse in Snyder v. Phelps. The texts also examine the historical evolution and current challenges facing press freedom in the digital age, suggesting a potential need to distinguish the press clause from the speech clause for the sake of professional journalism's viability. Finally, they highlight the often-overlooked right to petition, detailing its historical significance as a direct means of government redress for citizens, including marginalized groups, and its diminished role today compared to its robust past. The five distinct freedoms protected by the First Amendment are speech, religion, press, assembly, and petition. These rights form the foundation of American democratic society by limiting government interference in personal expression and political engagement.Protected speech includes political discourse and symbolic expression, safeguarding unpopular or dissenting views, and is generally immune from government censorship. Unprotected speech, however, falls into narrow categories like true threats or obscenity, where the speech directly causes substantial, socially unacceptable harm and can be punished.Clarence Brandenburg was convicted for advocating violence under Ohio's criminal syndicalism statute. This statute broadly prohibited the mere advocacy of violence as a means of political reform, which the Supreme Court found unconstitutional. The three elements of the "imminent lawless action" test are: the speech must be directed to inciting lawless action, the lawless action must be imminent, and the speech must be likely to incite or produce such action. All three must be met for speech to lose its First Amendment protection.Brandenburg v. Ohio replaced the "bad tendency" test (from Whitney v. California) and effectively overturned the "abstract advocacy" standard (from Dennis v. United States). It shifted the focus to speech that directly incites immediate and likely unlawful action, protecting mere advocacy of violence.Justice Douglas's "absolutist" position argued that the phrase "no law" in the First Amendment should be interpreted very literally, meaning nearly all speech should be immune from prosecution regardless of governmental interests. He believed the "clear and present danger" test had been misused to suppress legitimate First Amendment claims.A "content-based" regulation restricts speech based on its message or subject matter and is subject to strict scrutiny. A "content-neutral" regulation, conversely, regulates the time, place, or manner of speech, regardless of its content, and is subject to intermediate scrutiny.Prior restraint is an administrative system that prevents speech from occurring before it is published or expressed. It is highly disfavored because the Supreme Court views it as the "most serious and least tolerable infringement" of First Amendment rights, carrying a heavy burden for the government to justify.Historically, the right to petition allowed individuals to formally file grievances with Congress for review and response, often leading to investigation or hearings. Today, online petitions often lack this formal process; they are frequently political theater and typically do not receive official congressional review or response. An example of symbolic speech protected by the First Amendment is burning the American flag, as ruled in Texas v. Johnson. This act, though offensive to many, was recognized as a constitutionally protected form of conveying a political message.

Dani Pinter (Senior Vice President at the NCOSE Law Center) and Haley McNamara (Senior Vice President at NCOSE) react to the latest update to Grok which include chatbot avatars that can act as your companion – even as a romantic connection. “Ani” is depicted as a very young anime girl who is programmed to be “crazy in love” with the user and can have progressively more sexually explicit interactions as the user advances through the conversation. This even includes getting the bot to describe itself as a young child or to play along with sexual fantasies with a child-like motif. All of this is available before activating “spicy mode.” This is obviously quite disturbing for a number of reasons, but even more upsetting is the access that kids have to this tool with no meaningful age verification in place to protect minors. Also, the Apple App Store has assigned this app as appropriate for ages 12 and up. When life feels unbearably heavy—from natural disasters to personal heartbreak—what can we even say? The Bible doesn't ignore suffering or gloss over pain. Instead, it gives voice to our sorrow. Psalm 13 offers us a path from weeping to worship, showing how honest lament can lead to deep trust in a faithful God.OutlineI. TurnII. ComplainIII. PetitionIV. Trusting PraiseSermon Discussion Questions1) When suffering strikes, where do you instinctively turn first? What are some reasons you don't turn to the Lord first?2) If you were to present some complaints to the Lord right now, what would be some of those complaints? 3) Are your prayers boldly asking God to act according to His promises? Why or why not? How specific are your requests? 4) How does suffering with the end in view change how you approach suffering? What about lament leads to trust and praise? How would this reshape your perspective?5) Read Psalm 6 and look for the different elements of lament (Turn, complain, petition, and trusting praise). Write your own lament prayer and share it with someone you trust.

While most of the U.S. was celebrating the 4th of July holiday, President Donald Trump was busy signing the One Big, Beautiful Bill into law. This wide-ranging tax law has a few implications for the biopharma industry, including expanded IRA exemptions for orphan drugs. Looking ahead to the second half of 2025, BioSpace reviews some of the upcoming catalysts highlighted by Jefferies' “Halftime Show” report, including a highly anticipated Phase III readout for Eli Lilly's oral obesity candidate orforglipron and an eye on rare disease decisions under the “new” FDA. Speaking of FDA decisions, this week kicked off with a surprise approval—that of KalVista's Pharmaceuticals' Ekterly for hereditary angioedema. The road to approval for Ekterly was not a smooth one, after the FDA delayed its target action date and Endpoints News reported that FDA Commissioner Marty Makary tried to have the application rejected. More regulatory controversy is afoot as Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is facing yet another lawsuit. A group of medical organizations have sued Kennedy and other health leaders in an attempt to reverse Kennedy's recent decision to remove COVID-19 shots from the routine immunization guidelines for healthy children and healthy pregnant women. In other vaccine news, Kennedy endorsed the expanded use of RSV vaccines for people 50 through 59 years old who are at risk of severe disease—following the recommendation of the CDC vaccine advisory committee he turfed last month. This seeming reversal of sentiment largely mirrors the Secretary's massive HHS overhaul, which has already seen several of these layoffs reversed. In ClinicaSpace this week, we take a deep dive into the numbers. Also in ClinicaSpace, we feature four therapies hanging tough in a troubled TIGIT space that has seen several companies burn billions of dollars on failed assets. And BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics is back in the news after signaling support for a Citizens' Petition submitted to the FDA requesting the approval of its cell therapy NurOwn, whose Biologics License Application was withdrawn in 2023. Finally, in BioPharm Executive, we take a deep dive into the burgeoning longevity space and unpack the short-lived marriage between Novo Nordisk and Hims & Hers Health.

Hannah Diviney made history in 2022 when she became the first person with a disability to film a sex scene for Australian television. Then she went viral when she confronted both Lizzo and Beyonce over an ableist slur in their song lyrics. When Hannah was growing up, the only people she saw on TV who used a wheelchair like her were Paralympians or in Road Safety ads.Hannah spent a lot of her childhood feeling lonely and left out, though she was sure she wanted to be a writer when she grew up.She was still at pre-school when she realised that names on the front of books belonged to the people who had written them.It was also around this time when Hannah became aware that her body didn't work in the same way as her friends at childcare.Hannah has since started the Krazy Kosci Klimb, which supports young people with Cerebral Palsy to climb Australia's highest peak.Hannah always knew representation was important for young, disabled people like her to be reflected in pop culture and to belong. So she wrote to Disney, requesting they create their first princess who uses a wheelchair. That petition secured Hannah's first job in journalism with Mamamia — at the age of 15.She has since made history, becoming the first person with a disability to film a sex scene for Australian television.in 2022, Hannah went unexpectedly viral for confronting musician Lizzo about an ableist slur in her song lyrics.Several weeks later, Beyonce used the same slur, and Hannah realised she had to take on the biggest pop star in the world.Further informationHannah's collection of autobiographical essays, I'll Let Myself In is published by Allen & Unwin. This episode was produced by Alice Moldovan.Conversations' Executive Producer is Nicola Harrison.Find out more about the Conversations Live National Tour on the ABC website.
Vaginal estrogen is not the enemy. Outdated data is. In this crossover episode of the BackTable Urology and OBGYN podcasts, Dr. Suzette Sutherland and Dr. Yahir Santiago-Lastra delve into the persistent challenges and ongoing advocacy efforts surrounding the FDA's black box warning on vaginal estrogen. --- SYNPOSIS They explore the historical context and far-reaching influence of the 1990s Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study, asserting that its misinterpretation continues to shape misconceptions and hinder effective menopause care. The discussion highlights recent data refuting the risks associated with vaginal estrogen therapies and underscores the urgent need for updated, evidence-based guidelines to support women throughout menopause. Dr. Santiago-Lastra also draws attention to gender-based inequities in hormone treatment, the robust evidence contradicting the current black box warning, and the multi-faceted advocacy required to bring about change. This episode is part of a broader series focused on various aspects of menopause. --- TIMESTAMPS 00:00 - Introduction02:01 - Menopause Series Overview03:55 - History of the Black Box Warning on Estrogen07:26 - Understanding the Black Box Warning12:11 - The Citizen's Petition and FDA Process18:11 - Gender Inequity in Medical Treatment22:45 - Factors Resulting in Gender Inequity29:02 - Genital Urinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM)29:32 - Benefits of Vaginal Estrogen33:33 - Legislative Advocacy and Medicare34:43 - Professional and Patient Advocacy36:35 - Challenges and Progress in Label Change43:35 - Historical Context and Gender Equity45:07 - Recap and Future Directions
