‘Micro cheating' is the new trend online, and everyone's got a hot take on what it looks like. So what do you consider ‘micro cheating'? And is it worth ending a relationship over?DM us your thoughts, questions, topics, or to just vent at @triplejthehookup on IG or email us: thehookup@abc.net.auThe Hook Up is an ABC podcast, produced by triple j. It is recorded on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. We pay our respects to elders past and present. We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians and Traditional Custodians of the land where we live, work, and learn.
We start with some observations (ok, rants) about the press conference on the recent aircraft collision in D.C., the hearings to confirm RFK Jr. as Secretary of Health and Human Services, and the silencing of vital science and health institutions. Then we talk to eminent psychologist Stuart Vyse about his career and a handful of pop psychology topics. He weighs in on the Telepathy Tapes podcast and facilitated communication, the notorious Milgram experiment, and why baseball is rife with luck rituals. What is luck? It's an ever-present paranormal concept that most people don't associate with the paranormal at all. Because we humans are terrible at judging randomness, we ascribe all sorts of things to luck -- whether it's a person being "lucky" their whole lives, or a lucky seat at a poker table, or a flowing luck field that comes and goes... in other words, the way normal variation works.
Hello Friends! We're moving into the land down under this month on the show, with a look at the fantastic 2nd LP from Australia's own The Twilight, Once Upon a Twilight. Issued in 1968 in mono and stereo exclusively in Oz, the album has since been reissued on CD, including a Mono/Stereo issue by Aztec. Sadly, this uses a fold-down of the stereo for the mono presentation, while the original LP is wonderfully a dedicated mono affair, complete with drier vocals, and some wildly different use of effects throughout this very 'studio' production. This is a wonderful piece of late 60s Pop-Psych, and if you're a fan of The Beatles' 1967 efforts, or The Hollies' Butterfly, you'll love this album. Not convinced? What a silly thing to do! In this episode we dive into one of Pop-Psych's favourite topics; the Left Brain vs Right Brain dominance theory. The concept will be discussed in a two-part series. This first instalment sets out to answer the following: > Does the theory hold a degree of validity?> What are the implications for cognition, behaviour and personality?> How does being left or right brain-dominant explain the development of mental illness and distress? The second part of the series will evaluate the implications of being left or right brain-dominant when engaging with different types of therapies available in Psychology. To contact me follow on Instagram @elliot.t.waters

Pop Psych 101 Poppsych101.com Mike hails from Kansas City, Missouri; Kansas City is in Missouri, not Kansas, for the confused reading this. CHIEFS! Living in KC is a bit of luck on Mike’s side–being right in the middle of the USA is super useful for someone who’s terrified to fly. North, West, East or South, nothing is further than 27 hours drive. Doable. Husband and Dad life are number 1. Talk show Host? Stay at home Dad. Pretty nice guy. Average height. Handsome sometimes. Driven by a primal urge to create and entertain. That primal urge is called Bipolar Disorder. It’s actually super useful. Goal Oriented like crazy. #1 creative and entertainment goal? Teaching people about Mental Health. It’s fascinating if you just listen for minute or two Mike is working to spread awareness and bust the stigma of mental health issues. He wants to normalize it so that at some point we can speak about it the same way we would talk about a broken leg. He’s been a creative person his entire life and began adding to his portfolio when he was 13 years old. He now works from the speed of pedal-to-the-medal to huge downswings where it’s difficult to get up or do anything. His wife is always there to encourage him and so is his sister, but there are also times when he needs to give in to the disease and tuck away in the quiet. Mike and his podcast co-host, Ryan, a therapist, explore the topic of mental health through movies and shows. They share ideas and reviews in an entertaining way and joke that their show has one therapist, one advocate and 2 perspectives.
The wait is over! Well, we're still waiting for "Avengers: Endgame," but in the meantime -- the boys treated themselves to "Captain Marvel." Or was it a treat? Take a listen to find out. Also appearing are a de-aged Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg as Nick Fury & Agent Coulson (respectively). Also starring Jude Law, Gemma Chan, Annette Bening and a slew of others, this film wets the whistle for the next entry in the Marvel series. Ryan and Mike pause a moment to acknowledge that they are in fact straight white males, and being so, have a limited and possibly narrow perspective on this particular subject. They hope their perspectives as a Therapist and a mental health advocate can offer something to the conversation. Inspired by this raw and real performance by Hannah Gadsby, Ryan and Mike look at the theme of identity; who we see ourselves as--and are we ok with how others see us? The other theme that strikes them is shame as a result of our feeling of identity. Hannah, gives us a first hand, and very real view into these themes, and like all the issues and themes on Pop Psych 101 they need understanding. Ryan, offers up some embarrassing moments from his childhood that helped shape him into the man he grew to be. Mike talk about goobers. Synopsis: In the 2018 Netflix comedy special Nanette, comedian Hannah Gadsby starts out her set with fairly standard jokes about coming out as a lesbian and what it was like for her growing up in Tasmania. She shares important lessons we can learn from art history and whether or not creativity means you must suffer. Over the course of her special however, she begins to acknowledge that these self deprecating jokes are insufficient in letting her tell and fully take care of her story. She shares the stark reality of what it was like for her in coming out and how she was treated and ultimately abused several times over the course of her life, just for being herself. In a slight departure from the norm of One Broken Mom, Ameé brings on therapist and fellow podcaster, Ryan Englestead from the show Pop Psych 101. By day, he’s a clinical psychologist in New Jersey. By night, he’s part of a dynamic duo of podcasters who do a show called Pop Psych 101. A show that dives into the mental wellness (or illness) of characters you know, love and maybe hate on TV, in movies and books. In this episode, Ameé and Ryan talk about the portrayal of characters in movies and TV shows and where writers get the mental wellness "right" and where it's dangerously wrong. But, in the end, they team up to save the day and talk about how movies and television can be used to find relatable ways to discuss mental wellness and concerns such as depression, anxiety and suicide between ourselves and perhaps with our own children. Other topics in the show include: Have you ever noted any dangerous or untrue messages being put out in movies or television shows? So what do you think it means when people like certain types of movies – action, spy movies, horror or Rom-Com’s? Do you think there is value in using movies & TV shows as a way to help our kids learn empathy? What if our kids have an interest in darker themes, especially adolescents - Should we worry? How can superhero movies or stories help some people as they are dealing with adversity in their personal lives. Finally, Ameé and Ryan break down some of the main characters of Marvel's Avengers and over-analyze it all! Hi, thanks for downloading! I’ve been doing fairly well this week. A couple issues with anxiety, but that’s nothing new. It is the first time it’s happened in a little while, though. I’m not sure what that means – I’ve been taking my medication just as I have been, I don’t think any more stress is in my life over … Continue reading "Mike and Ryan from Pop Psych 101"

Eating disorders--a subject that hits close to home for Pop Psych 101. Mike, gives a little background to his personal experience with an eating disorder, while Ryan explains that sometimes these symptoms can pair with mood disorders as a way for a person to gain some control where they might feel as if they have none. Ryan and Mike go deep into "To The Bone", a Netflix special, starring Lily Collins, based on true events surrounding a battle with Anorexia. To The Bone, is as intense a look into treatment as any pop culture they've looked at to date, even if the ending is a little too packaged for Ryan's taste. Ryan and Mike answer listener questions about bulimia, binge eating disorder, and go over what an anorexic person would look like in real life, as far as symptoms. An exciting day for Pop Psych 101. We have our first guest-host, Christine, EMT turned Nurse Practitioner, and Host of the popular Podcast, Antidotes: Stories In Medicine, is joining us to talk about one of the great films in movie history, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. With insight from Christine and Ryan, we breakdown the myths surrounding Psychiatric Hospitalization, and actually give RP Murphy, a diagnosis fitting for real life; Anti Social Personality Disorder. Mental Health and Mental Health hospitals are important topics for a film like this to get right. There are a lot of accurate portrayals in this film, but one that we decide is just not based in reality, is the portrayal of Nurse Ratched. Mike remains fascinated. Every Monday, Therapist Ryan Engelstad, and Producer Mike Graham, take an example from Pop Culture (i.e. Books, Movies, TV Shows) that features a Mental Health problem, and determine if the portrayal is accurate and something we can use as an example for those with questions or even curiosity, or if the depiction of the issue is exaggerated and just for entertainment. Lars, played by actor, Ryan Gosling, has an obvious mental health issue in this movie, and Ryan (Engelstad, not Gosling) thinks it shows signs of Schizoid Personality Disorder. Personality disorders are complicated in that, the person with the disorder, is usually unaware. In "Lars and the Real Girl", Lars believes that a full-sized, plastic doll is a real person, and his girlfriend. Mike has a lot of questions as to the reality of Lars' delusion and how his family, and the community around him, reacts. Ryan and Mike talk a lot about finding support, and how people would actually react to this in real life. Also, they give us a bit about their backgrounds and how they met, and Mike lets the world know, that he is a sufferer of Mental Illness himself; a person diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder. Mike believes things are getting much easier as far as public opinion of Mental Health is concerned, but knows there is a lot of work to do, yet. It's Mental Health Awareness Week, and the goal of Pop Psych 101, is to aid in the conversation and help normalize it's discussion. As usual, to end the Episode, Ryan rates the portrayal of the Mental Health issue at hand on a scale of 1 to 5, using "Real Girls" as his rating system, this time. Mike rates the movie, as a movie, on a scale of 1 to 5 stars. Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog! Ryan always had a Blog! We all love that feeling of happiness, and more often than not, we don't want that feeling to stop. Using the feel-good hit from Justin Timberlake 'CAN'T STOP THE FEELING!', we dive into the deep questions about happiness and how we might be able to find more of it. To help us out, we're joined this week by happiness expert Dr Tim Sharp (aka Dr Happy) who has some surprising answers on what happiness actually is, and why it's perhaps a little unrealistic to never expect this feeling to stop. This is the first out of four episodes about the UK underground psych and prog. In this first episode we are focusing on the early psychedelia scene in 1967-68. As with the pop cultural development in the US, psychedelia really becomes big in the UK around 1966-67 and many of the R&B and beat band would be turned on by psychedelia and completely transform their style during this period of time. The early British psychedelia is usually very pop oriented with strong emphasis on melodies but would soon develop into more heavy psych and progressive with more complex song structures, as we will hear in later episodes. This is the beginning of a whole range of styles that would be dominating the rock music in the 70s.
