Most of us believe more options equals better outcomes. Research says no. In much of life, the opposite is true, and the gap between what we believe and what the data shows is one of the more quietly consequential misconceptions shaping how we live right now.David Epstein is the author of Range and the new book Inside the Box, both New York Times bestsellers. He spent years studying human performance and creativity, and this conversation picks up where Range left off. If Range was about why broad exploration matters early in life, Inside the Box is about what you actually do once you have all that range. The answer turns out to be counterintuitive: you box yourself in.In this conversation, you'll discover:Why people with more options to watch are consistently more bored than people with fewer, and what that reveals about how your brain actually works The difference between satisficing and maximizing, and why maximizers make worse decisions, feel more regret, and are less happy with their lives despite spending more time and energy on every choice How Keith Jarrett recorded the best-selling solo jazz piano album of all time on a broken, out-of-tune instrument he almost refused to play, and what that says about where creative breakthroughs actually come from The paired constraints process used by Monet, Dr. Seuss, and Isabel Allende, and how you can use the same structure to unstick your own creative projects Why our attention switches tasks every 45 seconds on average now, down from every three minutes 25 years ago, and what it's actually costing us in terms of stress, creativity, and the simple experience of loving our workThis is a conversation for anyone who has ever felt scattered across too many possibilities, half-committed to too many things, and quietly wondered if the constraint they've been avoiding might be exactly the thing they need. You can find David at: Website | Instagram | Range Widely Substack | Episode TranscriptNext week, we're sitting down with Donna Jackson Nakazawa to talk about why rumination feels so productive even when it's actively working against you, and what the neuroscience actually says about how to loosen its grip. She has a framework for this that I haven't been able to stop thinking about since we recorded. David Epstein: Inside the Box David Epstein is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Range and The Sports Gene, both of which have been translated into more than 30 languages. He was previously the host of Slate‘s popular “How To!” podcast and a science and investigative reporter at ProPublica. His TED talks have been viewed more than 12 million times. His newest book is also a New York Times bestseller: Inside the Box: How Constraints Make Us Better (Amazon, Bookshop)*. It seems like we should be the most focused, creative, and innovative when we are the freest to do whatever we want. Turns out, it's pretty much the exact opposite. In this conversation, David and I discuss why constraints make all the difference. Key Points Myth: we are most creative and innovative when we are most free. In fact, it's the opposite. Given complete freedom, we tend to follow the path of least resistance. The Einstellung effect: employing only familiar methods even if better ones are available. General Magic (the most important technology company that nobody's ever heard of) had virtually no constraints and ultimately produced nothing. Write down hypotheses and make commitments visible before you begin. Give people agency in creating constraints. If your organization or team was being handed off to someone else tomorrow, what's the first thing the new leader would change? Consider making that change now. To avoid over-indexing on constraints, ask this question: “Could I still surprise myself?” Resources Mentioned Inside the Box: How Constraints Make Us Better by David Epstein (Amazon, Bookshop)* Interview Notes Download my interview notes in PDF format (free membership required). Rhys Dalton-Morgan joins me from Contact in the Desert for a fascinating conversation about a remarkable family connection to one of Australia's most intriguing UFO cases. Rhys's grandfather, a decorated RAF fighter pilot and later operations head of the vast Woomera Test Range in South Australia, reportedly witnessed a bright disc-shaped object during the era of Black Knight rocket testing. According to Rhys's research, the object was seen over the range by multiple personnel, appeared to circle a missile site, and then accelerated away at extraordinary speed. The case has since led Rhys into a deeper investigation of his grandfather's military background, including a reported early involvement with a secret U.S.-U.K. UFO inquiry. We also discuss Rhys's mother's personal experiences, the role of respected Australian researcher Bill Chalker, the strange history surrounding Woomera, and some of Australia's most compelling cases. Later, Rhys gives an excellent overview of the 1966 Westall school UFO incident, including the witnesses, reported landings, unusual aircraft, alleged military response, and some lesser-known details surrounding the event. We also touch on Australian high strangeness, alleged abduction cases, cryptid reports including the Yowie, and why the UFO phenomenon may be far more complex than simply unexplained technology.SHOW NOTESCONTACT AND SUPPORT

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Military correspondent Emanuel Fabian joins host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. Following an IDF press tour of a Hezbollah underground military base, Fabian describes the massive space created with Iranian planning and funds, used as a staging ground for car-sized UAV drones that can travel the length and width of Israel. Fabian notes that the underground base is similar to what has been found in Iran, missile sites built into a mountain to hold and launch assets, and constructed during the last decade. With Israel and Lebanon slated to start talks in Washington, DC, on Tuesday, Fabian discusses the IDF's positioning in Lebanon and the army's ceasefire limitations from acting against all but the most immediate threats. Several Hamas terrorists in Gaza -- known to have been involved in taking hostages on October 7, 2023 -- were recently targeted and killed by IDF strikes. Fabian reports that while the operations violate the ongoing ceasefire, the IDF claims the terrorists were planning on carrying out strikes on Israeli forces. Compensation professionals are no longer asking whether AI will change their work—they're asking how, where, and how fast. Teams are experimenting with tools like Claude, Copilot, and ChatGPT to help analyze data, draft communications, support pay decisions, and streamline compensation processes. Vendors are rolling out AI features and workflows in their products. At the same time, leaders are navigating legitimate questions about data privacy, governance, accuracy, and trust. Some see AI as the next major transformation in compensation management. Others worry we're moving faster than our ability to validate the outputs these tools produce. The reality is probably somewhere in between. In this episode of Comp and Coffee, Ruth Thomas is joined by Paul Reiman, Founder and Managing Partner at Novo Insights, and Giac Soliman, Founder of Range and former Head of Compensation, to explore how AI is reshaping compensation—and what leaders should do next. Michigan basketball was rocked by the stunning news that national championship-winning head coach Dusty May is leaving for the Dallas Mavericks, creating a massive shakeup across the Big Ten and college basketball landscape. Reports indicate May is headed to Dallas after leading Michigan to the 2026 national title, opening a transfer portal window and leaving uncertainty around one of the conference's top programs. Alex Kyi of Armchair Illini joined the show to break down the ripple effects of May's departure, including how it could impact the Big Ten title race and potentially benefit programs like Illinois Fighting Illini heading into the 2026-27 season. The conversation also focused on former Illini star Keaton Wagler and the latest intel surrounding the 2026 NBA Draft. According to Kyi's reporting, Wagler is expected to land somewhere between picks 5 and 9, with teams such as the Clippers, Nets, Kings, Hawks, and Mavericks all viewed as potential destinations. Kyi discussed why Wagler remains one of the most intriguing lottery prospects, and what his sources are hearing just days before draft night. The hour also examined how May's exit could reshape the national college basketball hierarchy and what it means for Illinois' championship aspirations entering next season.
In this episode of Phoenix Cast, host John mentally travels back to the Marine Corps Communication Electronics School in 29 Palms, the place where the cast was basically born, to talk with Col Arun Shankar, MCCES's commanding officer, and LtCol Steve Morello, who leads Communication Training Battalion. The conversation digs into how the comm community is shifting from being “just plumbers” to owning information management, why how you employ a C2 system now matters as much as the system itself, and the cybersecurity training gaps the schoolhouse is racing to close. John presses them on managing risk, virtualizing hands-on training, and how they're using AI to compress a three-year curriculum cycle down to days. If you claim comm or cyber, lead Marines, or just want to hear how the schoolhouse is modernizing to keep pace with Ukraine-era threats, this homecoming episode is worth the listen. We'd love to hear your thoughts! Three retired loggers, five encounters, and a run of deep timber none of them could ever explain. In this episode of Backwoods Bigfoot Stories I share firsthand Sasquatch accounts I gathered over the better part of two years from three men who spent their working lives cutting timber across the Pacific Northwest and the Mountain West in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s.You'll meet them by first name only, the way they asked, as Earl, Roy, and Hollis, three plainspoken men with no books to sell and every reason to keep quiet, who finally set the weight of what they saw down in front of me.Earl was a young choker setter in the Oregon Coast Range in 1958 when something started emptying the crew's lunch buckets and turning up in head-high brush twenty feet away, and three years later, in 1961, he was pinned in a wall tent on a Cascade lake while a slow, heavy weight walked the gravel behind his head.Roy was a redwood faller in Northern California in 1963 when he looked up a hillside gallery of old-growth and watched a near eight-foot figure lay its hand flat against a trunk and knock twice, and heard two knocks answer from across the canyon. Hollis worked the Idaho panhandle and western Montana, where eyeshine paced his truck on a one-lane logging road in 1971, and a scream came down off the slope above a river camp in 1974 that emptied that camp by first light. I came up a skeptic, and I went looking for the place each story breaks. These three didn't break the way a made-up story breaks. What surfaces in all of it, from men who never met and never compared notes, are the same small, specific things: the dog that walks backward into the tent, the smell that arrives a beat ahead of the sight, the wood knocks answered across open ground, and a thing that watched men work and chose, over and over, to let them walk away. Listen for the details, and decide for yourself what these old men carried out of the woods.Have you experienced a Bigfoot sighting, Sasquatch encounter, Dogman experience, UFO sighting, or any unexplained cryptid or paranormal event deep in the woods? We want to hear your story.Email your encounter to brian@paranormalworldproductions.com for a chance to be featured on a future episode of Backwoods Bigfoot Stories.Backwoods Bigfoot Stories is a paranormal storytelling podcast featuring real Bigfoot encounters, Sasquatch sightings, Dogman reports, cryptid experiences, and true scary stories from the backwoods.Follow the show and turn on automatic downloads so you never miss a chilling encounter from the forest. Dr. Tom Bartlett has spent a lifetime proving that rangeland is worth a lot more than meets the eye. Tip sits down with this Colorado State University rangeland economist to discuss career that shifted from mathematical modeling to applied on-the-ground economics — and why Bartlett thinks the real value of public grazing lands is almost always misunderstood by policymakers. Along the way, they reflect on 60 years of Society for Range Management membership, the people who shaped the profession. Hey Talkhouse listeners, it's Josh Modell. Instead of a new episode this week, we're resurfacing a great one from a few years back between Blondshell and Maya Hawke. Blondshell, aka Sabrina Teitelbaum, released a new song recently and she's about to hit the road for a big tour. Maya Hawke is an actor who just signed on to star in the upcoming Netflix show The God of the Woods and she makes great records as well. Check it out! —Josh Modell, Host of the Talkhouse Podcast On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two performers who've got friends in common, and became fast friends themselves while recording this chat: Maya Hawke and Sabrina Teitelbaum. Maya Hawke is best known for her day job as an actor, most visibly in a little show called Stranger Things, and she was also in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and the new Wes Anderson movie, Asteroid City. But as you'll hear in this chat, she might be most excited by a side path as a singer and songwriter. Hawke has released two understated but fantastic albums so far, and she's basically finished another. The vibe is sort of indie-folk, sort of floating and ambient but lyrically really engaging. She's worked with some cool folks to realize her musical vision, including Christian Lee Hutson, who's the “Christian” referenced in this conversation, just so you know. Check out a “Sweet Tooth” from Hawke's 2022 album Moss right here. Sabrina Teitelbaum just released her debut album under the name Blondshell, and it's one of the best of 2023 so far. She describes it in this conversation as an emergency album—meaning a bunch of songs that she felt almost desperate to write, record, and unleash on the world. It's direct and angry in spots, but also darkly funny and completely unafraid. She's toured with the likes of Horsegirl and Porridge Radio, which might give some indication of what you're in for. Or I could just play you Blondshell's opus, “Salad,” right here. Check it out. These two have a fantastic conversation, and just in case it's not clear from the context, they're both good friends with the singer Samia, and each has contributed to a Samia covers series called Honey Reimagained. Blondshell did a song called “Charm You,” which is available now. Elsewhere in this chat, they talk about Hawke's playing “body air guitar,” the weird emotional hit you get when a tour is finished, and the difficulties of stage banter. Enjoy. 0:00 Intro 3:20: Start of Conversation 3:21: On mutual friends and covering songs 4:58: On “perceived vulnerability” and perspectives in their songwriting 9:08: On sad songs, music you can play for friends, and “Olympus” 10:57: On the writing and jazz experiences that inspired Maya's music 12:48: On the physicality of performing, feeling the music, and performance art 14:41: On playing live, post-tour loneliness, and active vs. passive time 20:06: On maintaining friendships 21:17: On Maya's latest record 22:54: On onstage banter, scripting shows, and keeping shows fresh 25:53: On finishing a record and learning from the experience 27:43: On music serving as a snapshot of an artists' life 28:26: On promoting music creatively and authentically, and social media 33:19: On the songwriting process, and tv show narratives' influences on our experiences 38:40: On being inspired by friendships 42:13: On Maya titling her album “Moss” 43:40: On writing about past pain, and trying to balance it with joy Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Sabrina Teiltelbaum and Maya Hawke for chatting. In this episode of The CEP Mindset Show, Cassidy, Nick, and Adam break down how an athlete can tap into their unconscious mind. The episode covers Nick's broken triangle framework, the difference between standards and expectations, and why Rod Brind'Amour disconnecting himself from his own team's win is the perfect example of autonomy-supportive leadership.
Hi Everyone, Carl Gould here your #70secondCEO, just over a minute of investment per day for a lifetime of results. You want me to ask about the cost of goods? Gross margin? Net margin, right? So, your percentage difference between the two is what we would call your range of mismanagement. In other words, in other words, if we go over that number, you'll take notice, your team way outperforms, or if your team way underperforms, you'll take notice. That'll wake you up, that's your thermostat. That's your management thermostat. If it goes too low, the air conditioning kicks on, if it goes too high, sorry goes too low heat kicks on, goes too high air conditioning kicks on. You don't, in between that number, right, in between that number, you don't take notice. So, if you're say 10%, take 10% of your revenue, that's how much I can steal from you before you would even notice. And as long as I was stealing within that range, you wouldn't even know where to look. Like and follow this podcast so you can learn more. My name is Carl Gould and this has been your #70secondCEO.

Paul, Jon, and Liz continue their conversation about Jesus and how he loves. In the podcast, they reference a chart on the four ways Jesus loves that you can view here. "When Jesus sets up a boundary, it's because people want him to do something that, in the world's eyes, would be way more glorious or easy. He'll put up boundaries to keep to his mission that's actually much harder and more painful. The boundaries he sets up keep him on track to not what the world wants, or even what his friends want, but what his Father wants." "We talk sometimes about having our loves rightly ordered, but we also need our fears rightly ordered." "The act of gentle intrusion is fading away. People are so fearful of triggering someone. What keeps them from loving is their risk assessment, with the result that people's lives are narrowing around the self."

In this episode of On The Mark, Mark Immelman welcomes back Will Stubbs from Zen Green Stage / Zen Swing Stage for a conversation that hits a major truth about modern golf: the game doesn't have an attraction problem—it has a retention problem. Golf participation has surged, but most new players don't stick—largely because golf is hard, practice isn't realistic, and learning infrastructure hasn't kept up with access. Will breaks down the “practice gap”—why sterile range/simulator reps don't translate to the real golf course where slopes, lies, turf conditions, and wind change everything. Then he shares actionable ways to improve faster: build situational awareness, train on uneven lies, and learn to read greens using a simple clock-face method that teaches you to see gravity like a blueprint. In This Episode, You'll Discover: Why golf has a retention problem (not an attraction problem) The stat that should shock everyone: only ~25–27% become “committed golfers” Why most beginners never get lessons (and how golf learning hasn't scaled) The “practice gap”: why simulator/range practice can be misleading Why slopes (not length) are a course's greatest defense A simple putting read framework: Zero-grade line + clock face How Zen Green Stage helps golfers train compound breaks and real-world pace/reads How Zen Swing Stage recreates your lie instantly after each shot in sim play Why better practice turns fear into confidence (tension comes from doubt), and Where to find Zen + resources. Key Takeaways Access has exploded, learning hasn't. More people try golf, but most don't become committed players. Information ≠ understanding. Data is everywhere, but experience is what teaches. Practice should look like golf. If you only train flat lies, the course will expose you. Read greens by finding gravity first. The clock-face method simplifies the entire problem. Better puzzle-solvers score better. Golf is problem solving—practice needs variety and constraints. This podcast is also available to watch on YouTube. Search and subscribe to Mark Immelman.
