How Behavior-Driven Design Is Defining the Future of the Home KBIS Series 2026, findings and experiences from the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show, recorded live from the KBIS Podcast Studio presented by AJ Madison. This was the second year of this program and we built on last year's show with even more experts in the industry sharing experience, findings and industry-leading insights. KBIS Podcast Studio Resources: KBIS AJ Madison NKBA LUXE Interiors + Design SubZero, Wolf & Cove SKS | Signature Kitchen Suite Hearth & Home Technologies Kitchen365 Green Forrest Cabinetry Midea What happens when home innovation prioritizes real-world habits over flashy, unnecessary features? This conversation explores how a deep understanding of how people use their appliances every day leads to intentional solutions that fit every lifestyle.  Join Justin Reinke, Head of Product Marketing at Midea, and Ryan Shaffer, Sr. Technical Product Planning Engineer at Midea, to discuss how hundreds of hours of in-home observation drive breakthroughs in everything from acoustic comfort to specialized hygiene. By analyzing universal pain points—like the rise of sustainable drinkware and open-concept living—we examine the R&D required to make daily chores easier through practical, performance-driven design that works harder for the household. For decades, appliance innovation followed a predictable formula: more features, more technology, more complexity. Digital displays replaced analog controls. Connectivity introduced remote operation. Artificial intelligence promised optimization. But somewhere along the way, innovation lost sight of its most important objective—serving the human being. Today, that philosophy is changing. At KBIS 2026, one of the most important conversations wasn't about technology itself, but about behavior. Appliance manufacturers are increasingly recognizing that true innovation does not begin in engineering labs. It begins in homes—watching how people live. This shift represents a fundamental evolution in product development. Instead of asking what technology can do, manufacturers are asking what people actually need. Consider the refrigerator. It is opened dozens of times each day, often absentmindedly, during moments of distraction, urgency, or fatigue. Every movement—the height of a shelf, the accessibility of a drawer, the ease of filling a glass—shapes the user's experience. These micro-interactions define whether an appliance feels intuitive or frustrating. Similarly, dishwashers must now accommodate modern behavioral realities. Reusable bottles, travel tumblers, and complex accessories require flexibility that traditional rack designs never anticipated. Washing machines must operate quietly enough to coexist within open-plan homes, where appliance noise becomes part of the lived environment. These are not technological problems. They are human problems. The most forward-thinking manufacturers have embraced observation as their primary design tool. By studying real households, engineers and designers can identify friction points invisible in traditional research. The goal is not to add features, but to remove obstacles. This approach also challenges the industry's historical obsession with specifications. Feature lists do not guarantee usability. Connectivity does not guarantee convenience. Technology that requires explanation has already failed its most important test. The future appliance must be intuitive. It must integrate seamlessly into daily routines, supporting behavior rather than disrupting it. It must operate quietly, reliably, and predictably. It must reduce mental load, not increase it. Perhaps most importantly, it must respect the reality that appliances are not aspirational objects. They are functional infrastructure. They exist to support life, not define it. This shift toward behavior-driven design reflects a broader maturation of the appliance industry. Innovation is no longer measured by novelty, but by invisibility. The best appliances do their job so well that users never think about them at all. In the end, the future of appliances will not be defined by how advanced they are. It will be defined by how effortlessly they serve the people who depend on them every day. Behavior as the Foundation of Innovation Product development begins with observing real-world habits. Behavioral insights reveal needs consumers rarely articulate. Design solutions prioritize intuitive use over technical novelty. Practical Innovation vs Feature Saturation Most consumers use only a small percentage of available features. Simplification improves usability, adoption, and satisfaction. Innovation must solve real problems—not marketing problems. Appliances as Infrastructure for Daily Life Refrigerators open dozens of times daily, making ergonomic design critical. Dishwashers, washers, and refrigeration now integrate into behavioral routines. Appliances increasingly support lifestyle efficiency, not just task completion. Noise Reduction and Environmental Integration Open floor plans make acoustic performance essential. Quiet operation improves perceived quality and livability. Engineering focus has expanded beyond performance to experiential comfort. Replacement Market Realities and Design Flexibility Most appliance purchases are replacements, not full remodels. Products must integrate visually and functionally with mixed-brand kitchens. Flexible, accessible design supports long-term usability. Sustainability Through Longevity and Efficiency Sustainability now includes durability, waste reduction, and performance efficiency. Better storage and preservation reduce food waste. Long product lifecycles contribute to environmental responsibility.

When Screens Replace Connection: Helping Young Men Return to Real Life with David Savage

What happens when connection becomes optional and isolation starts to feel normal? On Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, hosted by Yusuf, we explore why more young men are quietly retreating into screens—and what that withdrawal is really trying to protect. This episode is for parents, partners, mentors, and young men who feel stuck between pressure and numbness. Guest David Savage unpacks how texting, gaming loops, fear of judgment, and fatherlessness can shape modern masculinity—and why small, relational shifts (not shame) can invite men back into real connection. About the Guest: David Savage is a father of four and the host of the podcast Wrestling with the Inner Man. He's also the author of The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, focused on helping young men reconnect with purpose and faith. Episode Chapters: 00:05:53 — When isolation becomes the new normal 00:07:16 — The first signs: texting replacing real conversation 00:08:14 — What changed in public life: earbuds, avoidance, disconnection 00:10:03 — Why “screen addiction” is an incomplete explanation 00:13:17 — The pressures young men carry that make retreat feel safer 00:18:17 — How isolation shows up in dating, college, and work 00:22:06 — Small shifts that help: mentorship and intergenerational support Key Takeaways: Treat isolation as a signal, not a character flaw—ask what it's protecting. Replace “lectures” with low-pressure invitations: a walk, a task, a shared hobby. Build real-world confidence through small skill reps (conversation, meetings, eye contact). Prioritize mentorship: a steady older guide can reduce shame and confusion. Watch for “shortcut culture” (easy wins, constant stimulation) and restore healthy challenge. Create spaces where young men can be honest without feeling judged or “fixed.” How to Connect With the Guest: Website: https://thesavagepath.com/  Podcast: Wrestling with the Inner Man (Apple & Spotify) Book: The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity   Want to be a guest on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life? All Home Care Matters and our host, Lance A. Slatton were honored to welcome Dan Cohen as guest to the show.   About Dan Cohen:   Dan Cohen is a dynamic entrepreneur with over twenty-five years of experience and a deep passion for brand building. Dan is recognized for his strategic approach and ability to foster strong, lasting relationships. With release of his book, Awakenings In Real Life, he tells the story of his dad's awakening from his dementia. When his father awoke, it woke Dan up too. Dan also hosts a podcast with the same name.   About Awakenings In Real Life:   The "Awakenings In Real Life" podcast tells inspiring stories of transformation, meaning and hope. While we typically think of an Awakening as a "Getting Up" or "Spiritual" or "Religious" in nature, an "Awakening" is also an awareness, recognition, or realization of something. Dan Cohen shares stories of people awakening and then triumphing over bullying, addiction, disability, illness, trauma, loss, near death experiences and more.   The "Awakenings In Real Life" memoir was inspired from his father's awakening from his dementia, and the message dad sent that he still appreciated and wanted to live life, an experience that reshaped his perceptions of family, memory, and resilience. In these pages, Dan draws on a lifetime of lessons from his father's humor, toughness, and compassion, sharing family stories of love, inspiration, and hope.

In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (SB 3.31.1), it is mentioned: karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa jantur dehopapattaye striyāḥ praviṣṭa udaraṁ puṁso retaḥ-kaṇāśrayaḥ The living entity, who is helplessly controlled by the three modes of material nature, gets placed by daiva (higher control) into various material forms. For instance, right now we're in a body—check and see if you're still in it. You are there? Everyone okay? Yeah, we're in a body right now. We won't be here for very long. You know how long life is? It's about the length of a "reel." How long is a reel? Is there a clear definition? I can't figure it out if there's actually a definition of how long a reel is. Does anybody actually know? You guys don't look at the phone ever? You've never seen a reel, huh? Audience: "A minute or less." A minute or less. Okay, that's how long the human life is. It's about a minute or less. Could be ten seconds, even. And we're in many different "reels." So, karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa—we're placed in different bodies and we have a little "reel-life." Not R-E-A-L, but R-E-E-L-life. 'Karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa jantur dehopapattaye striyāḥ praviṣṭa udaraṁ'... we just wake up one day and everyone says, "Welcome to your new family!" And it could be a squirrel family. Or you could be a fish in the water. Fishes are in schools, and then there are flocks of birds. You can end up in a flock, or you can end up in a pack. Or crows—they are called a "murder." A "murder of crows." That's how you group them. So, we're forced by material nature. But gṛhṇato 'nuyugaṁ tanūḥ (SB 10.8.13) means Kṛṣṇa Bhagavān, the Supreme, is not forced. He comes by choice. Or as Prabhupāda puts it in his book, Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He comes by His own "sweet will." We also have willpower, but it doesn't give us autonomy—complete autonomy. Kṛṣṇa has complete autonomy. He's abhijñaḥ (completely conscious of everything) and svarāṭ (completely independent). He can do as He wishes, never forced by anything or anyone. This is what Garga Muni said about the appearance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, otherwise known as Bhagavān, the source of everything and all opulences. He said: "āsan varṇās trayo hy asya gṛhṇato 'nuyugaṁ tanūḥ." Tanūḥ means He has different bodies. Now, His body is different from the body of a soul that's placed in a material body. Our body is.. On today's podcast, the guys discussed their beefs of the week, life hacks, the NHL Trade deadline, Oilers moves, the Nation HQ snack controversy, and more. The guys kicked off the Thursday episode of Real Life with a new order of operations: they started the podcast with their beefs of the week instead of wrapping up the show. Wanye started the segment with a drive-thru complaint after his breakfast order was missing both the egg and milk he requested. Jay followed up with a beef of the week of his own after he got told off in traffic for simply occupying his space.Changing gears, the conversation turned to life hacks the fellas have amassed over the years, and how Wanye has a new parking hack at Rogers Place that he refuses to share. Somehow, the parking discussion led to a discussion about snacks at Nation HQ and how a few staffers are being accused of overindulging in the office fridge. As you'll hear, the mission for the boys is to start capturing greed red-handed and turning it into content. Finally, the guys wrapped up the podcast with the Thursday episode of Real Life with a run of topics, starting with the Nation Vacation to Vegas, the Oilers making moves ahead of the trade deadline, what they could potentially do before the buzzer, NHL insiders calling trades before they're done, and whatever other random stories and items they could come up with to fill the time. Khalda Hashash shares her lived journey of adapting across cultures, learning to lead with emotional intelligence, and building a practical way to shift from automatic reactions to intentional responses. About the Guest: Khalda Hashash is originally from Sudan and now lives in the United States. She is an entrepreneur and leadership consultant, and she earned a master's degree in leadership and communication. She is also a mother of three. Episode Chapter: 00:03:33 – Why this conversation is audio-only and what we're exploring today 00:06:33 – Thoughts → reactions → habits: how a life gets built quietly 00:08:08 – Moving from Sudan to the U.S.: culture shock, language, and overwhelm 00:11:19 – Misconception: “This is just how I am” (and why thinking comes first) 00:14:32 – When your whole world changes in a moment: fear, loss, and uncertainty 00:17:08 – Choosing growth: leadership education and raising kids between cultures 00:19:14 – A practical starting point: self-observation, emotional intelligence, and managing reactions Key Takeaways: Notice the first thought before you address the situation—your reaction starts there. Practice “logic first”: pause and ask, What do I actually know to be true right now? Track your triggers for 1–2 weeks: what consistently irritates you, and what consistently calms you. Shift blame to curiosity: Why am I interpreting this as personal? Build emotional intelligence by managing three things: actions, reactions, and response timing. Remember: positive thinking isn't forced optimism—it's reducing unnecessary negativity. How to Connect With the Guest: https://kashconsulting.us/    Want to be a guest on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life? It can be an interesting thought experiment to think about real historic events and the Hollywood films that were inspired by them. Top Gun (and even Top Gun: Maverick) are well known and beloved films inspired by real people and real events. The flying is cinematic, thrilling, and expertly choreographed—but it's presented in a story that's built for entertainment and inspiration. Real life as was experienced by Rich Allen is entirely different. Flying the Douglas A4 Skyhawk wasn't a movie set; it was a high stakes reality for Rich and his crew members. Carrier operations were some of the most demanding aspects of aviation, let alone the additional pressures of combat missions. Each launch and landing of aircraft carried its own risks. Each mission came with its own uncertainties. As cinematic as it can all sound, what makes stories like Rich's stand out isn't the adrenaline or the skill, it's the cost that was experienced by him and his crew. From experiencing the loss of two close friends to surviving a plane crash to the multitude of other sacrifices that Rich made, real life is more than the thrill that movies focus on. There are consequences and the weighty responsibility to carry on despite hardship. Rich's story is nothing short of inspiring and engaging and you won't want to miss what he has to share. If you know someone who might like to hear the stories of a real life Top Gun pilot, consider sharing it! Get full access to The Well Said Podcast at wellsaidpodcast.substack.com/subscribe

Discipleship was never meant to stay in a classroom—it was meant to move into your life.In Part 3 of the Come and See Conference series, Lisa Schwarz returns to Jesus' invitation in John 1: “Come and see.” Not “Come and listen,” not “Come and learn,” but come close… and stay awhile. This message reframes mentorship and spiritual leadership as something deeply relational: opening your life, inviting others alongside you, and letting transformation happen through proximity, practice, and presence.Lisa unpacks what it means to be a “Paul” who raises up others without creating mini-mes—cultivating theiranointing, not copying yours. She also lays out the heart posture required for true discipleship: humility, vulnerability, compassion, sacrifice, and service—modeled in Jesus' own life, all the way to His final act of washing feet. You'll hear why disciples grow fastest when they're: • Invited into real life, not just given advice • Mentored with compassion and patience • Walking alongside someone who demonstrates • Loved wellThis is discipleship with sleeves rolled up.A life that says, “Come with me… and watch what Jesus does.”This episode continues the Come and See series (Parts 1–2), exploring how discipleship becomes powerful when it becomes personal. To go deeper, read: Come and See: The Jesus Approach to Equipping Biblical DisciplesStay connected: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/buFNYvv Hosted on Acast. Mahnaz has lived with volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity in ways most product teams never will. In this episode, we talk about what happens when VUCA isn't theoretical, how to avoid becoming an order taker, and how courage, empathy, and initiative can reshape your role as a designer. What if the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity you're facing at work feel overwhelming only because you've never had to live through it in your everyday life?I throw the word VUCA around like it's a trendy framework. Volatility. Uncertainty. Complexity. Ambiguity. But for Mahnaz Hajesmaeili, those aren't abstract concepts; they're lived experience.Originally from Iran, before becoming a product designer, she built a life in China, knowing she could never fully belong there. When COVID hit, borders closed, savings ran out, and the life she had carefully constructed disappeared almost overnight. She returned to Iran, started over, taught herself UX, and eventually rebuilt her career in the United States. That's not “roadmap volatility.” That's real volatility. This week, I chat with Mahnaz to explore how living through that level of instability reshaped her approach to work. Why rejected designs don't shake her. Why unclear strategy doesn't rattle her and why she doesn't default to being an order taker. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by shifting priorities or frustrated by leaders who “don't know what they want,” this episode offers perspective—and practical lessons.Give it a listen. It might change how you define uncertainty.Helpful Links:• Connect with Mahnaz on LinkedIn

Thursday afternoon means a fresh episode of Real Life was recorded and edited, and it's ready to help you wrap up the week. On today's podcast, the guys discussed the Wayne Gretzky locker-room snub rumour, the Oilers' disastrous effort in Anaheim, Tristan Jarry's struggles, Tyler's hypotheticals, and more. The guys kicked off the Thursday episode of Real Life with a conversation about the Olympic hockey final and a rumour that came out this morning saying Wayne Gretzky was not allowed in the room for a pre-game speech. Given that the rumour started on Barn Burner, it's been interesting to see how much noise came out of Mike Commodore's comments on the show. While the rumour has been shot down by Hockey Canada, social media has continued to run with the story.Changing gears, the conversation turned to Tyler's list of "fun" hypothetical scenarios that weren't really all that fun. Unfortunately, those hypotheticals didn't do much to lift the mood in the room, as everyone was still notably annoyed by how the Oilers are playing right now. From undoing the Skinner-for-Jarry trade or adjusting current Oilers contracts to free up cap dollars, Tyler offered a few this-or-that scenarios that were as sad as they were tricky to parse. Finally, the guys wrapped up the podcast with the Thursday episode of Real Life, running through topics, starting with staying away from social media in the days after the gold medal game, rivalries growing the game, the 2028 World Cup vs. a Summit Series-style head-to-head, and beefs of the week. As you'll hear and likely expect, this week's episode of Real Life covered a lot of ground and topics that were all over the map. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this raw and deeply honest episode of Busy, Gritty, Inked & Witchy, Morgan shares a powerful life update about anxiety, physical illness, identity shifts, and what she calls "personal power states." After a severe reaction to a medication landed her in the hospital, Morgan experienced a week and a half of intense physical discomfort, anxiety spirals, and emotional upheaval. Instead of resisting it, she chose to sit in the discomfort and uncover what was really happening beneath the surface. In this episode, she breaks down: • How anxiety attaches to physical discomfort • Why resisting fear keeps you stuck in loops • What "personal power states" are and how to identify yours • The difference between restrictive fear and expansive freedom • How identity shifts happen in real time • Speaking your truth when it isn't well received • Energetic cord cutting and reclaiming sovereignty • The birth of Alchemy- a deeper energetic tier inside Inked Spirit Coven Morgan explains how recognizing her core personal power state — freedom — helped her move from fear and contraction back into expansion and agency. If you've struggled with anxiety, identity changes, speaking your truth, or feeling disconnected from yourself, this episode offers grounded insight and practical reflection. ✨ Patreon bonus this week: A guided journal prompt sheet to help you identify your own personal power states.
