The Spark Three: Stephanie Barron Hall on Chemistry, Performance, and the Search for Self

What happens when a Three stops performing and starts telling the truth — even to herself? Anthony and I sat down with Steph Baron Hall, author of Enneagram in Real Life and host of the Enneagram in Real Life podcast, for a conversation that starts with instinctual stacking and ends up somewhere much deeper. Steph — a sexual (or "spark") dominant Three — unpacks how the sexual instinct differs from the social Three most people picture, why she was so often mistaken for a Four, and how she's learned to notice the exact moment she starts performing instead of being present. We move through the difference between achieving your identity and receiving it, the religious trauma that shaped Steph's relationship to spirituality, and why she's going back to school in her late thirties to become a therapist. Along the way, I offer a memorable image for the false self — the "pinched self" — and the three of us talk honestly about what it actually costs to tell yourself the truth, not just other people. Steph is the author of Enneagram in Real Life, available wherever books are sold. Find her at ninetypes.co and on her own podcast, Enneagram in Real Life.   ABOUT STEPHANIE BARRON HALL Stephanie Barron Hall (M.A. Organizational Communication & Leadership) is an Accredited Enneagram Practitioner, author of The Enneagram in Love (2020) and Enneagram in Real Life (2025), creator of @NineTypesCo, and host of the Enneagram in Real Life podcast. Stephanie has been facilitating personality-centric team development for years as an outside consultant for organizations ranging from small businesses to Fortune 100 companies. Stephanie's approach to the Enneagram is grounded in communication theory and emphasizes deep personal work through application, curiosity, and self-awareness.

Classic Fishing Without Bait 452: Is Social Media Real Life?

    Fishing Without Bait

Why are we revisiting this episode now? As students head back to school, conversations around social media, young people, screen time, online identity, and mental health are once again dominating the news. Recent legal action involving major social media platforms has also renewed questions about how these spaces are designed and how they affect the people using them. That makes this conversation from Fishing Without Bait Episode 452, originally released January 14, 2025, feel particularly timely. Jim Ellermeyer is joined by Chris Maverick, professor of digital narrative interactive design at the University of Pittsburgh and a former professional wrestler, for a fascinating discussion about storytelling, performance, identity, escapism, and mindfulness. Chris draws a connection between professional wrestling and social media: both involve creating a version of yourself for an audience. The difference is that we usually understand that a professional wrestler is playing a character. On social media, those lines aren't always as clear. We see someone's vacations, accomplishments, relationships, perfect photos, opinions, and carefully selected moments—but rarely see the arguments, frustrations, insecurities, bills, bad days, or ordinary moments happening outside the frame. When we compare our complete lives to someone else's edited presentation, we create expectations that reality can never satisfy. Jim and Chris explore: • Why social media should be understood partly as a performance medium • The difference between a person's online identity and everyday reality • How comparison can distort our expectations of our own lives • Why professional wrestling offers an interesting lesson about personas and storytelling • The role of escapism and entertainment • How mindfulness helps us separate what is real from what is being presented to us • Why even successful relationships contain arguments, frustrations, and ordinary problems • The importance of paying attention to the life directly in front of us The technology continues to change, but the central Fishing Without Bait question remains the same: What do you know for sure, and what is actually right in front of you? What a profound honor it was to sit down with Shea for this conversation. After our mom passed in November 2022, my sister introduced our family to Shea's work. Living near the church where Shea was hosting Healing Circles at the time, both my sister and dad found immense comfort and support through her gatherings—and they've continued to stay connected with the Doing Grief community in meaningful ways. I was also fortunate to spend one-on-one time with Shea, navigating my own journey through my mom's transition. I'm truly grateful to share this conversation with you. Whether you are actively moving through a loss or walking beside someone who is, I believe this dialogue will inspire you to show up with greater presence, vulnerability, and self-compassion—helping you tap into your own innate capacity for healing. The Wholeness of Healing: How loss touches the entire human experience—body, mind, heart, and spirit. Adaptive Grieving Dynamics: Understanding your unique grief style and uncovering your personal healing strengths. Everyday Rites & Rituals: Simple, heartfelt practices to help families, children, and individuals navigate major life transitions. Why desperately wanting more support doesn't necessarily mean you're comfortable receiving it. Why self-trust has nothing to do with always making the “right” decision. And why play does not require buying an adult coloring book you don't actually want to use.

Thursday afternoon means a fresh episode of Real Life was recorded and edited, and it's ready to help you wrap up the week and preview tomorrow' Nation Golf Tournament out in Millwoods. On today's podcast, the guys discussed the Connor Hellebuyck, TV talk, weather woes, and much more. The guys kicked off this week's episode of Real Life with a conversation about Connor Hellebuyck confirming his trade request out of Winnipeg with a written statement on social media. Needless to say, Jets fans took another kick to the shin on Thursday after their star goalie confirmed that he no longer wants to play in their city. While many insiders have speculated on the situation since the Olympics, it seems like we're nearing the end of the Hellebuyck era.Changing gears, the guys spent the next chunk of the podcast talking about the San Francisco 49ers owner getting busted for soliciting prostitution at a trailer park in Ohio. As you'll hear, the boys had plenty of questions regarding why a billionaire would make such a poor life choice, but that quickly devolved into making fun of the guy for being cheap. From there, the guys talked about the Cleveland Browns, and how they never seem to make anything easier on themselves, especially when it comes to their quarterback situation. Finally, the guys wrapped up the podcast on the Thursday episode of Real Life with a run of topics, starting with a look at the Real Life football pool, the Nation Golf tournament coming up tomorrow in Millwoods, and the RIPON event that will be happening at The Pint on September 26th. Needless to say, this event will be one of the biggest parties the company has ever thrown, and one you will absolutely want to mark on your calendars. Hosted on Acast. What happens when Christianity, atheism, Islam, and competing worldviews meet around the dinner table? Many Christians know what they believe but feel intimidated when someone challenges their faith. Questions about science, suffering, other religions, morality, and the reliability of the Bible can quickly make us feel unprepared. But apologetics was never meant to remain in classrooms and formal debates. Dr. Louis Markos joins Dr. Jeff Myers to explore apologetics as it actually happens: through conversations with real people asking difficult questions. Drawing from his book My Apologetics Dinner Party: A Real-Life Socratic Dialogue, Markos explains how Christians can uncover the worldview assumptions beneath objections, engage atheists and people of other religions with conviction and respect, and learn from Jesus's approach to questions and disagreement. Discover how to defend the Christian faith without reducing apologetics to winning arguments, and how truth, wisdom, humility, and persuasion can work together to point people toward Christ.

Send us Fan MailWelcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Lauren and Alice tackle one of the biggest frustrations in dog training: why does your dog seem to listen perfectly at home, then forget everything the moment you step outside? If you've ever wondered why a brilliant behaviour in your living room completely disappears on a walk - and how to bridge that gap - this episode is for you.Together, they explore why dogs don't automatically transfer skills from one environment to another, and why expecting them to do so can leave both ends of the lead feeling frustrated. You'll discover why training for the situation is so much more effective than trying to train in the situation, and how building the right foundations before heading into busy environments can completely change the outcome.Lauren and Alice also share the practical progression they use to help dogs succeed in the real world. From your living room and garden to quiet public spaces, secure fields, industrial estates and even car parks, they explain how carefully choosing your training environments gives your dog the chance to practise the right behaviours before distractions become overwhelming. You'll hear why these often-overlooked locations can be some of the very best places to build loose lead walking, engagement and confidence.Along the way, they discuss why taking a short break from traditional walks can sometimes be the kindest thing you can do, how to prevent unwanted rehearsal before it becomes a habit, and why setting your dog up to succeed is one of the fastest ways to build skills that genuinely stick. Whether you're raising a puppy, living with a reactive dog or simply dreaming of calmer, more connected walks, this episode is packed with practical ideas you can start using straight away.Ready to take those brilliant skills from your living room out into the real world? She talks about releasing the pressure to do things “right,” staying present through the unknown, the myth of having it all, and why she refuses to look back with regret.Meanwhile, Bradshaw catches us up on a summer of travel and retreats in Italy and Portugal. He reflects on the importance of letting go of control, choosing opportunities from a place of passion, and what it's been like watching the community they've built through the podcast and Instagram come to life through real friendships and experiences around the world. This episode is less about having a lesson to teach and more about reflecting on the season we're both in- birth, travel, change, community, surrender, and learning how to simply be present. We missed you. It feels good to be back.Want to support our podcast? Join our Patreon for extra content
