Monday afternoon means a fresh episode of Real Life was recorded, edited, and is ready to help you kick off your workweek. On today's podcast, the guys discussed the NHL Draft, Tyler's cat conundrum, Oilers rumours, and more. The guys started the podcast with a conversation about the strange NHL Draft that happened on Friday without the teams being in attendance, while the rest of the players and media were still there. Not only was the first round incredibly boring and awkward, but the fact that the two days weren't any faster than normal was truly disappointing. Next up, the guys discussed the new CFL collaboration with OVO and how partnering with Drake is a great way to create some buzz in a league that desperately needs attention. The OVO/CFL collaboration allowed Tyler and Bagged Milk to discuss their price limit for buying clothes. When OVO collaborated with the NHL, the cost of hoodies was astronomical, which suggests the same will likely be true for this new CFL merchandise. The next topic was an examination of TikTok algorithms, specifically focusing on the types of content that occupied the boys' feeds. From landscaping to sports science to the random chaos that sometimes fills the void, the remarkable thing about TikTok is how the platform seems to capture people's attention, even when the videos are not their typical interests. Finally, the guys wrapped up the Monday episode of Real Life with a recap of the Tyler golf challenge and how there are plenty of people on Twitter who don't believe he has a chance. While Tyler feels confident that he can get the job done — Baggedmilk agrees with him — he does need to think about the challenge tactically if he doesn't want to gas himself out before the job is done. The newlyweds, Alvin and Gladys, were on a little vacation at the Big Chief Auto Court in Truckee, Calif. — it may have been their honeymoon — when they went out together to the local cinema to see “The Postman Always Rings Twice.” It was September of 1946, so it was the old film-noir version starring Lana Turner. As you'll surely remember if you've seen it (or a more recent remake of it), this is a film in which Turner's character, Cora Smith, seduces a drifter named Frank and convinces him to murder her husband for her so that the two of them can take over ownership of his restaurant. After the film, Gladys was in a pensive mood as she turned to Alvin, the eager 23-year-old cowboy she'd married in Reno a day or two before. “It's too bad something like that can't happen to the doctor,” she remarked to him, innocuously. By “the doctor,” she meant Dr. Willis Broadhurst, a prominent Jordan Valley rancher and chiropractor — her other husband. Or, rather, one of her other husbands. At that particular moment, Gladys, a strikingly pretty and charismatic 40-year-old, was married to three different men, and there were four additional failed marriages in her rear-view mirror. If there was anyone for whom the wedding bells sounded like the alarm clock, it was Gladys. Or, maybe they sounded like funeral bells. Because less than a month later, Alvin actually did it.... In this engaging episode, Guy talked with Marty Wuttke, a pioneering neurofeedback expert and meditation practitioner, about the critical role of brain function in spiritual awakening and rehabilitation. Marty delved into the science of neuroplasticity, the transformative effects of meditation, and the powerful healing potential within each individual. He shared insights from his extensive experience working with thousands of clients and explains how neurofeedback can assist in treating anxiety, depression, and other disorders. Additionally, Marty recapped his personal journey from overcoming addiction to establishing a meditative and spiritual practice that has shaped his approach to healing. The discussion also touches on the significance of body work and holistic methods in achieving mental and physical well-being. About Marty: As a pioneer in the field of bio- and neurofeedback, Marty developed his unique and holistic approach to neurotherapy (Wuttke Method) based on over 35 years of experience in the field. Beginning as a deeply committed meditation teacher, he quickly saw the need for adding a scientifically based, neurophysiological component to catalyze meditation training and help meditators reach a freer and happier life.  Marty was affiliated with Ridgecrest Hospital and Woodridge Psychiatric Hospital from 1984 to 1995, where he designed and directed the first large-scale inpatient neurofeedback program in the United States. Neurofeedback was used at the hospital as an integral part of the treatment program for over 11 years. Marty was responsible for QEEG evaluation, analyses and application. More than 1500 patients went through his neurofeedback training.  Marty is a pioneer in combining multiple protocols of neurofeedback training as a self-regulation tool for people suffering from a wide array of issues, including: depression, traumatic brain injury, nicotine dependence, eating disorders, chronic pain, anxiety, chemical dependency, and alcoholism. He continues to develop, research, and teach protocols for neurofeedback applications with ADD/ADHD, learning disabilities and developmental disorders, autoimmune disorders, and stress related disorders. In 2003, new advanced whole-body neuro/biofeedback technology hardware and software was developed under Marty's guidance. Engaging Through Adversity: Exploring Relationships, Commitment, and Minor League BaseballKey TakeawaysNavigating the complexities of commitment requires open communication and empathy, essential factors often overlooked in relationships.Engagement with personal passions, like minor league baseball, provides a unique avenue for stress relief and family bonding.Balancing personal desires with relationship responsibilities highlights the need for nuanced decision-making in long-term commitments. The Spirit of Minor League Baseball: More Than Just a GameThe transcript opens with Mike's anecdotal journey into the world of minor league baseball, a narrative that evolves from initial indifference to genuine enthusiasm. He highlights the allure of a local Triple-A baseball team: "They're one step under the majors… I've never seen a team like that." This experience mirrors a core theme—finding joy and excitement in seemingly mundane activities.Minor league baseball, as Mike describes, offers more than just a game. It creates a sense of community and connection, especially when contrasted with more commercially driven major league experiences. "The price was really intriguing… 50 bucks total, 25 a ticket," he shares, emphasizing accessibility and value. This affordability allows more frequent and intimate family outings, fostering deeper relational bonds.Furthermore, Mike's recollections of baseball as a medium for family interaction underscore its potential for enhancing relationship dynamics. Shared experiences, whether at a thrilling game or through everyday activities, can rejuvenate and build family cohesion, a crucial element often susceptible to neglect amidst life's pressures.Navigating Commitment: Challenges in Long-Term RelationshipsA significant portion of the dialogue transitions to the struggles within marriage, particularly when personal health challenges arise. Mike's candid introspection reveals the emotional and physical strain when a partner grapples with debilitating health issues. "I've told her what I need, but I feel those hard conversations only put more stress on her," Mike comments, highlighting the critical role communication plays in managing relationship complexities. The dialogue traverses the emotional landscape of maintaining commitment amidst adversity. Torya's emphatic stance—"When he married her, he promised in sickness and in health"—is a poignant reminder of marital vows. It emphasizes the ongoing, evolving nature of these commitments, urging couples to adapt and find strength through mutual understanding and empathy. Moreover, the idea of persistence in nurturing relationships emerges as a theme worthy of reflection. "He's a trash can, this dude. He's a trash can," Torya asserts, critiquing the apparent lack of effort to remedy relational distress. This tough-love perspective underscores the necessity of actively and continuously engaging in efforts to sustain relational well-being.Balancing Personal Needs with Relationship ResponsibilitiesThe discourse also delves into the tension between individual desires and collective responsibilities within marriage. Mike voices a yearning for partnership support: "Right now, I feel perpetually tired, alone, and starved for any type of affection." This longing for reciprocal involvement and support reflects the broader implications of balancing personal and familial obligations. However, the dialogue suggests that meeting personal needs should not come at the expense of relational integrity. Torya challenges Mike's perspective, advocating for a more inclusive approach: "Why not suggest that the two of you go to therapy?" This proposition acknowledges the need for collaborative problem-solving as a pathway to harmony, rather than unilateral decisions driven by unfulfilled desires. What emerges from their conversation is a nuanced understanding of commitment that goes beyond superficial expectations. By exploring avenues like shared therapy or open dialogues, couples can find equilibrium between personal satisfaction and shared responsibilities, ultimately reinforcing the foundational strength of their partnership. Thus, the transcript unveils significant layers of interacting themes: the unexpected joy from shared community experiences, like minor league baseball, the necessity for open dialogue in relationships, and the mindful navigation of personal versus collective needs. The conversation not only highlights these intricate dynamics but also offers profound insights into how individuals can foster resilient, thriving partnerships amidst adversity. By embracing empathy and mutual collaboration, the complexities of long-term commitments can transform into opportunities for growth and deeper connection. TimestampSummary0:06Experiencing Minor League Baseball's Thrill and Affordability1:56Sports Attendance and Ticket Pricing Concerns3:19Love, Pets, and Controversial Conversations6:03Contemplating Divorce Amidst Wife's Chronic Health Struggles9:16Commitment and Encouragement in Marriage Amidst Challenges11:51Relationship Struggles and Social Media's Role in Seeking Advice16:15Perspectives on Marital Conflict and Communication

Thursday afternoon means a fresh episode of Real Life was recorded, edited, and is ready to help you get through what's left of your workweek. On today's podcast, the guys discussed getting struck by lightning, Jay and Baggedmilk's trip to Toronto, Tyler's bachelor party, and more. The guys kicked off the Thursday episode of Real Life by discussing theories about getting struck by lightning. While certainly improbable, the boys offered Tyler a few different scenarios about what it would take from him to accept a lightning strike. Talking golf then led to a discussion about equipment costs in sports, and how much a person can spend on marginal upgrades in their game. From there, Jay and Baggedmilk recapped their trip to Toronto, describing it as an eventful one, complete with meetings, hard work, and a pair of sweeping power outages. From some fun meetings with the crew at La Poche Bleue to hearing NHL stories from Max Lapierre to sweating through multiple shirts on a daily basis, it was a quick trip to Toronto that was as eventful as it was sweaty. Needless to say, it was 48 eventful hours on the road for the boys. Finally, the podcast wrapped with a story of Jay finally getting his wish of missing out on Tyler's bachelor party after Little Brick's 10th anniversary events got in the way. As you'll hear, the conversation is about whether Jay should still go for a shortened weekend or if he should give up his spot to Tyler's dad. In the end, Jay's media responsibilities ended up getting in the way, and the result is that Ross has been given the green light to replace him.

Is This Our Real Life? A Tech Rhapsody and Conversation with Kimberly Searl

    Working in Yoga

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 26, 2025 58:30

Where do we see ourselves after the tech revolution happens?Well, in one of the most thoughtful conversations I have had about this topic, Kimberly Searl and I get into it.KEY TAKEAWAYS*How do we discern what is “Real” and what is not? This is a huge question, and we need to unpack it. Especially as we look at marketing and online representations of our field, what benchmarks are you using to tell AI-generated content from non-AI-generated content? If you've never thought about it, maybe start paying attention to what you are seeing and have some mental guidelines for your online consumption of yoga content.*IS the life cycle of our services ending? How do we speak to a new generation of people? I have joked more than once that “yoga teacher training” is a thing that millennials did, and let's be honest, that is true. So, how do we make ourselves relevant to a younger generation who are all more tech savvy, and also expect us to answer their need for real life to exist in two spaces–both IRL and online? The answer to this question is going to define our future, friends. So let's talk about it.*Kimberly's quote: “Will I have enough interest in the service I offer to ride out the 4-6 years that it will take for people to realize I am still relevant?” THIS is the question of the hour. There is no doubt in my mind that what we offer, the human connection we cultivate, is vital to our existence. But how many of us will be left by the time this realization reaches mainstream consciousness?*We need to come up with solutions NOW for how we are going to work for the future. Financially, how we are working isn't acceptable for so many reasons. Too many people in our industry are stuck in the 2010s, where it was easy for us to make money because we were the new, trendy, hot commodity on the wellness market. Guess what? We are not that anymore. So now what? Are we ready to stand up and shift our profession, or are we going to prove ourselves to be just a fad? I love us and want us to thrive, and in order to do that, I think conversations about this are beyond necessary. *Can we agree that there needs to be some shifting in expectations on marketing and social media? Cuz Kimberly is right, the most prolific posting people on social media are using AI, which often gives an unrealistic expectation of what we do. Or uses bait-and-switch techniques in order to get people in the door. In fact, I was trained many years ago to use a version of bait-and-switch when I was a budding yoga therapist. We can do it differently, but we need to be realistic about how we show up. And dear god, have a private link to free content to get jobs. I cannot say this enough. If you are applying for a job or contract, have a link to a private video on YouTube that demonstrates who you are as a teacher or yoga therapist. Let's normalize having this with every single touch we give for new jobs. Please, please, please.*What is our relationship with the apps? I really want to know what you are thinking about apps like Calm, etc. Do you love ‘em? Find a benefit for your students and clients? Find their competition? Seriously, I wanna know, so don't hesitate to tell me!*WHY DO WE NOT HAVE STANDARD BEST PRACTICES??? Dear god, if there is anything that our orgs could do, it would be to build best practices. Just saying. But since they aren't doing it, I think I will. So again, email rebecca@workinginyoga.com if you want to contribute to the discussion. We talk about libertarianism, Christian cultural engagement, and the dangers of making politics an idol. This one's honest, raw, and full of hard-won wisdom. Hope it helps you recalibrate.
