The power of empathy for organizational success is not just proven in all the data. Neuroscience backs up our human need to connect and form relationships. But why does empathic communication lead to better business results, improved wellness, decreased burnout, and better workforce retention? We explore that today with Dr. Helen Riess. Persuaded by the belief that empathy can transform healthcare, Dr. Riess founded Empathetics to meet medicine's most pressing challenges. We talk about whether empathy can be taught or if it's an inborn trait, the evidence for how empathy improves measurable outcomes, and what shifts we need to make to more fully bring empathy into work. Dr. Riess shares how the brain works on empathy and how it looks different for different people of all abilities. Finally, we discuss the importance of getting people into the right seat to lead with empathy and why self-regulation skills are critical to leadership success. To access the episode transcript, please scroll down below.Listen and discover:Why empathy is a key survival trait of the human species.Effective shifts to bring more personal compassion, kindness, and empathy to the workplace. The best ways to start your day for effective, empathetic leadership.Advice for dealing with people at different stages and levels of empathy. Why practicing empathy at work spills over into other aspects of your life. In this episode Andrea revisits her 2019 conversation with Dr. Daniel J. Siegel to explore Mindsight — his science-based approach to understanding the mind, integrating the brain, and cultivating empathy. Dr. Siegel explains the difference between mind and brain, the benefits of the Wheel of Awareness meditation, and how Mindsight can change brain structure and improve health. Watch full interview here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7pnea2Vbzc Practical tips include daily Mindsight practice, naming emotions to build self-awareness, and simple emotional check-ins to make learning and relationships more meaningful. This week, in our review of EP 28 with Daniel J. Siegel, MD and his book Mindsight, we learned: ✔ The Difference Between the Mind and the Brain. ✔ The Benefits of The Wheel of Awareness Meditation. ✔ How to Understand and Apply Mindsight that gives us insight into ourselves, and empathy for others. ✔ How Mindsight can change brain structure and improve health. ✔ In order to make teaching and learning more meaningful, what we are teaching must have an element of emotion. Welcome back to SEASON 14 of The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, where we connect the science-based evidence behind social and emotional learning and emotional intelligence training for improved well-being, achievement, productivity and results—using what I saw as the missing link (since we weren't taught this when we were growing up in school), the application of practical neuroscience. I'm Andrea Samadi, and seven years ago, launched this podcast with a question I had never truly asked myself before: (and that is) If productivity and results matter to us—and they do now more than ever—how exactly are we using our brain to make them happen? Most of us were never taught how to apply neuroscience to improve productivity, results, or well-being. About a decade ago, I became fascinated by the mind-brain-results connection—and how science can be applied to our everyday lives. That's why I've made it my mission to bring you the world's top experts—so together, we can explore the intersection of science and social-emotional learning. We'll break down complex ideas and turn them into practical strategies we can use every day for predictable, science-backed results. Episode 371: For today's Episode 371, we continue our journey into the mind with the next interview review. Just a reminder-this review series began back with Episode 366[i], where in Part 3 we discovered an important lesson: if we don't like our results—or what we see on the outside—we need to shift our mindset and look within. True change always begins on the inside. EP 369[ii] we learned how to Rewire our Brain with Dr. Dawson Church and his Bliss Brain Meditations, and then last week, EP 370[iii] with John Medina's Brain Rules, we reviewed how important this understanding of neuroscience is, especially connected to education, teaching and learning. Which brings us to today's review, EP 371, where we revisit a very early episode with clinical professor of psychiatry from UCLA's School of Medicine, Dr. Daniel J Siegel. He's from EP 28[iv], that was recorded back in November of 2019. As we take this journey deeper into the mind, Dr. Dan Siegel offers the perfect place to begin, with his ability to bridge cutting-edge neuroscience and practical wisdom. Dr. Dan Siegel, is well known for his books, trainings and courses that bridge cutting edge neuroscience with mindfulness and therapy. A reminder of his background-he's a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and executive director of the Mindsight Institute[v] where you can find his courses, workshops, books and tools to help anyone understand and apply what can sometimes be complicated scientific concepts and make them easy to understand and applicable to our daily lives. At the end of the interview, I let Dr. Siegel know that I had been practicing his Wheel of Awareness Meditation, and ended up reviewing what I learned on EP 60[vi] where we explored the Science Behind a Meditation Practice. You can watch the whole interview by clicking on the link in the resource section in the show notes, and learn all about Dr. Siegel's work that encompasses schools, with resiliency, brain science and helping our next generation to understand how to apply these important strategies whether it's in our classrooms, or workplaces of the future. Today we will continue to explore within, sharpen our mindset, and learn about what Dr. Siegel calls Mindsight. VIDEO 1 Click Here to Watch In Clip 1, Dr. Siegel unpacks the concept of Mindsight and helps clarify the difference between the mind and the brain, when I asked him to explain this distinction. I knew this wasn't an easy question—as I had already listened to him answer it many times over the years, and still wasn't sure I fully grasped it. In fact, I even tried to tackle it myself back in Episode 23[vii], Understanding Your Brain and Mind for Increased Results. But revisiting this topic now, I can see this concept requires a much deeper reflection. So, I asked Dr. Siegel if we could look at his definition of the mind—one he has been studying for years and that many in his scientific and educational circles agree on. He describes the mind as “an embodied and relational process—since it's in the body and it's in our relationships with one another—that regulates the flow of energy and information.” I wanted to hear him expand on this again, especially around why relationships are so critical for our health, our well-being, and for creating what he calls an integrated brain—which he equates with a healthy brain. His answer helped me to understand the importance of implementing Mindsight into our daily life. He said: “The word mind doesn't actually have a formal definition—not in education, psychotherapy, or even in fields like psychology that study it directly. But if we look closely, the mind includes your subjective experience—that inner feeling of being alive. It also includes consciousness—the ability to know that you're having that subjective experience. And beyond that, there's information processing—which doesn't always require consciousness and is essentially what school focuses on: learning to process information. When you understand the mind as a self-organizing process—a complex system that regulates its own becoming—you begin to see the power of teaching about the mind itself. This is what we call Mindsight. And if we could bring this understanding into education, the outcomes for students would be profoundly different.” Key Tip 1 with Dr. Dan Siegel Understanding and Applying Mindsight which is “the way we focus our attention on the internal world. It's how we bring consciousness to our own thoughts and feelings, and then next, how we attune to the inner world of someone else. Mindsight gives us insight into ourselves, and empathy for others.”

In episode 236 of America Adapts, we're heading to coastal Maine — a place where science, community, and nature all come together to tackle climate change. Adaptation doesn't just happen on its own. It takes data, observation, and sometimes years of research to generate the science that guides decisions. That science is often messy, imperfect, but it's the foundation for every smart adaptation. Effective adaptation requires partnerships. As you will hear, in Maine, you'll find scientists, historians, local communities, and institutions like the Schoodic Institute working side by side. And it's not just about Acadia National Park — the lessons and approaches being tested here have implications far beyond Maine's rocky shores. In this podcast, you'll hear how these partners are mapping mudflats, tracking rockweed, digging into history, and asking hard questions about how to connect science with the urgent work of building resilience. This is the story of the science behind adaptation — and the unique role Maine plays in showing what's possible. This episode was generously sponsored by the Schoodic Institute. Daily Boost Podcast Show Notes Science Behind Getting Excited About Life September 2, 2025 | Episode 5172 Host: Scott Smith Episode Description Scott gets fired up about one of his favorite motivational drivers: anticipation. Turns out, your brain gets more excited about what's coming than what you actually get. He breaks down the science behind why anticipation creates more dopamine than the reward itself. Plus, Scott shares his "anticipation engine" formula that he's been using with clients for 20 years. From concert tickets to motorcycle trips, discover why having something to look forward to might be the missing piece in your motivation puzzle. Featured Story Twenty years ago, Scott's world turned upside down when his wife received a terminal diagnosis the same day he launched his business. She died 100 days later. But even facing certain death, Scott chose to see possibilities instead of just darkness. That decision to embrace the ugly stuff while staying optimistic launched everything he does today. It's a powerful reminder that you can choose to keep your chin up and make life work anyway, even when the world gets crazy. Important Points Anticipation creates more excitement and motivation than actually receiving the reward itself. Your brain's dopamine system fires when you anticipate something good, not when you get it. Building an "anticipation engine" requires having things to look forward to this week, next week, next month, and next year. Memorable Quotes "Anticipation is actually the reward. Isn't that cool?" "When you get real about it, when you just relax a little bit and surrender a little bit and say the world's going to be kind of evil and crazy sometimes, and we're just going to be upbeat and positive and optimistic and go make it work anyway, boom, life happens." "I cannot overstate the importance of having something that you anticipate off in your future that you just get excited about." Scott's Three-Step Approach Put something exciting on your calendar that personally fires you up, not something boring that won't create anticipation. Create expectations with high confidence by choosing outcomes you believe will happen on a scale of zero to 10. Build anticipation at different time intervals by having things to look forward to this week, next week, next month, and further out. This episode shook me.I sat down with John “Goob” Dorsey, fitness coach, content creator, and fearless internet watchdog, and what started as a conversation about the dangers of an unregulated substance called 7-OH (Seven-oh) quickly unraveled into something far darker.John exposes a growing epidemic: a synthetic compound more addictive than morphine, sold legally at gas stations and smoke shops, destroying lives with zero consequences. We talk Reddit forums, withdrawal stories, and the shocking lack of oversight fueling this silent crisis. But that's just the beginning. We also dive into the disturbing world of predator behavior on Roblox, a platform marketed to children yet infested with sexual content and loopholes predators exploit daily. As a dad, that hit me hard. From fake influencers and online scams to pedophile stings and vigilante justice, John pulls no punches. He calls out creeps, frauds, and hypocrites in ways that make you uncomfortable and that's the point. This isn't just a podcast episode. Physician Jessie Mahoney discusses her article "Ending burnout through structure, not gimmicks," making the case that the most effective remedies for physician burnout are systemic changes—reasonable patient loads, thoughtful schedules, supportive leadership, and reduced clerical work—not token perks or quick fixes. Jessie highlights the essential role of lifestyle medicine, mindfulness, and coaching in sustaining physicians' health and purpose, and warns against treating burnout as an individual failing instead of a cultural distress signal. She offers a layered approach combining institutional accountability, personal responsibility, and cultural evolution to create a medical environment where physicians can thrive and, in turn, deliver better patient care. In this episode, we're exploring aromatherapy - something that's getting serious scientific attention. When we inhale essential oils, scent molecules travel directly to our brain's emotional center, creating real neurochemical changes. The research is compelling. Johns Hopkins found that certain essential oils can kill Lyme bacteria better than antibiotics. And lavender has particularly strong evidence - multiple studies show that it genuinely improves sleep quality by increasing restorative delta brain waves. The Veterans Health Administration reviewed 26 systematic studies and found moderate evidence that aromatherapy helps with pain, sleep quality, and stress management. We've been told to run, bike, and diet our way to lower cholesterol, but what if the real game changer is strength training? In this episode, Amy Hudson and Dr. James Fisher unpack the science behind resistance training and why it might be the best exercise to lower cholesterol. They explore what research actually says about lifting weights, LDL reduction, and long-term heart health — and why it might be time to rethink your approach to fitness. Dr. Fisher defines cholesterol--a waxy, hormone-like substance that your body produces and regulates on its own. While it often gets labeled as “bad,” it plays vital roles in hormone production and cell health. Dr. Fisher highlights that what we call “cholesterol” is actually carried in the blood by lipoproteins. LDL (low-density lipoproteins) can clog arteries, while HDL (high-density lipoproteins) helps remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream. Amy breaks down how LDL is considered the “bad” cholesterol because it can harden and narrow artery walls. In contrast, HDL acts like a cleanup crew, carrying unused cholesterol back to the liver to be broken down or reused. Dr. Fisher discusses a meta-analysis of 69 studies involving over 2,000 people that showed consistent benefits from strength training. Participants saw reductions in total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides, along with increases in HDL and adiponectin levels. Amy points out that participants who strength trained saw an average drop in total cholesterol of about 8.5 mg/dL. That's a significant improvement — and it didn't require any changes to diet. Dr. Fisher emphasizes that these changes happened independently of calorie restriction or food tracking. Amy and Dr. Fisher explain that the cholesterol-lowering effects of strength training were consistent, whether people trained once, twice, or three times a week. Frequency mattered less than simply doing the work. Dr. Fisher breaks down one individual study in the meta-analysis that used six months of full-body strength training. The results showed reduced fat mass, decreased LDL, and increased HDL — all strong markers of better metabolic health. The cholesterol improvements were not just a side effect of losing weight or fat. The act of strength training alone led to these changes, regardless of body composition. Amy challenges the common belief that cholesterol is only affected by food or medication. The data shows strength training is a powerful, underused tool to shift your numbers naturally. Learn how strength training offers more than just physical benefits — it's also a stress reliever. Pushing through a high-effort workout helps unload mental baggage, too. Amy and Dr. Fisher explore how dietary choices still matter — and discuss how eggs, red meat, and even wine influence cholesterol levels. They encourage variety and moderation over strict elimination. Dr. Fisher advises people to “eat the rainbow,” meaning to include colorful, nutrient-dense foods in your diet. He cautions that many Western diets are too dominated by fried and processed foods — and lack the diversity our bodies need. Amy and Dr. Fisher conclude that combining smart dietary choices with consistent strength training may be one of the most effective ways to lower cholesterol naturally. Ever wonder why we take on debt knowing it will cost us — or why flashing a credit card can feel like flashing status? It's not just poor math or bad habits. It's biology, psychology, and marketing, all tangled together. In today's episode, we unpack the psychology of spending with Wright State University professor and author John Dinsmore, whose new book The Marketing of Debt: How They Get You breaks down the subtle — and not-so-subtle — ways marketers capitalize on our optimism, impulsivity, and desire for status. We talk about:Why your brain underestimates the pain of future debtHow credit card companies brand products to play on our egosWhy handling money can make us less generousThe hidden costs of “quiet luxury” and keeping up appearancesAnd how Dinsmore's own research found that just touching $20 bills increased testosterone and reduced charitable givingThis episode is a replay. What Happens When We Die? Find out in our interview with Dr. Jeffrey Long! Dr. Jeffrey Long, renowned radiation oncologist and founder of the Near-Death Experience Research Foundation (NDERF), shares his jaw-dropping insights into the science of NDEs, consciousness, and the afterlife. Drawing from over 5,000 verified near-death experiences, he presents the most compelling scientific and spiritual evidence that your consciousness may exist after life independent of the brain. From documented out of body experiences under anesthesia to cases where blind individuals describe vivid visuals and the deaf report hearing, Dr. Long dismantles mainstream scientific objections with hard data, like low oxygen, seizures, or residual brain activity. He explores the profound themes of life after death, spirituality, and God and reveals how people across cultures describe encounters with heaven, hell, or divine beings through deeply personal spiritual and often Christian lenses. This fascinating interview touches on the philosophical and religious implications of near-death states, including the idea of a pre-birth plan, and life reviews. Plus he explains the lasting aftereffects of NDEs, from extrasensory perception to sudden shifts in religion, values, or purpose. Dr. Long also unpacks how near-death experiences differ from dreams or psychedelic trips, and why they're often described as “more real than life.” Whether you approach this from the lens of Christianity, science, philosophy, or open-minded curiosity, this conversation offers something for skeptics and believers alike. It's a soul-stirring podcast that will transform how you think about life, death, and the possibilities of what comes after. The great sages of ancient India understood the stories of Krishna to be far more than charming children's tales. Through the sophisticated lens of the Sanskrit science of drama, they revealed just how richly structured and deeply meaningful these pastimes are — spiritual dramas designed to awaken devotion and evoke profound yogic experience. This episode explores how spiritual life must be alive and nourished with emotion. As Abraham Joshua Heschel observed, when faith is replaced by creed, worship by discipline, love by habit — and when religion speaks in the name of authority rather than with a voice of compassion — its message becomes meaningless. Krishna's pastimes restore that life and compassion, stirring joy, longing, fear, and relief in the hearts of the residents of Vṛndāvana, and awakening the same divine emotions within us.
