Seed costs remain one of the largest line items on a farm's balance sheet—but what if there was another way to think about genetics, pricing, and value? In this episode of the Farm4Profit Podcast, we sit down with Nate Belcher, a crop consultant, regenerative ag specialist, and longtime advocate for alternative ag business models. Nate shares his perspective on off-patent corn genetics, non-GMO seed options, and why more farmers are questioning the traditional seed system. We discuss:Nate's background as a crop consultant and regenerative ag specialistWhy off-patent genetics are gaining traction with cost-conscious farmersHow non-GMO corn fits into modern cropping systemsThe economics behind seed pricing once royalties and licensing fees are removedWhy many smaller seed companies are moving toward proven, off-patent traitsAdvantages for farmers: lower costs, reduced financial risk, faster access to geneticsTrade-offs farmers should understand, including fewer trials and older geneticsHow direct-to-farm distribution works without dealers or regional repsWhether this model represents a niche option—or a broader shift in the seed industryThis conversation isn't about selling seed—it's about understanding the economics, the risks, and the opportunities farmers face as the seed industry continues to evolve.https://hybrid85.com/about-us Want Farm4Profit Merch? Full Show Notes: https://bengreenfieldlife.com/article/newsletter-1 Writing a book is a lot like childbirth—exhausting, and not something you rush back into the moment it’s over. I’ve never given birth, but I have written several books—and after finishing Boundless, I wasn’t too eager to jump straight into that process again. Until recently. There are just too many health myths wasting your time, energy, and attention—especially around supplements, cold and heat exposure, sleep, fasting, seed oils, red meat, carbohydrates, psychedelics, biohacking, and the modern obsession with living forever. So over the coming months, I’m going to tackle these types of topics through a weekly newsletter, article, and video series, which will eventually be crafted into my next book. If something resonates, let me know. If something falls flat, tell me. And if there’s a topic that deserves a deeper dive, point me there. Head to https://bengreenfieldlife.com/article/newsletter-1/ for today’s article, and drop any other feedback in the comments, including topics you think I should address in the book!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our monthly Seed Chat at SeedChat.orgIn This Podcast: Greg Peterson and Bill McDorman explore the idea of the seed commons—seeds as shared cultural, ecological, and community wealth rather than private commodities. They discuss how market-driven seed systems have eroded biodiversity and why community-based models are essential for resilience in the face of climate, economic, and social uncertainty. Through stories, examples, and lived experience, they show how seed co-ops, exchanges, libraries, and grassroots experimentation restore abundance, adaptability, and human connection. The conversation frames seed saving as both a practical survival skill and a deeply human act of stewardship.Key Topics & EntitiesSeed commonsShared wealthBiodiversity lossClimate change adaptationSeed co-opsAppalachian SeedsSnake River Seed CooperativeSeed exchangesSeed librariesSeed Library NetworkSeeds in CommonOpen-pollinated seedsIndigenous and community seed stewardshipWhat does it mean to treat seeds as part of the commons?Seeds are framed as shared wealth—like air or water—meant to circulate freely so they can keep adapting, carrying cultural memory, and supporting future generations rather than being locked behind patents or profit motives. Why is the current market-based seed system failing biodiversity?Large-scale commercial systems prioritize uniformity and profit, leading to the extinction of many traditional varieties and reducing the genetic diversity needed to adapt to climate and ecological change. How do seed co-ops work in practice?Regional growers collaborate to grow, clean, package, and distribute seeds together, sharing labor and profits while keeping ownership local and ensuring regionally adapted varieties remain available. What role do seed exchanges and seed libraries play in communities? They provide accessible, low-cost ways for people to share seeds, stories, and growing knowledge, strengthening trust, local resilience, and intergenerational learning. What is unique about the Seeds in Common model?Instead of preserving varieties separately, Seeds in Common mixes many varieties together and distributes them widely, prioritizing real-world adaptation and survival over strict categorization or commercial naming. Can individuals really name and steward new plant varieties?Yes—historically, many important crops came from backyard growers. Naming and caring for a variety is an act of responsibility, not ownership, rooted in long-term stewardship rather than profit.Episode HighlightsSeeds as shared wealth are essential for resilience, adaptability, and cultural continuity.Seed co-ops like Appalachian Seeds and Snake River Seed Cooperative keep control local and varieties alive.Seed exchanges offer efficient, story-rich ways to share seeds and knowledge within communities.Seed libraries have rapidly grown worldwide, each shaped by local values and creativity.Mixing and growing diverse seeds reveals what truly works under local, low-input conditions.Naming and saving seeds is a deeply human tradition that predates modern agriculture.Abundance thinking emerges naturally when people engage directly with growing and saving seed.Calls to Action & ResourcesJoin live Seed Chats — https://seedchat.orgExplore regional seed co-ops —

In this episode of SUPERWOMEN, Rebecca sits down with Ara Katz, co-founder of Seed, to talk about ambition, loss, and the moments that quietly redirect your life. The episode closes with thoughts on Saigon's album at (1:00:51) and why a DITC compilation would be difficult to assemble at (1:11:01). Ben Johnson played his starters in the last regular season game in an effort to clinch the number two seed in the NFC playoffs and enter the postseason on a winning note. Fortunately, the Eagles lost their game and the Bears backed into the second seed. It's Bears and Packers at Soldier Field in the wildcard round. Greg Gabriel reviews the Bears loss and previews the playoffs.

The highly anticipated winner-take-all Week 18 between the 49ers and Seahawks didn't quite live up to the hype. Seattle's defense stifled San Francisco's offense, as the Seahawks pulled out a 13-3 win to secure the NFC West title and the conference's No. 1 seed, while the 49ers now have a more difficult postseason path on the road. On this episode of "49ers Talk," co-hosts Matt Maiocco and Jennifer Lee Chan discuss how the Seahawks thoroughly outplayed the 49ers from their potent rushing attack to their unrelenting pressure on the defensive line. Matt and Jennifer also discuss some silver-linings as the 49ers hit the road for the NFL playoffs and how some scenarios are more favorable than others.--(0:00) Week 18 regular-season finale didn't live up to the hype(1:30) Recalling last time 49ers scored three points or fewer(6:00) Purdy pressured by Seattle's D-line all night(7:30) 49ers looked slow and for good reason, playing third game in 13 days(11:00) Missed tackles were a huge issue for the 49ers in loss(16:00) Greg Papa, the voice of the 49ers, returns to radio booth(18:00) 49ers now must make improbable run during playoffs(20:00) Looking ahead to 49ers' possible first-round playoff opponents(25:00) 49ers' don't have much margin for error, but goal still attainable Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. In 1971, a red-headed, tree-loving astronaut named Stu ‘Smokey' Roosa was asked to take something to the moon with him. Of all things, he chose to take a canister of 500 tree seeds. After orbiting the moon 34 times, the seeds made it back to Earth. NASA decided to plant the seeds all across the country and then… everyone forgot about them. Until one day, a third grader from Indiana stumbled on a tree with a strange plaque: "Moon Tree." This discovery set off a cascading search for all the trees that visited the moon across the United States. Science writer, and our very own factchecker, Natalie Middleton (https://www.nataliemiddleton.org/) tells us the tale.Read Lulu's remembrance of Alice Wong for Transom.org: 13 questions I'll never get to ask Alice Wong (https://transom.org/2025/13-questions-ill-never-get-to-ask-alice-wong/).
