We all have places in our lives that feel dry, stuck, or long gone—marriages running on fumes, faith that's cooled off, habits we can't break, or a heart that feels more numb than alive. Most of us try harder, push more, or attempt to “fix” ourselves, but Ezekiel shows us something deeper: the problem isn't that we're weak—it's that we're spiritually dead without God's Spirit. And dead things don't need advice; they need resurrection. Tune in as we walk into the valley with Ezekiel and discover how God uses His Word and His Spirit to rebuild what's broken, breathe life where hope has collapsed, and raise us into the people He created us to be. If you've ever wondered whether the dry places in your story can live again, this is your invitation to find out.

For this second week of Advent we're reading Ezekiel 37:1–14, Ezekiel's famous vision of a valley of dry bones. We wonder why God asks Ezekiel whether he thinks the bones can live and why on earth he instructs Ezekiel to prophesy directly to the bones, kind of a ridiculous prophetic task. But as the bones come together with new sinews and new flesh, we recognize the importance of a prophet who can speak hope to the hopeless and restoration to a community in despair. We also notice that the breath that animates these restored bones comes not directly from God but from the four winds reminding us that we need to be open to the enspiriting breath of the world around us, from which our own renewal may come.

TODAY'S DEVOTION: TODAY'S DEVOTION: People have the wrong impression about God. And God is going to correct that. When people see the suffering and hardship of God's people, they have the mistaken impression that God isn't good or that he's not powerful enough to help them when they really need it. They're wrong about that. They have the wrong impression. But God's going to help us all see, like he helped Ezekiel see. It's a vision in a valley of dry, dismembered, dead, lifeless bones, skeletons littering the valley. God desires to correct our wrong impression by impressing us with this amazing vision. For at his word, God resurrects these bones into living, breathing bodies. He restores them to life. And God is clear that it's not because they deserve it, but because he wants them and us to have the right impression of him. He wants us and the whole world to know what he's truly like. He's like David, Ezekiel tells us, a good shepherd and a loving and powerful king. But he's far better than David. It's important that we have the right impression. He is the one who was raised from the dead. He is the one who offers all of us dead, lifeless people resurrection, life. When we look at him, we get the right impression. We understand fully what God is truly like. We see what God is offering us through his Son. He offers us life, hope, joy, love—the life we've always wanted, a life we didn't earn, but one that we have received. This is what can happen if we get the right impression. May God impress you today with who he is and who you have become. He is the resurrection and the life, and this is what he has done. He has resurrected and given life to the dead. First Corinthians 15 says, "For as in Adam, all die, even so, in Christ all shall be made alive." God has breathed life into the sons and daughters of Adam. This is God's vision. This is what God was up to in Christ. This is what he has finished and completed. This is the impression God wants us to see and understand. And it's all a gift from the God of love. May God open our eyes to see him, what he's done, and what we have become. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. After prayer, they in fact did and as I watched, the man kept breathing and soon revived and has now been alive nearly five years since that day, living a vibrant second chance at life! Through His Word and His Spirit, God builds His great army by reviving people who are dead in sin.

In the Book of Ezekiel, God takes the prophet Ezekiel into a valley filled with dry, dusty bones of things that have been dead for a long time, and then asks Ezekiel, “Can these bones live?” Ezekiel stammers back, “Only you know, Sovereign Lord.” Which is the correct answer. Sure, God *can* do anything He wants, but will He? Will He bring bones back to life? Only God knows. This story rings true, even for us today in our own valley. Everyone knows that the Bay Area is one of the most irreligious and unchurched areas not only in the United States, but the world. And it can seem rather hopeless at times. And in a valley filled with wealth, but in short supply of hope, filled with innovation, but in such short supply of wisdom and righteousness, can God bring even this valley back to life? Only God knows. And although we have no control over what He does or does not do - but we can take small steps to prepare our own hearts for God's presence in hopes our renewal might spark something - not just in us, but in those around us.
