Sam and Emma host Carl Lindskoog, assistant professor of history at Raritan Valley Community College, to discuss his recent book Detain and Punish: Haitian Refugees and the World's Largest Immigration Detention System, to discuss his recent book Detain and Punish: Haitian Refugees and the World's Largest Immigration Detention System, on how the US's treatment of Haitian refugees worked as the blueprint for their immigration detention system today. Professor Lindskoog starts back in the ‘50s, around two decades into a period of intensely discriminatory immigration policy, banning immigration from practically anywhere that isn't in western Europe, when the US decides to suspect their policy of immigrant detention, building up to the 1965 decision to do away with their national origin quotas in the midsts of the Civil Rights Movement. Next, however, he covers the racist backlash to both the movement as a whole and these immigration policies as, beginning in the ‘70s, the US saw an influx in Haitian migrants that worried representatives (unlike anti-communist Cuban migrants who bolstered the US image of Cuba), spilling over in the summer of 1980, as the US responds by reasserting immigrant detention, building up their private-prison complex as they start incarcerating more and more folks, both foreign and native-born. He, Sam, and Emma dive into the policy of the Reagan administration that worked to bolster this, including quarantining and expelling Haitian refugees with HIV/AIDS, followed by George H.W. Bush's opening of the Guantanamo detention center, originally just for Haitian refugees, before touching on the neoliberal responses under Clinton, as he reinstalled President Aristide following a military coup under the requirement of subscription to neoliberal policy, and Obama, as he upheld detentions – save for a short period following the 2010 Earthquake. They wrap up the interview with a discussion on the history of organizing and direct action by Haitian refugees in jails and detention centers, before touching on Biden's failure to make our current immigration system even more slightly humane. Sam and Emma host Kate Crawford, Research Professor at the University of Southern California Annenberg, to discuss her recent book Atlas of AI: Power, Politics, and the Planetary Costs of Artificial Intelligence, on our relationship with big tech, and the concept of the AI industry as a continuation of the extractive practices and power dynamics in the workplace that we have been building for centuries. They start off with a discussion on how Professor Crawford got into AI, and how her perspective on it has changed, from the view of the industry as one defined by algorithmic capacity and data infrastructure to an industry of extraction and exploitation, jump-started by diving into the stages of production from lithium mines to Amazon fulfillment warehouses to labs. Getting into the abstraction and depoliticization of artificial intelligence, Professor Crawford explores how Big Tech has become perhaps the most concentrated industry since the railroads, hiding behind an ideology of technocratic utopianism that has built a fear of regulation, a consolidation of power, and a growing perspective that it is essential to our way of life. Next, she, Emma, and Sam dive into the relationship between AI and labor practices, looking at the hyper “efficiency” created by workplace algorithms (e.g. at Amazon warehouses) as a revolutionary progression of Frederick Taylor's factory ideology, and exploring how this disembodied management serves to hamper organizing, particularly with the effect of the bias to believe technology. They then move onto the importance of highlighting the overlap of the surveillance state and corporate surveillance, this creation of a multi-headed hydra, and why the American public only sees the state as a threat, before expanding on the surveillance apparatus are already working to reinforce power structures that have exceeded regulation, looking particularly at the Police state and counter-terrorism measures. They wrap up the interview by discussing the future of regulation in the industry and the impact anti-trust measures could have (and why that won't be enough). Sam and Emma read some Majority Reporter updates on the mass unionization efforts going on in the US, and discuss Manchin's posturing with Bernie (physically). HOUR 1 Arthritis- How to Supplement for Symptom Relief -- Carolyn Dean MD ND  According to RheumatoidArthritis.net, arthritis affects more than 46 million people resulting in disability for 19 million. Arthritis causes more disability than heart disease, diabetes, and back or spine problems. Osteoarthritis (prevalence ~26.9 million), gout (prevalence ~6.1 million), rheumatoid arthritis (prevalence ~1.3 million) in the US. Note: For example, a person who is newly diagnosed with arthritis is an incident case, whereas a person living with arthritis for 10 years is a prevalent case.  Arthritis means inflammation of the joints. It is a very complex and multifaceted disease. A diagnosis of arthritis is made by analyzing X-rays, blood tests, and findings on a clinical examination. The most common finding is wear and tear on the joints and loss of the supporting padding around and between joints.   You can develop joint symptoms due to toxicity from processed foods, sugar, gluten, alcohol, coffee, or food to which you are allergic. These toxins can gather in vulnerable, overworked joints or in areas where you have suffered an injury. The only way to find out if these substances are causing problems is to eliminate them from your diet and see if your joints feel better. An overlooked cause is a subclinical infection that targets the joints. Chinese Medicine addresses this issue and says the Divergent Meridians will direct an internal infection toward the joints to protect the internal organs.  The medical treatment of arthritis merely suppresses pain and inflammation with stronger and stronger prescription medication without understanding that those drugs will cause more inflammation as they build toxicity and drain the body of magnesium and other minerals.   Historically, the first drug used to treat arthritis and hailed as a miracle cure was cortisone. It wasn't long before the horrible side effects of bleeding ulcers, suppression of adrenal gland function and thinning bones turned the miracle into a disaster. Suppression of the adrenal glands begins in as little as 7 days on drugs like prednisone.  A series of NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) that claimed to be safer than cortisone were also associated with bleeding ulcers. A newer generation of NSAIDs – Vioxx, Celebrex and Bextra – came under extreme fire in 2005 when Vioxx was shown to cause about 140,000 heart attacks – many fatal. I say that the reason these drugs cause heart side effects is because they deplete the body of magnesium. Ironically, magnesium is the best anti-inflammatory agent you can take for arthritis. Celebrex contains fluoride molecules that can account for its higher rate of heart disease side effects. Fluoride binds magnesium making it unavailable to the body. The resulting MgF2 compound is brittle and deposits in bone, joints, cartilage and tendons creating or increasing symptoms of arthritis. Now we have an absolute epidemic of opioid addiction from the flagrant use of this highly addictive drug. Add to that the addition of the poisonous drug fentanyl to street drug opioids and you have killer combination.  Menopausal women often develop arthritic symptoms. Does cessation of the monthly period, which serves to rid the body of toxins, mean that, instead, the toxins are building up in the joints? The same might be said for iron build-up and high levels of hemoglobin; some researchers believe that women escape heart disease because their blood is not as high in iron and as thick as men's blood. Because women lose blood every month, there is less strain on the heart. Donating blood at the local blood bank can be a sure way to thin out your blood and also stimulate the production of a fresh crop of red blood cells. Arthritis causes more disability than heart disease, diabetes, and back or spine problems. Osteoarthritis (prevalence ~26.9 million), gout (prevalence ~6.1 million), rheumatoid arthritis (prevalence ~1.3 million) in the US. Note: For example, a person who is newly diagnosed with arthritis is an incident case, whereas a person living with arthritis for 10 years is a prevalent case.  Arthritis means inflammation of the joints. It is a very complex and multifaceted disease. A diagnosis of arthritis is made by analyzing X-rays, blood tests, and findings on a clinical examination. The most common finding is wear and tear on the joints and loss of the supporting padding around and between joints.   You can develop joint symptoms due to toxicity from processed foods, sugar, gluten, alcohol, coffee, or food to which you are allergic. These toxins can gather in vulnerable, overworked joints or in areas where you have suffered an injury. The only way to find out if these substances are causing problems is to eliminate them from your diet and see if your joints feel better. An overlooked cause is a subclinical infection that targets the joints. Chinese Medicine addresses this issue and says the Divergent Meridians will direct an internal infection toward the joints to protect the internal organs.  The medical treatment of arthritis merely suppresses pain and inflammation with stronger and stronger prescription medication without understanding that those drugs will cause more inflammation as they build toxicity and drain the body of magnesium and other minerals.   Historically, the first drug used to treat arthritis and hailed as a miracle cure was cortisone. It wasn't long before the horrible side effects of bleeding ulcers, suppression of adrenal gland function and thinning bones turned the miracle into a disaster. Suppression of the adrenal glands begins in as little as 7 days on drugs like prednisone.  A series of NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) that claimed to be safer than cortisone were also associated with bleeding ulcers. A newer generation of NSAIDs – Vioxx, Celebrex and Bextra – came under extreme fire in 2005 when Vioxx was shown to cause about 140,000 heart attacks – many fatal. I say that the reason these drugs cause heart side effects is because they deplete the body of magnesium. Ironically, magnesium is the best anti-inflammatory agent you can take for arthritis. Celebrex contains fluoride molecules that can account for its higher rate of heart disease side effects. Fluoride binds magnesium making it unavailable to the body. The resulting MgF2 compound is brittle and deposits in bone, joints, cartilage and tendons creating or increasing symptoms of arthritis. Now we have an absolute epidemic of opioid addiction from the flagrant use of this highly addictive drug. Add to that the addition of the poisonous drug fentanyl to street drug opioids and you have killer combination.  Menopausal women often develop arthritic symptoms. Does cessation of the monthly period, which serves to rid the body of toxins, mean that, instead, the toxins are building up in the joints? The same might be said for iron build-up and high levels of hemoglobin; some researchers believe that women escape heart disease because their blood is not as high in iron and as thick as men's blood. Because women lose blood every month, there is less strain on the heart. Donating blood at the local blood bank can be a sure way to thin out your blood and also stimulate the production of a fresh crop of red blood cells. Food, water, and air are the biggest human consumption variables on a daily basis when it comes to our health. The quality of those ingredients matters to our overall outcome. If you're on an elimination diet for longer than three months, you begin to create your own dysbiosis in the microbiome. Taking out complex carbohydrates from your diet can create more food sensitivities, more food reactions, and less oral tolerance over time. The specific carbohydrate diet is a version of a FODMAP style diet where you're not eating anything processed out of a wrapper or package. It's a whole food diet where you're cutting out as many complex carbohydrates as you can. Action Steps: Consider going on the specific carbohydrate diet. Eliminate the foods that are giving you problems and attempt to reintroduce them as quickly as possible. If you're having an IBD flare, start with the intro diet along with the specific carbohydrate diet. This means eating all cooked meats, fruits, and vegetables and nothing raw.  Support your body with all the mechanical needs it might be missing at the moment to break down foods. If you want to protect your gut, eat a lot of fermented foods, say a gratitude prayer before you eat, slow down, and try to eat a wide range of foods. Find a supplement that's going to cover your pancreatic enzymes, your brush border enzymes, and microbiome enzymes all in the same capsule. You also want to try to find something with minerals added to it. Take enzymes with your meals and before bed. Also, don't be afraid to experiment with your enzyme dosages. If you're in a bad place, like if you're someone who has refractory IBD or you're headed into the hospital, one of the coolest things you can do is give your gut a break by doing a 24- or 36- or 48-hour water fast.   Steven said: “The hope... is that if you supplement with [HCl] long enough and you rebuild the natural processes, you reabsorb all your minerals, and you kind of train your stomach how to work, you will end up usually coming off of HCl.” “The systemic part of enzymes can not be understated, and I think it's one of the most underrated anti-aging tools... Here you'll learn more strategies to support your insulin and blood sugar levels, as well as take a closer look at how glucose impacts your mood, sleep, cycle, and energy. How exercise and movement impact your glucose Why sleep is critical to glucose regulation and overall metabolic health Stress management techniques  Key Takeaways: A study has shown that when about one ounce of white vinegar was consumed with a carbohydrate-rich meal, post-meal glucose spikes and insulin levels were significantly lower. Apple cider vinegar is not only great for digestion but also for supporting post-meal glucose. According to one study, a single session of exercise at even a mild intensity has the ability to significantly increase insulin sensitivity the very next day. A large body of research also shows that moderate aerobic exercise 30 minutes, three times a week over an eight-week period improves insulin resistance and glycaemic control, including your fasting glucose levels. Similarly, high-intensity training improves both fasting glucose and insulin sensitivity in as short as two weeks. The more muscle mass that you can build, it's going to support how your body uptakes glucose. A short stint of sleep deprivation can send the body into a pathological metabolic state. The good news is that this is reversible. All you need to do is improve your sleep duration for two days. Stress raises our glucose levels. Studies have shown a significant correlation between perceived work-related stress and increased levels of circulating glucose. Cinnamon is a delicious and effective way to blunt some of those glucose surges.   Action Steps: Implement these strategies: Use vinegar to support your glucose. Take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar 10 to 15 minutes before you eat your meal, or mix it with a little bit of warm water and drink it first thing in the morning. Exercise and incorporate movement. Prioritize sleep. You need to sleep at least 7 to 9 hours per night to have healthy and proper glucose regulation. Control your stress. Practice stress management techniques such as deep diaphragmatic breathing for 20 minutes a day and twice-weekly meditation. Sprinkle cinnamon on your meals.   Samantha said: “If you feel like you're having a bit of this resistance with working out and exercise, that could be one way to reframe it. You're doing this because you love yourself. Fall weather is (finally) here! The mornings are crisp and cozy and there is a good chance you are craving all the fall comfort foods and some hearty meals! Eating seasonally may seem like the basic, trendy thing to do— #pumpkineverything — but there are actually a lot of benefits to eating seasonally!    Shifting your menu with the season allows for food choices that are fresher, more flavorful, and often more nutrient dense than foods that are out of season. Foods that are picked and eaten in season are harvested at the peak of their nutrient density. It also shakes up your typical menu items and can stimulate new ideas for recipes and weekly meal preps. Not only does this spike new interests in the kitchen, it also increase the diversity of your intake which is stellar for your microbiome.   What is in season right now?   Apples Beets Carrots Cauliflower  Citrus fruits Green beans Kale Pumpkin Winter Squash  Sweet Potatoes    Some notable nutrients in these seasonal treats are vitamin A and C.    Vitamin A— This micronutrient star can be found in carrots, kale, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and winter squash. It is vital for healthy vision, reproduction, cellular communication and immune function.    Vitamin C — This micronutrient can be found in plenty in citrus fruits, cauliflower, sweet potatoes and parsnips. It is crucial for a strong immune system and plays a role in muscle damage repair and skin vitality.  Specifically, Vitamin C is required for the biosynthesis of collagen, L-carnitine, and certain neurotransmitters. It is a powerful antioxidant and can even regenerate other antioxidants in the body including vitamin E!   My Number one favorite soup: Pumpkin Quinoa Chili    Here is the recipe for you!    1 diced onion and 3-4 garlic cloves sautéed in 2 tbsp avocado oil 2 cups pumpkin puree (make your own if you are feeling adventurous and looking for a super strong antioxidant punch)  2 cans kidney beans 2 cans black beans 2 cups pureed fresh tomatoes (blend in a food processor)  3 cups veggie broth  2 diced zucchini  1 cup quinoa (uncooked)  2.5 Tbsp chili powder  1 Tbsp cumin  1 tsp chipotle Salt and pepper to taste  Bring to a boil, then cook on low for 25 minutes.      Cheers and happy (fall) eating!   Jess

Sam and Emma host Ada Ferrer, Professor of History and Latin American and Caribbean Studies at New York University, to discuss her recent book Cuba: An American History, on how the constant pressure of American Imperialism has threatened the people and territory since its independence. They jump off from this question of why she dubs her work “An American History,” and how it works to trace the development of Cuba since early colonialism, particularly focusing on moments of increased intervention, from the boom in the slave trade on the island following the Haitian Revolution to the early founding fathers' desire to acquire it and the industries they could exploit. Moving into the mid-1800s, Professor Ferrer, Emma, and Sam look at the role of Cuban independence, which, despite its leaders seeing it as a check on American expansion, US officials attempted to claim affiliation with it, once again in hopes of exploiting the sugar and slave industries on the island, until the Civil War saw an end to much of that spirit. Exploring the transition into the 20th Century and an independent Cuba, Sam, Emma, and Ada dive into the Platt Amendment and how it cemented US intervention in Cuba whenever legislators saw fit, despite intense anti-imperialism and socialist views on the island, resulting in a variety of different periods of occupation culminating in another revolution to overthrow the Machado regime, and the democratic election of Batista, who, himself, would fall into a dictatorship bolstered by the US. Finally bubbling over with Castro's revolution, they cover how finally grasping true independence allowed for incredible development in social programs and general infrastructure, before they explore the effects of the 1990s economic crash in Cuba and the state of the cultural ongoings today. Sam and Emma also cover the wild week we could have in Congress with impending decisions on the debt ceiling, bipartisan bill, and reconciliation all likely to occur with the looming threat of a government shutdown. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma run through the various potential outcomes of the legislative agenda for this week, and how progressives can bolster their leverage and ensure the progression of their reconciliation bill. As the Chicago Tribune observes: “Collagen and its amino acids are essential to healing because they build tissues such as skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, blood vessels, bones and more. Antioxidants remove the harmful free radicals from the bloodstream that can impair the immune system, and vitamins and minerals play specialized roles in healing.” Chronic stress can make you more susceptible to colds and the flu, as well as more serious health problems like heart disease, diabetes and other diseases. By practicing stress-reducing activities like yoga, meditation and laughter, you can keep your body from going into chronic stress mode. INGREDIENTS in Immunity3 Organic Camu Camu Camu camu (Myrciaria dubia) is a berry native to the Amazon rainforest. That sounds remote, but this so-called superfood has long been used to improve health and has become increasingly popular. Camu camu's purported health benefits include reducing the risk of chronic diseases thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Similar to tart cranberries, the camu camu berry is too acidic for most people to enjoy its natural state. It's generally processed as an ingredient in blended juices or freeze-dried into a powder that can be taken as a supplement, added to smoothies, or blended into other foods.   Camu Camu is High in Vitamin C Nutritionally, camu camu is one of the most concentrated natural food sources of vitamin C. Camu camu is rich in vitamin C, a vitamin that acts as a powerful antioxidant in your body and is vital for the health of your skin and immune system. The fruit's pulp provides about 2,400 to 3,000 grams (or 2,400,000 milligrams) per 3.5-ounce or so serving. For context, the recommended dietary intake (RDI) for vitamin C is 60 milligrams a day. Because of its high vitamin C content, camu camu is also rich in antioxidants, which have anti-inflammatory properties.   Not JUST Vitamin C Beyond vitamin C, camu camu provides smaller amounts of potassium, calcium, zinc, magnesium, manganese, and copper. Like most colorful berries, camu camu is a good source of polyphenols. Camu camu also has antimicrobial properties, and researchers have identified compounds in the fruit that have strong antimicrobial benefits.   Supports Gut Health The dense punch of nutrients from camu can also support gut health and block free radicals and other pathogens from entering the body, according to studies, thus providing protection against bacterial infections, viruses and other issues. Remember your immunity is built in the gut! Additionally, a 2018 animal study even found that camu may help prevent obesity by positively altering the gut microbiota (highly tied to immune function) and by increasing energy expenditure. Several studies found that camu could leadto lowered fat accumulation and blunted metabolic inflammation, leading to improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity.   Improves Liver Health As a powerful cocktail of antioxidants and phytochemicals, camu camu benefits the liver in several ways. The high vitamin C content is especially central to its ability to improve liver health. Research in 2010 showed that animals given camu camu powder showed significant signs of liver injury suppression. Specifically, an active compound called 1-methylmalate was isolated from Myrciaria dubia This study concluded that the 1-methylmalate in camu is one of the reasons why it can aid liver health.   Enhances Mood Camu camu berries' high levels of vitamin C may help your brain to produce more serotonin, which will enhance your mood — which explains why it may act as a potential remedy for depression. In fact, research suggests people who have a deficiency in vitamin C often feel more depressed and lackadaisical. Vitamin C is an important cofactor required for the conversion of tryptophan to 5-hydroxytryptophan in serotonin production. It's therefore possible that vitamin C from camu camu benefits patients with depression that is associated with low levels of serotonin. For example, in one study conducted at Montreal's Jewish General Hospital, it was shown that many of the patients who had decreased levels of vitamin C reported signs of sluggishness and depression. When given doses of vitamin C, they all responded with rapid and clinically significant improvement in mood. There is some concern that camu camu can interfere with some chemotherapy medications—you should always let your doctor know about the supplements you are taking, but especially so if you are receiving chemo, for example.   Zinc Your immune system is your first line of defense against all disease, especially infectious disease, and there are many different ways to boost your immune system and improve its function. One nutrient that plays a very important role in your immune system's ability to ward off viral infections is zinc. Zinc is also a nutrient that plays many vital roles in your body. BUT…Because your body doesn't naturally produce zinc, you must obtain it through food or supplements. zinc is the second-most-abundant trace mineral in your body — after iron — and is present in every cell it's critical for the development and function of immune cells fundamental to skin health, DNA synthesis and protein production body growth and development relies on zinc because of its role in cell growth and division Zinc is also needed for your senses of taste and smell. Because one of the enzymes crucial for proper taste and smell is dependent on this nutrient, a zinc deficiency can reduce your ability to taste or smell Zinc lozenges were found to shorten the duration of common cold episodes by up to 40 percent in a study published in the Open Respiratory Medicine Journal. Those at risk of zinc deficiency include: People with gastrointestinal diseases like Crohn's disease Vegetarians and vegans Pregnant and breastfeeding women Older infants who are exclusively breastfed People with sickle cell anemia People who are malnourished, including those with anorexia or bulimia People with chronic kidney disease Those who abuse alcohol   Elderberry Elderberry is one of the most commonly used medicinal plants in the world. Traditionally, Native Americans used it to treat infections, while the ancient Egyptians used it to improve their complexions and heal burns. It's still gathered and used in folk medicine across many parts of Europe. Elderberry refers to several varieties of the Sambucustree, which has clusters of white flowers and black or blue-black berries. The most common variety is Sambucus nigra, also known as European elderberry or black elderberry. Today, elderberry is most often taken as a supplement to treat cold and flu symptoms.   Health Benefits of Elderberry There are many reported benefits of elderberries. Not only are they nutritious, but they may also fight cold and flu symptoms, support heart health and fight inflammation and infections, among other benefits. May improve cold and flu symptoms One study of 60 people with influenza found that those who took 15 ml of elderberry syrup four times per day showed symptom improvement in two to four days, while the control group took seven to eight days to improve. Another study of 64 people found that taking 175-mg elderberry extract lozenges for two days resulted in significant improvement in flu symptoms, including fever, headache, muscle aches and nasal congestion, after just 24 hours. Furthermore, a study of 312 air travelers taking capsules containing 300 mg of elderberry extract three times per day found that those who got sick experienced a shorter duration of illness and less severe symptoms. High In Antioxidants Antioxidants are natural components of foods, including some vitamins, phenolic acids and flavonoids, that are able to remove these reactive molecules. Research suggests that diets high in antioxidants may help prevent chronic disease Anthocyanins found in the berries have 3.5 times the antioxidant power of vitamin E Studies have shown elderberry juice may reduce the level of fat in the blood and decrease cholesterol. A study found that elderberry flowers inhibit the enzyme α-glucosidase, which may help lower blood sugar levels. Last week we discussed the issues that put people at risk for getting a virus and for not responding to a vaccine.  The third and last section of our series on viruses and vaccines centers on how to boost your immune system so that you are less likely to get a virus, to die from a virus, and more likely to get immunity from a vaccine. There is a great controversy about vaccines right now, but vaccines have changed the modern world from one where we had a very high death rate from communicable diseases and high childhood death rate to one that is generally protected against communicable viruses, where we now only worry about dying from the diseases of old age.  Most vaccines are given a few times in our lives, like MMR (measles mumps and rubella vaccines), usually when we are children and then every 10 years or so, we get a booster.  The flu vaccine is different, and we get a different vaccine every year that is created to kill the permutation of the flu virus we think is going to go around the world this winter.  Doctors recommend those patients who are not allergic to the flu vaccine to get an immunization against the flu every year, because it is a preventable deadly disease, however we rarely tell our patients how to make their vaccine more effective to provide protection (to decrease the likelihood of immunization failure). The necessary elements for a human being to be adequately protected from a virus and by an immunization include: A healthy immune system with adequate numbers of white blood cells of healthy white blood cells. Good Nutrition A normal blood sugar --intake of a lot of sugar containing food and drinks and carbohydrates, or the presence of uncontrolled Diabetes decreases the ability of a person's immune system to function. Viruses LOVE sugar! Young healthy levels of Testosterone. Testosterone stimulates white blood cell production and modulates the activity of the thymus. Testosterone decreases and becomes deficient as we age, and the activity and effectiveness of the immune system parallels the drop of our testosterone levels in both sexes. Daily moderate exercise. Sitting all day slows your immune response and can accelerate the drop in hormones and the number of white blood cells. To stay healthy, you must exercise every day. Control of stress. High stress, and major negative life events (like divorce, loss of family members, money worries, etc.) can cause your hormone, Cortisol from your adrenal gland, to increase over long periods of time. This blunts the effect of White blood cells and decreases your immune function. Taking action to decrease stress with biofeedback, exercise, prayer, or socializing is important to keep your immune function healthy. You can also take a supplement called Endodren Supplement (1 every am) to keep Cortisol from spiking. Good Gut bacteria—feed the gut biome with  probiotics and good basic nutrition including raw veggies and fruit. Your immunity starts in your gut. Replace declining hormones-- Estradiol, testosterone, and thyroid hormones. At BioBalance Health our patients who have been taking T pellets for over a year had a better immune response to viral infections during 2020 and 2021 and their T cells and B cells reacted more aggressively to kill viruses. In addition to the recommendations above we suggest supplementation to your basic nutrition to improve your immune system: Vitamin D 5,000 IU per day is a must and has been proven to lessen the effects of viruses and improve the response to immunizations. Vitamin C 1000 mg/day Zinc 30 mg po q day Quercetin 250 mg/day My doctor-daughter primes my grand-daughter before her immunizations with a form of liquid vitamin C each day for 3 days and the day of her immunization at the pediatrician's office. This improves her chances of obtaining immunity from that one shot. Special Cases require special immunizations and sometimes boosters: There are some diseases and conditions that require additional treatment and prevention for viruses and often special immunizations that have a stronger dose of dead virus to create immunity. Autoimmune diseases: If you take suppressive medications for autoimmune diseases (Biologics) It is very important that you take good care of yourself and try to be as healthy as possible. Diabetes must be kept in control and your blood sugar and insulin within normal limits. AIDS Patients Cancer Patients Patients over 65 yo All chronic diseases If you are a high-risk patient or you can't lower all of your risk factors, then you may want to check to see if your immunization or recent infection gave you immunity.  It will take a blood test to determine your immune status, and to see if you need a booster shot. The current test can be done at Quest and is an IGG and IGM test for a specific virus. It tells you if you have made antibodies to a specific virus or not. You may be checking to see if your immunization worked or if you still have antibodies to an infection that you had, to confirm your immunity. If you are at high risk and can't take an immunization or can't develop immunity after an immunization or infection, then you will have to continue to avoid crowds, wear masks and take supplements to fortify your immune system.  These are my suggestions for all viral illnesses like the flu, covid, pneumonia, shingles and other viruses for which we have immunizations.  I hope this helps you make proper choices about activity, and immunization and that this talk assists you in improving your immunity as much as possible.

Then Sam and Emma are joined by Heather Digby Parton, proprietor of Hullabaloo and contributing writer at Salon.com, to wrap up the week in news. Astra, Sam, and Emma dive into the start of the Occupy movement, ten years ago today, as a response to the call issued by Adbusters and the failure of the US Government to provide any reciprocity or repercussions for the 2008 financial crisis. Astra reflects on the initial general assemblies and working groups that worked to determine why they were there and what their demands should be, as well as the skepticism that they'd last beyond the first night with the mass police presence in NYC. They expand on this discussion, exploring how the role of police brutality served to somewhat bolster the public view around the movement and helped jumpstart the spread of the movement well beyond just NYC or even the US, even serving to turn the political tide against the Clinton neoliberalism. They discuss the diversity of ideology in the movement, even if it was driven by an anti-establishment ethos, and how that served to help create this open and strong picture of the 99%, before wrapping up with how the movement was eventually forced out of Zuccotti Park and looking at the lasting impact on the progressive left Occupy ultimately had. Then Digby comes on to chat about what we have learned from the CA Recall, particularly in terms of boosting turnout by running against Trump no matter the election, and she, Sam, and Emma also cover the role of the centrist Dems within he general infrastructure shenanigans going on in Congress. Nourish your body from the inside out to live a long, happy, and healthy life. Dr. Anna breaks down the science behind longevity and explores the key supplements to promote health and reduce inflammation, how to reduce and avoid the toxins and endocrine disruptors we face everyday in our lives, and why love is the best medicine of all. [0:15] Longevity begins in the womb. What we do for our health matters for generations. In the past episode Dr. Anna talked about a number of different treatments that were meant to help maintain a pregnancy, but instead resulted in a plethora of negative effects generations down the line. [1:05] There are age reversal techniques that everyone can do that can have tremendous genetic and generational positive benefits. [1:40] The healthier we are as a community and with our relationships the longer we live with a high quality of life. Love, laugh, and give is a great mindset to start your day and end your life with. [3:50] Treatments can have generational effects. Endocrine disruptors like Diethylstilbestrol (DES) were touted as a wonderful, universal drug for pregnant mothers but resulted in numerous negative effects. [4:50] Dr. Anna recently attended the Da Vinci 50 conference and Dr. Gregory Church recommended that the FDA should require third generational animal studies before releasing a medication out to the public. Most medications today do not meet that standard. [6:30] Protect yourself from toxic overload and hormone disruptors. In many places, disruptors can even be found in tap water. [7:30] Another key area that affects our longevity is our epigenetics. If you don't have your 23andMe health yet, it can be a good idea to get it. Knowing how well you methylate will determine the best types of supplementation for you. [8:40] You also need to pay attention to toxin exposure. Things like fireproof treated fabric can be absorbed through the skin, and particular GMOs can cause issues. [10:05] Anything with PCBs is considered highly toxic. Dioxin, a byproduct from chloride containment processes, can linger in the environment for years and diminishes the production of thyroid hormones. [10:50] A recent patient came to Dr. Anna with low testosterone. Before dealing with the symptom, it's important to address the cause of the problem. Her approach was to do an endocrine toxicity screen and address the thyroid issues. [12:40] If you're suffering from low testosterone, we have to ask where the testosterone is going. Is it being converted to estrogen? Is it becoming dihydrotestosterone? These could result in either man boobs or hair loss, so it's important to understand what is going on. [13:55] Most of us haven't been aware of the potent complication of endocrine disruptors. We are seeing an overall increase of infertility, early menopause, and early andropause. [14:20] Phthalates are very common in the plastic drinking bottles we use. Avoiding BPAs is also important, which are found in plastics as well as metal food containers. The rule of thumb is to reduce our exposure to toxins as much as possible. [17:30] Off-Gassing of chemicals can also occur in your shower curtain and dry cleaning bag. Switching to a natural fiber shower curtain is an easy, quick fix. [18:00] Even something as innocuous as the receipts you get at the store have BPAs on them. Cashiers should think seriously about using gloves while handling receipts all day. [19:10] Seek out products that have the FDA-certified Organic label. The reverse should be the norm, where foods are labeled as grown with pesticides, but that's the reality we live in. [20:55] Heavy metals are major endocrine disruptors. Mercury from fish, and lead in air pollution, all impact fertility and cause complications in pregnancy. Dr. Anna often tests patients for heavy metals and recommends natural chelators. Vitamin C and certain foods like garlic, ginger, broccoli sprouts, and more help reduce toxic heavy metals in the body. [27:00] Chromosome maintenance and repair will improve all the downstream symptoms. Telomere erosion and genetic errors age us rapidly. Natural aging can be accelerated through life and environmental stresses like smoking, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and inflammation. [27:50] Inflammation accelerates aging universally, from your hair to your skin to your brain cells. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell, and when they are functioning poorly for a number of different reasons, it leads to rapidly declining energy and fatigue. [29:15] Anyone with autoimmune issues is affected by rapid aging. The lower your basal metabolic rate, the more unhealthy you are. [30:30] Glucose regulation is the number one recommendation from experts in longevity. Keeping your glucose levels steady throughout the day with a diet like Keto Green will certainly help. Especially for women going through menopause, a stable blood sugar and a habit of fasting can drastically improve the quality of your life. Dictionary result for collagen /ˈkäləjən/ noun the main structural protein found in skin and other connective tissues, widely used in purified form for cosmetic surgical treatments. “vitamin C plays a vital role in the formation of collagen” Different collagen molecules make up about ⅓ of the total protein in a human body Found in bone, skin, muscles, and tendons The substance that connects cells and gives skin elasticity as well as strength   Collagen and Aging Your body naturally produces collagen every day. After the age of 25, we break down more collagen than we make. Collagen supplements are an easy way to add more collagen to your diet. Collagen has been shown to reduce wrinkles, keep joints strong and flexible, support strong bones, and increase skin hydration.   Why is collagen so good for you? Collagen is vital for maintaining the structure and integrity of your entire body.   #1 – Strong Cartilage and Muscles Cartilage is a type of connective tissue that is made up of collagen When you lack collagen, joint instability, stiffness, and pain can result. Likewise, muscles need cartilage to adhere themselves to the ends of bones. This is why muscle aches are one of the most common complaints of individuals with low collagen levels.   #2 – Healthy Teeth. Collagen is needed to keep teeth in place in the gums. Loose teeth, toothache, sensitive teeth, and even tooth loss can result from a lack of collagen overall.   #3 – Thick Hair Collagen plays an important part in hair growth since it fills in the spaces around each hair follicle. One way to tell if you are collagen deficient is to notice the quality and state of your hair. Dull, thin hair is a sign of low collagen levels. Collagen also helps fight free radicals that can damage hair. #4 – Smooth Skin Wrinkling and cellulite are other unfortunate results of low collagen in the body. Not enough collagen means skin begins to lose elasticity and sag, causing those pesky wrinkles as we age. Cellulite is another telltale sign of low collagen. #5 – Good Gut Health. Collagen helps heal the gut because of its ability to “seal the gut.” Leaky gut has been linked to autoimmune conditions and neurological conditions like autism. Types of Collagens There are over two dozen kinds of collagen, although roughly 85% of the collagen in the body is made up of Type I, II, or III (or a combination of these three types). Type I collagen is the most prevalent type of collagen. It is the substance that makes up the skin, tendons, and bones as well as the structural framework of the organs. It should be your go-to for hair, skin, and nail health, especially for recouping lost collagen stores that occurs naturally as we age. It is also a “well-rounded generalist,” in that it is a good type for supporting overall health. Type I is also found in the digestive tract, which makes it (along with Type II) great for gut healing and repair.   Type II collagen is the structural component of cartilage in the body. Because of this, it is great for the joints and to rebuild cartilage in ligaments, tendons, skin, and bones. Type II collagen contains a variety of specific amino acids that are particularly helpful for the body. The first one, again, is glycine, which is beneficial for brain health and metabolism. The second one is proline, which helps clean artery walls. Type II may also be good for the respiratory system, detoxification pathways, and more because it contains arginine, another amino acid that is vital for nitric oxide production. [Note: Nitric oxide is produced in the body and is beneficial for supporting blood flow and lowering blood pressure.] For the most part, Type II collagen is where you want to turn for joint health and possibly even for arthritis support.   Type III collagen is typically found where ever Type 1 collagen can be found as well as some other unique places. It is housed in what are called reticular fibers, the substances that make up connective tissue. It is also found in the muscles, bone marrow, blood vessels, and reproductive organs such as the uterus. Type III collagen is also crucial for the healthy functioning of the cardiovascular system. Low Type III collagen has been linked to ruptured blood vessels and can be life-threatening.   Type IV collagen helps to strengthen endothelial cells that form the tissue protecting organs as well as muscles and fatty tissue. Endothelial cells also line the majority of the surfaces along the digestive tract and respiratory organs.   Type V collagen helps create the surface of cells while Type X helps with bone formation. Sam and Emma host Samuel Moyn, Professor of History at Yale University, to discuss his recent book Humane: How the United States Abandoned Peace and Reinvented War, on how the evolving face of the American Empire has changed the way we perceive war, and what we can do to get the conversation back on track. Starting all the way back in the mid-19th Century, Professor Moyn dives into the first Geneva Convention and the attempt by the Swiss to make war more humane, as well as the response by some like Leo Tolstoy who worried that it might, in fact, further legitimize war. He, Sam, and Emma then situate the role of America in all of this, jumping off of the massacres of the Vietnam War and the changes both in Geneva law – focused around civilians and collateral damage – and in the perspective of the US military, that it inspired, before moving back to how the two World Wars and transatlantic combat put the US at the warfront of the western empires, locking them into brutal wars to “keep the peace” ever since. Next, they look into why the backlash to the brutalities of Vietnam was so much more severe than that of the war on terror, situating the former within a pre-existing anti-war movement, and then jump into the role of Barack Obama in really cementing the ideology of the “humane” war through public declarations of both the need for constant warfare, and the need for humane warfare. They wrap up the interview with a conversation on the role of technology in bolstering the Rumsfeldian light warfare, and summarize the evolution of, and what we could see next from, the American empire. Emma and Sam also touch on Manchin's mumbling maneuvers to avoid getting too into the numbers of the Infrastructure Package, despite his recent complaints about the numbers. And in the Fun Half: Gabe from Ontario calls in to get out the vote for the NDP in the upcoming Canadian election, Sandy from Ontario boosts that message before getting a warm thank you for her incredible gift to the MR studio, and Nicholas from St. Louis converses with Sam and Emma on the differences in pushing for individual lifestyle changes (veganism) and pushing for actual policy change.
