Episode 3 - Can Whitetail Deer See Orange?

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 10, 2020 10:01

In this podcast, I talk about whether whitetail deer can see the color orange and if it affects your hunt or not. Ever since we implemented the orange vest hunters have always questioned if deer can see it. To prove my point that deer cannot see orange in this post I talk about how an eye works and the research behind the orange color choice. Visit the full article here: https://omegaoutdoors.blog/orange Watch the YouTube video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfnyH3Sh3yE To understand why deer can not see certain colors, you need to understand how their vision works. To start, whitetail deer have their eyes placed on the side of their heads so they have a wider field of view but terrible depth perception. Next, they are dichromatic, meaning that they only see in two main colors. Those colors are blue and green, where humans see in red blue and green. We have done many studies proving this. The most recent was at UGA. Since deer are dichromatic they only see in blues and greens. So when you see red they see brown and when you see orange they see gray.
