The father. The Son. The mending of a broken spirit. Absent Sire is a personal journey that chronicles conversations I've had with my estranged father. I learn about his childhood, a side of the family I never knew, and why my dad left my sister and I after our parents divorced.

It's been almost a year since I've last posted an episode. To be honest, working on this project takes a lot out of me. On one hand, I'm learning more than ever about my dad's side of the family. On the other hand...I'm learning that my dad was an anxious, lonely, and troubled human, through no fault of his own. In this episode, we talk about his first marriage, what caused that marriage to dissolve, and the mental anguish my father lives with to this day.

If Absent Sire were a movie episode 4 would be the beginning of the rising action. Dad talks about dropping out of school and going to work, the hardships of that decision, and his decision to go back and finish his degree. All of that pales in comparison to when Dad reveals something about himself I never knew. It was a bit of a mindfuck because for me, it was something completely out of left field. As I re-listen to our audio and think about my early life and who Dad is as a person...it all starts to make sense.

Sorry for the long time between Episodes 2 and 3. A lot has been going on in life, and for a while I was burnt out from podcasting. I do everything from the website to creating the audiograms. At this point in our conversations Dad was finishing high school and went to college. The Vietnam War was winding down around that time, but that didn't mean the threat of the draft wasn't a clear and present concern for him. I learned about Dad's time in college, and was amazed that it mirrored my college experience.

In this episode I learned more about Dad's family, from his mother's side to his father's side, and an aunt I never got the chance the meet. The end of the episode shares my personal feelings on some of the things he told me and we begin to scratch the surface of our relationship. Follow Absent Sire on Instagram, @absentsirepodcast.
