A monthly podcast bringing together contemporary art and fiction. Hear an original short piece of prose, commissioned by Art Unscene in response to a work by a living artist. Insights into the writer's creative process, and the inspiration behind the story. A chance for art-lovers, collectors, critics, and curators to rethink works by established and emerging artists.
In this episode, we are joined by the poet and dancer Nicholas Goodley, who responds to a mixed media work by Gladys Nilsson with the short story, “This Is Everything.” In Goodley’s story, we find a narrator consumed with creative energy, but injured and unable to channel it through their body. Sidelined, the narrator sets about making costumes from found objects in nature for an upcoming dance recital, but in the process, slowly transforms into something more than human. Nicholas brings a poet’s intuitive sensibility to this tale of obsession. They connect the story with their own journey from dancer to writer, reflecting on how Nilsson’s image can be seen as an allegory for the process of art-making itself.
In this first episode of Art Unscene, poet Emily Skillings responds to painter Tom Schneider's "The Winged Mermaid's Lair" with an unnerving story.
