A dogs state of mind, attitude and ability to control his/her impulses are the most important skill in real life situations... unexpected knocks at the door, passing dogs and people while out on the walk, remaining calm and polite at family get togethers, etc. But most folks focus on obedience comma…
Dogs often get a free pass when it comes to bad manners and rude behaviour... but if we expect the best from them in all situations and hold them accountable for giving us their best, then we have a great opportunity for teaching our dogs how to be wonderfully polite companions. To socialize doesn’t mean ignoring rules, invading the personal space of another dog or a person, or acting like an overexcited brat. Socializing means calmly exiting around other dogs and people while giving their best polite behaviour.
People love storytelling and it’s an amazing way to share experiences with one another, but when the old ‘he’s a rescue so he can’t... or he won’t.... or he’s too afraid... “ stories out limits on what a dogs future could be, then it’s time to kick those tall tales to the curb. Truthfully, most of us don’t know what the dog experienced... the story was invented by what owners assumed happened and then added their own human emotional perspective. Dogs don’t hang on to emotional baggage like people do... unless their people are hanging onto it for them and keeping them stuck in an old pattern of ‘down on his luck’. Let that stuff go because we don’t really know what great behaviours our dogs are capable of until we stop making excuses (and stories!!!) for his current behaviour.
