Chesie and Millie weren't just dogs — they were inseparable. Two massive, gentle Newfoundlands who loved each other as fiercely as any siblings ever could. When illness took Millie far too young, the loss hit the family hard. But not long after she passed, familiar sounds began echoing through the house — the unmistakable jingle of her collar tags when no one else was home. Coins started appearing in strange places. And whenever Chesie pulled out their favorite toy, something in the room seemed to shift. Then, months later, history repeated itself in the most heartbreaking way.As Chesie took her final breaths, her eyes locked onto something moving around the room — something only she could see. In that moment, her family felt certain of one thing: she wasn't leaving alone. Was it grief? Coincidence? This episode starts with TikTok's updated Terms of Service, specifically the part where apps want to know where you are at all times, and quickly spirals into a much bigger question: did we accidentally sign up for the surveillance state… or was it always inevitable? Kristin and I debate privacy, inevitability, pessimism, preparedness, and whether refusing to participate actually protects you, or just makes life harder. Somewhere in there, we revisit COVID lockdown memories, the great toilet paper shortage, and why Kristin still believes in go-bags… everywhere. Then things get personal. We talk about Milo, our very large, very inbred standard poodle, and his recurring seizures. I do what every human doctor does best: Google outside my scope, panic quietly, and admit I don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to dogs. We walk through idiopathic epilepsy, toxins, brain issues, genetics, and the complicated question of when a dog actually needs lifelong seizure medication. Finally, we crack open First Aid and land on Ehlers-Danlos syndrome — collagen, hypermobility, bruising, joint issues, blood vessels, aneurysm anxiety, and what it's like to live with a genetic condition that medicine still doesn't fully understand. It's nerdy, personal, and surprisingly validating. Takeaways: Digital Privacy Isn't Theoretical: Location tracking, data collection, and why opting out isn't always realistic. Preparedness vs Panic: Go-bags, pessimism, and how couples balance very different risk tolerances. Dog Seizures Are Terrifying: Idiopathic epilepsy is common, but deciding when to treat isn't simple. Pet Insurance Confusion: Why even doctors don't know what's actually worth paying for. Ehlers-Danlos Reality: Collagen types, hypermobility, bruising, and living with a condition medicine still struggles to define. — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live  We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! Told through the eyes of an Israeli combat officer who's haunted by the trauma of fighting in Gaza, Dog (Soncata Press 2025) is a gritty story about PTSD, the effects of war, and resilience. Dog was translated into English by the renowned New translator Yardenne Greenspan , and centers on “Geller,” once a prize-winning hero, who has spiraled into heroin addiction and lives from hit to hit, surrounded by filth, despair, and other broken men. Geller is barely surviving the streets of Tel Aviv when his days are brightened by the arrival of a stray dog. Dog leads him to Dorit, a lonely woman who has also experienced loss and living on edge of society. This moving novel, a Jewish Book Award winner, describes the anguish of Geller's brutal memories, the physical and mental wounds he'll carry always, and his quest to bend a spoon like Uri Geller. Yishai Ishi Ron is an acclaimed Israeli author, a former elite combat soldier, and a survivor of severe PTSD. Writing has been an essential part of his healing journey, enabling him to transform deeply personal wounds into stories of trauma, resilience, and redemption. Ron's previous works in Hebrew include Holiday Apocalypse, which was nominated for the Geffen Award, and Vincent's Nose, a children's book that was adapted into an award-winning play. Across genres, his writing continues to explore the fragile boundary between suffering and survival, silence and voice, despair and imagination. His next novel, The Girl Who Rode the White Lion, will be published by Soncata Press later in 2026. He's passionate about reading, especially world literature and contemporary Israeli fiction. Because of his PTSD, he doesn't leave the house very much and has a very close relationship with my wife of 29 years, Elinor. Yishai always writes while standing, usually at the kitchen island, because standing helps him maintain a certain emotional balance. Learn more about your ad choices. A Taranaki cyclist is on crutches, with several deep puncture wounds after a roaming dog latched onto her leg sending her crashing off her bike while she was out on a country road. A spate of serious dog attacks, and residents in areas around the country forced to carry weapons to protect themselves from roaming animals has sparked fierce debate about reforming the 30-year-old dog control law. A New Plymouth resident was cycling a popular loop outside the city on Saturday morning, when she was rushed by an uncontrolled dog on Tikorangi East road. Amelia, who was chased by the dog, spoke to Lisa Owen.

Robin Dreeke joins Hidden Killers Live for extended analysis of two active cases: Kouri Richins' murder trial beginning February 23rd and the FBI's ongoing investigation into Nancy Guthrie's disappearance. For Richins: Robin applies his "Life Arc" framework to the prosecution's timeline—years of alleged insurance positioning, the 2020 confrontation over financial fraud, and the compressed eighteen-day window between fentanyl procurement and Eric's death. Then his "Tempo Tells" methodology breaks down Kouri's post-death behavior: the 911 call, the children's book tour, and the "Walk the Dog" letter allegedly scripting witness testimony from jail. What should twelve jurors watch for over five weeks? For Guthrie: Robin decodes this week's investigative moves. Prosecutors say Kouri Richins poisoned her husband Eric with fentanyl, searched for lethal doses online, texted her boyfriend about how perfect life would be without him, and took out nearly two million in life insurance he allegedly didn't know about. Eric had five times the lethal dose in his system. Less than a year later, Kouri was promoting a children's grief book on television. On paper, it looks insurmountable. But Bob Motta says the defense has real weapons. Robert Crozier — the alleged fentanyl supplier — has recanted, now claiming he sold OxyContin and was detoxing when he made his original statement. No pills were ever found in the home. The judge excluded evidence that Eric was allegedly abusive and barred a domestic violence expert, cutting off a key defense narrative. The "Walk the Dog" letter — allegedly witness tampering instructions found in Kouri's jail cell — was partially admitted over the defense's objection that it's fiction from a manuscript. And then there's Kouri's mother, Lisa Darden, whose romantic partner died of an oxycodone overdose in 2006 after naming her as beneficiary. A detective flagged it as suspicious. She was present the night Eric died. Motta breaks down how the defense exploits every crack in this case — and whether it's enough to create reasonable doubt over five weeks of testimony.#KouriRichins #EricRichins #KouriRichinsTrial #FentanylMurder #BobMotta #RobertCrozier #WitnessRecantation #UtahTrial #TrueCrime #HiddenKillersJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? One trial beginning this week. One investigation building toward identification. FBI behavioral analyst Robin Dreeke breaks down what the evidence reveals in both cases.Kouri Richins faces jurors starting February 23rd. The prosecution's case spans years of alleged insurance positioning, the 2020 confrontation when Eric discovered financial fraud, and the compressed timeline of fentanyl procurement and death in February 2022. Robin applies his "Life Arc" framework to ask what behavioral trajectory allegedly led here—and his "Tempo Tells" methodology to examine Kouri's post-death behavior: the 911 call, the children's book tour, and the "Walk the Dog" letter found in her jail cell.Nancy Guthrie's case has no named suspect—but this week's developments signal movement. The FBI contacted Mexican federal law enforcement. A gun shop owner was shown eighteen to twenty-four names with photos. Investigators are tracking a distinctive holster. Tech companies are recovering overwritten footage. And CeCe Moore says the DNA is "extremely hopeful" for genetic genealogy.Robin's FBI career was built on reading exactly these patterns. What does the prosecution's eighteen-day window between Kouri's alleged first attempt and Eric's death reveal about psychological state? What should jurors watch for over five weeks that separates genuine emotion from performance? For Guthrie: What does FBI international outreach signal when local authorities say there's no border evidence? What do the physical evidence details—the ring visible through the glove, the unusual holster position—reveal about someone who showed forensic awareness? Is this case building toward answers or losing momentum?Extended analysis. Two cases. In this episode of Gamebird University, hosts James Callicutt and Mark McConnell sit down with Dr. Ben Jones, CEO of the Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society, for a grounded, field-tested conversation about young-forest conservation in the South—and what it really takes to sustain ruffed grouse, American woodcock, and the people who care about them across the range. The crew explores how disturbance and interspersion drive habitat value, why woodcock routinely show up in unexpected cover, and how modern tools—GPS tracking, remote sensing, and on-the-ground monitoring—are reshaping our understanding of migration, wintering needs, and day-to-day behavior. They dig into practical management levers (from timber harvest to patch size and structure) and the realities of working forests where wildlife, landowners, and economics intersect. They also confront the messaging gap: how public perception can stall necessary habitat work, and why conservationists must reclaim the narrative from preservation-only mindsets with clear, science-forward communication. Along the way, they spotlight the rise of bird-dog culture, why trusting your dog is often the best lesson in ecology, and how woodcock hunting can be an inviting on-ramp for new hunters and future advocates. Listeners will come away with a crisp picture of what "young forest" actually means on the ground, how technology is sharpening management decisions, and why collaborative, working-lands conservation remains essential for upland birds—across seasons, ownerships, and communities.

Together, Ryan and Michael explore the vision behind the Canis Conference - a bold new event designed to bring trainers, behavior consultants, veterinarians, shelter professionals, scientists, and dog sports enthusiasts together under one roof. Michael shares how Canis was born from a desire to dismantle silos, reduce divisiveness, and create a space where learning, collaboration, and respectful dialogue can flourish across differing backgrounds and methodologies. The conversation moves well beyond conference planning, diving into the emotional and professional toll of online conflict, social media algorithms, and the rise of polarized "team" identities within the dog training world. Michael speaks candidly about criticism, controversy, and resilience, offering powerful insights for both emerging and established professionals navigating public discourse, online platforms, and ethical responsibility. Throughout the episode, the emphasis remains on compassion, professionalism, and the importance of face-to-face connection in restoring trust - both within the industry and with the public we serve. In this episode, we discuss: The vision and structure of the Canis Conference and its festival-style, multi-disciplinary approach Why safety, inclusion, and professionalism matter more than ever in the dog training industry The impact of social media algorithms on conflict, identity, and professional behavior Navigating criticism, controversy, and online hostility with integrity and resilience Moving beyond divisive labels to find shared values and common ground The power of in-person connection to rebuild trust, empathy, and collaboration Whether you are a new trainer finding your voice, a seasoned professional reflecting on your role in the wider community, or someone longing for a more respectful and united industry, this episode offers clarity, courage, and a hopeful vision for where we go next - together. Two major case developments this week. FBI behavioral analyst Robin Dreeke provides analysis on both.Kouri Richins' murder trial opens February 23rd in Summit County, Utah. Prosecutors have laid out years of alleged preparation: nearly $2 million in insurance policies taken out without Eric's knowledge, financial fraud discovered in 2020, and a compressed timeline in February 2022 between fentanyl procurement and his death. Robin applies his behavioral frameworks to ask what jury members should watch for—and examines Kouri's post-death behavior from the 911 call to the children's book tour to the "Walk the Dog" letter found in her cell.Nancy Guthrie remains missing while the FBI intensifies its investigation. This week: eighteen to twenty-four names with photographs shown to a Tucson gun shop owner. FBI outreach to Mexican federal law enforcement. Investigators canvassing shops to match a distinctive holster. Tech companies attempting to recover overwritten Nest footage. And CeCe Moore's assessment that the mixed DNA is "extremely hopeful" for genetic genealogy.Robin reads the investigative tempo across both cases. The Animal Rescue Podcast: what you always wanted to know but didn’t know who to ask

This week I am thrilled to talk with Richie Marino, a balanced dog trainer from New Jersey whose personal journey from emergency services to dog training is as compelling as his training philosophy. After battling alcoholism and PTSD, Richie credits his rescue German Shepherd Greta with saving his life, which inspired him to dedicate his career to helping dogs stay in their homes through clear, kind communication and balanced training methods. In this episode, Richie breaks down what it really means to be a leader for your dog, why we need to stop talking so much and start understanding canine body language, and how to cut through social media's unrealistic portrayals of "perfect" dogs. Whether you're struggling with your own dog or looking for a trainer, Richie shares invaluable insights on building structure, setting boundaries, and honoring dogs for who they truly are—not as humans or objects, but as dogs. Bonus, my husband, Dan, joins in on the fun to get some of his own questions answered!
