DALLAS THE DOG TEAMS UP WITH MAGPIES TO FIGHT COCKATOOS Colleague Jeremy Zakis. Zakisrecounts how his dog, Dallas, successfully chased destructive cockatoos off their property. While usually friendly, Dallasidentified the birds as enemies, aided by territorial magpies that swooped in to drive the cockatoos away. Although cockatoos are often considered pests that raid trash bins and damage homes in New South Wales, Dallas's vigilance has protected Zakis's yard, forcing the birds to target the neighbor's roof instead.

Culture wars don't just trend, they shape how power moves. We dig into a week where celebrity influence and political spin collided: Nicki Minaj's embrace of a hard-right stage that actively undermines Black and LGBTQ communities, JD Vance's “stop apologizing for being white” applause line, and a devastating Hollywood family tragedy that shows how money can't mend untreated pain. The connective tissue is influence and accountability, who wields it, who gets harmed, and what it takes to repair trust.I talk through Nicki's long relationship with the fans who fueled her rise and why this sharp pivot feels like betrayal, not evolution. We revisit the pattern of courting crossover success, then denouncing it when backlash hits, and the choice to praise figures who've mocked the very people who once championed her. Accountability isn't about punishing art; it's about honoring the communities that built the stage in the first place. When leaders double down instead of showing contrition, they tell us exactly where their loyalties lie. Then we break down JD Vance's soundbite as a classic dog whistle, confusing empathy with guilt and reframing equity as persecution. No one asked for apologies for being white; people asked for fairness, accurate history, and equal protection. That nuance gets lost because outrage is more clickable than honesty. Finally, we turn to the Nick Reiner case to confront the limits of wealth against addiction and mental illness. Allowances, access, and best intentions can still enable dysfunction without structure, evidence‑based treatment, and boundaries. The lesson is hard but necessary: resources matter, but accountability and care plans matter more.If this conversation sparks a reaction, good —add your voice. We talk dogs, grief, purpose, creativity… and how hope and compassion can grow even through life's toughest seasons.Julie Hill is a writer, podcaster, and lifelong dog lover who's been celebrating the human–dog bond since 2006. From her rural home in Shropshire, surrounded by family, dogs, cats, and a lively crew of companion animals, she hosts DogCast Radio, where she's interviewed world-class trainers, behaviorists, scientists, authors, and rescue advocates from around the globe. Her heart-dog Buddy the Black Lab took her from the main arena at Crufts to appearances on national TV, and his loss shaped the empathy and passion she brings to her work today. In 2015, Julie was diagnosed with MS — a moment she describes honestly and powerfully:“It shut me down, I felt I lost who I was.”Since then, she's shared her journey with courage and openness, speaking about anxiety, postpartum struggles, resilience, and the deep healing connection we share with our dogs. She's also taken the stage as a stand-up comedian — even performing at the legendary London Comedy Store — using humor and storytelling to help others feel less alone. In this conversation, we talk dogs, grief, purpose, creativity… and how hope and compassion can grow even through life's toughest seasons.https://www.facebook.com/DogCastRadiohttps://www.instagram.com/dogcastradio/https://bsky.app/profile/juliedogcastradio.bsky.socialhttps://x.com/DogCastRadio/Host of www.DogCastRadio.comPresenter on www.UKHealthRadio.com Learn more about your host:www.kimlenglingauthor.com

The dog, writes poet Billy Collins, moves through the world unencumbered, with “nothing but her brown coat and her modest blue collar.” In a new collection called “Dog Show,” the former U.S. Poet Laureate turns his gaze toward the quiet wisdom of our canine friends — their reminders to slow down, pay attention and let the ordinary become radiant. Look Who's Talking Now! (1993) was chosen by Chris, rounding out the unlikely trilogy that began as a surprise hit in 1989. By the early '90s, the Look Who's Talking franchise had already proven its commercial appeal, and TriStar Pictures was keen to keep the momentum going. This third entry shifted focus behind the scenes, with original director Amy Heckerling stepping away and Tom Ropelewski taking over directorial duties. John Travolta and Kirstie Alley returned following the success of Look Who's Talking Too, while the production leaned heavily on the established brand recognition rather than reinventing the formula. The film was produced during a transitional period for Hollywood family comedies, as studios increasingly relied on sequels, celebrity voice work, and broad humor to attract audiences. A major production emphasis was placed on the voice performances, enlisting high-profile actors to give personality and comedic timing to the animal characters through extensive ADR sessions. Despite a solid budget and the continued involvement of its star leads, Look Who's Talking Now! faced franchise fatigue upon release and struggled to recapture the box-office success of its predecessors. Today, it's remembered as a curious example of early-'90s sequel culture — a film driven more by brand familiarity than creative necessity, and a reminder of how quickly novelty concepts can wear thin.If you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here.Referral links also help out the show if you were going to sign up:NordVPNNordPassTrailer Guy Plot SummaryFrom the creators of a blockbuster comedy franchise… comes the one where the pets finally take over. The family is back, the chaos is louder, and this time the dogs have something to say. With celebrity voices, slapstick mayhem, and 90s family-friendly insanity turned up to eleven, Look Who's Talking Now! lets the animals loose — commenting on love, loyalty, and household madness like only talking pets can.Look Who's Talking Now! — when the fur flies, the truth comes out.Fun FactsLook Who's Talking Now! was the final film in the Look Who's Talking trilogy, bringing the franchise to an end after three movies in five years. The movie marked one of the rare times Danny DeVito and Diane Keaton voiced animated characters together, even though neither appears on screen. The dogs' mouth movements were created using subtle animatronics and careful editing, rather than full CGI, which was still limited in the early 1990s.Despite mixed reviews, the film performed strongly on VHS and rental charts, continuing the franchise's popularity in the home-video market. The movie received several Golden Raspberry Award nominations, including Worst Screenplay and Worst Supporting Actress, reflecting its critical reception.Look Who's Talking Now! was released during a wave of early-90s “talking animal” movies, alongside films like Homeward Bound and Bingo. This installment shifted the franchise's focus more toward family-friendly animal comedy, a move that divided fans of the earlier films. The film has since gained a nostalgic cult following, particularly among viewers who grew up watching it repeatedly on VHS and cable television.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback
