A tragic and inexplicable shooting in Los Angeles has a dog owner and several organizations demanding answers. While responding to a report of a woman screaming, officers knocked on the door of Knick’s fan, 45-year-old Marie Marseille who’d been screaming following her team’s historic victory. Her 2-year-old St. Bernard, Golden Retriever, Poodle mix dog named Jameson ran out of the apartment and according to police, charged the officer. Today's John J. Elsewhere, a breakdown of the RBA and BoJ meetings and their impact, what we're watching for from the Fed, observations on the quality and sustainability of the US-Iran "deal" and more. Sexier Than A Squirrel: Dog Training That Gets Real Life Results
Send us Fan MailWelcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Lauren is joined by the brilliant Sam to answer a listener question that so many owners of worried dogs will recognise: what do you do when the very confidence-building games designed to help your dog seem to scare them in the first place?Whether it's a cardboard box, a crinkly bottle, a piece of paper on the floor, or simply something unfamiliar appearing in the environment, some dogs find the world a much bigger and scarier place than others. In this episode, Lauren and Sam explore why confidence building isn't about following a game exactly as it's demonstrated, but about finding the right starting point for the dog in front of you.Together, they discuss how to break optimism games down into tiny, achievable steps. For some dogs, that might mean playing Cardboard Chaos. For others, it might simply mean being comfortable in the same room as a cardboard box. You'll hear why progress often comes from looking for the smallest possible win and building from there, rather than pushing for the finished picture too quickly.Lauren and Sam also chat about the role of movement, choice, and pressure release when working with nervous dogs. They explore why giving a dog the option to leave can actually help them become braver, how owner pressure can unintentionally make confidence struggles harder, and why keeping training light, playful, and enjoyable often creates the biggest breakthroughs. The conversation also highlights the importance of reinforcement. From food motivation and toy play to everyday opportunities for earning rewards, you'll hear why "trainability is susceptibility to reinforcement" and how building a stronger reinforcement history can transform what is possible for a worried dog. Lauren shares examples from her own dogs, while Sam talks about helping a noise-sensitive dog learn that sounds and novelty can predict fun rather than worry. Most importantly, this episode is a reminder that there is no single blueprint for confidence building. The best training plan is always the one that works for the dog standing in front of you.If you're living with a nervous, cautious, or pessimistic dog, this episode is packed with practical ideas, encouragement, and simple next steps to help you build confidence one small win at a time.Looking for your dog's starting point? He runs twice as far as you walk ... and he does it barefoot. Taking care of your bird dog's feet ensures a great day in the field and a long, problem-free season. I'll share advice from veterinarians and my own and friends' experience preparing our dog's feet for hunting season. I'll offer my personal perspective on "toughening" pads, and what to use for "boots." And once you're out there, I'll outline some things you should do before, during and after the hunt to keep him firing on all eight cylinders and all four paws. Identifying injuries, when to call it a day, what to watch for, how to fix common problems are all on the table. We'll talk about keeping pads supple, nail trimming, and more. Viewers and listeners share the mileage they'll drive on their first-day-of-the-season hunt, and "Fix It" shows you where to look if you want to hit more birds in the field. And it's all brought to you by: Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, CableGangz, TrulockChokes, Pointer shotguns, USA Clay Target League, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com.

What do chickens have to do with dog training? More than you might think. In this episode, I share the story of how a 40-hour week spent training chickens fundamentally changed the way I understood behavior, learning, and my work with dogs. After starting my career in 1996 with traditional obedience methods—including the use of prong collars—I began questioning what I thought I knew about training and discovered a different path rooted in learning theory, communication, and relationship.I also introduce my new online course, Understanding Dog Interaction, where we explore how dogs communicate through play, body language, and social interactions. Understanding these signals can help prevent conflicts, improve relationships, and teach us to recognize when a dog is saying "yes," "no," or "not right now."We also recap our reliable recall episode where we discussed why meeting a dog's genetic and behavioral needs is critical for building responsiveness, and how a simple touch cue can become a powerful, reward-based safety tool while recall skills are still developing.Whether you're interested in dog communication, recall training, behavior science, or the evolution of modern dog training, this episode offers insight into the lessons that shaped my approach and continue to influence how I help dogs and their humans today.WebsitePatreonOnline Courses

Philippa, Katie and Quentin are back for the week in Ambridge — Sunday 14th to Tuesday 16th June — and it has been a dramatic one.A savage dog attack on Brookfield's sheep leaves 15 dead and more injured, David losing it at Brian over warning signs, and the friendship between the two men looking badly damaged. Meanwhile Adam manipulates George into revealing more about the night of the accident — but what is he planning to do with that information? Could he push George into going to the police himself? And would Brian go further than anyone expects to protect Ruairi? Also this week: Kate has a stunning week — handling Brian, supporting Kirsty and knocking heads together with real Jenny-esque authority. Brian gets a double ouch from both Oliver and David. George and Amber get the Grundy baby cart out. Ian double-books the quiz. And all three hosts independently land on the same Star of the Week, which has never happened before.Plus Star of the Week, Twit of the Week, predictions — and Quentin has a foreboding feeling about Jim Lloyd.Topics covered: Dog attack | Brookfield sheep | Brian Aldridge | Adam Macy | George Grundy | Kate Aldridge | Kirsty Miller | Ian Thornton | Jim Lloyd | Amber | Home Farm | The Archers June 2025ou can BUY US A COFFEE here: buymeacoffee.com/allaboutthearchersYou can buy our MERCH here: https://www.redbubble.com/people/aboutthearchers/shopDo join our FACEBOOK Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1127587031446013/ Hosted on Acast. Send us Fan MailIn S2E25, we start with Slinky covered in stickers, dog hair everywhere, and Robby debating whether Slinky's “newts” need to go after he marks one of the LEGO boxes. From there, we talk about brushing Slinky and Roxy, Roxy's guard-dog energy, bite strength, and how weirdly gentle she gets when taking treats. The episode then shifts into Ian's ongoing Range Rover nightmare, including the P0341 camshaft position sensor code, the possible timing chain issue, and the brutal £6,000 repair quote. We also get into whether it makes more sense to fix it, trade it in, or sell it to a dealership, before somehow ending up on COVID car prices, Robby's possibly broken toe, dog bite stories, future dog options, pipe screens, frozen video delays, and the unforgettable birth of “Dick Falange.” Support the show

Klein took a trip to the Pasadena Humane Society this weekend and was talked into adopting a dog, but a twist at the end left him empty-handed. Ally's animal experience of the weekend was getting crapped on by a bird at the Long Beach Aquarium. Both stories prove we shouldn't be allowed around people OR animals. We kicked off Father's Day week by hearing the worst/best advice your dad ever gave you (or that you ever gave to your kid). Good advice included how to properly pour a beer, and bad advice included having sex with a wig on to 'keep it interesting' in the bedroom. Don't Be A Dick, Rich People! We continued our effort to eliminate the dicks of the world by publicly shaming them, and today we focused on dick rich people. Nominees included bad tippers, people who drive slow in fast cars, and non-fans who go to sporting events as a flex. Which rich dick would you like to nominate? We also went through a relationship satisfaction quiz and we quickly learned most marriages aren't happy ones. Like us, they're just ok!
Protecting Dogs from the Dangerous Return of the New World Screwworm Host Laura Reeves and veterinarian Marty Greer discuss the alarming resurgence of the New World Screwworm, outlining vital travel precautions, key symptoms to watch for and the medications used to treat this invasive parasite. The Return of a Lethal Threat:After being successfully managed since 1966 using a sterile fly release program, the New World Screwworm has crossed back over the U.S. border. Confirmed cases have already appeared in livestock and dogs. How Screwworms Differ from Normal Maggots:Unlike typical fly larvae that only infest damaged or dead tissue, New World Screwworm larvae aggressively penetrate and destroy healthy, normal tissue in dogs, cats, livestock and even humans.Fluid Travel Restrictions:State and international borders are experiencing rapidly shifting regulations. Dog owners are warned to avoid traveling across the Mexican border, remain highly cautious when traveling interstate and ensure they carry official health certificates. What to Do If You Find a Larva:This is a federally reportable disease. If you discover a larva in a wound, do not throw it on the ground where it can pupate. Instead, preserve it in alcohol or formalin and immediately contact your veterinarian to notify authorities.Treatment Options:Oral flea and tick medications in theisoxazolineclass (such as Cridelio, Nexgard, Brevecta, and Semperica) andnicotinamides(such as Capstar) are the primary medications utilized or suspected for emergency treatment, although their preventative capabilities are still being studied.Other Exotic Diseases on the Rise:The episode also flags other global health threats creeping into the U.S. due to warming temperatures, includingChagas disease(transmitted by the kissing bug and causing severe cardiac disease) and aliver flukeshowing up in the Colorado River Valley. Hey, it's Amy Newmark with your Chicken Soup for the Soul and I'm excited to share more stories with you from our latest humor book, Chicken Soup for the Soul: I Can't Stop Laughing. We've got stories from people who make fun of themselves, tell stories on their family members and friends and colleagues, share their most embarrassing moments, and also share some great anecdotes about their cats and dogs. Dear Friends, What if your dog is not just your companion… but a spiritual guide? In this episode of Gateways to Awakening, I sit down with author and spiritual teacher JJ Flowers to explore the deeper, often unseen relationship between humans and dogs. Based on her book The Spiritual Dog: Emissary of Unconditional Love and Healing, JJ shares a powerful perspective: that dogs are not companions, but intentional beings who enter our lives to support, heal, and evolve with us.Together, they explore the idea that dogs are carriers of unconditional love, operating from a level of awareness that most humans have forgotten how to access. From telepathic communication to emotional mirroring, JJ explains how dogs constantly read our energy, reflect our inner world, and in many cases, transmute what we cannot process ourselves. The conversation moves through grief, healing, and the unseen realms, as JJ shares her personal journey of loss and the spiritual awakening that followed, opening her perception to a deeper connection with both the animal kingdom and the energetic world beyond the physical. Yasmeen and JJ also explore practical ways to deepen your connection with your dog, including simple techniques for intuitive communication, understanding your dog's behavior as energetic feedback, and how practices like breathwork and meditation can strengthen your sensitivity to subtle energy. Special shout-out to my adopted dogs, Goose and Lucky. Love you both so much. :) And to all the dogs that bring us so much love. We love you. In this episode, we explore:- Why dogs may choose us—and the idea of soul contracts across lifetimes- How dogs mirror and absorb human emotional states- The role of unconditional love as a healing force- How to begin communicating with your dog intuitively- The energetic and spiritual anatomy shared between humans and animals- How grief can open the doorway to expanded awareness- Why connection—to animals, to each other, and to something greater—is at the core of healing- This episode invites you to see your dog—and perhaps all of life—through an entirely new lensTune in to Gateways to Awakening for more conversations with leading thinkers, creators, and spiritual pioneers shaping the future of consciousness. In this deeply personal conversation, Ryan Cartlidge is joined by Danielle Beck — a UK-based clinical animal behaviorist, mentor, and founder of Control The Meerkat. With a rich background spanning over 20 years in zoology and companion animal behavior, Danielle brings a unique and vulnerable lens to the profession, specializing in complex cases involving trauma, aggression, emotional regulation, and assistance dog training. Together, Ryan and Danielle explore the critical and often overlooked reality of isolation within the animal training industry. Danielle opens up about her personal journey living with dissociative identity disorder, explaining how the stigma surrounding her own mental health and disability mirrors the challenges many trainers face when they feel pressured to project an image of perfection. They discuss how the "Instagram-reality" of our profession often prevents trainers from seeking the support they need, leading to burnout, compassion fatigue, and imposter syndrome. The conversation also highlights the intersection of neuroscience and practical animal training. Danielle shares how her "meerkat analogy"—a tool for understanding the moment an animal shifts into survival mode—has become a cornerstone of her approach to trauma-informed practice. She offers a compassionate roadmap for professionals to build stronger, more collaborative networks, manage time budgets in the face of disability or neurodivergence, and create "safe spaces" where trainers can bounce ideas off one another without the fear of judgment. This episode is a heartfelt call to action for the industry to move away from competition and toward radical empathy. By leaning into vulnerability and acknowledging our shared human limitations, we can build a more inclusive, resilient, and supportive community for both the animals we train and the humans who care for them. Throughout this episode, we discuss: ✅ The "behavior odyssey" that led Danielle from zookeeping to clinical animal behavior ✅ Understanding the "lizard brain" and the universality of learning theory across species ✅ The hidden epidemic of isolation among animal professionals and why peer support is essential ✅ Danielle's personal experience with dissociative identity disorder and the importance of professional transparency ✅ How to build a sustainable, values-driven career while managing chronic illness or disability ✅ Moving from a "people-pleasing" mindset to setting healthy professional boundaries ✅ Why the future of our industry depends on true collaboration, compassion, and removing the shame associated with asking for help Whether you're a seasoned professional, a trainer navigating your own health challenges, or simply seeking a more supportive peer network, this episode offers a refreshing and empowering roadmap for creating a career that is built on safety, kindness, and connection. Coming from Graz, Austria, Nancy shares a powerful message on living with holy resolve and refusing to be distracted from the Father's purpose. Drawing from the lives of Jesus and Nehemiah, she reveals how mature sons learn to stay focused on their assignment, refusing to come down from the wall to answer every accusation, distraction, opinion, or “barking dog” that seeks to pull them away from obedience. Nancy challenges listeners to move beyond reactionary living and into a settled agreement with the Father, where His voice becomes the defining authority over every circumstance. This episode is a call to exclusive allegiance, unwavering obedience, and the deep inner resolve that comes from knowing the Father and remaining steadfast in His purpose. Thanks for Listening!
