Send me a question or story!Periocular dermatitis can occur for a multitude of reasons. The first step is to figure out if the eye itself is involved or not. Once we know the eye is healthy, it is time to figure out why the SKIN AROUND the eye is losing hair, crusty, itchy, etc.It is important to return to the basic diagnostics. Cytology can be sampled with tape (if the lesion is dry) or swab (if the lesion is wet) to not risk damaging the eye. A trichogram can be used instead of a skin scrape to also protect the eye from a scalpel blade!Anything that can cause folliculitis to other areas of the skin can impact the periocular dermatitis. Allergies, mites, dermatophytosis, pyoderma, yeast dermatitis, autoimmune diseases and neoplasia can cause lesions. We are back this week with incredible news about a groundbreaking study that we've been grateful to be a part of working on for a few years. We've been working alongside some incredible people to help shape the future for dogs and dog owners when it comes to the food we give our best friends. A peer reviewed study has been published in the AVMA concerning copper storage in dogs. This was a project headed by Sharon Center and our own Pete Vanvranken along with collaboration and assistance from many other people. Our goal from day one has been to have a positive effect on the care of our pets and we have a heavy focus on our pet food here at Voyager. This study is a massive step in the right direction! We hope you'll listen to our recap of how everything came together to make this happen. Thanks so much for listening and be sure to subscribe and review!

Graeme Raubenheimer speaks to Belinda Abrahams, spokesperson for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, who says fireworks are far from harmless entertainment. She explains that inspectors routinely respond to frantic calls involving animals wedged into bathrooms, jumping through windows or suffering fatal injuries after panic-induced escape attempts. In some cases, criminal charges relating to animal abuse may be pursued when fireworks place animals at risk. Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. Send us a textWhat if the keys to calmer, clearer dog training are hiding in a muddy field at dawn?In this episode, we sit down with a farm-animal vet who swapped spotless theatres for open skies and on-call chaos. She walks us through the reality of rural practice - live calves at sunrise, emergency lambings, tea-stop triage, and the quiet skill of handling animals without force or fear. From those stories come the lessons every dog owner needs: • How reading body language becomes second nature • Why space is a cue and how stepping ahead or behind a shoulder can turn movement on like a switch • How pen size, positioning, and calm energy make handling safer and more effective • Why one well-trained dog can steady nervous sheep better than three people • How preparation and restraint change outcomes - whether it's a surgical success or the weight of a loss under anaesthesiaThen we connect the dots.Reluctant horses become blueprints for confidence games. Herding principles translate directly into agility handling, leash work, recall, and settling in busy environments. Working collies, kelpies, and huntaways show what clarity, timing, and resilience look like in motion and how the same principles transform everyday pet training.By the end, you'll understand why “stock sense” isn't just for farmers. It's a universal animal language - one that takes the chaos out of training and replaces it with calm, connection, and confidence. If this sparks ideas for your own training, share the episode, hit follow, and drop a quick review.Support the showIf you're loving the podcast, you'll love our NEW Sexier than a Squirrel Dog Training Challenge even more! Dan has 30 years in event security, working 13 Super Bowls and 7 Olympic Games, and he's here to expose the hard truths about detection dogs in the private sector. What We Cover:Why 90% of event security professionals don't understand what K9 teams actually doThe shocking reality of an unregulated industry (18-year-old security guards need certification, but K9 handlers don't?)Real incidents from major events - when private dogs saved the day vs. when they failedThe "second dog" problem that wastes time and creates false confirmationsWhy handler training matters MORE than dog trainingBreaking down barriers: why former military/LE background shouldn't be a requirementHow to actually evaluate K9 providers (stop hiring "Scooby Doo" detection services)Dan shares real stories from the field, including a tense situation at a 40,000-person tech conference where a dog alert could have shut down the entire event. We discuss the trust gap between law enforcement and private K9 teams, the punishment culture that makes handlers afraid to call alerts, and what needs to change industry-wide.This episode opens with me presenting Dan with a Naval Special Warfare Multi-Purpose Canine Program challenge coin - one of the rarest coins in the K9 world - as a symbol of trust and partnership.Whether you're a handler, trainer, event security professional, or just interested in detection dogs, this conversation will change how you think about commercial K9 operations.Dan Donovan's Companies:

In this episode Steve and Nubbin invite a brand, spanking new coon hunter to the microphone in an enjoyable conversation with ten-year old Brantley Whittle. Brantley became interested in coon hunting after reading Wilson Rawls' classic Where The Red Fern Grows as have so many children through the ages since Rawls penned the story of Old Dan and Little Ann in 1961. The parallels in age between the book's Billy Coleman and Brantley Whittle, Coleman is ten when the story begins and Whittle is ten now, open the door for an interesting discussion on the mindset of boys that age as they enter the sport for the first time. In our discussion we learn that Whittle sought, through the help of our Nubbin Moore, a female Redbone pup with which to start his journey because, as was Little Ann, the females were thought to be smarter. This episode will refresh the memories of youth for older hunters and will spark a desire to join the fun for novice hunters Brantley's age and beyond. We would like to thank those who support this podcast.  Special thanks to Double U Hunting Supply for sponsoring this episode.  www.dusupply.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@DoubleUHuntingSupply/podcasts Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.

For expecting parents with dogs, the question of safety can be a source of deep anxiety. This episode provides essential reassurance and a clear, practical roadmap. We begin by dismantling the common myth of dogs viewing babies as prey, explaining instead how canine mentality leads to curiosity, not aggression, when a new family member arrives. You'll understand why a dog's confusion stems from a baby's strange movements and sounds, not malicious intent. We then move beyond theory into an actionable timeline. Learn why the crawling toddler stage is far more critical for supervision than the newborn period, and gain concrete strategies for successful introductions, creating safe spaces, and reading your dog's stress signals. This guide empowers you to replace fear with confident management, fostering a safe and loving environment where both your child and your dog can thrive together.Free Videos from This Episode: Understanding Dog Body Language6 Basic Dog Bite Prevention Essentials You Need to Know to Protect Your ChildSubscribe for more bite-sized episodes and visit USADogBehavior.com for additional resources!Find us at USADogBehavior.com.Follow us on Facebook.DisclaimerThis podcast is for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional advice. Have you ever had to choose between your comfort and doing the right thing? In today's episode, I share a recent adventure that tested whether I actually live the values I claim to have.  While walking through my neighborhood, I discovered a gorgeous golden retriever locked outside with a set of keys dangling in the door. What followed was an awkward journey of knocking on windows, peering through glass feeling like a complete weirdo, and interrupting a stranger's private moment, all to help a dog who couldn't help himself. This story isn't about seasonal kindness or holiday cheer. It's about what genuine compassion actually looks like: uncomfortable, inconvenient, and often unappreciated. It's about showing up for the vulnerable even when no one's watching, even when you feel ridiculous, and even when the response you get isn't what you expected. In This Episode: The moment I had to decide between walking past or getting involved What it feels like to circle a stranger's house knocking on windows The surreal scene of a guy pouring drinks from a decanter by an aquarium Why the homeowner (maybe he was house-sitting?)  cared more about his keys than the dog What this experience taught me about real compassion versus performative kindness Why we need to show up for others even when it's awkward and uncomfortable Key Takeaway: Real compassion doesn't wait for the perfect moment or guaranteed appreciation. It means being willing to feel like a weirdo, going on awkward adventures you didn't sign up for, and choosing someone else's need over your own comfort. Every single time. If this episode resonated with you, please share it with someone who needs the reminder that compassion isn't seasonal, it's a daily practice. With peace and love always, Amber xoxo

This episode is a mix of two things. A full recap of a killer Christmas weekend with Stormy Crook and Aiden, and then a real talk discussion on using treats in retriever training. I start with why a simple comment I left on a Facebook video turned into a bigger conversation. The video showed a young pup being sent to a place board using treats, and I explain why I personally avoid treats with average to high drive retrievers. I get into intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation, why I want my dog working for the relationship and teamwork, and why I believe that foundation matters later when you are asking a dog to trust you on blinds and fight factors like wind and pressure. I am also going to ask Chris Jobman about this directly on the Flatlander Kennels Podcast, and I am open to being corrected. Before we get to that, I take you through one of my favorite stretches of the year, Christmas break, Mallard season, and the obsessive nature of waterfowl hunting. Then I break down an unforgettable weekend hosting Stormy and Aiden. We hunted hard, dealt with ice, ran the boat where other guys could not, and ended up with back to back three man Mallard limits with a bunch of feet down finishes. It was one of those rare weekends where expectations were low, the hunts were incredible, and everything came together. Wives had a great weekend too, and the new muck room got put to use the way it was meant to be used. Partners Shotty Gear

Although cockatoos are often considered pests that raid trash bins and damage homes in New South Wales, Dallas's vigilance has protected Zakis's yard, forcing the birds to target the neighbor's roof instead.
