You may have heard of hormesis — the idea that intentionally embracing small stressors activates the body's repair and defense systems, building resilience, improving how the body and even the microbiome function, and ultimately protecting against the harms of chronic stress. We typically think of these hormetic stressors in terms of things like exercising, taking ice baths, sitting in a sauna, and ingesting certain plant compounds. But you ought to consider adding socializing to that list.As my guest today explains, while we tend to avoid socializing as we do all stressors — even the good ones — it's something that can strengthen our health, resilience, immunity, and sense of meaning. Jeffrey Hall, professor of communication studies and co-author of The Social Biome: How Everyday Communication Connects and Shapes Us, joins me to discuss why relationships are harder to build in the modern world, how our adolescent approach to making friends needs to evolve, and why we must intentionally “exercise” our social muscles in a world where they'll otherwise atrophy.Resources Related to the PodcastJeffrey's previous appearance on the AoM podcast: Episode #772 — How Long Does It Take to Make Friends (And How Does That Process Work, Anyway)?AoM Article: 3 Things No One Ever Told You About Making Friends in AdulthoodAoM Article: The Importance of Developing and Maintaining Your Social FitnessAoM Podcast #863: Key Insights From the Longest Study on HappinessAoM Article: Love Is All You Need — Insights from the Longest Longitudinal Study on Men Ever ConductedConnect With Jeffrey HallKU's Relationships and Technology LabJeffrey's faculty pageJeffrey on LinkedInJeffrey on IGSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Episode 2742: Sara Watkins sheds light on a lesser-discussed challenge of parenting: the anxiety and emotional exhaustion that come from socializing with other parents. For introverts, these encounters can feel like a minefield of forced small talk, awkward silences, and unseen pressures, making what should be casual interactions feel anything but. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://introvertdear.com/news/when-the-scariest-part-of-parenthood-is-socializing-with-other-parents/ Quotes to ponder: "It's not the playdates or the birthday parties themselves that exhaust me - it's the other parents." "I don't want to be rude or cold. I just find all the small talk and the constant social performance draining." "As much as I want to support my child's social life, sometimes I feel like I need a support group just to survive it." Loneliness isn't just in your head… it impacts your body, mood, longevity and emotional health. There's real science behind why we crave connection, so in today's episode, we dive into the concept of the “social biome” (your personal ecosystem of relationships and daily interactions) and how it can transform your wellbeing. Founded by researchers Dr. Jeffrey Hall and Dr. Andy Merolla, the social biome is a framework for strengthening relationships and cultivating a real sense of community in a culture that's starved of real life connection.Whether you're introverted, socially anxious, super busy, or just craving more genuine relationships, invest in your social fitness with these doable strategies to help you build your social biome and connections.Tune in to learn:Why connection is “social nutrition” and how to feed your social health every day.The Ladder of Connection framework to move from restorative solitude to strong, meaningful friendships. How small, low-stakes interactions (“weak ties”) boost your mood and help you feel less isolated.Using social media and technology as a way to connect rather than compare and consume.Practical tips to actually make friends as an adult, nurture existing bonds, and create a supportive community. For advertising and sponsorship inquiries, please contact Frequency Podcast Network. This is a live q&a where many of the topics were centered around socializing aggressive dogs!
In this episode, Breht speaks with Robert E. Wilson, author of The Football Manifesto and The Supporters Trust League Manifesto. Together they explore what it means to socialize sports; to reclaim the Beautiful Game from billionaire owners, corrupt institutions, and imperial powers, and return it to the people as a democratic, community-owned, and liberatory project. Together, they examine the ways professional sports in the imperial core normalize colonialism, militarism, racism, and capitalism, while grassroots football worldwide has long been a site of resistance, solidarity, and struggle. From the NFL's “plantation economics” to the vision of supporter-owned clubs, equal pay for women's teams, and football as a hub of political education and mutual aid, this conversation makes clear that sports are never “just games.” They are battlefields for ideology and community -- as well as an expression of our nature as social beings -- and if reclaimed, they can become engines of solidarity, healthy communities, and socialist culture. Whether you are a sports fan or not, you will get a LOT out of this fascinating and surprisingly wide-ranging conversation! This week: Venus makes sweet music with Mars, enters Virgo, and finds beauty in unexpected places with Uranus. Mercury aspects serious Saturn, enters diplomatic Libra, gives voice to Neptune, and gains inspiration from Uranus before getting down and dirty with Pluto. The Sun's face-off with Saturn dominates the Virgo New Moon Solar Eclipse at the intense 29th degree. And there is so much to cover in the sky this week that there was no time for a listener question - but look for an answer to a listener question about a Mercury Retrograde-ish eclipse, on Big Sky Astrology's YouTube channel! Plus: Devil's advocacy, beautiful necessities, and things we'd prefer to forget. Read a full transcript of this episode. It's eclipse season! Subscribe to April's mailing list and get a free lunar workbook at each New Moon! Timestamps [1:37] Venus sextiles Mars (Mon. Sep. 15, 8:04 pm PDT, 25º51' Leo-Libra), unlocking inspiration, stirring attraction, and providing financial motivation. The Sabian symbol for Venus is 26 Leo, A rainbow, and Mars is on 26 Libra, An eagle and a large white dove turning one into the other. [4:03] Mercury opposes Saturn (Wed. Sep. 17, 10:47 am PDT, 28º46' Virgo-Pisces), on the Sabian symbols 29 Virgo, A man gaining secret knowledge from a paper he is reading and 29 Pisces, A prism. Reviewing our goals and the stories we tell about them. Delays in travel possible, along with discouraging news. [6:10] Mercury enters Libra on Thu. Sep. 18 (3:06 am PDT, through Oct. 6), and communication is characterized by grace, balance, and tact. An excellent time for negotiations, handling difficult interpersonal situations, persuading others to see things your way. Avoid argumentativeness. [7:35] Mercury opposes Neptune on Thu. Sep. 18 (3:01 pm PDT, 0°53' Libra-Aries). Strong intuition, ideal for artwork, love, spiritual pursuits, but less suited for logic or analysis. [8:29] Mercury trines Uranus on Thu. Sep. 18 (9:52 pm PDT, 1°23' Libra- Gemini). The desire to feel free to say exactly what's on our mind can lead to ill-advised blurting, but it's also a transit of awakening and clarification. [9:50] Mercury trines Pluto on Thu. Sep. 18 (11:27 pm PDT, 1°30' Libra-Aquarius). Mercury with Pluto brings up stark truths we need face. This is a transit of profound insight if we're willing to confront those realities. [11:20] Venus enters Virgo on Fri. Sep. 19 (5:39 am PDT, through Oct. 13). Venus is traditionally in her fall in Virgo because she is exalted in the opposite sign, Pisces. Venus in Virgo favors healthy food, tools, and organizational supplies. Socially, Venus here favors casual, low-key get-togethers, ideally outdoors. [12:55] Venus squares Uranus on Sat. Sep. 20 (8:41 am PDT, 1º22' Virgo-Gemini. The Sabian symbol for Venus is 2 Virgo, A large white cross upraised; Uranus is on 2 Gemini, Santa Claus filling stockings furtively. Socializing can be awkward, changes and disruptions possible in finances or relationships. [14:38] The Sun opposes Saturn on Sat. Sep. 20 (10:46 pm PDT, 28°30' Virgo-Pisces). Have compassion towards yourself and others, and develop persistence. [16:27] Moon Report! A second consecutive Virgo New Moon (the first was on Aug. 22 at 00º23' Virgo) is on Sun. Sep. 21 (12:54 pm PDT, at 29º05' Virgo, and it's a Solar Eclipse. The Sabian symbol for this eclipse point is 30 Virgo, A false call unheard in attention to immediate service. Communication, thoughts, and even movement have extra power around this time. [18:20] The New Moon point is trine Uranus, so the changes associated with eclipses could arrive suddenly or unexpectedly. An eclipse that's close to the South Node in Virgo emphasizes endings, release, letting go, being a little bit too perfectionistic or judgmental. Move toward the Pisces North Node's acceptance and willingness to go with the flow. [19:35] Solar Eclipses repeat on about the same day of the year and close to the same degree of the zodiac every 19 years. Previously, there were Solar Eclipses near this point on Sep. 22, 2006, and on Sep. 23, 1987. [20:34] This is the New Moon in a lunar phase family cycle (LPFC) that will unfold over the coming three years. The First Quarter (first action point) of this LPFC will be on June 21, 2026, at 0º32' Libra. The Full Moon (awareness point) is on March 22, 2027, at 1º35' Libra. And the Last Quarter Moon (final action point) is on December 20, 2027, at 28º14' Virgo. [22:39] Void-of-Course (VOC) Moon periods. On Tue. Sep. 16, the Moon in Cancer trines Saturn (8:14 pm PDT), goes VOC for 2 hours, 6 minutes, and then enters Leeeeeooooo (10:20 pm PDT). Fortify your living space via a cleansing ritual. [23:48] On Fri. Sep. 19, the Moon in Leo conjoins Venus (5:21 am PDT). It's VOC for 2 minutes, then enters Virgo (5:23 am PDT). Try a quick, fun morning activity such as doodling, brainstorming ideas, pulling a tarot card, or some sort of puzzle to get the creative juices flowing. [24:52] On Sun. Sep. 21 (12:54 pm PDT), the Moon in Virgo conjoins the Sun. It's VOC for 1 hour 47 minutes and enters Libra (2:41 pm PDT). This is the New Moon Solar Eclipse. “Devotion” is the word for this VOC Moon period. [25:32] This week's listener question is available as a YouTube video! Keep those questions flowing! If health underpins great work, why do so many workplaces treat it like a perk? In this episode, Paul and Matt examine the gap between surface-level wellness offerings and real employee needs—then share how to shift toward readiness and resilience without overhauling everything. Five Key Learnings: Lived experience (burnout, caregiving, fatigue) doesn't match company messaging. Health is still treated as “individual responsibility,” not a team design issue. Small moves like RMS (Rest, Movement, Socializing) beat flashy programs. Teams can change norms—leaders just have to start modeling them. Expect the shift: from “treat it when it breaks” to “design for health.” Resources mentioned in this episode: Billion Minds Readiness ModelRMS Stack (Rest, Movement, Socializing)Humanity Working is brought to you by BillionMinds - the company that makes employees ready for the Future of Work.BillionMinds helps companies be ready for the future of work by developing adaptable, resilient employees. Developmental relationship-based interventions have been around for many years, but have not received the level of attention that intervention approaches based on applied behavior analysis have received. Drs. Josh Feder and Andrea Davis, along with a number of colleagues, including Barry, are currently involved in collaborative efforts to bring greater awareness and funding to DRBI interventions. They discuss the justification and research basis for the work currently being undertaken to provide families with greater options for supporting their children's development.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In this curated selection from the Happy Space Podcast, I'm bringing back voices that challenge, inspire, and expand our thinking about designing for inclusion and accessibility. These encore episodes highlight conversations that continue to resonate—on neurodiversity, workplace design, and the small shifts that can make a big difference. Whether you're tuning in for the first time or revisiting a favourite, I hope these episodes offer fresh insight into how thoughtful design can help everyone show up and perform at their best.Author of the Canary Code, Ludmila Praslova discusses how moral injury can cause autistic burnout, and how dignity plays a part in setting boundaries in neurodiverse workplaces. Ludmila Praslova, the author of The Canary Code, discusses the common misconceptions about autism, the importance of recognizing female and high-functioning presentations of autism, and the challenges faced by those seeking diagnosis and acceptance. This episode touches on authenticity, moral injury, and the need for accommodations at work. She also shares about her work on the concept of dignity and how it's imperative to setting boundaries and better understanding social situations involving neurodivergent individuals. Finally, she talks about the implications of the DSM-V's categorizations, and practical advice for organizations to move forward in their DEI evolution. Ludmila N. Praslova Ph.D., SHRM-SCP is the author of “The Canary Code: A Guide to Neurodiversity, Dignity, and Intersectional Belonging at Work” (Berrett-Koehler Publishers, April 2024) and the member of the Thinkers50 Radar 2024 cohort of global management thinkers most likely to impact workplaces. She is a Professor of Graduate Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Accreditation Liaison Officer at Vanguard University of Southern California. With over 25 years of experience in developing talent-rich organizations, she is a global inclusive talent strategy expert with deep knowledge of global diversity and neurodiversity. Her current consulting is focused on creating organizational systems for inclusion and wellbeing and providing neuroinclusion training and support to organizations such as Amazon, Bank of America, and MIT. Dr. Praslova is also the editor of “Evidence-Based Organizational Practices for Diversity, Inclusion, Belonging and Equity” (Cambridge Scholars, 2023) and the special issue of the Consulting Psychology Journal: Practice and Research, “Disability inclusion in the workplace: From “accommodation” to inclusive organizational design.” She regularly writes for Fast Company, Harvard Business Review and Psychology Today, and is the first person to have published in Harvard Business Review from an autistic perspective.CHAPTERS7:00 Clare's self-diagnosis of autism8:15 Women and the misunderstanding of autism 10:48 Autistic and neurodiverse traits12:00 Masking and Ludmila's journey with autism17:47 Why there are so many autistic actors19:50 How moral injury affects autistic burnout21:58 The consequences of moral injury for neurodivergent individuals24:11 Autistic burnout vs. regular burnout28:20 What can leaders do to create a better work culture?32:30 What is behind a leader's need to control?36:45 The need for more conscious social interactions in the workplace39:10 Socializing and masking with autism43:02 How to honor your own dignity44:19 How dignity can help establish boundaries at work46:12 How do we navigate the growing neurodivergent population?48:53 Autistic people and how empathy is expressed57:12 The medical model of diagnosis in autism01:06:04 The Canary Code and where you can find itLINKS

Monday Morning Madhouse:Tox Talk 5 Very in depth discussion about sexuality being a factor while ttrying to talk someone but, not the way you'd think. For example: (A straight girl goes to a bar with her guy friend who happens to be gay. She wants to talk to a striaght guy at the bar but her gay friend is also interested in the same person. But the guy the girl is interested in is straight and wouldn't give her gay friend a chance anyway. Should she feel bad for her friend and not talk to the guyor still try and talk to the guy?) Very good editon of Tox Talk.Monday Madhouse - April 28, 2025
