Family preservation activist Katie Burns walks us through the history of adoption in the states. Years of tireless research after her own forced adoption led her to uncover the often dark and disturbing past of this industry. In order to have a more ethical future, we need to know adoption's origins.Adoption History in America1850s to 1970s:https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/daughter-origins-adoption-america/https://pages.uoregon.edu/adoption/index.htmlhttps://www.americanadoptions.com/adoption/history-of-adoption#:~:text=The%20history%20of%20adoption%20is,with%20willing%20and%20waiting%20parents.https://babyscoopera.com/http://www.nativepartnership.org/site/PageServer?pagename=airc_hist_boardingschoolshttps://theacademy.sdsu.edu/elearning/icwa-elearning-bias-media-context/story_content/external_files/ApologyCWLA.pdfhttps://www.nabsw.org/page/History#:~:text=NABSW%20was%20created%20during%20the,work%20organization%20at%20the%20time.https://socialwelfare.library.vcu.edu/programs/child-welfarechild-labor/florence-crittenton-homes-history/#:~:text=Labor%2C%20Organizations%2C%20Programs-,Florence%20Crittenton%20Homes%3A%20A%20History,at%20the%20age%20of%20four.https://www.ylc.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Adoption-Law.pdfhttps://hometownbyhandlebar.com/?p=32125https://www.mprnews.org/story/2017/02/13/cultural-impact-of-the-indian-adoption-project-still-felt-todayhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.5406/womgenfamcol.1.2.0143https://nyu.universitypressscholarship.com/view/10.18574/nyu/9781479872329.001.0001/upso-9781479872329-chapter-003https://www.amazon.com/dp/195514916X/ref=syn_sd_onsite_desktop_261?psc=1&uh_it=905b1a8ef53b47ab949a1ff8180c629c_CT&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFaOFQ2UlNDNVI2UzAmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA1MzEyMDkxSlZUWks3SUdRQkRGJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA2NzgyMTUzVVhGRDBBSUtXR1ZXJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c2Rfb25zaXRlX2Rlc2t0b3AmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl
In this episode, Katie Burns shares her heartbreaking story of facing an unintended pregnancy, and being coerced into an adoption she didn't want, by the very people who should've been protecting her. While the trauma caused through this still reverberate in both her life and her now adult daughter's, Katie has been able to use her experience to become the very advocate she needed herself at 18. She currently runs a resource page for expectant mothers called “The Family Preservation Project,” and also serves on the board of “Saving Our Sisters” (SOS).
