Why is it so hard for America to build things? Bridges take years to construct. Housing costs are soaring. Transit systems are crumbling. And we're struggling to update our infrastructure to prepare for the climate crisis. Even when there's broad agreement that something needs to be done, collective action feels impossible. Why is that? Today's guest is Marc Dunkelman, author of Why Nothing Works, a book about the modern American experience of watching government fail. He argues that by giving too many people the power to say “no,” we've stymied our collective progress. Marc and Sean discuss an inherent tension in American politics: the need for effective, centralized power and a deep fear of its abuse. They trace how that tension has played out across American history, from the clashes between Jefferson and Hamilton, through the New Deal's Tennessee Valley Authority, to the backlash against figures like Robert Moses. Marc argues that our current system — born out of a reaction to too much top-down authority during the late 20th century — has produced paralysis, dysfunction, and a deep distrust of government. Host: Sean Illing (@SeanIlling) Guest: Guest: Marc Dunkelman (@MarcDunkelman), author of Why Nothing Works: Who Killed Progress — and How to Bring It Back. We would love to hear from you. Renee Good, a 37-year-old Minnesotan mother, is just one of several victims of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) violence in recent months. But her death marks a turning point in the discourse around state violence. How will her name and story be used by politicians and protestors? And how does her story line up with other moments of government violence throughout American history?Brittany is joined by Abené Clayton, the lead reporter for the Guns and Lies in America series at The Guardian. Brittany and Abené unpack the importance of this moment, how Good's death compares to other deaths at the hands of the federal government, and how the narrative around her death is already messier than it should be.Support Public Media. SEASON 4 EPISODE 49: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: BREAK the cover-up of the ICE murder of Renee Good: 1) INVESTIGATE regardless -on the state and county levels. 2) INDICT and ARREST the ICE shooter, Jonathan Ross (and the Trump militia members who were with him as accessories). 3) IMPEACH Homeland Security Chief Kristi Noem, Ice Director Todd Lyons (and Border Czar Tom Homan. Representative Angie Craig says now the Noem impeachment will proceed). 4) Iif Noem or any other ICE or DHS official continues to stonewall local investigators seeking justice for the murdered women, indict and arrest them for OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE. 5) When the Senate takes up the resolution to fund the government past January 30, all Democrats must refuse to vote yes unless ICE is neutered (and Trump's magic war wand as well). This is a pivotal moment in American history. ICE's reaction to its crimes has been to double down. It is now hiding behind this empty, corrupt demand that we all need to improve the “tone” and when they say “we” they mean “you” and when they say “tone” they mean “any criticism at all.” Tom Homan went on Fox and actually added to this bankrupt bromide, NEW threats. "There will be more bloodshed unless we decrease the hateful rhetoric.” Translation: if you keep criticizing us, we will keep shooting you. The acting ICE chief, Lyons, may be even worse. He is daring Minnesota to enforce its laws. “My message to the sheriff is: try and arrest my folks, let’s see what happens.” What should happen is the sheriff serving warrants to Ross, Noem, Lyons and the rest of their ICE street gang - with the Minnesota National Guard standing behind the sheriff. ALSO: Why are these fascists so obsessed with killing Americans? It may be the guns. Not the access to them: the physical impact on a shooter's brain by firing a weapon, as established by new tests. Plus updates on Trump doubling down on his Epstein Cover-up, Jim Jordan's moronic decision to let Jack Smith testify in public, and some Trump madness we should encourage. He wants to repel from a helicopter like Navy Seals. Yes please! Do it! B-Block (32:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: How Will Chamberlain, Laura Loomer, Matt Walsh and the philosopher of MAGA, Catturd, 180'd on action in places like Venezuela once they realized Trump had 540'd. The headline says 'Visas for Only Fans Models' but the article does not. And the only person who thinks Stephen A. Smith is a Democrat or a viable presidential candidate is Stephen A. Smith. Up to now it's been funny and a little sad. But now that he has defended the murder of Renee Good and sucked up to Trump and MAGA, it has to be said: to save the brand that they and a lot of people worked their lives to build, Disney chief Bob Iger and ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro have to fire Smith. Oh and - accordingly - I've re-named Stephen. C-Block (45:00) MONDAYS WITH THURBER: Only fitting. Next month it will have been a startling 95 years since James Thurber prophesied the advent of Trump. What would happen when America finally lionized its Worst? "The Greatest Man In The World."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the second installment of a two-parter with former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul on American foreign policy in Donald Trump's second term, Mike and John look back on 2025 and ahead to 2026, focusing particularly on the president's approach to Russia, Ukraine, and China. McFaul also discusses his new book, “Autocrats vs. Democrats," which examines the struggle between authoritarianism and classical liberalism among the world's great powers, and argues that this is also the central battle taking place within the United States in the Trump 2.0 era. For over 200 years, American presidents have repeatedly justified intervention as 'protection' - from the Monroe Doctrine of the 1820s, Teddy Roosevelt at the turn of the 20th century, to Richard Nixon and George H.W. Bush during the Cold War. America has a long history of using formal, informal, military and economic power to influence and exert control in its neighbouring countries and beyond. Dan is joined by Professor Daniel Immerwahr, historian and author of How to Hide an Empire: The Greater United States, to explore the ways in which America has exerted control and shaped the political landscape in the western hemisphere for two centuries. They examine the parallels with historic interventions like the 1954 coup in Guatemala and the 1989 invasion of Panama. Leah, Kate, and Melissa preview January's major SCOTUS cases, including disputes over trans kids' participation in team sports, a concealed-carry ban in Hawaii, and Trump's attempt to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. The hosts are then joined by Georgetown Law Professor Marty Lederman to break down the administration's flimsy legal case for the regime-change operation in Venezuela, as well as the Court's shadow docket ruling on the federalization and deployment of the National Guard in Chicago. THE CRISIS OF THE THIRD CENTURY AND AMERICAN PARALLELS Colleagues Gaius and Germanicus, Friends of History Debating Society, Londinium, 92 AD. Gaius and Germanicus explore Rome's "Crisis of the Third Century," where military coups and a fractured empire nearly caused total collapse. Germanicus draws parallels to the currently divided US elite and constitutional order, suggesting America might eventually require a "Tetrarchy"—a split management system—to survive its polarization. After debating historical alternatives like the US remaining a Britishdominion, they end with optimism. Citing Rome's miraculous recovery and the rise of Constantinople, they speculate America may eventually build a new, perhaps "space-based," fortress to ensure its longevity. NUMBER 31940
Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning, television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Keith Milner. Purpose of the Interview The interview aims to inspire aspiring entrepreneurs by sharing Keith Milner’s journey from corporate America to entrepreneurship. It emphasizes discipline, leadership, risk-taking, and strategies for building generational wealth, particularly for underrepresented communities. Key Takeaways Foundational Lessons from Childhood Growing up in a disciplined, hardworking family taught Keith accountability, integrity, and the principle of choices and consequences. Education was highly valued in his household, shaping his drive for success. Corporate vs. Entrepreneurial Mindset Corporate careers can feel secure but are often riskier because you lack control over your destiny. Entrepreneurship offers greater control and potential for generational wealth. Leadership and Teamwork Lessons from sports—teamwork, discipline, and leadership—translate directly into business success. Establishing a common goal and coaching employees is crucial, but underperformers must eventually be let go. Risk and Value Many African-Americans view entrepreneurship as risky, but Keith argues it’s less risky than employment in an at-will state. Success depends on creating value that customers are willing to pay for. Franchising Journey Relationships opened doors to Jersey Mike’s franchise ownership. Jared Yates Sexton joins Anthony Davis to discuss the collapse of neoliberalism and the rise of authoritarian capitalism in the United States. How decades of wealth redistribution, weakened democracy, and global exploitation have created the conditions for Trump's rise and and how neoliberalism evolved into oligarchic control, why cost-of-living pressures fuel political anger, and the dangers of normalizing cruelty, white nationalism, and repression. Entrepreneurship requires hands-on involvement—Keith still works in his stores when needed. Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs Adopt a growth mindset and positive attitude. Follow the Five P’s: Plan, Prepare, Produce, Pivot, Persevere. Understand that entrepreneurship is a daily grind—“Every morning in the jungle, the lion wakes up running.” Notable Quotes On discipline and accountability:“If you said you were going to do something, you did it. If you were told to do something, you got it done.” On choices:“We make choices every day, and if you don’t make the right choice, there are consequences.” On entrepreneurship vs. employment:“Entrepreneurship and small business ownership is the best way to create generational wealth.” On leadership:“There are very few things in life you can do alone. You need people, you need a team.” On success formula:“You control the inputs, and therefore you can charge what you want—as long as you generate enough value.” On entrepreneurial mindset:“Plan, Prepare, Produce, Pivot, Persevere.” Swahili proverb:“Every morning in the jungle, the lion wakes up running… The question becomes, who’s going to run the fastest?” #SHMS #STRAW #BESTSteve Harvey Morning Show Online: http://www.steveharveyfm.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It was very cold in our house. I was the first one awake that morning, and as I scampered through our personal Arctic I checked the thermometer. It said 50 degrees. I called Mr. Furnace to come. In the meantime, I turned on the kitchen stove, opened the door and sat in front of it to have some personal spiritual time. My kids told me that with my eyes closed it looked like I was praying to the stove! Great! Well, Mr. Furnace came and he finally figured it out. See, the problem was not the thermometer, it was the thermostat. Because the thermometer was just reflecting the temperature. It was the thermostat, which of course, controlled the temperature! I'm Ron Hutchcraft, and I want to have A Word With You today about "Thermostat or Thermometer?" The fact is, you may be a thermometer, or might be a thermostat. Thermometer people tend to reflect the temperature of the people around them. "If you're hot, I'm hot. If you're cool, I'm cool. If you're nice, I'm nice. If you yell, I yell." Thermometer. What most of us would like to be is a thermostat - someone who controls the temperature in our situation. Your family sure needs for you to be a thermostat. If everyone's a thermometer, hello chaos. The people you work with, your friends - they need someone who is under control, who doesn't go off with the stress, who is steady and caring and peaceful. Those thermostat people are rare, and so they're valuable. My friend, Mark, runs a rapidly growing, highly pressurized company that services some of America's largest corporations. In the heat of battle one day, one of Mark's execs came in and said, "Man, how do you handle this pressure?" Well, Mark is kind of like the eye of a hurricane - the center of calm in this swirling storm. Actually, Mark explained his thermostatic peace in a word - "Jesus." Our word for today from the Word of God comes from the words of Jesus Himself in John 14:27. He is talking to His closest friends on the most stressful night of His life, just before His arrest and execution. And it's on the eve of what is about to be the most stressful chapter in their lives. If stressful is a fair description of your life right now, these words from Jesus are for you, too. Here's what He says. "Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." I'm sure I don't have to make a list of the uncertainties in our world that could make any of our hearts "troubled" or "afraid" right now. There's plenty of them, and you probably have a pretty impressive list of your own. But in the midst of combat conditions, Jesus says, "I give you My peace, like nothing, like no one on earth can give you." A love-relationship with the Son of God is the secret of my friend Mark's peace under pressure. It's a peace that I have experienced over and over again from hospital rooms, to gravesides, to doctor's offices, to airplanes in trouble, to out-of-control weeks. The anchor, I'll tell you, is that relationship with Jesus Christ. And when you know you belong to Him, you can be a thermostat instead of a thermometer because you know you have an identity, you have a security, you have a love that is rooted in something you cannot lose. The freedom of knowing that whatever's at stake in this situation isn't all there is. You're anchored to Jesus Christ, His unloseable love, and His unstoppable plans. It's the relationship you were made for, that you've been missing because your sin has cut you off from your Creator. It's the relationship that Jesus died to give you by paying for your sin on His cross. Invite Him into that storm of your life and let Him replace it with His peace. If you want this relationship and to be sure you belong to Him, our website is there to help. It's ANewStory.com. Check it out today. Jesus makes a thermometer person into a thermostat, who has this inner power... His inner power to set a whole new temperature. And right now He's just waiting for your invitation.

Will the Supreme Court destroy what remains of the Voting Rights Act? How much influence will America's 250th anniversary have on the midterm elections? We had a chaotic start to the new year with Donald Trump invading Venezuela and kidnapping dictator Nicolás Maduro. We're joined by The Atlantic's David Frum to help us make sense of and give us important context on the situation. Trump says that America is running the country and might be there for years to come. It sounds more like old-fashioned imperialism than a democratic transition.Trump has openly admitted that this is about oil. He says he's taking Venezuelan oil and putting it into a special account controlled only by the President. Isn't it the job of Congress to appropriate how money is spent in this country? We also discuss the administration's plans for Greenland. Are we actually prepared to seize it from our NATO ally, Denmark? Trump says yes. How crazy is that?!Al also shares his thoughts on the horrific situation in his home state of Minnesota as ICE's reckless aggression led to the murder of Renee Good.READ David Frum in The Atlantic: https://www.theatlantic.com/author/david-frum/LISTEN to The David Frum Show: https://www.theatlantic.com/podcasts/the-david-frum-show/SUPPORT THE SHOW BY VISITING OUR SPONSORS:Bundle up with some warm weather clothes from Quince! In this episode, Jillian is joined by David Harris Jr., a leading conservative voice known for fusing Christian faith with blunt cultural and political commentary. With millions following his work, David doesn't dodge the hard questions about religion, morality, accountability, and where America is headed next. We break down: Why morals are collapsing in America How faith became a political battleground Whether belief is healing the nation—or tearing it apart What happens when a country loses its moral anchor America is in moral free fall. Institutions are failing. Truth is blurred. Power is shifting fast. People are feeling more lost, overwhelmed, and alone than they have in decades. As the country spirals, faith has moved from personal belief to a cultural and political weapon. Is religion the answer to personal peace and a principled life or another tool weaponized to divide us?

In war, dependable access to oil is as important as dependable access to kinetic arms. Access to ample reliable flows of oil represents a key strategic interest to the United States. Western Canada sends over 4 million barrels a day of heavy crude to American refiners. But now with access to the massive flows of Venezuelan crude following the Trump-led ousting of Nicolas Maduro last week, the U.S. may soon no longer need to rely on Canada for this vital strategic resource. For months, Canada used its vast reserve of natural resources as leverage in its tariff negotiations with the U.S. Not anymore. “If the Monroe Doctrine warned Europeans to stay out of the Western Hemisphere and the Roosevelt Corollary established American intervention therein, then the ‘Trump Corollary' has put a finer, and more economic point on the matter that's best summed up in two words: America first,” argues Chief Heritage Foundation Economist E.J. The Packers season ended in the most gut-wrenching way imaginable. After dominating the Bears in the first half and building what looked like an insurmountable lead, Green Bay collapsed in historic fashion, surrendering 25 points in the fourth quarter to lose their playoff game to their most hated rival. In this raw, emotional reaction, we break down everything that went wrong: the offensive line's complete meltdown with Rasheed Walker's disastrous performance, Brandon McManus missing seven points worth of kicks, and a defense that appeared to simply stop trying in the fourth quarter. We ask the hard questions about Matt LaFleur's future extension, Jeff Hafley's potential departure, and whether this team has a fundamental problem that goes beyond talent. This marks five consecutive losses to end the season, and not a single win since losing Micah Parsons and Zach Tom to injury. Looking ahead, we discuss what the offseason holds, including draft coverage, roster evaluations, and the painful work of figuring out what went so catastrophically wrong. Like so many writers of his generation, he fell hard for the pulp magazines as a kid, discovering worlds that were stranger, bolder, and more imaginative than anything around him. Over his career, Farmer wrote almost 60 novels and over 100 short stories, constantly pushing the boundaries of what science fiction could talk about — from religion and sexuality to identity and mythology. He won multiple Hugo Awards, including one for his groundbreaking novel To Your Scattered Bodies Go, and later received the Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction Writers of America.Philip José Farmer was hugely influential because he refused to play it safe. He expanded the emotional and intellectual range of science fiction — and today, we're finally welcoming his voice to the Lost Sci-Fi universe with a story that first appeared in Fantastic Universe magazine in October 1954. America is currently engaged in an existential war for survival against powerful forces and the 92% of the world population that wishes to wipe out the first world generally and America specifically. Currently this war is not “hot,” meaning it's not being fought with armies wielding military weapons of violence. And may we all wish that it never achieves that level.Instead, we are engaged in a “soft” existential war for survival, in which the chess pieces are being moved into position, often using subterfuge, and ALWAYS accompanied by powerful and sophisticated propaganda wielded by our enemies.America was once a master of such propaganda, especially during our American Revolutionary War for independence. In fact, today, is the anniversary of the January 10, 1776 publication of the essay “Common Sense” by American propagandist Thomas Paine, which argued powerfully for America to split from the British monarch and establish a free Republic. What I'd like to cover today, however, is a different Thomas Paine essay that better illustrates the vital importance of propaganda to the good guys winning—his publication of “The American Crisis” published at the end of that same year, on December 19, 1776.That December the peoples who would form America were in desperate straits, having experienced much military failure in their battles with Britain, the most powerful military force on the planet at the time, and General George Washington's troops were dwindling in both numbers and morale. Paine's “American Crisis” was so powerful a piece of pro-American propaganda, however, that Washington immediately had it read aloud to his suffering troops—and just days later these same soldiers would cross the frozen Delaware on Christmas night and slay Hessian mercenaries employed by the British in their sleep. That victorious Battle of Trenton would be followed by another resounding victory a few days later in the Battle of Princeton, completely turning the tide of the revolution in America's favor. America could use a bit of Thomas Paine today, as we face our own existential travails against the tens of millions of aliens invading our shores, looting our treasury, degrading our culture, and striving to obliterate our first-world existence from the face of the globe.Let's talk about the nature and vital importance of propaganda, and read through Paine's “American Crisis,” in celebration of this great American's passion and genius for the emerging republic of the United States.

To be a good cult leader, you'll need some natural charisma and a pathological desire for control … and according to Rob Benvie, it might also help if you're a bit of a buffoon. Rob explores this personality mix in his latest novel, The Damagers. The book follows a 15-year-old girl named Zina in 1950s America. After a tragic event, she becomes entangled in an isolated spiritual commune ... in other words, a cult. At the centre of the story is Zina's own desire for power, which puts her in a complicated struggle with the cult's magnetic but foolish leader. This week, Rob joins Mattea Roach to talk about why cult stories resonate today and what it means to have a vision for the way we live together.Liked this conversation? The world is shifting fast and this episode dives straight into the heart of the storm. As mass protests erupt across Iran, shocking footage shows Iranian students openly rejecting regime slogans like “Death to Israel” and “Death to America.” At the same time, Russia is reportedly evacuating its embassy from Israel, signaling that something far bigger may be unfolding behind the scenes. In this powerful episode of The Land of Israel Guys Podcast, we unpack: What the Iranian protests really mean—and whether the regime is losing control Why Russia's embassy evacuation from Israel could signal an imminent escalation How Israel, the United States, and President Trump may be coordinating major strategic moves The collapse of Iran's proxy network, including Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Venezuela The rise of a spiritual and ideological war beneath the military conflict How foreign funding, media influence, and cultural shifts in the West are shaping this global battle Why biblical prophecy may be converging with modern geopolitics in real time This is not just another Middle East update. The Decade Project is an ongoing One Heat Minute Productions Patreon exclusive podcast looking back at the films released ten years ago to reflect on what continues to resonate and what's ripe for rediscovery. The third year being released on the main podcast feed is the films of 2015. To hear a fantastic chorus of guests and I unpack the films of 2016 in 2026, subscribe to our Patreon here for as little as $1 a month. In the latest episode, I talk with my friend, the brilliant and talented author Jordan Harper, about - for better or worse - the MOST American man, Taylor Sheridan and his instinct for mining America's deepest fears in SICARIO.Jordan HarperJordan Harper is the Edgar-award-winning author of SHE RIDES SHOTGUN, THE LAST KING OF CALIFORNIA, EVERYBODY KNOWS, and the short story collection LOVE AND OTHER WOUNDS.One Heat Minute ProductionsWEBSITE: oneheatminute.comTWITTER: @OneBlakeMinute & @OHMPodsMERCH: https://www.teepublic.com/en-au/stores/one-heat-minute-productionsSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/one-heat-minute-productions/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
