    PTS03 - Jimmy Daley

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 22, 2017 32:30

A banjo field recording from late summer, 2017. Recorded at Jimmy's childhood home in Springwood, Blue Mountains. Jimmy Daley is a driving force in the well-known Sydney bluegrass band, The Morrisons. He writes a sizeable portion of the material, shares vocal duties with eponymous bandleader, James Morrison, and just generally plays ALL the instruments. I caught up with him the night before The Morrison's hometown album launch in Katoomba.  We talked through a broad range of deeply pressing banjo related topics such as Jimmy's rough guide to respectful cultural appropriation, our mutual love of Paul Simon and the song writing benefits of Sydney's housing affordability crisis.

A banjo field recording from mid Summer, 2017. Recorded in the kitchen of Paddy's place in Katoomba, Blue Mountains. A purveyor of the three finger style, Paddy falls sharply at the intersection of various musical influences including traditional Irish music, bluegrass and old time, cow punk and rock - to name a few. He is co-instigator of well-known Blue Mountains outfit, Lime and Steel, as well as pretty much a permanent fixture at folk festivals across the land. A banjo field recording from late spring, 2016. Recorded in the backyard of Richard's childhood home in Blacktown, Western Sydney. Banjo, lots of birds, a few cars, a lawnmower, a power saw, a plane overhead, some wind - actually, too much wind. But, that’s suburban Sydney on a sunny Saturday afternoon after all. Richard is a well-known banjoist about town in Sydney. You’ll catch him performing across town as himself as well as in his duo - Golden Whistler - or at the regular Bluegrass and Traditional Country Music Association meet ups in Sydney town.
