In this episode, I recap some of my adventures I experienced on my recent family vacation to Australia, the land down under! We traveled to Sydney, Australia, then to Cairns, Australia, and then wrapped it up at Katoomba, Australia. We did several outdoor adventures and tours throughout our trip, seeing Kangaroos, wombats, wallabies, fruit bats (flying fox), crocodiles, and even the elusive platypus. We toured the Daintree Rainforest, snorkeled the great barrier reef, and hiked thru the “Blue Mountains” of the Katoomba, Australia. I also treated myself to fishing trip in Cairns, where I caught some interesting fish. Hear all about it. Then we bring it back home to talk about chasing tarpon here in the local waters of deep South Texas. Think about your list of the 10 best things about Katoomba. It's not hard to fill the list with World Heritage Listing, Scenic World, Echo Point, Garguree (The Gully) and the Cultural Centre at the top of the list. But the problem of derelict buildings and empty shopfronts brought into focus by the state of the Paragon Cafe cannot be ignored. In this interview on Rights, Rorts and Rants presenters Nick Franklin and Peter Lammiman talk with Jim Angel a former mayor who worked on a revitalisation of Katoomba including building the Cultural Centre about looking for solutions for Katoomba. On Eavesdroppin' comedy podcast this week, Geordie and Michelle look at two cults with very different agendas… Can you slap yourself to health? When Hongchi Xiao quit his life as a successful banker to instead spread the word as a guru of alternative therapy, Paida Lajin, people flocked to his workshops. Essentially, you slap yourself hard which removes the illnesses of your body to encourage healing and health. Except Xiao told diabetics to bin their medicine and keep slapping away, with tragic consequences. Listen now to find out more about this medical cult, what happened to some of his devotees and where Xiao is now…Would you eat at a cult café? The Yellow Deli in Katoomba, Australia, has a fantastic reputation for delicious food in a lovely atmosphere – but the proceeds fund an international cult called The 12 Tribes, which supports severe child discipline and female subordination. Listen now to learn more about the cult and why that Yellow Deli sandwich might leave a sour taste in your mouth…So pop on your headphones, grab a brown lemonade and join Geordie & Michelle for this week's episode, plus chit-chat about The White Lotus, the new Mogwai album and more, only on Eavesdroppin' podcast. Politics in the Pub at the Family Hotel in Katoomba on 15th June 2024 featured two speakers on the topic of Tax Justice. Richard Denniss of the Australia Institute showed us how the spending choices made in government budgets inform us about government priorities and how tax payers can be deceived into thinking we can't afford "nice things". Michael Whaites of the NSW Nurses and Midwives Association, and formerly of Public Services International told us about the shocking findings of inquiries conducted by PSI and CICTAR into the privatisation of public services. My guest today has a long history of working and playing in some of the most rugged and remote parts of NSW. So, with a few days up his sleeve, a bit of research and the right kind of skills and experience behind him, he set off for another steep n' deep trip through Kanangra Boyd National Park, bound for Katoomba on the traditional K2K route.WARNING: The K2K route is described online as a classic 3 day trip in the southern Blue Mountains. This description was written before the fires and floods since 2019. It cannot be compared with other walks of a similar length such as the Six Foot Track, which is on well-defined management and fire trails. The K2K has always been a challenging walk that pushes the Australian Walking Track Grading System of 1-5, into an unofficial 6. That was then (before the fires) and now, it's an even more punishing route.I've written about this route before with this rescue of Chini who shared her written story.NPWS Alert re: K2K routeHeraclitus was a Greek philosopher, born around 500 BC. Now, I'm wondering if he was a bit of a bushwalker and a lover of nature, cos he's the one who said, “No man ever steps in the same river twice. For it's not the same river and he's not the same man.”He's also the one credited with saying, “the only constant is change.”Nowhere is this more evident than in nature: The turning of the seasons, the changes this brings in life cycles of plants and animals, erosion from weather, climate change, bushfires, my greying hair, you name it.And for those of us who love being out on (or off) the track, it's something that feels more obvious in recent years: there's more people, more bushfires, weather events and landslides are changing the landscapes that we love to spend time in.Learnings from this episode: Having a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) as a critical part of your packing. The importance of having a 'place to go' within yourself (eg. meditation, mindfulness, faith, etc) when faced with a crisis, helping you remain calm and make wise decisions. The value of having past experience in similar terrain you expect to encounter. Just because a track is marked online or on apps, doesn't meant it exists in the landscape. Other than the official land manager apps (eg: NPWS App) data can be out of date and user reviews or descriptions extremely subjective. Apps like AllTrails, etc should be used in conjunction with other research and navigation skills. If it's been a while between longer or hard walks, consider your overall health from other factors.Helpful Links: Episode 6 - PLBs and other satellite communication devices // My interview with Linda Berriman from AMSA (the AU govt agency responsible for rescues in Australia) Creatine Kinase (CK) testing

The Twelve Tribes are a Christian fundamentalist sect with followers all around the world, from Germany to America and even here in Australia. Their cafes in Katoomba and Picton have rave reviews but behind these storefronts is a community masked in secrecy and disturbing allegations. Journalist Tim Elliot has spent over a decade investigating their practices. He joins us on today's episode to discuss what he's uncovered. Kia ora e te whānau. This week Eugene and Matt speak to Anna McKenna, the 2022 Ultra Trail Australia 100km champion. This is a brilliant conversation about making your way back to running and finding the joy in fellowship and the company that a running club can bring. We talk racing, surviving the pandemic as an employee of a major airline and the fact that whilst, yes, Katoomba is pretty ace, Chamonix is acer. Possibly this is due to the relative amounts of Courtney Dauwalter in Cham vz. The ‘toomba. Triumphant and full of gratitude, and unflinching when discussing challenges, Anna McKenna truly is a champion. We also run down an epic Stuff You Should know and a massive shout out to the little race that probably shouldn't: Crush the Cargill. Well played, men. Well played. Kia ora e te whānau. This week Eugene and Matt take a sweet as tiki tour into the backblocks when we jump on a waka rererangi (airplane) and head over to the seriously epic and epically beautiful Blue Mountains for the 14th Ultra Trail Australia. In addition to being privileged enough to be part of the commentary team with local boys Ben Berriman and Dave Stewart we got a ton of good running in, became involved with several standoffs with Katoomba's most aggressive fauna (everything), ran out of superlatives for the utter majesty of the place and generally felt like we were at a trail running summer camp. We've got all the race results, run down's of the days, and speak to a bunch of runners including women's 100km winner Anna McKenna. To finish off we speak with Katoomba local Pia Storey, who took on the 50km to raise money for Lifeline after the death of her brother, who had lived with struggle in regards to his mental health. Enjoy. Royce Simmons is an Australian former NRL Player & Coach. During his playing career he represented the Penrith Panthers, NSW Blues and Australian Kangaroos. After he finished playing he moved into the coaching world and ended up coaching the Panthers, Hull FC, St Helens and later worked as an assistant coach to Tim Sheens at Wests Tigers. When Penrith Panthers' rugby league legend Royce Simmons disclosed in January 2022 that, at age 61, he had been diagnosed with dementia the previous year, many were in shock.Typically, the former Kangaroos hooker immediately set about not only exploring what he required to do to slow the dreaded condition's progress, his thoughts turned to assisting others who were affected by the disease – not just sufferers but their supporting families too.Within months, Royce's Big Walk (a registered charity foundation) as a reality and the support he has received by not just many VIPs of rugby league, but the Penrith district's community and beyond has been extraordinary. So, among other fund-raising initiatives for Royce's designated not-for-profit support organisation, Dementia Australia, Royce will walk – from May 17-26 – the 300km from his small hometown of Gooloogong (population less than 300) through Cowra, Carcoar, Blayney, Bathurst, Katoomba and across the Blue Mountains, arriving pre-match at Penrith's Bluebet Stadium the night the Panthers take on North Queensland Cowboys.Along the way there will be several sportsman's dinners or lunches, and a coaching clinic, to help raise funds for local rugby league on the route. You can support Royce's mission, Dementia Australia, junior rugby league and, in particular, the families who have or will go through what Royce himself is confronting, by donating or attending some of the functions from May 17-26.The tough-as-nails former Panthers skipper is tackling his Alzheimer's diagnosis just as he would any other opponent on the footy field – head on and with the benefit of his ‘team' and their supporters as his major priority. If you would like to donate and support Royce please visit the link below. https://www.memorywalk.com.au/event/royces-big-walk

In this episode, Taryn chats to the man behind our Book Club partner, The Wandering Bookseller. Karl shares about his love for books and how The Wandering Bookseller came to be. He also speaks about his struggle with anxiety and God's hand in helping him deeply grasp his love and forgiveness. Karl and The Wandering Bookseller are again offering 15% off all The Lydia Project book club books for 2022. *** Karl Grice has been matching books with people – and people with books – since the turn of the century. He started The Wandering Bookseller to provide hand-picked bookstalls for Christian events across Australia. Karl also curates an indie bookshop in Katoomba, with a piano hidden upstairs, poetry readings and second-hand chairs. Karl and his wife Naomi live with their four children, a few chooks, a vegetable garden and, yes, even more books!"
