Room 8 Radio Tower was established by the middle school English Language Arts Department at Northern Light School in Oakland, California. Students in grades 6, 7 & 8 host episodes of a series that reviews books read and discussed in their classes. Series are completely scripted and authored by students, and are produced by a student and teacher team. Each episode offers a fresh take on books read in a group setting in ELA classes throughout the school year. Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/room8radiotower/support

This episode contains discussions of violence and death; strong language; and trigger warnings (gunshot sounds). The Day Tajon Got Shot is the story of a black teenager who is gunned down by a white police officer. According to the authors, the book asks the question, "What really happens in a community when a black youth is the victim of violence by police?" The book is unique in the sense that each chapter tells the story of a single event from the perspective of everyone involved, including the victim, the officer, and their friends and family. The eighth grade class at Northern Light School read The Day Tajon Got Shot for Black History Month and have offered an in-depth look at the story and how it helps readers to understand black boys, police brutality, and the tangled web it weaves. The Day Tajon Got Shot also looks at the historic Black Lives Matter Movement, and how The Day Tajon Got Shot is a call to action for everyone--white people, other people of color, anyone who knows how important justice and equality is--to get involved, stand up, and do what is right. The Day Tajon Got Shot is available in paperback from Shout Mouse Press.
