Bassist, singer and songwriter Richard “RW” Grigsby, has logged several lifetimes on the road, and his early rock and roll roots (Rome, GA near the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains) burst out like another famous Richard from Georgia on “Road Scholar,” his story of a musician who has spent too much time on the road, working for too little pay. It's sung by Red's Blues drummer Tim Wilbur, a pro's pro (2017 Sacramento Music Awards and Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame member), who brought creative percussion ideas -- maracas AND the entire group thigh-slapping percussion. “We sat in chairs in a circle and slapped our thighs at certain points in the song to add accent,” laughs Beth. “Jackknifed” (co-authored with fellow road warrior Mark Hummel) continues the road theme with bio notes from their Golden State-Lone Star Blues Revue adventures. RW played with Carlene Carter, Gary Primich, Mike Morgan & The Crawl, Finger Taylor, Mark Hummel's Golden State Lone Star Revue w/Anson Funderburgh & Little Charlie, JamesCotton & all the Harmonica Blowouts since 2008-2019( Magic, Lee Oskar, Kim Wilson, Billy Boy, Jason Ricci, Carey Bell, Lazy Lester, Estrin, John Primer, Duke, Billy Flynn, Elvin, Gravenities, Ron Thompson, Harman, Rod Piazza & many others) 2014 Grammy-nominated and Blues Music Award (BMA) winner bassist RW Grigsby has been playing since he was 14 years old and began his professional career when still a teenager. He's toured the U.S., Canada and Europe since the '80s, and currently juggles playing with Red's Blues, Mark Hummel & the Blues Survivors and The Golden State/Lone Star Blues Revue. He played and recorded with Texas blues stars Gary Primich and Black Top Records' Mike Morgan and the Crawl in the 1990s. RW is the bassist on the 2014 Grammy-nominated and BMA-winning CD, Remembering Little Walter. He was nominated for a BMA “Best Bassist” Award in 2017 and was inducted into the Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame in 2018.

THE CHARLES MANSON EFFECT Charles Manson was born Charles Wilson Milles Maddox on November 12, 1934, to Kathleen Maddox, a 16-year-old girl alcoholic prostitute. In 1945 she married William Manson a low level petty theif and in short order the marriage ended. Little Charlie was placed in a boys reform school at the age of 12. Rejected in his attempts to return to his mother, Charles was soon living on the streets and getting by through petty crime. Still just a teenager, in 1951, Manson began spending time in prison. Early on, before he discovered the benefits of being a “model” prisoner, he was considered dangerous. He would eventually spend half of the first 32 years of his life behind bars. When he wasn't incarcerated, he also attended reform schools. Manson was described by probation reports as suffering from a “marked degree of rejection, instability, and psychic trauma” and “constantly striving for status and securing some kind of love.” Other descriptions included “unpredictable” and “safe only under supervision.” His various offenses included pimping and passing stolen checks, and in 1961, he was sent to McNeil Island prison in Washington State for 10 years. It was while he was incarcerated that Manson learned how to read music and play the guitar. He was released from prison on March 21, 1967, and moved to San Francisco. The Manson Family Cult “The Family” was a group of around 100 followers of Manson who shared his passion for an unconventional lifestyle and habitual use of hallucinogenic drugs, such as LSD and magic mushrooms. The Manson Family eventually moved from San Francisco to a deserted ranch in the San Fernando Valley. Manson's followers also included a small, hard-core unit of impressionable young girls. They began to believe, without question, Manson's claims that he was Jesus and his prophecies of a race war. Charles Manson and "Helter Skelter" Manson was influenced not only by drugs, but also by art works and music of the time, most notably The Beatles song “Helter Skelter” from their 1968 White Album. Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders was later the title of a best-selling book about Manson and his crimes. Paul McCartney has said that the playground slide in “Helter Skelter” was a metaphor for the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. Manson, however, interpreted the song's lyrics as incitation to begin a race war. He turned to the album and lyrics to justify his scheme and guide his followers to murder. The Manson Family—including Manson and his young, loyal disciples—is thought to have carried out some 35 murders. Most of their cases were never tried, in part for lack of evidence. The perpetrators had also already been sentenced to life for brutally killing seven people—actor Sharon Tate and wealthy supermarket executive Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary, among them—on back-to-back nights in August 1969. On August 9, 1969, Manson gathered a group of followers to carry out his massacre among Hollywood's elite and “beautiful people.” The first of Manson's victims was murdered at the home director Roman Polanski had rented, located at 10050 Cielo Drive in Benedict Canyon, an area just north of Beverly Hills. Polanski was away in London shooting a film, and four soon-to-be victims had just returned home from dinner when they were attacked. Although Manson himself took no part in the actual killings, he directed four of his most obedient followers—Charles “Tex” Watson, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and Linda Kasabian—to the address and directed them to kill everyone. According to one of the Family member's statements, the Polanski household had been targeted because it represented the showbiz world that had rejected Manson. Charles Manson died in prison on November 19, 2019 One Week after his 83rd Birthday. November 12, 1934,
Estrin was born in San Francisco, California in 1949, and fell in love with blues after his sister presented him with Ray Charles' The Genius Sings The Blues when he was 12. He began playing harmonica at age 15, and by age 18 was beginning to work professionally. Early in his career he played with Lowell Fulson, Z.Z. Hill, Travis Phillips, and Fillmore Slim. Estrin names Sonny Boy Williamson II, Little Walter Jacobs and Baby Boy Warren as key inspirations. He played with and was mentored by Rodger Collins (whose 45rpm recordings include "She's Looking Good" and "Foxy Girls" In Oakland). Estrin moved to Chicago when he was 19 and worked with bluesmen Sam Lay, Johnny Littlejohn, Eddie Taylor and Johnny Young. He met and sat in with Muddy Waters at the Sutherland Hotel in Chicago. He told the Sacramento Bee, "Muddy started shaking his finger in my face and said, ‘You outta sight, boy! You play like a man! I know that sound. That's my sound.'" Muddy tried to hire Estrin as a sideman but Estrin did not receive the phone call, and moved back to the Bay Area. He met guitarist Charlie Baty in 1973 and they created Little Charlie & the Nightcats based in Sacramento, California. Estrin fronted Little Charlie & the Nightcats for 30 years and performed around the world. They were nominated four times for the Blues Music Award for Band of the Year. In 2008, Baty retired from touring. Guitarist Kid Andersen joined Estrin with previous band members Hansen and Farrell and they formed Rick Estrin & The Nightcats that same year. wwwmarkhummel.com www.patreon.com/markhummel

In 1874, just nine years after President Lincoln was slain, the nation was again shocked by a terrible event. It was not the death of a great leader but the disappearance of a previously unknown four-year-old name Charles Brewster Ross. “Little Charlie Ross” – as Americans would soon know him – was stolen away in what became the first kidnapping for ransom in the history of the United States.Check out our updated website and sign up for our newsletter at AmericanHauntingsPodcast.comCheck out our merch at AmericanHauntingsClothing.comFollow us on Twitter @AmerHauntsPod, @TroyTaylor13, @CodyBeckSTLFollow us on Instagram @AmericanHauntingsPodcast, @TroyTaylorgram, @CodyBeckSTLSubscribe for more bonus content on our Patreon pageThis episode was written by Troy TaylorProduced and edited by Cody BeckSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/american-hauntings-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Oskar SalaPiece Played - Diagram - Five Short Pieces for TrautoniumGerman inventor/composer Oskar Sala is best known for his role in developing the Trautonium: one of the earliest electronic instruments and a contemporary of the French Ondes Martenot and Russian theremin. While the Trautonium would eventually be viewed as a relic of electronic music's past, the instrument's tonal quality and expressive capabilities remain sadly unparalleled in the technology that followed. Nearly 70 years after its creation, its legacy seemed highly uncertain, as Sala was the only one capable of playing it.Born in Berlin in 1910, Oskar Sala was introduced to the Trautonium in 1929. That year, while studying under composer Paul Hindemith, Sala attended a demonstration of the instrument given by its inventor, Friedrich Trautwein. The student soon began working alongside Trautwein, undergoing a crash course in electronics to develop the prototype into an acceptable model. The new instrument was unveiled at a christening performance of Hindemith's "Trio Pieces for Three Trautonia" at the music academy in Berlin. Resembling a simultaneously archaic/futuristic version of the piano, the Trautonium replaces keys with two wires that run the length of the keyboard. These wires, hovering above metal rails, are what the musician plays, altering the subsequent tones via a multitude of dials and switches. The initial, overwhelming success of the instrument is rather surprising given the political environment of the time. Nazi Germany had begun the ethnic and cultural cleansing that would drive many artists (including Hindemith) out of the country. Not only did Sala's Trautonium escape being squelched, the government actually provided funding for additional models including the Radio Trautonium (showcased across German airwaves on a weekly program), the Volks-Trautonium (a failed attempt at a household model), and the portable Concert-Trautonium, which Sala took on tour.Following the Second World War, with Trautwein having all but relinquished control of the instrument, Sala developed the Mixture-Trautonium, a revised model which gave the musician the ability to produce musical undertones. The 1950s found Sala busy composing, producing works for television ads and feature films, and performing with fellow Hindemith student Harald Genzmer on the new model. Yet Sala's general failure to collaborate with his electronic music contemporaries probably contributed to his relative obscurity. He did, however, receive his 15 minutes of fame. In 1961, unsatisfied with the effects sound technicians turned up for his film The Birds, director Alfred Hitchcock enlisted Sala's help. Pleased with the results, Hitchcock turned over the film's score (a non-musical construction) to the composer. In the electronic boom that followed in the 1970s, the Trautonium attracted attention from Krautrock acts Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk. In 1987 Sala was honored with the Filmband in Gold for his soundtrack work. As the century drew to a close, Sala (approaching his 90th birthday) spent his days diligently practicing, composing, and experimenting on the Mixture-Trautonium from a studio near his home. A staggering 600-plus reels of tape are said to exist in the composer's personal vault. In the late 1990s, Germany's Fax label issued two collections of Sala performances: My Fascinating Instrument (1995) and Subharmonic Mixtures (1997). ~ Nathan BushTrautoniumhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mzc3d_qcNYsRick Estrin awards2013 Blues Music Award best instrumentalist harmonica 1994 Blues Muisc AwardSong of the year My Next Ex-wife2020 Blues Music Award Instrumentalist harmonicaRick Estrin and the NightcatsMembersRick Estrin Harmonica,...

Rick Estrin joins me on episode 52.Rick grew up in San Francisco and starting sitting in with bands in the city. He was friends with Jerry Portnoy, who persuaded him to spend some time in Chicago. Here he met many of the harmonica greats, and missed the golden opportunity for the harmonica chair in the Muddy Waters band. It turned out this wasn't a bad thing though, as Rick forged his own path with Little Charlie & The Nightcats (later Rick Estrin & The Nightcats). A band in which he has played harmonica, sung and wrote most of the lyrics for well over 40 years. And with great success as the band has won many Blues Music Awards, including for Rick's harmonica playing and songwriting prowess.Links:Rick's Website:http://www.rickestrin.comInstructional DVD is listed at the bottom of this page:https://rickestrin.com/musicEP Booster pedal:https://xotic.us/effects/ep-booster/Videos:Rick singing with Little Charlie & The Nightcats in 1981:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyEYO1Pkosg‘Contemporary' album video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZY1tkJRrx9Q&t=9sI Met Her On The Blues Cruise:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqS_nL2jvHE&t=55sRick Estrin & The Nightcats at World Harmonica Festival, 2013:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sccRtO1mJfw&t=6sPodcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations: If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link:https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBAlso check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains many of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQ

Thanks for listening to Pacific St Blues & Americana for the past 31 years. It's been a blast! It's still a blast. Here's over two hours of basically uninterrupted, carefully curated Christmas tracks which, ideally, gives you a soundtrack you can listen to at home, in the car, at the gym, or while you're at work. So go ahead and take this opportunity to relax, downshift a bit during this otherwise busy time of year, hear and share some great music, and get focused on the real things that ought to be important in our lives. Возвращаемся к новой музыке. В течении 5-ти подкастов мы будем знакомится с самыми важными блюзами и рутс-релизами. По списку: 1.Один из самых популярных гитаристов Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters презентовали альбом «Rise Up», который записали на Stony Plain Records. Несмотря на состояние здоровья Ronnie Earl, музыкант продолжает выпускать альбомы и «Rise Up» это 27 пластинка в его дискографии. 2. Sugar Ray & The Bluetones Featuring Little Charlie Baty - «Too Far From The Bar». Альбом появился 18 сентября. Мы вспоминали Little Charlie в марте, которого не стало в этот период, и это стало большой утратой для блюзового общества. Послушаем 2 трека. 3. Легенды американского блюза Elvin Bishop & Charlie Musselwhite записали первый совместный альбом «100 Years Of Blues», который вышел на знаменитом Чикагском лейбле Alligator Records. Kim Wilson «Take me Back! The Bigtone Sessions», которая записана на студии Bigtone. Песню «Take me Back!» 6.Напоследок у нас австралийский релиз от Josh Teskey & Ash Grunwald - «Push the Blues Away». Альбом был записан на аналоговую пленку и включает в себя микс оригинальных песен обоих исполнителей, а также два кавера.

Episode 2: Beyond Brave takes a look at Christopher Paul Curtis’ The Journey of Little Charlie and the roots of slavery in the south, midwest and Canada during the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. The Journey of Little Charlie is a story of the great courage and heroism found in an unlikely protagonist who, upon encountering historic injustice, chooses to make a change--even if it comes at a sacrifice. The Journey of Little Charlie is a scholastic paperback. To learn more about Christopher Paul Curtis, visit nobodybutcurtis.com. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/room8radiotower/support

At the 1959 Campmeeting, Bro. Charles Riggs begins his sermon by asking his wife, Sis. Lottie, to join him in the pulpit. Together they read and expound on the true House of God, punctuated by three songs and lively exhortation. I marvel at the freedom these brothers and sisters display in their worship. This recording is a glimpse into Christ's Sanctified Holy Church as it continued to transition from a travelling group to what we know today. God has been good to us, or, as Bro Charles Riggs said, "God has always taken good care of Little Charlie." Praise God! Bro. David Copeland

With his wily and unforgettable original songs and his hipster, street-smart vocals, no one on the blues scene writes or sings like harmonica ace Rick Estrin. No one looks like him either, as Estrin is always dressed to the nines, sporting his trademark pencil-line mustache and pompadour haircut. The San Francisco native cut his teeth as a teen with ZZ Hill, Fillmore Slim, Travis Phillips and Roger Collins before finding a place with the legendary west coast hallmark band, Little Charlie in the Night Cats during the 70’s. Rick became the band leader when Charlie departed in 2008 and released his fourth studio effort for Chicago’s famed Alligator records, “Groovin’ in Greaseland” which features 13 new tracks recorded in the home studio of bandmate wonder kid, Kid Anderson who is a rising blues star in his own right. Rick is self-described as ‘peculiar’ and has won several awards for his extraordinary harmonica talent.

In the first full week after the Memorial Day weekend in the US, we're full-on into unofficial summer, full of sunny skies, long days, and a generally pretty upbeat mood. And, we break out the ‘57 Cadillac convertible of the blues for a long full-speed road trip down Highway 61. Little Charlie and the Nightcats, Robert Ward, Mark Hummel, Roy Rogers, and Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers are going to make it nearly impossible to avoid moving around in your seat. It's a good the the ‘57 has huge bench seats, because you won't be able to sit still. Don't buckle in, just let it all out for another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

Kelowna, British Columbia's Rick Halisheff - a.k.a. Poppa Dawg - turns in a solid set of traditional Blues penned by the excellent guitarist and singer. 'Nobody Here Feels Sorry For You' bounces between Hokum and Jump; 'Croc Talkin', a greasy, minor-key funk instrumental features some of the snarkiest wah tone ever waxed; and 'This Man' is a towering deep soul number. 'I Ain't Leavin' shuffles with Stevie Ray Vaughan power, '1, 2, Gone' swings like Ronnie Earl's best work and 'Cool Little Number' is reminiscent of Little Charlie and Rick Estrin's hipper stuff. Hailing originally from Edmonton, Alberta, Rick 'Poppa Dawg' Halisheff has played for 20 yrs in a variety of bands and has backed up such artists as Kenny 'Blues Boss' Wayne, Michael Pickett, Harpdog Brown, Sherman 'Tank' Doucette, and Juno Award winner Dave Nicol. For 10 years, he has been the bandleader and frontman for the very successful Western Canadian Blues band Dogskin Suit. In that time, they recorded 2 CDs, received airplay in Canada, and around the World including CBC's Saturday Night Blues and won numerous awards including Best Local Band 2001 & 2002 and an Honour In The Arts award. They have shared the stage as opening acts and fellow musicians with Sonny Rhodes, Michale Pickett, Tony Coleman(BB King), Fathead, Frankie Lee, Johnny V, Jeff Healey, Jim Byrnes, Donnie McDougall(The Guess Who), Danny McBride(Chris DeBurg), Shirley King, The Powder Blues, Terry Edmunds and many others.
