The house built around diversity, equity and inclusion is coming apart brick by brick. Since last summer, brands, retailers, holding companies and, most recently the federal government, have been dismantling (or retooling) DEI initiatives, many of which were built up after the murder of George Floyd and subsequent Black Lives Matter Movement of 2020. The “diversity” portion of diversity, equity and inclusion has become divisive, impacting multicultural marketing agencies, Black-owned brands and diverse publications. And they're starting to feel the ripple effects, according to Kirk McDonald, CEO of Sundial Media Group, holding company for brands like Essence magazine, Afropunk festival and Refinery29. Although, he said, it's too early to tell the full impact DEI's retooling (or rebrand) will have on the industry in terms of media spend, marketing budgets or consumer habits. McDonald recently sat down with the Digiday Podcast to talk about how Sundial's diverse publications, geared toward women and other historically marginalized communities, are navigating the pushback.

Whether it was on the Selma bridge, in Cairo, the stadiums of South Africa, the legislative chambers of England and India, or the executive halls of America, President Obama strove to reshape the mores of a globalized society away from separation, extremism, oppression, and bigotry towards a politic that stood for not only human rights, but also an understanding that rights can only be fostered through a sort of collective understanding of agency and responsibility that opened the door to future possibilities. Most importantly, President Obama not only acted as Uniter in Chief during a time of social unrest, racial tension, and turmoil, he also was the main leader for tumultuous social reform that brought the United States of America out of the worst recession from 2008-2011 since the Great Depression. Additionally, President Obama acted not only as a social reformer, but also as an advocate for political and social democracy through the period of the Arab Spring. Through his reform efforts and advocacy, he provided an inherent meaning to millions in the Arab world with aspirations towards self-determination for democratic governance while also navigating and espousing equality for millions in America on the question of economic inequality through the Occupy Wall Street Movement that started in 2011 as well as highlighting racial inequality that was brought to the forefront of American political reality through the Black Lives Matter Movement that was founded during his presidency in 2013.

March is Women's History Month, an opportunity to celebrate the numerous contributions that women have made to American society. In this episode of the UCI Podcast, we'll shine a spotlight on women who have worked tirelessly to bring attention to injustice via the Black Lives Matter movement and others like it. Begun in 2013 after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, BLM encompasses yearslong campaigns across several anti-carceral organizations striving to end state violence against African Americans. Jordie Davies, UCI assistant professor of political science, pays special attention to BLM as she examines the foundations of social movements that have emerged in response to anti-Blackness for a new book. She'll teach us the history behind BLM and anti-carceral groups catalyzed by women, forecast what may be on the horizon, and discuss her recent publication on the process of building solidarity and sharing power in multiracial coalitions. Episode 264: How to Tell Your Story - Interview Amanda EdgarWelcome to the LYS Podcast! Every person I interview on this show has a story. They share those stories with us - the wins, the losses, the heartbreak and the learning. Man! There are some great stories on this podcast. As I've spoken with people - in general - about their stories, often people say, “I don't have a story. I just have a regular old life. Nothing to hear here.” My guest today is Amanda Edgar. After a life in academia she decided to leave the university and founded Page and Podium Press, a publishing company that helps people share their stories and create world-changing books. Tune in as I talk with Amanda about finding and sharing your stories.Bio:Amanda Edgar is an award winning author, ghostwriter, book coach and founder of Page and Podium Press. She is the co-author of the forthcoming Summer of 2020: George Floyd and the Resurgence of the Black Lives Matter Movement. She has been invited to speak at organizations such as FedEx and the US Department of State where she shares philosophy on issues of identity, and socially conscious storytelling.Tune into the audio program to hear us talk about questions like:Tell me your story - the juicy bits - and how did you come to be a story expertWhat if someone wants to write their memoir - why should they? how do they start? How do we use our personal stories to empower others?I'm told that you like to talk about the science of story telling and how we can make our stories land every time. Tell me about that.Let's talk about vulnerability - some of the most powerful stories are those that we are the most afraid to share…how vulnerable is too vulnerable? Where is that line? When you help someone write a book about themselves how do you generally organize it - is it stories by theme, or chronologically, what does that look like?I know you primarily work with leaders who want to share and publish their stories to support their teams and career, but what advice do you have for regular folks who are considering writing their personal stories? How can someone find you if they want to work with you?How to contact Amanda:www.pageandpodium.com/checklistwww.pageandpodium.comWRAP UP:I've been working on my father's life history. He's still alive so I can ask him lots of questions, which is huge, but it's no small task trying to put a life down on the page. I've also seen life history companies that send out a question to their clients and their clients write about it and then they compile the stories into a history, one story at a time. I've found as I've studied story that we use stories - the function of stories is varied - we use them to show that we are part of a group - like someone telling a story about how they rode a certain mountain bike trail to illustrate their prowess in biking. We use stories to warn - telling a story of narrowly escaping a tight situation in a dark park is a warning for others not to walk in dark parks alone. We share stories to teach, for example sharing a personal story about how you learned a lesson - what did you learn from your divorce, let's say. I could go on. But as you consider your stories - sharing them and organizing them, recording them or publishing them, let me assure you that YOU do have a story. Your story is not any more regular than anyone else - we all have a heroes journey. We'll see you in two weeks for our Quick Chat episode. Please share this episode with someone who is thinking about writing or sharing their story and hope on

Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will

317 How Our Stories Frame Us   Taking the time to reflect on our stories and consider how they frame us and others is a uniquely powerful tool for storytellers. When we take a step back to look at how and why we are telling our stories we can see the lessons and the messages that are built into our stories and we can see just how important our stories are. In this episode Sarah Elkins and Amanda Edgar discuss how important our stories are, how they shape us, and how through time they are subject to change. Amanda brings intelligence, kindness, and humor to the conversation, which brings life and warmth to the episode. Highlights Things happen when we least expect them to. Your stories matter, you just need to tell them. Be mindful of how you describe people and events in your stories. If there is an inkling of revenge or blame when you're writing your story, you need to take a step back and ask yourself why you want to tell it.   Quotes “One of the things I hear people say so often is, 'Well who am I to tell my story? No one cares who I am. I'm not Britney Spears or Michelle Obama, nobody cares about my story.' And I always tell them they don't care about your story because they don't know it yet.” “To me there is also such a powerful mindset piece, that hitting and exceeding that then suddenly so many more things are possible than you had ever imagined. Because you get so in your head about this goal you want to hit and I think it can be really counterproductive, there's something to me about having that extra tool or that extra boost that people then get a little second wind and they hit these goals they hadn't imagined.” Dear listeners, now it's your turn: What is it that you're holding onto that maybe a little space can get you to the place of learning and sharing lessons so that other people don't have to learn the hard way? What are you going to write down, your story, that you can observe differently and reframe it so you can learn the lesson you need to learn from it? And which of your family members are you going to reach out to with a cellphone and a record button to hear some of their stories?  And, as always, thank you for listening.  Mentioned in this episode The Ignorant Man's Son by Victor James Hill  About Amanda Amanda is an award-winning author and the CEO of Page and Podium Press, a publishing house that offers coaching, writing, and publishing services to self-defined leaders of all types--political leaders, industry thought leaders, community leaders, and leadership consultants. Her company focuses on projects that inspire readers to take action to build their communities and to fearlessly shape society for a better tomorrow. In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Omar Little, Jimmy McNulty, Stringer Bell, Snot Boogie. If you recognize these names, you are probably a fan of the HBO series The Wire. June 2022 marked 20 years since the series premiere. It ran for five seasons, following the lives of the cops, criminals, political players, and everyday folks caught up in Baltimore's often futile war on drugs. Many argue that The Wire is the best television show ever created and has earned praise for its realistic, humanizing, multi-dimensional portrayal of Black characters. But 20 years on, the conversation about policing in Black communities has changed. The deaths of Freddie Gray, George Floyd, and many others after encounters with police and the rise of the Black Lives Matter Movement have brought about more public scrutiny, debate, and criticism of the police.Listen to more Consider This at these links: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, NPR.org, or anywhere you get your podcasts.

As the nation faces increasing political resistance to social justice reform in the aftermath of the Black Lives Matter Movement, Dr. Guy-Sheftall reflected upon the importance of returning to Lorde's work as a resource for imagining and building social transformations in society, electoral politics, the criminal justice system, and the academy. This event took place on April 25, 2023. A full transcript is forthcoming. Learn more: https://hds.harvard.edu/

In this episode, Lisa is joined by Jason Rantz, author and radio host, to discuss how radical left policies and the COVID-19 pandemic have played a significant role in the deterioration of our cities. He highlighted two major impacts of these policies: making cities less safe and happy, and dictating how people should live.  One of the most striking points Rantz made was about the belief on the left that arresting criminals is somehow racist. This belief has gained prominence since the death of George Floyd and the mainstreaming of the Black Lives Matter movement. Rantz shared his experiences during the CHOP Era in Seattle, where he witnessed crimes being committed and violence escalating, despite the media portraying it as a peaceful street fair. This is part 2 of round table conversations recorded by our student producers in the wake of the murder of George Floyd by police on May 25, 2020. If you haven't already, we encourage you to go back to part 1 and listen to that one first, then come back to this one. Also be kind to yourself and to our students who vulnerably and openly shared what were pretty fresh, raw emotions as the aftermath of this incident was unfolding. It is important to remember the context — this was recoding in 2020 during the COVID pandemic lockdown. A divisive president was in the White House, that the majority of our students (but not all) felt anguish over. The Black Lives Matter Movement had gained visibility, and was convtroversial in certain circles. Riots were breaking out across the country, including in Chicago, and doing major damage to property and there were also peaceful demonstrations of anger, outrage, and support for the citizens, families, and communities most impacted by racial violence. We were hearing cries of "defund the police" without totally being clear what that meant.  You will hear opinions and statements you agree with AND ones you will disagree with. We definitely encourage you to seek out and support commemorative events and grassroots organizations in your local community and take care of yourself during this time. Thank you for listening. May 25th commemorates a terrible and sad anniversary for the United States and that is the murder of George Floyd by police officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As a practice of remembrance, we are releasing two round table conversations our student producers recorded in the wake of the tragedy the year it happened, 2020. It is important to remember the context — this was during the COVID pandemic lockdown. We were all on edge. You will hear opinions and statements you agree with AND ones you will disagree with. These conversations captured the raw emotions, ideas, and thoughts of our students in the midst of this chaotic time. We were meeting for our program for the first time online instead of in a classroom together and our producers' sibliings and families were living life in the background while we were recording (yes you will hear some of them). We hope that you will listen with compassion and without judgment. And we hope that rather than breaking open old wounds, listening will help you to acknowledge, process, and continue to do the work of healing the discomfort and pain that likely you still feel over this period of time.  And also to remember that these issues have not yet been solved. There is still work to do. We definitely encourage you to seek out and support commemorative events and grassroots organizations in your local community and take care of yourself during this time. Episode Notes Welcome back to the Future of Figure Skating. My guest today is Asher Hill, who is a choreographer, commentator, and one of the founders of the Figure Skating Diversity and Inclusion Alliance. With his previous partner ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kharis_Ralph)[Kharis Ralph, Asher was the 2008 Canadian national junior champion in ice dance, and went to the 2010 World Championships.  Asher is a vocal advocate for racial justice. In 2020, he called out Skate Canada for making an essentially empty statement in response to the murder of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter Movement. The statement was hypocritical to Asher, who had filed an official misconduct complaint with Skate Canada more than a year before, highlighting a number of instances spanning five years where a co-worker at his figure skating club was abusive with racist, homophobic, and misogynistic language. Asher's comments sparked much of the progress that's been made around diversity and inclusion in Canadian skating. Omar Little, Jimmy McNulty, Stringer Bell, Snot Boogie. If you recognize these names, you are probably a fan of the HBO series The Wire. This month marks 20 years since the series premiere. The deaths of Freddie Gray, George Floyd, and many others after encounters with police and the rise of the Black Lives Matter Movement have brought about more public scrutiny, debate, and criticism of the police.
