Play Episode Listen Later Apr 5, 2015 42:19

In our first episode we take a look at the civilization of Angkor and how the history of research in Cambodia has influenced what we know about the Angkorian Empire.  We begin with a basic question, "What is Angkor?".  We move on to discuss the myth that Angkor was "discovered" by a French explorer, Henri Mouhot, and what the French didn't understand about how the Cambodian's understood their past.  In the second part of the show we examine the history of French colonial work at Angkor and how this work has laid the foundation most of what we know about the Angkorian past.  Lastly, we discuss recent archaeological work at Angkor, including an interview with Dr. Damian Evans on recent LIDAR work done in the Angkor region.  Read more on this episode at: http://thisancientlife.com/?p=76
