This video will inform Mississippi teachers about the stages of English language acquisition, what to expect at each stage, and what strategies are particularly effective in each stage. Suggested classroom assessment accommodations also will be provided, along with information on factors that can affect the rate of language acquisition.
This presentation provides an overview of Mississippi’s EL population, as well as state and federal requirements for serving EL students. An overview of some common EL program formats, and information on how to create emotionally safe classroom environments for newcomer EL students also is offered.
In part two of this overview presentation, information on building family-school connections with EL families is shared. Additionally, educators can learn more about the Silent Period many EL students experience, and receive tips designed to get EL students talking in the classroom and beyond.
