In the past four podcasts, we have been examining various approaches for soloing over a ii7 Imaj7 vamp. In podcasts 18 through 20, the jam track was a straight 1/8 Latin groove. In podcast 21, you were given an additional jam track which was a straight 1/16 funk groove. This podcast will introduce two shuffle 1/8 jam tracks. In this episode we will now extend each chord by a third. The Em7 (1, b3, 5, b7) will become Em9 (1, b3, 5, b7, 9). The Dmaj7 (1, 3, 5, 7) will become Dmaj9 (1, 3, 5, 7, 9). Each of these extended chords (diatonic 9th chords) can be viewed as a slash chord. Em9 = Gmaj7/E and Dmaj9 = F#m7/D. In the previous 17 podcasts, we have examined various approaches for soloing over major and minor family chords. All the jam tracks have been static vamps which allowed you to focus on the tonality of the mode (ear training) as well as enabling you to develop facility on your instrument (technique) of the appropriate mode. Now we are going to raise the bar and look at soloing over bi-chordal (two chords with different roots) vamps.
