A reflection on the Coastal Development Forum at ULI Boston 2018. See show notes below - ULI Boston 2018 Coastal Forum Interested in meeting other members active in coastal development and real estate? The Coastal Forum is a member-initiated project to bring together leaders in real estate, land use, and climate resilience to share best practices for coastal development. The Forum offers a dialogue-based setting to analyze trends, share tools and resources, and tour examples of innovative waterfront projects in Boston. Panel 1 – Coastal Development Best Practices: Boston Real Estate Jamie Fay, Board Member, Boston Harbor Now Nick Iselin, General Manager of Boston Development, Lendlease Thomas N. O’Brien, Founding Partner and Managing Director, HYM Investment Group • Regarding development, the speakers mentioned several limitations related to building in this space. One of which was the predicted sea level rise over the next 30 years. Many of the properties would have 1-3 feet of inundation. While this may seem like a design inspiration for all of us designers, the developers in the room saw this as a large risk. Raise the building? Raise the roads surrounding? I think of the Japanese solution of dredging and filling under Yokahama airport as a solution to it sinking. One of the developments boasted its integration of a wetland at the shore line. Panel 2 – Coastal Development Best Practices: Planning and Risk Leigh Fletcher, Managing Partner, Fletcher & Fletcher Greg Lowe, Global Head of Resilience, Aon Jimmy Morales, City Manager, Miami Beach Miami Beach.
