Is there is a difference? What is it? Since the widening of the Democratic tent, a lot of different philosophies have found a cozy home. Learn (sorta-Chrissy got bored and stopped researching) the history of the Progressive party. Learn how Jewelz and Chrissy interpret the difference, and what they are vs what they WISH they would be. Turns out there is a definite difference between the two political ideologies. Chrissy and Jewels don't agree on what one they like the most. Plus- a bonus rant by Chrissy on the electoral college! A common phrase in Chrissy’s social circles is definitely NOT in Jewelz. The idea is such: that people support socially progressive ideas such as gay rights, welfare programs and other progressive issues while also desiring less government spending and oversight. We discuss how to marry up the idea of dreading paying taxes with supporting government programs...or if you can? We also discuss how to navigate conversations with those you love in your life who don’t vote in a way that aligns with the core values that inform your politics. More specifically, how Chrissy engages with Trump supporters in her life. Chrissy is still waiting for Jewelz to bill her for the therapy session that was the end of this episode! When you vote entirely for one party when you go into the ballot box, is that voting straight ticket? Not quite. We break down what voting straight ticket is, why so many of us do it and reasons why some states have outlawed the practice. Chrissy does a very half hearted attempt at an Australian accent while Jewelz admits her slight laziness (like many of us) when she goes to vote, but how unlazy she is in other areas of her life. We both decided that voting is an open book test, so do the research and bring it with you! What is activism without the performance? When does performative activism just become about the performance and your own ego? There's a slippery slope between how we curate our lives online and what our lives, and our activism, looks like without the filter. Throw in a pandemic and activism and it gets even more complicated when we use social media to convey political beliefs. Jewelz and Chrissy discuss the now notorious black square on #blackouttuesday: why Chrissy didn’t post it and Jewelz did. On the flip side, why Chrissy posted a black and white #challengeaccepted while Jewelz didn’t. What does it mean IRL and why we want there to be more dog accounts. The Black Square: Forbes Article The NYTimes article on #challengeaccepted that says it better than we do. Welcome to Amateur Activists! We are two new friends trying to make a difference. Each week, Jewelz Mauro and Chrissy Summers pick a topic that amateurs like us (hopefully) care about and try to get it a little bit less wrong. Getting it right feels like TOO high of a bar for now. As two people who have NOTHING to do with politics, but are interested enough to make a podcast about activism…it begs the question...why aren’t we community organizers? Maybe you share some of the same feelings as us, and hopefully, these feelings don’t stop you from becoming part of the conversation. Thanks for being here.
