Louvre boosts security with 100 cameras and other measures after crown jewels heist

The head of the Louvre Museum said that new security measures are being put in place at the Paris landmark after October's stunning crown jewels heist.  The cameras—some 100 of them—will be up and running by the end of next year, while anti-intrusion systems are expected to already be in place, Louvre director Laurence des Cars said. She described the systems as equipment that will prevent intruders from getting close to the museum buildings but did not offer specifics. The new surveillance cameras will try to ensure “complete protection of the museum's surroundings,” she said. “After the shock, after the emotion, after the assessment, it's time for action” at the world's most visited museum, des Cars told the Committee of Cultural Affairs of the National Assembly. She said it was all part of more than 20 emergency measures that will be implemented. The new measures also include the creation of a “security coordinator” position at the museum, and the job was posted in November, she added. On the day of the heist, it took thieves less than eight minutes to force their way through a window into the Apollo Gallery with the help of a freight lift and steal the 88 million euro ($102 million) trove. Des Cars unveiled some new details about the security breach that allowed the October 19 robbery, saying the power tools used by robbers to cut through the display cases were disc cutters meant for concrete. “It's a method that had not been imagined at all,” she said, referring to the time when the display cases in the Apollo Gallery were replaced in 2019. At the time, they had been designed primarily to counter an attack from inside the museum with weapons, she added. Footage from museum cameras shows that during the robbery, the display cases “held up remarkably well and did not break apart,” she said. “Videos show how difficult it was for the thieves.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

The Duellists (1977) & Top 5 Jewels – honour, obsession, and very stupid men with swordsIn this episode of Bad Dads Film Review, we kick things off with our Top 5 Jewels – a glittering mix of cursed stones, crime magnets and wildly impractical accessories. From the Pink Panther diamond and Uncut Gems' black opal to Titanic's Heart of the Ocean, Baz Luhrmann's blinged-out Great Gatsby, Moana's glowing heart of Te Fiti, and even that doomed chandelier in Only Fools and Horses, we rummage through cinema's treasure box to see which jewels genuinely sparkle and which belong in Claire's Accessories. Then it's back to 1977 for Ridley Scott's stunning directorial debut, The Duellists. Harvey Keitel and Keith Carradine play two French officers locked into a 15–year feud that starts over a petty slight and escalates into a lifelong obsession. We get into:Honour as addiction – why one of them simply cannot let it go, everHow the film turns duelling into a ritual of pride, stubbornness and self-destructionThe way the weapons, stakes and scars escalate with each encounterRidley Scott's eye for light, landscape and costume on a tiny budgetWhy the ending works so well, and what it says about victory, defeat and identityThere's also the usual Bad Dads nonsense: road-trip chat, Christmas hats in December, grumbling about “live-action everything” culture, and a detour into glass onions, murder mysteries and moving house back pain.If you like:Period dramas with gorgeous visuals and nasty steel-on-steel showdownsCharacter studies about pride, masculinity and grudges that outlive their purposeMovie list chaos that jumps from Disney to French noir to jewellery-based heists…then this is a perfect episode to jump into the pod.You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. The Talmud (Ta'anit 21a) teaches the life-attitude of “Gam Zu L'Tovah” – this too is for the good – through the unforgettable figure of Nachum Ish Gamzu, a tzaddik who was blind, without hands or legs, and covered in boils, yet insisted that even his own horrific suffering was for the best because he once delayed helping a starving man and accepted the punishment as atonement. When the Jews sent him to Caesar with a chest of jewels, thieves replaced it with dirt overnight; instead of despairing, Nachum declared “Gam zu l'tovah.” Elijah the Prophet then appeared, convinced Caesar the dirt was Abraham's miraculous earth that turns into swords and arrows, Rome conquered an invincible city, and Nachum returned loaded with even greater treasures – proving that when a person genuinely sees every event as coming from a loving God, even apparent disasters become the vehicle for open miracles. The deeper message is that we live in two dimensions at once: the visible, physical world of cause-and-effect, and the hidden spiritual layer that ultimately controls everything. Money can disappear in a moment, empires rise and fall, health comes and goes – it's all a wheel (galgal chozer). Torah study, Shabbat, and the unwavering declaration “Gam zu l'tovah” are the spiritual coating that protects us and turns even pain, loss, or a chest full of dirt into the greatest blessing. When we live with that faith, like Nachum Ish Gamzu and like the Jewish people protected on all six sides in the desert, Heaven rearranges reality itself so that everything – truly everything – becomes for the good. **Discussion begins at 3:30**Last month, the Louvre museum's Galerie d'Apollon was the target of a brazen heist, with four men fleeing with eight pieces of French Crown Jewels valued at over $100 million USD or €88 million.  Disguised as construction workers and using a truck-mounted lift, two of the suspects accessed a first-floor window, cut into display cases, and fled via motorbikes with their loot.  The heist immediately generated a search for the jewels and suspects, as well as a plethora of other questions.  How did the thieves know exactly which window was weak, which display cases to target, and how to orchestrate a clean, rapid escape?  Was this an opportunistic crime, or a deliberately orchestrated inside job?  Questions also circulated surrounding the lack of surveillance and intrusion protocols despite previous security audits and known vulnerabilities.  With key items still missing and suspects only partially cooperating, theories abound -  Were the four thieves part of a larger network?  And what was the motive?  Could this have been a commissioned theft for a private collector, or were the pieces dismantled, recut, and resold with assistance of an underground network?  Today we'll discuss what we know about the Louvre Heist, focusing on the possibilities of a larger conspiracy. Send us a textSupport the showTheme song by INDA

Today we are joined by two guests to chat about the latest book they have co-written, An Unexpected Grace  Book 3 in the Jewels of Kalispell series. We've visited with both of them individually before, and we're so excited to have them on together today. ABOUT THE AUTHORS Tracie Peterson is the bestselling author of more than 100 novels, both historical and contemporary, with more than 6 million copies sold. She has won the ACFW Lifetime Achievement Award and the Romantic Times Career Achievement Award. Her avid research resonates in her many bestselling series. Tracie and her family make their home in Montana. Kimberley Woodhouse is an award-winning, bestselling author of more than forty fiction and nonfiction books. She has won The Carol Award, The Reader's Choice Award, The Holt Medallion, and has finaled in the Selah Awards and the Spur Awards. She is passionate about Bible study, reading, music, cooking, and pretty-much-all-things-crafty. Kim and her incredible husband of thirty-plus years live in Colorado, where they play golf together, spend time with their kids and grandbaby, and research all the history around them. Co-Writers and Friends It's fascinating what makes a good co-writing team, and Tracie and Kim are no exception. They start the interview by sharing about their process, and how they each contribute to research and writing; but, more than that, they share how their friendship supports them in all areas of their lives. Kalispell, Montana As we discuss the third book in this series, Tracie and Kim share about their time in the northern Montana town of Kalispell. Each of the books features a particular landmark of the historic town -- in this case, the opera house. We learn more about the settling of Montana, what kept Kalispell on the map, and all about their research trip to the opera house. When Callings Clash An Unexpected Grace explores what it means to be called by God to a particular path in life -- and how those callings sometimes clash with those closest to us. Tracie and Kim never neglect the faith thread in their stories, even diving into complex aspects of our faith. A Show-Stealing Side Character When we asked Tracie and Kim if they had a favorite side character in this story, they both immediately came up with the same name. Learn which character stole their hearts (and readers'), and why they've come to love her so much. Connect with Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse at their websites, where you can find their newsletters, blogs, and social media links. About the Book Can unexpected grace lay the foundation for a second chance at love? After a decade away, Parker Bennett returns home with a traveling troupe to perform a play based on Uncle Tom's Cabin at the Kalispell Opera House. Parker has relished his life on the road, but being home awakens long-buried emotions when he encounters his first love, Johanna St. John. He can't help but wonder if there might still be a place for him in her heart. Widowed for three years, Johanna devotes all her time to a demanding toddler, an injured father, and a successful millinery business. After the loss of her husband, she desires to move on, but reconnecting with her past love leaves her unsure of what lies ahead. Both committed to God's distinct calling on their lives, Johanna and Parker struggle to see how their futures can unite, and when strange things start happening around town, their second chance at a life together seems more unlikely than ever. In Spanish, the word “lechuga” means lettuce. But it is also the nickname for a sacred object, a monstrance adorned with so many emeralds that it takes on the color of lettuce. These precious stones come from the famous mines of Colombia, known for centuries by the native populations. Even today, these mines are the source of some of the world's most beautiful emeralds. The monstrance, a masterpiece of goldsmithing and a symbol of the encounter between indigenous and European cultures, has survived time and history. Now a national treasure, it once almost disappeared forever. Without a doubt, it is truly miraculous that this remarkable object can thankfully be still admired today. Two weeks ago on Sunday, October 19th something rather extraordinary happened at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. During broad daylight, thirty minutes after the museum opened for the day, and as hundreds of visitors streamed inside, 8 pieces of France's crown jewel collection valued at an estimated 102 million dollars (but actually priceless when considering historical value) were stolen in less than 8 minutes. I don't often cover current events on this show, I'm usually covering events centuries after they happened, but this one deals with history and it deals with history that I now find myself unable to stop thinking about. My mind races back to the Mona Lisa episode and the 1911 theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre, how that was possible. How this was possible. It fixates on the pieces themselves, these extravagant ostentatious manifestations of the wealth of the elite. Who were these women who sported such opulence? What gave them that right? And it gets stuck, my mind, it gets stuck on another question that not enough people seem to be asking. Where did these gems come from originally? I promise you they didn't come from France. So where did they come from and at whose expense? And, possibly the question that haunts me the most, can you really steal something that was already stolen? Let's fix that.  Support the show! Join the Patreon (patreon.com/historyfixpodcast)Buy some merchBuy Me a CoffeeVenmo @Shea-LaFountaineSources: Artnet "The Glittering Royal History Behind the Louvre's Stolen Jewels"BBC "Everything we know about the Louvre jewelry heist"CBS News "How thieves pulled off a brazen crown jewel heist at the Louvre"ThoughtCo "The Rulers of France: From 840 to Present"Wikipedia "Colonial India"Wikipedia "French Crown Jewels"Shoot me a message! In this Monday Headline Brief of The Wright Report, Bryan covers President Trump's trade breakthroughs in Asia, new peace nominations, Argentina's election victory, France's jewel heist, Gaza's fragile ceasefire, and the rising threat of war in Venezuela.   Trump Secures Major Deals in Asia: The President finalized key agreements with China to curb fentanyl exports, purchase American soybeans, and delay rare earth export controls. The two leaders also agreed on a new ownership plan for TikTok. Trump is meeting regional leaders this week as part of a broader push to reassert U.S. influence in Southeast Asia.   Thailand and Cambodia Sign Peace Accords: After months of diplomacy, Trump brokered a deal between the two nations that ends their border tensions. Both leaders have nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. The White House also announced new tariff cuts on trade with Malaysia and Thailand.   Argentina Turns Right: President Javier Milei's sweeping election victory delivered a major win for Trump's foreign policy and a defeat for socialism in South America. The result validates Trump's $40 billion aid gamble and boosts U.S. influence in the region.   French Crown Jewels Stolen by Migrants: Two suspects from Paris's migrant suburbs were arrested for the $100 million Louvre jewel heist. The theft has reignited France's immigration debate, with populists calling for deportations and leftists insisting on “inclusive empathy.” Bryan says, “It's not just jewels they stole — it's France's history.”   Gaza Ceasefire Under Strain: Hamas continues to withhold bodies of murdered hostages as Trump warns of consequences within 48 hours. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed Western and Arab intelligence stopped a planned massacre of rival Palestinian clans.   U.S. Warships Mass Near Venezuela: The USS Gravely and the Gerald Ford Strike Group have entered the Caribbean alongside elite Marine and Army units. Analysts believe Trump may soon order strikes against Venezuela's narco regime or its foreign backers from Russia, Iran, and China.   Looking Ahead: Bryan previews stories on China's economic collapse, U.S. military advances in drone warfare, and a $130 million private donation funding American troops during the shutdown.   "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." - John 8:32     Keywords: Trump China trade deal fentanyl soybeans, Thailand Cambodia peace accord Nobel nomination, Javier Milei Argentina election victory, Louvre jewel heist migrant suspects, Gaza ceasefire Hamas hostages, Venezuela warships USS Gravely Gerald Ford, Trump Venezuela strikes Russia Iran China, U.S. Southeast Asia trade influence

Join Jim and Greg for the Monday 3 Martini Lunch as they as they have plenty to say about the shocking break-in and horrible security at the Louvre, the U.S. Army's major push into nuclear power, President Trump commuting the sentence of George Santos, and another California controversy that's literally explosive.First, after briefly noting the break-in and alarming security lapse at the Louvre, Jim and Greg turn to the U.S. Army's ambitious plan to install nine small nuclear reactors across key military bases. They applaud the move as a major step toward energy independence and boost warfighting capabilities.Next, they rip President Trump's commutation of convicted serial fraudster and expelled former New York Rep. George Santos after he served almost three months of a seven-year sentence. While still a convicted felon, Santos will no longer need to pay restitution to his victims. Unsurprisingly, Santos says he wants to focus on the future and not the past. Jim says this smells like Trump simply rewarding a political ally. Finally, they tackle the California uproar over closing Interstate 5 during the U.S. Marine Corps' 250th anniversary celebration at Camp Pendleton. Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered the shutdown due to live ordnance, but the Marines insisted it wasn't necessary. California Highway Patrol officers report a small piece of shrapnel damaged one of their vehicles when an explosive went off prematurely. They also rip Newsom for his self-incriminating tweet about the No Kings protests. Please visit our great sponsors:Get 20% off your first purchase of classic menswear.
