Beginning a New Text with Imam al-GhazaliAlhamdulillah, this session marks the beginning of a new text in our weekly Ratib & Reminders gathering. For those based in Perth, you're warmly invited to join us live at Qaswa House every Thursday from 7:00–9:00 p.m. The gathering is open to everyone — men and women, young and old. After returning to Perth, it was a joy to be back at Ratib and to see the continuity of the program while I was away. We recently completed Arba‘ina Shamil fi Insanil Kamil, the 40 hadith on the perfection of Rasulullah ﷺ, and many were able to join the khatam we did live from Madinah. With that chapter completed, we now move into a new phase of study. The most common request I receive is to study the works of Imam al-Ghazali. While his magnum opus Ihya' ‘Ulum al-Din is one of the greatest works in Islamic scholarship, it is also vast — effectively forty books in one. For this reason, rather than beginning something we may struggle to complete, we've chosen a shorter, more focused text that reflects Ghazali's core project.Over the next two sessions we'll introduce this new book and begin exploring its themes. After that, we'll pause for Ramadan, as Ratib will be replaced by nightly taraweeh at Moresby Street Hall, Kensington, where we'll be reading and briefly reflecting on Surah al-A‘raf. After Ramadan, inshaAllah, we'll return to the text and continue the journey.Imam al-Ghazali had a unique way of teaching. He often wrote large, comprehensive works, then summarised them into medium-length texts, and finally into concise versions meant to be memorised. His belief was that knowledge only truly becomes yours when it is internalised — when you live with it, not merely read it. This approach shapes the book we'll be studying together. The text we've chosen is Al-Arba‘in fi Usul al-Din (The 40 Principles of the Religion). Interestingly, it did not begin as a standalone book. It was originally written as an appendix to Jawahir al-Qur'an (The Jewels of the Qur'an). After guiding readers on how to approach and understand the Qur'an, Imam al-Ghazali addressed the next essential question: How do we live the Qur'an? These forty principles were his answer. Recognising their importance, he permitted the work to be published independently. For many, especially those who went through traditional Islamic schooling in places like Malaysia, the content of this book will feel familiar. Much of classical Islamic education has been shaped, directly or indirectly, by Imam al-Ghazali's framework. To understand his project, we stepped back and looked at the foundation of Islamic scholarship itself — Hadith Jibril, often called Umm al-Sunnah. This hadith presents the religion through three inseparable dimensions: Islam, Iman, and Ihsan.Islam refers to the outward actions of the religion — prayer, fasting, zakat, and hajj — which later became formalised as the science of fiqh. Iman addresses belief, engaging the intellect before settling in the heart, and developed into the science of ‘aqidah. Ihsan focuses on spiritual refinement: worshipping Allah as though you see Him, and knowing that He sees you even when you do not.Over time, each of these dimensions developed its own sciences and terminology. These terms did not exist in the Prophet's time, but they were created to preserve clarity and make learning accessible. Tasawwuf, when understood correctly, belongs firmly within this tradition — addressing the heart and soul, not as a replacement for fiqh or ‘aqidah, but as their completion.Imam al-Ghazali lived during a period of deep fragmentation in the Muslim world — politically, intellectually, and spiritually. His life's work was to bring these dimensions back together, showing that a sound religious life cannot survive on law alone, belief alone, or spirituality alone. Each needs the others. It was during a profound personal crisis, after reaching the peak of his academic career, that Ghazali withdrew from public life for years of spiritual seclusion. From this period emerged Ihya' ‘Ulum al-Din, the first work to systematically unite belief, practice, and spiritual purification into a single guide for living Islam.Al-Arba‘in fi Usul al-Din is the distilled essence of that project. It is organised into forty principles: foundations of belief, guidance on practice, dangers on the path, and the means of salvation. This is the text we'll be walking through together, slowly and practically, inshaAllah. This session served as an introduction to both Imam al-Ghazali and the book we'll be studying. We'll continue next week, before pausing for Ramadan, and then resume the journey together. This is a public episode. The music features diverse collaborations from the indie rock group Portugal. The Man, famed singer-songwriter Meshell Ndegeocello, and the experimental hip hop artist Pink Siifu. It explores themes of kinship and collectivism but also pays homage to Galanin's late father – lauded Tlingit silver carver and musician Dave Galanin. In broad daylight on October 19th, 2025, thieves dressed as construction workers targeted the Louvre and vanished with $100 million in royal jewels in about eight minutes. On this episode of Zone 7, Sheryl McCollum is joined by former jewel thief Bryan Sobolewski to lay out exactly how a heist like this gets pulled off, what mistakes crews make when the clock is ticking, and why modern forensics can turn a “perfect” job into an evidence trail. Sobolewski then shares his own history, the losses, and long-term consequences, and why he now speaks publicly to warn others away from choosing a life of crime. Highlights: • (0:00) Sheryl McCollum recounts the Louvre entry point, the freight truck with extended ladder, missing jewels, and why “construction work” is the perfect disguise in a crowded tourist environment • (2:45) Sheryl brings in former jewel thief Bryan Sobolewski to talk about the heist • (4:45) The ladder truck problem: sourcing it, driving it, and the traceability thieves cannot erase • (7:15) The moped getaway and why Paris geography favors two wheels • (8:15) Uninsured jewels and what security should have anticipated • (10:00) How fast cases move when the thieves leave obvious evidence behind • (12:15) Flight attempts, the hired-crew theory, and how the organizer can remain invisible • (16:15) DNA, fingerprints, and trace evidence • (19:15) The gear left behind and why serial numbers and rentals make a heist crew traceable • (24:00) Bryan’s New England backdrop, mob proximity, and “street rules” • (27:45) Bryan recounts his father and brother dying on the same night and the questions he is left to live with • (30:15) Why display cases are harder to break than people think, and how reinforced glass slows thieves down • (40:30) Bryan reflects on the long-term cost of crime, what accountability looks like after prison, and why he warns people away from choosing that life Guest Bio: Bryan Sobolewski is a former jewel thief who speaks publicly about robbery methods, prevention, and the real-world consequences of criminal conviction. He has appeared on Fox's reality series The Snake and on America's Most Wanted. Sobolewski is also a comedian and personal trainer, previously hosted the Family Jewels podcast and authored the book Family Jewels. Enjoying Zone 7?

"We really have exactly 100 years in Detroit,” Arthur Chapman says, and that one line sets the whole episode on fire—because this isn't just jewelry, it's Legacy Black Detroit economics. Arthur walks us from Yazoo City, Mississippi to Black Bottom, where family relationships became the real infrastructure, and where his grandfather “Daddy E” (Eli Chapman) stayed in motion as a serial entrepreneur—record store, bowling alley, whatever it took—before a bus driver's tool of the trade opened the door: pocket watches. When the DSR/DDOT watch vendor retired, Eli didn't hesitate: “I'll give you X amount of dollars for your inventory and for your contract with DDoT,” and a work relationship turned into a supply chain, then into rings, diamonds, and Detroit success. Arthur also names the barriers—“There were no jewelers willing to sell to him”—and the breakthrough moment when a supplier finally said, “As long as your money is green, I'll do business with you.” We hear how safety, community, and partnership mattered—“you are your security”—and why returning home for Arthur was the future: Detroit is the culture that raises the next generation, because the goal isn't just survival, it's to “go a thousand years. Editor Britte is back with another weird random candy they saw on the internet. Your Creeps are trying Kohakutou, a Japanese sweet made with sugar and agar agar, that's crisp on the outside and very much like soft jelly in the middle. They're vegetarian and gluten free. The ones we got are not the viral handmade Silky Gems, but instead Amos 4D Gummy Crystal Jewels, with the bag containing three different double flavors: Strawberry Mango, Green Apple Grape, and Blueberry Grape. Then, Matt gets back into our love of Florida Man since the Creeps talked to each other about the HBO series It's Florida, Man. Matt brings you a lovely tail of assault in a Wendy's drive-thru, in which some idiot named Josh threw a live alligator through the window at the worker, to the horror of onlookers behind him in line. Did we even need to say that was Florida? Of course not.The Creeps also talk about Matt trying spicy dried mango at a Vegas Raiders game (you're welcome, I bought those because they're awesome), overpowered flavors, the word stan, caramel apple pops, what not to do in a drive thru, and cocoa wheats.

Consisting of 100 objects decorated with 23,000 gemstones, it's held at the Tower of London, protected by guards and high-tech security. But why did one thief put the crown jewels down his trousers? Which king managed to lose his own crown? And why is one diamond so controversial that it is not invited to the coronation of King Charles III? This is a Short History Of... The Crown Jewels. Amidst a puff of smoke machine across a sticky regional gay club dancefloor, Joel and David are meeting you in July 2005, rocking cropped leather gloves for the 'spiritual lead single' of the album. 'So Good' - written by friend of the podcast and brilliant pop songwriter Hannah Robinson and Pascal Gabriel - is a stomping, empowering electro-pop banger. An utterly irresistible way to welcome Rachel's new album and also a key part of Hannah's journey as a songwriter, as we discover. Your zesty hosts chat to Hannah Robinson about 'So Good' and Barry Stone, the amazing songwriter and producer part of The Alias (previously Jewels & Stone) who did the Adam Ant-inspired single 'I Said Never Again (But Here We Are)'. Plus, legendary director Trudy Bellinger, who did the fun "Bad Girls" prison-themed music video. Joel and David are joined by music industry legend Peter Loraine of Fascination Management, who was the Marketing Director at Polydor at time, looking after Rachel alongside Simon Fuller's 19 Entertainment (now XIX Management). As far as content goes - this episode is jam packed with value like the single releases Rachel was giving us in this time. Joel and David take you through her unforgettable live performances in this era including G-A-Y and T4 On The Beach, plus the b-side ('Never Go Back') and interactive PC games!Follow Right Back At Ya!https://www.instagram.com/rightbackpod/https://twitter.com/rightbackpodhttps://www.facebook.com/rightbackpodFollow Joelhttps://www.instagram.com/dr_joelb/https://twitter.com/DR_JoelBFollow Davidhttps://www.instagram.com/lovelimmy/https://twitter.com/lovelimmyEmail us rightbackpod@gmail.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
