James and Ruby Abbott are the founders of the ecological city of Nacia. Before they do we find out what nearly broke them while they were living in New Orleans and how they suddenly became wealthy beyond their wildest dreams. The reality of climate change is explored in depth.
The worn-out group travels through burnt-out forest to get to finally get to Kanata (Canada). One in their party becomes gravely ill, and they enter a small town to find a drunken doctor who does little to help.
The Resistance camp is raided by the Federal government, and Lauren’s family escapes for their lives through the forests of northern Minnesota. Ben makes a sad discovery about extinction, and Lauren must come to terms with her complicity around climate change.
Lauren and her family are taken to the Resistance camp against their wishes, because the Camp’s security leader knows it’s too unsafe for Ben to travel, since he’s mixed race and the militias are waging a campaigner terror.
