This week, Gov. JB Pritzker paused and then officially shut down construction of a tent camp for new arrivals in Brighton Park citing environmental concerns. City Hall must now propose a new location to house thousands of migrants. Both offices blamed the other with the Johnson administration blaming unclear state environmental standards and Pritzker's office arguing city officials failed to engage the state's environmental protection agency. South Side Weekly's Chima "Naira" Ikoro and the Tribune's Jake Sheridan are here to talk about the fallout. Plus, we discuss Mayor Brandon Johnson's plan to reopen two city-run mental health clinics and preview next week's pilgrimage to the Our Lady of Guadalupe shrine in Des Plaines. In this episode, we talk with Matt Busby who is the Senior Associate Pastor at Mission Chattanooga. Matt describes for us the evolution of a relationship between a specific church (Mission Chattanooga) and a coffee shop/restaurant/event space (The Camp House) in three different neighborhoods in downtown Chattanooga. Mission Chattanooga and Camp House began renting in the Southside neighborhood, moved to the MLK neighborhood, and now are located in the Onion Bottom Neighborhood. This conversation highlights some of the ways that a church can bless the neighborhood in which it is located. The Camp House has been a gathering space, a cultural incubator, and a forum for important community conversations. And by drawing people into the neighborhood this entity has helped to enliven the neighborhood. In addition to gathering a diverse community for worship, Mission Chattanooga has sought ways to bless the neighborhood through mercy ministries and civic engagement. Matt shares with us some of the tradeoffs between working with volunteers in a non-profit setting and paid employees in a for profit endeavor. He also talks about his shifting pastoral identity as he navigates dividing his position description between event coordination and pastoral ministry. If you have ever wondered about how a church building can be utilized to bless a neighborhood throughout the week, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Episode ContributorsRev. "It's a quirky romp through this thing that we call Christmas." In Season 6, episode 10 of Reality Escape Pod, we talk to visual installation artist Lonnie Hanzon, who has been creating immersive displays celebrating Christmas for over 30 years. Lonnie is the mastermind behind the wildly creative Christmas trees and windows at Neiman Marcus in Dallas, and "The Evolution of the Ball" installation at Coors Field in Denver. His holiday immersive experience, Camp Christmas, is a whimsical journey into the land of Christmas where every surface is exploding with decor that tells a story. Lonnie is a self-professed maximalist. Trained as a magician, he employs a variety of techniques designed to convey a narrative. Lonnie has amassed a collection of objects he calls his "palette," and as a visual artist, he deploys them strategically to craft a specific mood or era. At his core, Lonnie is an environmental storyteller, and he breaks down his design decisions, explaining how different elements come together to craft a narrative. I particularly enjoyed hearing Lonnie explain his process of creating immersive environments, often starting with what he calls "a color story" and a vision of sparking childlike joy and exuberance. We also discuss things like the social contract when visiting an immersive space and how to encourage polite etiquette among guests. Lonnie's Camp Christmas has converted more than one cynic to the magic of Christmas, and it made even David's heart swell a few inches. The Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) has left an indelible mark on the geologic history of our planet. Spanning millions of years, this colossal volcanic event unfolded approximately 200 million years ago during the Triassic period, forever altering the face of the Earth. CAMP erupted along the rifted margins of the supercontinent Pangaea, stretching from present-day North America through Europe and Africa. This immense outpouring of lava and volcanic activity blanketed vast areas, surpassing any volcanic event witnessed in recent geological times. The geological episode gave rise to an extensive igneous province that covered an astonishing area of more than seven million square kilometers. With powerful volcanic eruptions and the formation of gigantic fissure systems, the CAMP unleashed an unimaginable volume of molten rock, emitting massive volcanic gases and ash into the atmosphere. The impact of CAMP on Earth's biosphere was overwhelming. The sheer magnitude of volcanic activity led to drastic environmental changes, as eruptions spewed ash and gases, potentially causing global climate disruptions. With the release of vast quantities of greenhouse gases, including sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide, the global climate may have been influenced, exacerbating the greenhouse effect. Furthermore, CAMP had significant consequences for life on Earth, leading to one of the most severe mass-extinction events in the planet's history, the end-Triassic extinction. This devastating event affected marine and terrestrial ecosystems, wiping out numerous species, including many reptiles and amphibians. It was a crucial turning point, paving the way for fundamental changes in plant and animal evolution. While the causes of CAMP remain somewhat enigmatic, scientists believe that the vast outpouring of magma was likely due to intense activity associated with the opening of the Atlantic Ocean. This massive volcanic phenomenon profoundly shaped the geologic conditions we observe on our planet today. The Central Atlantic Magmatic Province remains a captivating and fascinating subject of study for geologists and paleontologists alike. Its magnitude and impact have shaped our understanding of Earth's complex past, reminding us of the power and intricacies of the planet we call home.
Hey there, Community! Thanks for joining us! At the time of this recording, we are in the throes of the Holiday Season, which we can also call The Season Focused on Food. In the midst of this food frenzy, we begin this episode by asking, “which Camp are you signing up for and what is your why?” #1: The “There Are No Limits” Camp #2: The “Everything in Moderation” Camp #3: The “I'm Sticking to the Food is Medicine” Camp We also discuss how our lifestyle choices are directly linked to not only chronic disease, but to Alzheimer's and cognitive decline. We review the key pillars of health: movement/exercise, what we eat/diet, sleep quality, stress management, environmental toxins, and community (relationships). The information we share today regarding Alzheimer's and cognitive decline is based on the work of Dr. Majid Fotuhi, a renowned neurologist, professor, and expert in brain fitness. Dr. Fotuhi has developed a twelve week program which has proved to improve or reverse cognitive decline in over 80% of his patients. To learn more, check out his website @ drfotuhi.com. We also recommend listening to an interview with Dr. Fotuhi on Dr. Hyman's podcast, The Doctor's Farmacy, episode # 817. Additionally, we discuss: 1. The staggering increase of dementia and Alzheimer's in the US over the last few decades. 6 million people to date. 2. A projected 14 million cases will be diagnosed by 2050. 3. The fact that Alzheimer's is a symptom of multiple ongoing and unhealthy conditions in the body (metabolic syndrome). It is not the cause. 4. What does belly fat (visceral fat) tell us about our brain health? 5. There are steps we must take now to turn this around, especially for our children. The evidence is in, folks. Poor lifestyle choices, the desire for quick and easy, and a conventional health care paradigm that focuses on treating not preventing, are a few of the factors leading us straight down the path to Alzheimer's and cognitive decline. The good news is, we can turn this around. The proof is undeniable. It is now time to ask ourselves how much longer are we willing to play victim? How much longer are we going to deny the correlation between lifestyle choices and quality of health? How will we explain to our children that we knew, but we chose to ignore. We encourage each person listening to this to take a stand. Take back your health. Make the hard, uncomfortable choices now that will offer you better health and quality of life. For you and for the children. Please help us spread the word by sharing this podcast. Any assessment of Contemporary Christian Music in the 1980s and 90s would have to include the name Steve Camp. His first national release, “Sayin' It With Love,” topped the then fledgling Christian charts in 1978, 45 years ago. He put out a steady stream of top selling albums and singles for the next 20 years. But in 1998 he did something that amplified his influence far beyond the Christian music scene. While on tour in Europe, he visited the church where Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses, an event that many say ushered in the Reformation. Camp sent out his own 107 theses on Reformation Day (October 31), 1998, calling for a reformation in contemporary Christian music: calling Christian musicians to make direct, uncompromising music that confronts the world with the message of the scriptures. Camp's 107 Theses was widely covered at the time in Christian media, and some of the ideas he introduced are being hotly debated even today. So when I heard that Steve Camp had a new album out, his first in more than 15 years, I could not resist the opportunity to have a chat with him. We talk about his new album, “Neighbors in an Age of Rage,” and his work as a pastor of a church in Florida. By the way, you can find Steve Camp's 107 Theses here. If you want to feel like you're gathered around the table or fireside with friends, this is an episode you don't want to miss.

Josh got into duck hunting through his interest in the Texas Waterfowl Brigade. 00:03:44 - 00:04:06 Do you do any other kinds of hunting? "I'm actually more of a pheasant hunter than a duck hunter" 00:04:27 - 00:04:55 How did you meet Jennifer? "I actually was doing an event down in a little place in North Dakota called Washburn and we went to a DU banquet and I was selling a puppy because we still had a couple of them. I saw an advertisement saying, "join us trip down to Texas". And I thought that was really fun. So I emailed her and that's how it started." 00:05:17 - 00:05:42 What exactly is the North Dakota Waterfowl Brigade? The North Dakota Waterfowl Brigade is a program developed based on the Texas Waterfowl Brigade model. It focuses on educating kids about waterfowl, habitat management, leadership, and teamwork through a five-day camp. 00:09:23 - 00:10:21 Why did you choose the Texas Waterfowl Brigade model? Josh was drawn to the Texas Brigade model because of its seamless setup, emphasis on hands-on learning, incorporation of leadership activities, and the successful engagement of kids in outdoor activities. 00:12:45 - 00:13:26 Which program are you modeling from the Texas Waterfowl Brigade? They are specifically modeling the Waterfowl Brigade from the Texas Brigades' camp program. How are you using that program to develop your program? We're adapting the Texas Waterfowl Brigade model but with a different curriculum focusing on the breeding grounds in North Dakota instead of habitat management for wintering ducks in Texas. 00:14:09 - 00:14:15 When will you launch the program? The North Dakota Waterfowl Brigade program is set to run for five days, scheduled from June 3rd to June 7th, 2024, during the summer. Is everyone excited about it? Yes, there is a level of excitement surrounding the program, but some individuals are also a bit hesitant or cautious about the new endeavor. 00:21:27 - 00:22:02 Are there any hunting trips in your future? Josh mentions potential hunting trips to Red Lodge, Montana, for Rough Grouse and to Ohio for deer hunting with his father's friends. 00:22:30 - 00:23:11 Do you have any suggestions and/or advice for folks looking to get into duck hunting? Josh recommends finding someone experienced to teach you, emphasizing the importance of learning from others, even if the hunt isn't successful. He also suggests that hunting with a group can make the experience more enjoyable. Jensifer's advice is: that in North Dakota, we have organizations that host different Types of hunts. Like, I know our pheasants forever. Like, they're they do a youth hunt, and then our the North Dakota game and fish, Excuse me. The North Dakota Game and Fish, we have there's a they have an r three coordinator who also coordinates some Hunting around waterfowl and things like that, so they're almost like mentored hunts. What is your favorite outdoor gear purchase under $100? 00:25:35 - 00:25:57 Josh mentions a good dog brush with dual sides for detangling dog hair, particularly helpful after hunting trips when dogs often get tangled in cockleburs. 00:26:27 - 00:26:32 Jennifer says you've got to have a good headlamp. How about some of your favorite books? 00:26:41 - 00:27:15 Josh talks about "The Lonesome Cowboy with Friends," a book given to him by an author he met at a camp. 00:27:56 - 00:28:02 Jennifer discusses "Devolution" by Max Brooks, a Bigfoot-themed book that combines fiction with survival advice. Is there anything else you'd like to say or ask of our listeners? Jennifer promotes fundraising efforts for the North Dakota Waterfowl Brigade through Ducks Unlimited, encouraging support for their camp on February 8th, 2024, during Giving Hearts Day.
