We are two friends raised on (and arguably, by) Bollywood. After a decade of talking about doing this--first in classrooms and tea shops, and then, separated by continents, over video calls--we're finally starting to put together our constant conversations about Bollywood into the form of a weekly podcast, "Jolly Good Bollywood--Members Only." N.B.: We owe the first part of our name to Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (Dir. Karan Johar, 2016) and the second part from Fight Club--Members Only (Dir. Vikram Chopra, 2006), which should tell you more about us than anything else.
Jolly Good Bollywood: Members Only
In today's episode (our first featuring a guest), we take on Bollywood music, and map a history of music director duos from Husnalal Bhagatram to Meet Bros.
We are back with our new episode on 'lost and found' films. We take a tour through the history of films about families separated and reunited, discuss sub-genres like that of the star crossed lovers films, twin-separated-at-birth films, rebirth films, imposter films etc. What's your favorite film about people who are lost and found?
In this week's episode, we discuss representations of uprisings in Bollywood film through the decades as well as the importance of such films.
We are back this week in a longish episode on a subject that is not quite "jolly good" but which we have really wanted to speak about and shed light upon: the portrayal of stalking and harassment in Bollywood films through the ages, and the dangerous narrative they create in reel and real lives. As always, we have tried to map a history of the depiction of stalking on-screen, and have tried to discuss the repercussions these have in terms of normalizing such behavior. We end with a simple demand: it's 2020, let us first acknowledge the problematic behavior of characters as such, and then let's do better. If you like our content, please like, share, and follow us. In Part 2 of our episode on 'Travel in Bollywood' we talk about travel in some of our favorite films from the '00s and '10s and about a special twist on the idea of 'travel'. We start off where Part 1 left off. If you haven't heard Part 1, where we talk about Travel in Bollywood cinema from the 60s to the 90s, you can check it out here: https://soundcloud.com/jolly-good-bollywood/episode-2-part-1 If you have any suggestions or ideas about what future episodes could be about, please drop us a line at jollygoodbollywoodpodcast@gmail.com We do not own the music played before and after the film. Thank you so much for your kind response to Episode 1. This week we are back to talking about 'Travel in Bollywood' (and Rishi Kapoor's ugly sweaters). Part 2 of this episode, where we talk about travel in some of our favorite films from the '00s and '10s and about a special twist on travel, will go live on Tuesday, April 21. We know the audio glitches persist, but we're realizing it's a side effect of recording simultaneously from Delhi and New York. We will work on it. If you have any suggestions or ideas about what future episodes could be about, please drop us a line at jollygoodbollywoodpodcast@gmail.com A list of all the media mentioned is available in the comments. This is our first time, so we're still learning. And because we recorded it over a Zoom call, there's a lot of talking over one another. We will work on that. If you have any suggestions about how we can do to improve a podcast recorded simultaneously from Delhi and New York, please drop us a line at jollygoodbollywoodpodcast@gmail.com A list of all the media mentioned is available in the comments. This is by no means an exhaustive list, and we have missed many a film we would have liked to talk about. The most important one of these being China Gate (Dir. Rajkumar Santoshi, 1998). Who knows, maybe we could do a whole episode about it one day. We do not own the music played before and after the film. They belong to their respective copyright owner.
