If you were ever an enthusiastic reader of “Calvin and Hobbes,” “Peanuts,” “Blondie,” “Doonesbury,” or the “Boondocks,” you have a treat coming your way: “Mafalda,” a six-year-old comic book character created by the artist Quino in Argentina, is now available in English in a dazzling translation by Frank Wynne. Mafalda is a precocious kid—Frank describes her as “six going on sixty”—who observes the world around her with fresh eyes, and then asks the kind of queer questions that the grown-ups in her life can't or won't answer. Mafalda's concerns focus on humanity and world peace, and her innocence shines a bright light on the conflict between what adults claim to value, and how they actually live. Think of her as a socialist “Nancy.” We're joined from London by Frank Wynne, a former Chair of the Judging Panel of the International Booker Prize and the award-winning author, translator, and editor of two major anthologies, Found in Translation: 100 of the finest stories every translated, and QUEER: LGBTQ Writing from Ancient Times to Yesterday.

Gary was given some lost items and he tries to find the people who lost them
Barry conducts the third of his interviews with Vice Presidents at Criswell College. The life and career of Kevin Stilley, our VP of Finance, also took a circuitous route (there seems to be a pattern emerging here). His journey includes a love of reading and learning, “accidental” changes in career and ministry, and some very […]
Episode #993 Ever feel like you've checked all the boxes—career, family, success—but something still doesn't feel right? You're not alone. And more importantly, you're not broken. In this episode, Tim Matthews is joined by Gregory “Dynamite” and Derek “The Redwood” for a down-to-earth conversation about what it really means to feel lost as a man. They get honest about the times in their lives when they realized they were completely off track—and what it took to admit it, face it, and find their way forward. This isn't about having a breakdown. It's about having a breakthrough. They share what it feels like to build a life that looks great on the outside, but doesn't feel right on the inside. The pressure to have the answers. The temptation to sedate with work, alcohol, or just staying busy. The fear of admitting you're not sure who you are anymore. But they also dive into the shift that happens when you stop fighting that feeling—and start listening to it. In this episode, you'll hear how spending time in nature, reconnecting with purpose, and leaning on brotherhood helped each of them move from feeling trapped to truly alive again. If you've ever wondered, “How did I get here?”—this conversation is for you. Sometimes being lost isn't a problem. It's a wake-up call. And it might be exactly what you need to finally find yourself. Feeling lost in your marriage too? Just like in life, the first step to fixing a relationship is admitting you're not where you want to be. This free training shows you exactly how to get clarity, connection, and that spark back.

The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009
Dr. Al Grauer hosts. Dr. Albert D. Grauer ( @Nmcanopus ) is an observational asteroid hunting astronomer. Dr. Grauer retired from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2006. travelersinthenight.org From September 2024. Today's 2 topics: - When asteroid hunters follow an object in the night sky for a few hours or a couple of days they are only able to observe a snippet or tracklet of the object's hundreds to thousands of days long path around the Sun. If we only have a short sample of an orbit we loose precision to locate the object as the length of time since the last observation increases. It is thus possible to lose the knowledge of where to find a particular asteroid. - It's a good thing this one will miss Earth! Riding the surface of the asteroid that my Catalina Sky Survey teammate Richard Kowalski recently discovered would be an incredible experience. Sermon by Rabbi Ari Lorge, "Lost and Found"June 13, 2025
“As my own mother is aging, she's telling me … before I take this to my grave, here is something you should know. So the secrets are coming out. And as more and more secrets are revealed, I'm learning more about myself.” - Ibi Zoboi Ibi Zoboi writes to remember—her own story, her family's legacy, and the long history of migration, myth, and memory that shaped them both. For Ibi, storytelling is a form of resistance and reclamation. It's how she makes sense of the secrets that shaped her life and gives voice to those left out of the narrative. A National Book Award finalist and the bestselling author of American Street, Pride, Star Child, and (S)Kin, Ibi's work blurs the line between folklore and futurism. In this episode, Stories Left Untold: Ibi Zoboi on Secrets Lost and Found, she opens up about growing up Haitian in 1980s Brooklyn, discovering a half-sister decades later, and finding her way to writing through soap operas, Stephen King, and the voices of women who came before her. She also shares how a Vodou ceremony in Brooklyn changed her relationship to her culture, why she always sought out elders and activists, and how she's still learning to push back against the pressure to fit a mold—on the page and off.Ibi's reading challenge, Haitian Creations, celebrates stories of migration and identity from first-generation and immigrant voices—stories that, like hers, speak to the truths we inherit and the ones we uncover for ourselves.Download Ibi's reading challenge at thereadingculturepod.com/ibi-zoboiAnd this week's Beanstack Featured Librarian is once again William Shaller, the librarian at Hoffman Middle School in Houston, Texas. Father's Day is less than a week away, so I thought this would be a wonderful time to share a story about my father. I have lots of cherished memories to choose from, but this is one of my all-time favorites. I'm sure that, in the midst of the childhood crisis I was experiencing at the time, my dad never dreamed what a lasting and long-reaching effect of his response would have in my life, but it did. Show Notes VERSES CITED: 1 John 3:1 - “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” Romans 8:38 - “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” John 1:12 - “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name.” RELATED LINKS: 5 Lessons I Learned by Losing a Diamond Fathers Matter (Every Day of the Year) A Letter to My Father Free Printable Prayer for Fathers A Hero in the Making: Like Father, Like Son STAY CONNECTED: Subscribe: Flanders Family Freebies -weekly themed link lists of free resources Instagram: @flanders_family - follow for more great content Family Blog: Flanders Family Home Life - parenting tips, homeschool help, lprintables Marriage Blog: Loving Life at Home- encouragement for wives, mothers, believers
