Jane Anderson has spent her entire career staring directly into the patterns of control, obsession, and escalation that define stalking and intimate partner violence. She began as an Assistant State Attorney in Miami-Dade's Domestic Violence Unit, where she saw—again and again—how stalking isn't just a red flag, but a warning for violence to come. In the early 1990s, a beloved first-grade teacher in Pennsylvania began receiving harassing, threatening letters from an anonymous sender. Her school principal, fellow teachers, and the parents of some of her students soon began receiving them too. As the ordeal wore on, the stalker slowly escalated from taunts to vile accusations and death threats—and then, finally, violence. From early on in the case, the police thought they knew the tormentor's identity, but it took 18 months to finally gather the evidence needed for an arrest. The trial to follow would be one of the most bizarre the state had ever seen. Stalking, mental abuse, and parental alienation are forms of violence. They are real, destructive, and legally recognized harms that no woman or man—especially a non-citizen whose immigration status depends on a U.S. citizen or permanent resident spouse—should ever feel obligated to tolerate. Domestic violence does not have to involve bruises, broken bones, or police reports to be real. For immigrant women, abuse is often quieter, more insidious, and deeply tied to immigration status. It can occur behind closed doors, through constant surveillance, psychological domination, and the systematic destruction of a woman's relationship with her children. U.S. immigration law recognizes these realities and provides protections for survivors—but only if women understand that what they are experiencing counts as abuse and that documentation matters.

The Night Stalker, a TV-movie starring Darren McGavin, Simon Oakland and Barry Atwater, was about an intrepid reporter named Carl Kolchak covering a series of bizarre murders in Las Vegas – murders he becomes increasingly convinced are being committed by an actual, real-life vampire.  It premiered on January 11, 1972 to blockbuster ratings and for decades was the highest rated TV-movie of all time.  It led to a sequel, The Night Strangler, and eventually to a 20-episode TV series that premiered on September 13, 1974. It's the TV show that most people my age remember – a weekly trip into horror that at the time had no equal. Chris Carter often cites his love for The Night Stalker as the inspiration for creating his hit series The X-Files. And of course, listeners of this podcast know about my affection for the show and how formative it was for me as a young kid.
