In April 1958, five young British nurses drove out of Cleveland, Ohio, where they had been working for a year, to see the rest of the USA. In this recording, Gwenda Gofton and her best friend Pat Small remember those days – the jobs they did and the people they met – some of which are recounted in the 2011 book Bedpans and Bobby Socks (Little, Brown). Little did they realise that buying their first car as student nurses in Newcastle would change their lives.
