This week on The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief chats with Phil Brandon, Founder and Head Distiller, of Rock Town Distillery . This craft distillery located in the heart of downtown Little Rock, Arkansas produces some great whiskey that has never been done before. Phil takes the Big Man on a journey through his distilling story while also introducing him to unique mash bills that make this distillery stand out. Brandon's whiskey trip has taken him from the big hardwoods of Arkansas so that he understands where his barrels will come from in the future, to the farms of Arkansas, so he knows the hard work of the farmers who grow his grains. In the first half Big Chief and Brandon start with the Arkansas Bourbon which has a mash bill of 82% corn, 9% wheat, 9% malted barley - right up the big man's palate. The second expression they taste is an Arkansas Rice Bbourbon. Arkansas is the number one state for rice production. The rice gives it an extra sweetness. The last expression of the first half is an Arkansas Single Malt. In the second half Phil introduces Mike to their Rock Town Column Still Collection. This collaboration with Bardstown Bourbon Company will help the company expand their reach across America. They sip on the small batch and then a toasted French Oak expression – a toasted, wheated bourbon to be exact! This ride on The Whiskey Trip highlights David Pickerel's legacy of craft distilleries he helped create across the American landscape. Cheers!

Hear about travel to Finland as the Amateur Traveler talks to travel writer Jayne Dear about a one-week itinerary to visit the best of Finland by train.   https://amateurtraveler.com/touring-finland-by-train/   Why should you visit Finland?   Jayne says, "Many reasons. One of the most notable is that it's the happiest country in the world. For the last six years, it's been declared the happiest country in the world on the World Happiness Report. It's a beautiful country. You probably will have seen more trees than you will have seen in your life."   Jayne starts us in the capital of Helsinki. She recommends visiting:   Helsinki Central Station: A stunning Art Nouveau train station with a 48-meter-high clock tower. National Museum of Finland: This museum offers insights into Finland's history, including Viking relics, artifacts, and a Russian czar's throne. Market Square: Located by the harbor in Helsinki, it's a vibrant place to witness the local food scene, buy fresh produce, and try unique dishes like moose burgers and reindeer soup. Helsinki Cathedrals: There are two cathedrals to explore in Helsinki—the plain yet dramatic Lutheran Cathedral and the opulent Uspenski Orthodox Cathedral, offering a contrasting religious experience. Suomenlinna Fortress: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this historic fortress on an island near Helsinki was built to deny the Russians access to the Baltic Sea. It's a fascinating place to explore, with military museums, a submarine, and a lighthouse church.   While you are in Helsinki Jayne recommends a side trip to Porvoo which is located an hour from Helsinki by bus, Porvoo is known for its traditional wooden buildings. It has an open-air museum, showcasing historic buildings, churches, schools, and farms, providing a glimpse into Finland's rural past.   Take the train then to Tampere which Jayne calls the "Manchester of Finland" due to its industrial history. Visitors can explore old warehouses, textile factories turned into museums and unique architecture like the Art Nouveau Fire Station. The city is situated between two lakes, offering picturesque views. For the best views, hike the nearby esker, a gravel hill left by the last Ice Age.   While in Tampere, Jayne and her husband also did a homestay where they were able to learn more about life in Finland.   Located in Parola, south of Tampere, is the Parola Tank Museum which showcases a variety of tanks and military vehicles, offering insights into military history.   Our next stop is Turku which was Finland's old capital. Turku boasts a medieval cathedral and a historic castle. The city's riverside features historic boats, making it an attractive destination for exploring maritime history.   If you have extra time, head north to Rovaniemi which is located on the Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi is famous for being the "home" of Santa Claus. Visitors can partake in activities like dog sledding and witness the Northern Lights during the winter months.   Whether you want to explore the coffee culture, the Finnish love of board games, the extensive forests, or the Wife Carrying World Championships, Finland is worth a visit.

Without credible explanations for the things that bewilder and exasperate us, people become susceptible to extremist conspiracy theories, hate and lies. So how does truth survive? In her brand new book, "Doppelgänger: A Trip into the Mirror World”, award-winning journalist Naomi Klein, (author of No Logo, The Shock Doctrine, et al), describes being confused with Naomi Wolf, author of The Beauty Myth, as Wolf morphed into a conspiracy-minded anti-vaxxer during the Covid pandemic. In an era of all important "personal brands", Klein became absorbed in the deep fake, double worlds surrounding and sometimes coming to represent her online. Right-wing conspiracies feed off Left-wing silences, she concludes. In this far-ranging interview from her home in British Columbia, Canada, Klein describes listening to hours and hours of conspiracist Steve Bannon's podcasts, and researching doppelgängers in history and literature, in order to uncover why we have shadow selves, and how disinformation and conspiracy theories gain power. Join Laura Flanders for this charming conversation as Naomi Klein challenges us to overcome divide-and-conquer individualism if we are ever to tackle our real-life, systemic crises. And Laura shares a few thoughts on learning from our elders about the pre-digital age.“[I think that] the pressure we're putting on the self . . . is part of why we're seeing so many people crack. I don't think the self can support the amount that we are putting on it: It's our income. It's our retirement. It's our safety. It's our lifeboat . . . And it's an illusion because we cannot protect ourselves from the forces that we're up against . . . Our only hope of protection is through collective work and collective movement building.” - Naomi Klein“Very often we think that the solution is deplatforming . . . What I've seen is that it's actually kind of supercharged the movement. People wear it as a badge of honor . . . I am less interested in how we control speech and much more interested in how we drain conspiracy culture of its energy, of its power.” - Naomi KleinGuest:  Naomi Klein Naomi Klein is the award-winning author of international bestsellers including This Changes Everything, The Shock Doctrine, No Logo, No Is Not Enough, and On Fire, which have been published in more than thirty-five languages. She is an associate professor in the department of geography at the University of British Columbia, the founding co-director of UBC's Centre for Climate Justice, and an honorary professor of Media and Climate at Rutgers University. On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Jack Smith and Connor Morrissette (aka Triple-Double) are back in studio and ready to preview one of the more highly anticipated games of the young 2023 college football season, a road trip to Boulder where Lincoln Riley, Caleb Williams and the 4-0 No. 8 ranked USC Trojans will face Deion Sanders, Shedeur Sanders and the 3-1 Colorado Buffaloes. USC is coming off a sloppy 14-point win over Arizona State in Tempe and Colorado is trying to bounce back from an unsuccessful trip to Eugene where the Ducks had their way with the Buffs. The guys will give their thoughts on this game, including the extremely early 9 a.m. PST kickoff time, Big Noon Kickoff pregame show being there and the media circus that surrounds the most talked about figure in college football, Coach Prime. On paper USC's strengths line up pretty well with Colorado's weaknesses, specifically the Trojans can run the ball well where the Buffaloes have a hard to stopping the run plus SC's pass rush has been elite this season and CU has given up the most sacks among Power Five programs. The guys give their thoughts on USC's struggles in the desert and talk about what changes they would like to see heading into another tough road environment in Boulder next weekend. This is a podcast version of our video show Tunnel Vision that you can find on our Facebook or YouTube pages. Make sure you check out USCFootball.com for complete coverage of this USC Trojan football team.  To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Cheers," Ann Peck McBride emailed: "I first heard the podcast about 13 years ago! And it's taken me all this time to become a Patreon member. Sorry, Marc! I'm embarrassed to say I listen to your podcast while I'm doing housework. (It's a treat I give myself so that I'll actually do the housework) I am always surprised at the wonderful new Celtic artists you play. I first listened to you because I needed to hear all the Celtic music I could. I listen now, partly for that reason, and partly because for the last few years, I have co - hosted a Celtic Music Hour program in Salem Oregon, on KMUZ. As my friend (and I think yours) Steve Behrens said, "We've fallen down the rabbit hole of Celtic music!" And here in the Pacific Northwest, we have a LOT of Celtic musicians... Thanks" Debra Roche emailed a photo: "Hello, Mark, I recently played your St Patrick's Day 2023 podcast from SiriusXM and loved it! Many years ago (1985 - 1991)I had opened The Celtic Cottage & Roche's of Ireland in Davenport, & Bettendorf, IA which brought me to do an Irish show at St Ambrose University for their college radio show. How much fun that time in my life was! Whenever you give back to your community it is just the best when your family roots are connected! As my father's parents where from County Limerick Ireland. Glin & New Castle West. Hope you're well and thank you for your music podcast!” Melissa Helman emailed a photo of her dirty dishes: "So exciting, I know. Keep up the great work with the podcast." Christopher Patrick of Salem, MA emailed a couple photos: "Hello Mark! I can't tell you how happy I am to have discovered the ‘Irish & Celtic Music Podcast!' But I'm gonna try, all the same! You see, in my childhood, my 5 siblings and I would get loaded up into our family station wagon every Saturday morning by our mother. She would then proceed to drive us all into Boston for our weekly Irish Step Dancing lessons. Our rides both in and back were spent listening to Boston's AM's radio show, ‘The Irish Hour,' and later, ‘The Irish Hit Parade,' (still on the air to this day!) So, those jigs and reels were ingrained in us in our step dancing, and the other traditional music was from our rides there and home. My mother soon landed us an agent, and we, the six kids, danced all around the Greater Boston area. So, it is no real big surprise that these days, I play in an Irish Music Band with my family. Comprised of myself, my brother, two sisters, and brother - in - law, we perform under the name of ‘FitzBlarney,' based in Salem, Massachusetts. I've attached a coupla' photos for you, too  -  one of the six of us in our 1970s step - dancing attire, and one from this past St. Patrick's Day, where FitzBlarney played out at The Witches Brew pub in Salem. The music you play means a lot to me, so, I recently became a patron. Just out of appreciation! Thanks again, and ‘Sláinte!' P.S. I would love to one day get on your podcast! That'd be so cool!"
