Episode 04 - Jerry O'Neill (Voodoo Glow Skulls, Emily and the Blackouts, Dead Sparrows)

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 27, 2019 64:32

On this episode of Suburban Sprawlcast, we celebrate 50 years of Jerry O'Neill. Jerry is most notoriously known for drumming for the Voodoo Glow Skulls for almost 20 years, but is now holding down the rhythm section of Emily and the Blackouts. When I was in Jr High and High School, "Firme" by Voodoo Glow Skulls was on repeat while Em and I played countless hours of N64. I found that I had to keep pinching myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming because the 15 year old in me was losing his mind. We talk about how the Glow Skulls got started, the fun and the struggles of being in a successful band, playing with iconic bands like Sublime and Green Day, and his time spent driving around in his rock and roll cab collecting memorable stories for a possible book in the future. Happy Birthday Jerry, I can't thank you enough for doing this interview. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/suburbansprawlcast/message

On this episode of Suburban Sprawlcast, I hit the streets of Pomona to catch up with Jason and Paco from The Failures. We talk about life in the working class, politics, tattoos and art, and in Jason's words, "making music for the homies." Though the days of playing every weekend have come to a halt, The Failures refuse to hang up the towel and call it quits. Their album "Working Class Blues" has become a soundtrack for the underground Pomona scene because where they're from, the night belongs to the punks. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/suburbansprawlcast/message
