Doom (1993) and Doom II (1994). Developed by id Software, these games introduced the fast-paced, visceral FPS gameplay that would shape the industry for decades. With tight level design, explosive weapons, and iconic monsters, Doom wasn't just a game—it was a movement. And while we're at it, we'll mention Doom 64, the 1997 N64 follow-up that carved out its own identity in the shadows of its PC predecessors. Hosted on Acast. This week on My Third Place Podcast, Evo and Gregg throw it all the way back like a rewound VHS and level up the nostalgia! From Evo's latest nerd haul—featuring 50 Pokémon cards, a Lorcana deck, and two Superman graphic novels—to memories of grinding through the 90s console era and rushing home for after school cartoons, we're hitting you with pure retro power. We also talk:
The year was 1985, Freddy Mercury was bringing down the house at Wembley, Rocky Balboa won the Cold War by defeating Ivan Drago, and the Nintendo Entertainment System was release in the United States. It took the country by storm on the overall clad back of an Italian plumber named Mario. Nintendo ruled the home video game market until 1989 when a new player joined the game. The Sega Genesis' step onto the scene wasn't a home run right away. Sega decided to bring in a legend of the toy industry, a man named Tom Kalinske. This guy had his hands all over your childhood (not in the bad way) . Flintstone Vitamins? He created them. Barbie? He's the reason she's around today. Matchbox Cars? Who amongst us hasn't smashed one with a hammer when they no longer rolled properly. Tom and his team decided the only way to fight Nintendo's death grip on the market was to appeal to an older more mature and rebellious audience, teenagers. Sega became MTV to Nintendo's Disney Channel. Their battle took place in the stores, at the conventions, and on your TV. It had everything, corporate sabotage, defection to the competition, Joey Lawrence, Japanese rent-by-the-hour hotels, and a Hedgehog with attitude who's still doing his thing today. Get ready for the nostalgia fueled ride that is The Console Wars: Round 1.Support the show
Retroids, start your engines! This episode is all about driving and racing games! We're talking arcades, Atari, Super Nintendo, the N64, and into the era of Playstation and X-Box! On today's show, Andy hangs out with Steve from Opus Science Collective — a one-man musical powerhouse, teacher, and cool guy. They chat about the origins of his misleadingly plural band name, dive into synths, chiptune, city pop, and even get interrupted by his senile cat, Yoda. Steve and Andy nerd out over classic cartoons like The Real Ghostbusters and Transformers, the weirdness of N64 emulation, and fantasies about dream geek spaces — including Lego rooms and CRT-filtered arcades. Welcome to Episode 83 of Tablesetters! We've got a phenomenal guest joining us today — Tim Dillard, a beloved figure in the baseball world whose personality is as electric as his insight. A former MLB pitcher with an 18-year professional career, Tim spent the bulk of his playing days in the Milwaukee Brewers organization, earning respect not just for his durability on the mound but for his unmatched clubhouse presence and deep love of the game. Since hanging up his cleats, Tim has seamlessly transitioned into the broadcast booth, where his humor, storytelling, and unique player perspective have made him a fan favorite all over again. Today, we're pulling back the curtain on his journey — from reinventing his delivery mid-career to finding his voice on the mic — and getting his candid thoughts on the 2025 Brewers. We discuss what feels like a season in transition for Milwaukee, a team still searching for consistency but loaded with potential. Tim shares his perspective on what needs to click, which young arms could provide a jolt, and why he believes this group can still make a run. We also reflect on the passing of Bob Uecker and what he meant to the Brewers family, both on and off the field. Plus, we dive into Jackson Chourio's growth, the rise of Jacob Misiorowski, and what it's really like balancing levity and analysis in today's media landscape. And yes — we wrap it up with some fun bracket talk, including the legendary N64 games showdown Tim stirred up back in spring. It's a wide-ranging, heartfelt, and hilarious conversation that blends baseball, broadcasting, and perspective.

I think it (along with the rest of the GameCube wrestling games) get overshadowed by the SmackDown series, but if you grew up playing the N64 holy grail titles, you have to play this one. Day of Reckoning's controls feel like the next-step from games like WCW/nWo Revenge and WWF No Mercy. Simple enough for anyone to pick up, but there's enough depth there for us die-hards to really sink our teeth into. Add in a decent roster and a solid career mode, and you have all the ingredients for at LEAST a four-star match. My guest this week is the official referee of RTG, Mike The Ref. We both love wrestling, love wrestling games, and really like Day of Reckoning. Some minor gripes and I explain why I prefer SmackDown, but all in all DoR is a must-play for any Ruthless Aggression era junkies. And before we ring the bell, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks bout the logic behind our scoring system. How do I feel about Wreck-It Ralph? And I give some one-handed game suggestions to a hot dog with a bad wing. Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Update on our week: Another week together. We start off the conversation with Andy and his purchase of R36S. Andy gives us his thoughts on this retro handheld game console. This console plays NES, SNES, N64, PS1 along with PSP and plenty more. Andy got a deal, but was it worth it? Noel mentioned that a PC software Launchbox is an excellent way to play on your PC. Noel has been gaming and beats an indie game, Never Alone. This game is based in the Alaskan snowy plains. Noel mentioned his new PC in the last recording, but goes into more details in this episode. His new graphics card is a RTX 5080. It was challenging getting this graphics card as it is the newest release and everyone is looking for it. Noel's hope is that this beefy PC will last a few years since it is future proof. Daniel watches an older move in Tropic Thunder. After rewatching this movie, the crew feels that this movie might not have been released now a days. Daniel also watches HBO Max The Fall of Diddy. This documentary brings up some details on the Puff Daddy scandals. The last thing Daniel watched was the Netflix documentary, American Murder Gabby Petito. Netflix goes over the disappearance of Gabby Petito in 2021 and the weird reaction from the boyfriend Brian Laundrie and his parents. This is not the anger of a vampire killer. This is the podcast of all humanity! Welcome back to Fanbruary! Today, we're going to be talking about Castlevania 64, an oft maligned entry in the Castlevania series and the first to be in 3D. In classic Castlevania fashion, your goal is to infiltrate a castle and kill Dracula to restore peace to the world, so it doesn't have a ton of innovation in that respect, but porting that formula to 3D means reworking the design of the platforming and combat, which it does surprisingly well…at times. Being on the N64, this game definitely has some amount of jank, but outside of some specifically problematic areas and letting the sometimes uncooperative camera slide, it feels better than you might imagine. Combat is very punchy, at least playing as Reinhardt, with his whip feeling satisfying to use and enemy effects like parts of skeletons falling off or heavy flinch animations giving meaningful feedback. The platforming is more hit and miss, but it's serviceable enough that much of the early and midgame challenges feel fair and fun to get through. It hits some weird difficulty levels at points where the systems just aren't prepared to keep up with the design, and it seems like a symptom of early 3D growing pains mixed with a team unsure how to work within the new limitations. Throw in the fact that the game hits that Castlevania cheesiness in its atmosphere and writing and the resulting game is much better than you may have been led to believe, which is to say, worth checking out, even if it isn't the most exemplary entry in the series. We're going to be talking about the importance of a game's first level, the differences between playing this at the time and in the present, and we wonder if this game's protagonist might also be a form of transportation. Thank you for joining us again this week! We've still got more Fanbruary coming up even though it's technically March now, so stay tuned. This was significantly more competent than we expected given its reputation, and overall had a pretty good time with it. Are you a big fan of the series and have opinions on this entry? Did you play this (or it's weird expanded version) on the N64 or is this the first you've really considered it? Let us know in the comments or over on our Discord! Next time, we're going to be talking about Shenmue, so we hope you'll join us for that.
