Money worries are far more common than we like to admit: from keeping you awake at night to quietly shaping your choices and decisions, financial anxiety affects us all - especially after a season of festive indulgence. In this episode, comedian Fern Brady (recorded live in Edinburgh) speaks about not having enough money to stay at university - and the unconventional ways she earned a living to keep going. Media mogul Simon Cowell reflects on going bankrupt in his late twenties and how he *still* worries about money even now because of the fear that he'll have to start again from scratch. Together, these conversations explore financial failure, resilience and the belief that setbacks don't have to define what comes next. We hope they offer reassurance to anyone feeling overwhelmed by money issues right now. Venezuela's recent economic history (Update)

We've been checking in on the economic conditions in Venezuela for about a decade now. In response to the U.S. strike and the capture of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro this weekend, we're re-surfacing this episode with an update. The original version ran in 2016, with an update in 2024.Back in 2016, things were pretty bad in Venezuela. Grocery stores didn't have enough food. Hospitals didn't have basic supplies, like gauze. Child mortality was spiking. Businesses were shuttering. It was one of the epic economic collapses of our time. And it was totally avoidable.Venezuela used to be a relatively rich country. It has just about all the economic advantages a country could ask for: Beautiful beaches and mountains ready for tourism, fertile land good for farming, an educated population, and oil, lots and lots of oil.But during the boom years, the Venezuelan government made some choices that add up to an economic time bomb.Today on the show, we run through the decisions that foreshadowed the collapse, and we hear from people in Venezuela in 2016 at a particularly low point for the economy, then again and in 2024 after a bounce back and a stabilization, in part due to the unlikely impact of the U.S. dollar. Pre-order the Planet Money book and get a free gift. / Subscribe to Planet Money+Listen free: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, the NPR app or anywhere you get podcasts.Facebook / Instagram / TikTok / Our weekly Newsletter. This original episode was hosted by Robert Smith and Noel King. This week, we're heading to Florida to unravel one of the weirdest engineering mysteries in modern times: Coral Castle. Built entirely by one man working alone in the dead of night, this limestone labyrinth features finger-push doors weighing tons, a sun dial and astrological alignments, magnetic anomalies, levitation rumors and a heartbreak-fueled origin story.  Was Edward Leedskalnin a misunderstood genius, a keeper of secret knowledge, or something stranger? We dive into accounts of floating stones, spinning compasses, humming vibrations, and theories ranging from magnetism and sound frequencies to anti-gravity and full-on wizard behavior. Llevar a cabo: Realizar algo, hacerlo realidad. Welcome to episode #1017 of Thinking With Mitch Joel (formerly Six Pixels of Separation). At a time when technology promises limitless capability yet leaves so many people mentally depleted, the question is no longer whether digital tools are powerful, but whether we know how to live with them. Paul Leonardi is a leading expert on digital transformation, the future of work, and organizational networks, with more than two decades of research and advisory work focused on how technology reshapes collaboration, innovation, and human behavior. A professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he holds the Duca Family Endowed Chair and chairs the Department of Technology Management, Paul has advised Fortune 500 companies, startups, and nonprofits on navigating the people side of technological change. His work has shaped global conversations, translating rigorous research into practical frameworks leaders can actually use. His latest book, Digital Exhaustion - Simple Rules For Reclaiming Your Life, confronts a growing paradox of modern work and life: technologies that make everything possible are also wearing us down. Drawing on years of research and real-world observation, Paul explains why digital exhaustion isn't simply about screen time, but about constant task switching, inference-making in data-saturated environments, and the emotional toll of being perpetually reachable. He examines how capitalist incentives and addictive design amplify fatigue, why generational differences don't offer immunity, and how the collapse of clear boundaries between work, home, and identity has created a new baseline of psychological strain. Rather than advocating withdrawal or digital detoxes, Paul offers a more realistic path rooted in intentionality, clearer norms, and conscious choices about which tools deserve our attention. His work reframes exhaustion not as personal failure, but as a systemic condition that can be managed through better design, better habits, and a more humane relationship with technology. Rob speaks with Robert Stack, President and CEO of Community Options, a nonprofit that has been at the forefront of providing safe, dignified, and inclusive care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Stack shares his personal journey that led him into this field, beginning with volunteering as a young seminarian and evolving into decades of nonprofit leadership. Robert offers eye-opening insights into the challenges and injustices still facing the disability care sector—from exploitative practices by private equity firms to deeply flawed state-run institutions. He also outlines Community Options' impactful approach: prioritizing person-centered care, scaling nonprofit services responsibly, and advocating for inclusive employment that uplifts people with disabilities. His book, Silent No Longer, is a call to action for society to demand dignity and rights for all individuals, regardless of ability. Key Topics Include: The negative impact of private equity investment in disability care services How state-run institutions often prioritize employment over quality care The injustice of sub-minimum wages and legal aversion therapies still used in some states The importance of inclusive employment and its social benefits for individuals with disabilities Community Options' approach to personalized care and their growth across 12 states Why mentorship and dignity-driven programming lead to better outcomes What Robert Stack hopes readers take away from his book Silent No Longer Mentioned in This Episode: Community Options RobertStack.org Silent No Longer (Book) This Episode is Sponsored By: DonorBox Links to Resources: Interested in Leadership and Life Coaching? From Coca-Cola to McDonalds ~ Artist. Entrepreneur. Author. Servant Leader CEO of "The Why Not Win Institute" :These are just a few words that describe Larry D. Thornton, Sr. You could also call him a game changer, teacher and team player.  Even though there are many words to describe Larry's prowess leadership, hearing his life story puts everything in perspective.Growing Up in the Segregated South to go to Game Changer was not without adversity BOTH socially & because of race perceptions, However, his Mom & Many Mentors taught him interpersonal relationship skills that helped him see a bigger picture  on solving obstacles so he & his team could become winners in Business & Life.Thornton's artistry and work ethic got him attention at Coca-Cola, both for the good and the bad. He had to figure out a way to navigate this new world, where higher-ups praised him but co-workers reminded him of his “blackness” by drawing a noose in his workstation.  He persevered by learning to appreciate and embrace diversity, people resources, and conflicting opinions. While his success grew at Coca-Cola, Thornton did the unthinkable: set out to be the first African American to own a McDonald's franchise in Birmingham. This thorny journey was peppered with threats, attempts to thwart his mission and a marriage he could not keep from falling apart. He absorbed the “try, try and try again” motto, and came to see that failure was a prelude to feasting upon the sweet fruit of success. Thornton made up his mind that he would spend each day on a mission to show his unbending gratitude for his life and its benefits by fostering a supreme attitude and maintaining consistency in vision, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to principles. Thornton's journey from Madison Park, Montgomery, has been a long one. “Why Not Win?” reflects on his most useful lessons and the anecdotes associated with them He teaches Success Principles of Leadership at his "The Why Not Win Institute" launched  with Dr. Zillah Fluker in November of 2018 and in the last several years has been delivered at more than 20 colleges, universities & corporations. Слухайте Street Culture Podcast на Apple podcasts, Spotify, SoundCloud і MEGOGO Audio.

In this episode, Patricia, calling from Canada, walks us through a series of experiences that began in early childhood and continued across decades. She recalls recurring night terrors marked by paralysis and the presence of a dark, featureless figure standing in her bedroom doorway. Around the same period, she witnesses a UFO. A large metallic object moves silently just above the treeline before disappearing without a trace. Interwoven with these experiences are vivid dreams, episodes of déjà vu, and the gradual emergence of intuitive abilities that Patricia struggles to understand and control. Set against the backdrop of workplace trauma, serious illness, and major personal change, she begins to question whether these moments are isolated incidents or part of a larger pattern.More information on this episode on the podcast website:https://ufochroniclespodcast.com/2026Hidden Cults (Promo)It is a documentary-style podcast that digs deep into the world's most extreme, elusive, and explosive fringe groups. Amicus With Dahlia Lithwick | Law, justice, and the courts

In a special new year retrospective, Amicus host Dahlia Lithwick revisits an important episode from early 2025. Back at the beginning of February, Kim Lane Scheppele, the Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor of Sociology and International affairs at Princeton University, pointed to  the speed and viciousness of the very opening legal gambits in Trump 2.0 as evidence that America had already switched over to the fast track for autocracy on January 20th, 2025. An expert in the law of autocracy, Scheppele has seen firsthand what happened to constitutional courts, the media, the academy and the democratic norms that protected them in Russia and Hungary. In this interview, Scheppelle explains how Trump's executive orders on everything from government funding to transgender people in the military reveal a familiar global playbook that has chillingly familiar endpoints.  Want more Amicus? Reposted from Wax Episodic, which you can find at: https://podcastica.com/podcast/wax-episodic — Only on Fallout could a bunch of children working in a sweat shop managed by a ghoul be this delightful. :P Aside from that, it feels like things are about to pop off, with Maximus starting a war, and Cooper riling things up with the Legion. Join Kasi, Kara, and Jason as we talk it through.  Next up on Fallout: S2E4 “The Demon in the Snow”. Let us know your thoughts! You can email or send a voice message to telegrams@podcastica.com. Other Wax Episodic shows: We cover these other intelligent, engaging, oftentimes delightfully twisted shows: Pluribus (Apple TV): Everyone is transformed into a pleasant hive mind — except for Carol (Rhea Seehorn), the most miserable woman on the planet, who must save the world from happiness. It's sounds weird, and it is… in the best way. Created by the great Vince Gilligan, of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Hosted by Jason and Karen! IT: Welcome to Derry (HBO): A fun, scary, and surprisingly great prequel to the 2016 and 2019 IT movies, Pennywise stalks the children of 1962 Derry. A mix of heart, mystery, charm, and some shockingly disturbing Nightmare on Elme Street-esque horror. Cohosted by Shawn of Strange Indeed. Alien: Earth (FX): From the brilliant Noah Hawley (Fargo, Legion), this one really scratches that sci-fi itch. A greedy corporate tech overlord transfers the consciousness of a group of terminally ill children into highly performant synth bodies. And the Xenomorph is in it, too. Also, Tim Olyphant! Hosted by Jason, Kara, and Randy. Come join our Discord and chat with hosts and other listeners:  Don't know what Discord is? What's the Frequency, Kenneth? In this episode, we gather for a post-Christmas, post-New Year pastoral debrief. We talk about symbols and meaning, Christmas and holidays, signs and seasons, and how modern churches quietly cleared the path for culture to push Christ out of Christmas without much resistance. We explore the strange and largely arbitrary ways the world measures time, along with the old Adam's never-ending pyramid project. That is, his need to build meaning upward by effort, progress, and control rather than receive it as a gift. From there, we return to symbol and meaning. We ask why ancient liturgy's nostalgia or ornamentation, but the distilled shape of reality itself, why the Lord's Supper isn't a side practice, but the beating heart of the Church, of worship, and of the Christian life. And why stories' decorations for faith, but the way truth takes on flesh and finds us where we actually live. This is a conversation about time, worship, memory, and why the Church invents meaning but receives it again and again at the table. Books Discussed in This Episode Becoming You: The Proven Method for Crafting Your Authentic Life and Career by Suzy Welch. A practical and reflective guide to discovering your true values and aligning them with your career and life choices. Welch offers tools and frameworks to help listeners clarify who they are, what they want, and how to build a life that fits. Mastesr of the Word: How Media Shaped History by William J. Bernstein. Bernstein traces the sweeping history of media, from the invention of writing in ancient Mesopotamia to the rise of the mobile internet. From the spread of alphabets and vernacular Bibles to the printing press, mass media, and digital networks, the book shows how shifts in information access have fueled empires, revolutions, democracy, and dissent. At Home: A Short History of Private Life by Bill Bryson.  A fascinating room-by-room exploration of how everyday domestic life evolved. Bryson uses his own home as a jumping-off point to uncover surprising histories behind bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms, and the objects we take for granted. The World in a Wineglass: The Insider's Guide to Artisanal, Sustainable, Extraordinary Wines to Drink Now by Ray Isle. A global tour of wine told through people, place, and philosophy. Ray Isle highlights independent, sustainability-minded winemakers and shows how wine reflects culture, geography, and values — not just tasting notes. Stitching Freedom: A True Story of Injustice, Defiance, and Hope in Angola Prison by Gary Tyler. Gary Tyler — who was wrongfully incarcerated for nearly 42 years — tells a powerful story of survival, justice, and creative resistance. While imprisoned, Tyler turned to quilting as a means of expression, healing, and political testimony, transforming fabric into visual records of racism, resilience, and hope. The book explores how art can become a lifeline under extreme conditions and how storytelling, even when stitched rather than spoken, can reclaim dignity and freedom in the face of systemic injustice. Surviving Paris: A Memoir of Healing in the City of Light by Robin Allison Davis.  A deeply personal memoir about moving to Paris in search of reinvention — and instead confronting breast cancer far from home. Allison Davis reflects on illness, identity, friendship, and resilience while navigating a foreign healthcare system and rebuilding her sense of self in the City of Light. The Stolen Crown: Treachery, Deceit, and the Death of the Tudor Dynasty by Tracy Borman. Royal historian Tracy Borman challenges long-held assumptions about the English succession after Queen Elizabeth I's death. Using new archival evidence, she reveals a far more fragile and politically charged transfer of power than history has traditionally acknowledged. Al, Zach, John Luke, and Christian explore one of the Bible's most sobering warnings about sexual sin through the story of King David. The guys explain why pornography and sexual temptation rarely begin with desire alone, but with idleness, boredom, and abandoning responsibility—long before the “rooftop moment.” Al explains David's repentance in Psalm 51 as both a warning and a hope, reminding listeners that while sexual sin carries real consequences, God's covenant faithfulness still offers a path back. In this episode: 1 Samuel 13, verse 14; 1 Samuel 16, verse 7; 2 Samuel 7, verses 8–16; 2 Samuel 11, verses 1–27; Psalm 22; Psalm 23; Psalm 51; Psalm 139, verses 13–16; Matthew 12, verses 43–45; Hebrews 12, verses 28–29 Today's conversation is about Lesson 6 of The David Story: Shepherd, Father, King taught by Hillsdale Professor Justin Jackson.
