BSJ's Greg Bedard joins CLNS Media's John Zannis as they react to the Patriots 16-3 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in the Wild Card Round on Sunday Night Football. While it wasn't Drake Maye's best performance in the young QBs playoff debut he finished the game 17-29, for 268 Yards with 1 Passing TD and an Interception, but where Maye might have had the biggest impact was on the ground with his legs. As Maye finished the game as the Patriots leading rusher going for 66 Yards on 10 attempts. While the offense might not have been pretty tonight it was the defense who stepped up big tonight allowing just 3 points in the game and recording 6 sacks on Chargers Quarterback Justin Herbert. The Patriots defense allowed just 207 Total Yards of offense and is a big reason why they are moving onto the Divisional Round where they will host the winner of Monday Nights Steelers-Texans game. Britt Moore is in his 9th season as the Men's Basketball Head Coach at Elizabethtown College where he has the Blue Jays off to a 10-1 start this year.Before taking the head coaching position at Elizabethtown, Moore spent six seasons as the head coach at the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford, taking his Panther teams to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Tournament each season.Previously, Moore was an assistant coach at Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania, for five seasons, including the final two as associate head coach to Rick Ferry. On January 7, 2025, the Palisades and Eaton Fires erupted, eventually burning down more than 16,000 structures and killing at least 31 people, becoming among the most destructive and deadly wildfires in California's history.  Two Wirecutter writers, Gregory Han and Mike Cohen, lived through the Eaton fire. Both lived in Altadena, just outside Los Angeles. Gregory's home was damaged, while Mike's burned to the ground. They collaborated on an article sharing their biggest lessons of recovery, which Wirecutter published last July, as part of our emergency preparation coverage.  Now, in a special podcast series, they are sharing the biggest lessons they've learned from the past year–—and what they can teach you about how to prepare for a disaster.  Unfortunately, climate change is making extreme weather events more frequent, more intense, and more unpredictable. In the last year alone, we've seen cataclysmic floods in the Texas Hill Country, deadly tornadoes in many parts of the U.S., and increasing flash floods across the country, just to name a few. No one is completely insulated from these types of events.  In this first episode, we'll introduce you to Gregory and Mike, and why they think it's imperative to invest in your community before a disaster.  You can listen to parts two and three of this series here. Part three will be published on Jan. 12. Actionable steps you can take from this episode:Invest in your community before a disaster. Information can be hard to come by during and in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. This is when knowing your neighbors can be invaluable. Both Gregory and Mike relied on neighbors and others in their community for information before, during, and after the fires. They've continued to share resources with this community as they've worked toward recovery over the past year.Create an easy way to communicate with your neighbors. This could be a text chain or a group chat–through something like WhatsApp or GroupMe. Maybe you're already involved with a group that may eventually help in an emergency. Mike's neighborhood thread started as a group of local dog owners before the fire.Join a volunteer organization in your community. We break down the rumored origins of the Pig Lady, tragic tales of disfigurement and isolation that lead a vengeful spirit to wait for curious teens to test their luck. But the most likely origin of this legend is very real and very disturbing: the Hall–Mills murders of 1922, a sensational double homicide involving secret affairs, powerful families, missing evidence, and a witness cruelly nicknamed “the Pig Woman.” We explore how true crime, media frenzy, class dynamics and misogyny blurred together to thwart justice and transform a real woman into folklore. Consider my 3x/week newsletter "Stoic Brekkie": https://stoicbrekkie.com In this episode, I revisit Seneca, a Stoic who often gets dismissed because of his wealth and his close relationship with Nero. I argue that these compromises do not disqualify him as a Stoic, and that he may, in fact, have been one of the most Stoic Roman thinkers precisely because he was aware of his flaws and struggled against them. I introduce and reflect on Seneca's letter On Crowds, focusing on his warning that being around the wrong people can quietly undo our moral progress. Seneca admits that he often returns home worse than when he left, more indulgent, more ambitious, and more cruel, simply because he has been among others. I connect this to modern experiences of habit, addiction, and relapse, especially how difficult it is to maintain self-control when surrounded by people who excuse or celebrate the very behaviors we are trying to leave behind. I discuss how habits are formed through repetition, how crowds can weaken our resolve by offering permission and comfort, and why leaving unhealthy environments often comes at the cost of strained relationships. I also emphasize that anyone who has successfully changed a destructive habit deserves real admiration, because reversing habituated behavior requires extraordinary effort. Finally, I qualify Seneca's position. While crowds driven by vice and groupthink are dangerous, not all crowds are. What we should avoid are antisocial and unjust groups, not communities of people sincerely trying to improve. Iran’s parliament speaker has threatened to attack Israel and US military and shipping targets, were the US to launch a strike on the country that is increasingly isolated from the world by the theocratic regime. As nationwide protests reached the two-week mark today, we discuss how Iran’s Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi is trying to position himself as a player in his country’s future and the nexus between the anti-regime protests and Israel. The US military said on Saturday that it had carried out multiple strikes in Syria targeting the Islamic State terror group as part of an operation that Washington launched in December after an attack on American personnel on December 13. At the same time, after talks in Paris last week, Israel and Syria agreed to create a mechanism that will facilitate de-escalation, diplomacy and commercial opportunities between the two countries, according to a joint statement from the two countries and the US that was released by Washington. We unwind what is happening on the ground. Under a military aid package negotiated in 2016, Israel receives some $3.8 billion annually from the US, mostly in the form of subsidies to buy American-made arms. The aid package, which took effect in 2018, is set to expire in 2028. Recently, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is making statements that add up to a growing interest for Israel to wean itself from this aid. Berman weighs in.
