It's 1993, and police are investigating a heinous double homicide on a lake that straddles the Georgia'Alabama state line. But the actions taken... and especially those not taken... come back to haunt law enforcement and the families that are now caught up in "The Bloody Wake of Mark Barton."
Every cop in Georgia is now searching for Mark Barton. Meanwhile, at his home south of Atlanta, investigators have made another gruesome discovery. But while most are shocked, some are not as the body count continues to rise, churning up "The Bloody Wake of Mark Barton."
It was the worst mass shooting in Georgia history. With Eric Rudolph in custody and facing life in prison for the Centennial Olympic Park bombing, as well as the bombings of two abortion clinics and a lesbian bar, it would seem that justice had been served. But had it? Even though he would get his dream job, Richard Jewell would spend the rest of his life facing the stigma of being originally suspected as the Olympic bomber. The court rulings in his favor and even parodies on Saturday Night Live never completely erased the moniker of “bombing suspect” that he had acquired.
In the months that follow the deadly bombing at the1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, more bombing attacks occur in the Atlanta area, but investigators are no closer to finding the culprit. Then in January 1998, another deadly bombing, this time in Birmingham, Alabama, yields evidence that reveals the identity of the suspect…and the race in on to capture Eric Robert Rudolph. The problem is, Rudolph is hiding in the rugged mountain terrain of North Carolina …an area he knows much better than those searching for him. And that’s where the man who is now one of the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted” plans his next bombing attack…aimed directly at his enemies.
It was becoming clear that security guard Richard Jewell was not the Olympic park bomber. But the man cast, first, as the “hero” and then as the “villain” was still the victim of false accusations, rumors and innuendo which would eventually take their toll on his life. Meanwhile, investigators were still no closer to solving the bombing case or preventing the real bomber from striking three more times and killing two more people as Atlanta and, now, Birmingham, Alabama found themselves gripped in fear.
As the sun rose on the Olympic flame over Atlanta on Saturday, July 27, 1996… the search for those responsible for the Olympic bombing was the top priority of every law enforcement agency in the country. At the same time, one man, the former cop turned security guard who had helped evacuate so many people at the site of the bombing, was being hailed as a hero. Richard Jewell WAS the “Man of The Hour." But in newsrooms around the world…a tremor from down deep below the surface of the story began to rumble. A new piece of information would change the focus of the investigation, the story…and the course of a man’s life. Soon, Jewell – the “hero” – was in the fight of his life, sparked by an influential informant with a personal ax to grind.
It shook Atlanta to the core and reverberated around the world at the speed of light. The bombing at Centennial Park at the height of the 1996 Olympic Games would set in motion the story of the decade; an unprecedented investigation and a manhunt that would span years. Now, hear that story the way you've never heard it before. "Terminus: The Stories of Atlanta" brings you, "You Have 30 Minutes" the untold story of the 1996 Olympic bombing.
