The International Olympic Committee (IOC) banned South Africa from competing in the upcoming Tokyo Games on 18th August, 1964, after the nation had signalled its intention to send only white athletes to the competition. South Africa attempted to make concessions - such as proposing to hold team trials abroad or including a token number of black athletes - but these were rejected as insufficient, especially with newly independent African nations and the Soviet Union pushing for a boycott, reflecting the growing international condemnation of apartheid. Marc and Kim's “In Other News” fires through a stack of quirky headlines. They start with the shocking cost of sorority life—where dues at schools like Alabama can run as high as $15,000 a year—sparking laughs and disbelief over paying steakhouse prices just to join. A lighter moment follows with Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr.'s unfortunate font typo going viral, which Marc relates to his own last name woes. The crew cracks up over China's first-ever “World Humanoid Robot Games,” where robots clumsily play sports and collapse mid-match like a bad alumni game. Shifting gears, Marc blasts the Big Ten's floated idea of a 24-team playoff as a greedy money grab that just doesn't work in football. They wrap by dissecting a new study showing young people skipping traditional milestones like marriage, kids, and homeownership—blaming cultural shifts, feminism, and economic pressures, while Marc reminds listeners that, despite trends, family life is still worth defending.
Rob Stull was elected president of the International Modern Pentathlon Union in November 2024, a four-year tenure that includes the 2028 Olympic Summer Games in Los Angeles. Stull was an alternate to the 1984 U.S. Olympic modern pentathlon team, competed in both fencing and modern pentathlon at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, then competed in modern pentathlon at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Starting at the LA28 Games, modern pentathlon will replace equestrian riding with obstacle racing after a long process that took several years. Modern pentathlon is a five-sport event that, for 2028, will include fencing, freestyle swimming, obstacle course racing, laser pistol shooting and cross-country running. We discussed the lead-up to LA28, Stull’s work at the international federation since being elected president and much more. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Joe Kleine played basketball at a level very few people will ever play. The 7 foot tall center from Slater Missouri was a winner at every level, from high school, to college, the Olympics, and the NBA. As sportswriter Jon Goode once wrote, Kleine was never a star, but what made Kleine great was that he accepted his role and was ready to play every night. Sometimes a large part of being a legend, is making everyone else around you better. That's exactly what made Joe Kleine the kind of teammate every player wants to have. Kleine's first season at Arkansas, he helped the Razorbacks to a 26-4 record, finish second in the Southwest Conference (SWC), and make the second round the NCAA Tournament. His junior season, Kleine helped Arkansas to a record of 25-7, another second place finish in the SWC, and a first round loss in the NCAA Tournament. The biggest victory of the season came on February 12, 1984 at the Convention Center in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, when Kleine helped the Razorbacks upset the #1 ranked North Carolina Tarheels, led by Michael Jordan, thanks to a basket by teammate Charles Balentine at the end of the game. It is considered one of the greatest victory's in Razorback basketball history. Kleine finished that game with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Kleine was selected by the Sacramento Kings with the sixth pick in the 1985 NBA Draft. Kleine went on to have a fifteen-year NBA career, playing with the Kings as well as the Boston Celtics, Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers, New Jersey Nets, Chicago Bulls, and Portland Trail Blazers. Kleine played on teams with legendary NBA players Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Scottie Pippen, and Dennis Rodman. He won an NBA championship in 1998, as a center, for a Chicago Bulls team that included Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and Steve Kerr.

And Can-Am, part of the motorsports group BRP that recently introduced electric snowmobiles, has just launched its first electric all-terrain vehicle. The kickoff of college football, blessedly, is just around the corner, something I've been waiting for since January and the end of the last college football season. College football is jam-packed with rivalries, and one of the most heated among them is the rivalry between the University of Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers. Both teams are located, of course, in Alabama, where I lived—Birmingham specifically—for nearly 11 years, so this is a rivalry I know well. Their annual matchup every November is called the Iron Bowl, and today on the show I have decorated sportswriter Jay Busbee here to talk about it and his new book, Iron in the Blood: How the Alabama vs. Auburn Rivalry Shaped the Soul of the South, which is out August 26. Today on the show Jay and I discuss how vicious the hatred actually is between these two teams, why the Iron Bowl is called as such, what rivalries mean to college football, the infamous Kick Six play and whether Jay thinks that is the best Iron Bowl moment of all time, what his favorite tradition is from each school—both schools are filled with traditions—and so much more. By the way, this book is a great companion piece to Netflix's new docuseries SEC Football: Any Given Saturday, which my husband and I just binged. Jay is a senior writer for Yahoo Sports and has covered the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the Masters, the World Series, the Daytona 500, the Kentucky Derby, and, you guessed it, the Iron Bowl. He hosts the travel and history show Home Turn for NASCAR Studios and has a Substack about Southern culture, “Flashlight & A Biscuit.” In addition to Iron in the Blood, Jay has written the book Earnhardt Nation, a biography of NASCAR's Earnhardt family, and, according to his biography, he “worships at the church of SEC football.” He has written everywhere from ESPN.com to Esquire, USA Today, The Washington Post, and more.Iron in the Blood: How the Alabama vs. Auburn Rivalry Shaped the Soul of the South by Jay Busbee

Today's guest is someone we've admired for years, ABC 20/20 correspondent Chris Connelly. Chris has been telling powerful, human-centered stories for decades, from his days profiling the world's biggest stars at Rolling Stone and MTV to his in-depth sports reporting at ESPN to his current work at ABC, where he covers major news events and compelling true crime cases. He's covered everything from the Olympics to high-profile criminal cases, always with that trademark mix of insight, respect, and depth. And now, he's the host of Cold Blooded: Mystery in Alaska, a gripping new podcast about the killing of Dr. Eric Garcia in Ketchikan, Alaska. We had such a great time talking with Chris about the case, his career, his approach to storytelling, and why empathy matters when telling stories like this one. Follow Chris @chriscconnelly on Instagram. Listen to Cold Blooded: Mystery in Alaska, out now wherever you get your podcasts. You can catch it weekly on Tuesdays in its own dedicated feed Weekly on Wednesdays in the 20/20 podcast feed.
