This cheeky lil’ “dad’s patch” in the podcasting world, provides a place to talk dad stuff, school gardens and general life as a parent in an ever changing world!
Dads Patch Season 2 Episode 2 - That's for girls Dad! Earlier this week I was at the toy store with Taylor and I'd promised to buy him a toy for being super awesome. Whilst looking endlessly around the store and suffering rejection after rejection to the ideas I presented, I was taken aback by his answer with being presented a My Little Pony toy. Now he had only been watching the My Little Pony show that same morning but he told me "That's for girls Dad". When I asked him why, he just told me that everyone knows My Little Pony is for girls. Neither Anj or I had ever really suggested something was for boys or girls specifically but then it dawned on me that society had been sending Taylor this message ever since he was born. In this episode I talk about how we might try as hard as we can to bring up our kids to be open minded but society has its own preconceived ideas for our kids. Dads Patch Season 2 Episode 1 - Bedtime Stories To kick off Season 2 of the Dads Patch Podcast, I thought we could chat about Bedtime Stories. Ever since we can remember, Bedtime Stories has been a part of Taylors daily routine in the evening; shower, brush teeth, a book read by mum and then a made up Hootie story by dad. In this episode I talk about how this routine helps not with just bedtime but Taylors overall development. Oh and bedtime stories aren't just for kids, I'll mention why picking up a book at the end of the day is good for my sleep too. For Dads Patch Season 2, I'm collaborating with ABC Reading Eggs. ABC Reading Eggs is the multi-award winning online reading program for ages 2–13. This is a special episode, as it's totally dedicated to our charity - OKE! It's been quite a journey over the last few years and I want to share with you the ups and downs of being the Founder of a charity. You can check out the work we're doing over on the OKE website - www.oke.org.nz
Episode 4 - Fathers Day Out of all the celebrations throughout the year, Fathers Day is one of the most special celebrations to me. In this episode of the Dad's Patch podcast, I chat about the significance of FD to me and also talk about the need for more dads to #DadUp (especially those who have the wealth and political power to bring about change).
Episode 3 - Having an influence. When I was a kid it seemed that people of influence were those within my daily life i.e. parents, teachers, local gang leaders (kind of). Whereas today it seems like the entire world wants to have an influence on our kids. This episode of the Dad's Patch has me questioning to amount of influence we should let strangers have on the way we parent, what our kids do, our lives in general. Oh and the little man becomes a movie reviewer.
Episode 2 - Being Present It was a busy weekend of birthday parties and Taylor stuff. This episode captures some of things I witnessed at the birthday parties and acted as a reminder that we need to be present for the moments we spend with our kids. I also chat about life as a football fan. And we managed to do a quick Q&A with the real star of this podcast...Taylor.
Episode 1 - The Dad's Patch Life! It's been quite the journey leading up to life as it is today and I thought I'd share a little bit about where it all started. From growing up in Birmingham, England to now living on the other-side of the world in New Zealand. And I'll share a few stories which have helped shape me into the dad I am today. Oh and of course we'll hear from little man Taylor!
The Dad's Patch podcast is a little ramble around Paul Dickson's little patch of the world, talking about life as a dad, hubby, charity founder, expat and a life long football fan.
